Recently, she told the Today Show that she would be headed to Broadway in the fall, but did not name the show. But now, The New York Times is reporting it’s a musical based on Harlem’s Cotton Club.
Following popular runs at New York City Center under the title “Cotton Club Parade,” the show – a musical revue about the famed Harlem nightclub – will begin performances on Broadway in October with a new name, “After Midnight,” the producers said on Monday. No casting was announced, but the producers are in talks with Fantasia Barrino, the Grammy Award winner and American Idol champion, to join the show, according to a person familiar with the negotiations who spoke on condition of anonymity to reveal the confidential discussions.
Fantasia made her Broadway debut in 2006 in The Color Purple. “After Midnight” will be produced by Scott Sanders, one of lead producers on The Color Purple. Jazz musician, Wynton Marsalis, will be handling the music and has chosen the 17 musicians for the big band that performs the show’s swing and blues tunes. Numbers include songs by Duke Ellington and Harold Arlen.
Hope this works out for Fantasia. She was fantastic in The Color Purple.
