Comedian Barry Brewer Jr. does not allow a torn achilles stop his audition

Comedian and musician Barry Brewer Jr. tore his achilles while playing basketball. Unfortunately, the mishap occurred before his America’s Got Talent audition. However, the show must go on and the comedian arrived on stage with the help of crutches.

“I didn’t want to miss this opportunity to perform for you guys,” Barry explained in a new early release clip of the upcoming Auditions 5 episode from NBC. “I was going to do stand-up comedy, but I’m going to do sit down today.”

Barry explains that he’s a musician who grew up playing in church on the Southside of Chicago. A parishioner thought he was funny and suggested he do some jokes for the church concert. He took that advice, and his first performance garnered a standing ovation. He’s been pursuing musical comedy ever since.

Before host Terry Crews helped Barry sit down behind an electric piano, judge Howie Mandel quipped “Break a leg!”

Gary is no stranger to television audiences

As the comic delivers his routine, he accompanies himself on piano. The noodling is incidental until he amusingly describes the difference between playing in white church and Black church. The first is soothing and simple, while the latter is energetic and raucous. The clip ends before the judges Howie Mandel, Heidi Klum, Sofia Vergara and Simon Cowell deliver their verdicts. But it seems clear that the panel will send him through.

Gary has appeared on TV before, including a recurring role on BET’s Games People Play. His comedy special Chicago I’m Home can be streamed on Amazon’s Freevee channel.

America’s Got Talent airs Tuesday June 27 on NBC at 8 pm ET/PT.
