Chris Sligh, Phil Stacey and Mandisa Record Haiti Charity Single

Popular Christian artist, Michael W. Smith got a group of gospel and country artists together in Nashville last Wednesday (Jan 27) to record “Come Together Now” a song written by Smith and fellow Gospel veterans, David Mullen and Cindy Morgan.

The song will be released soon, with all proceeds going to fund the Haiti relief effort.

Amongst the Christian artists asked to participate were  Chris Sligh and Phil Stacey from Season 6, and Season 5’s Mandisa.

After the jump, check out a couple of videos: One shot at the recording by Russ Mohr, one of the participants and lead singer of Christian band, Fundamental Elements.

There are short interviews with Chris and Mandisa, and Phil can be spotted singing with the group.

The second, from Smith’s You Tube channel, shows the group rehearsing, and gives you a pretty good idea of what the song will sound like.

Some of the other artists involved in the effort: Stephen Curtis Chapman, Amy Grant, Matt Maher, members of dc Talk, Casting Crowns, the Newsboys, Selah, Margaret Becker, the Katinas, Point of Grace, John Schlitt and Nicole C. Mullin.

  1. Yay for 3 of my favorite Idols participating!:-D. Michael is awesome. He has written a song, I believe, after the Columbine tragedy, and President Bush asked him to record a song to commemorate 9/11. Phil sang that song, “There She Stands,” in Navy uniform, at a 25th-anniversary tribute for Michael. It impressed Michael’s manager so much that he pursued Phil for their label, Reunion Records. And Chris, with a great hit in “Here Comes Goodbye,” and Mandisa with several Grammy and Dove nominations, are not bad, either.:-D. Phil had tweeted that he was standing next to an Oak Ridge Boy, and he found out later from fellow label mate, Mark Hall, that Mark was standing next to John Schlitt of the Christian rock group Petra, one of the pioneers of Christian music. Some great names there. I don’t recognize everyone as far as the names, but it was awesome to have these people come together. They donated their time, as did the recording studio, which is located at Melinda Doolittle’s alma mater, Belmont University. They also had about 250 or so kids involved. Michael has all the info, including pics, at his official site.

  2. All great people involved in this one! Will have to show my support.

  3. Great effort to help Haiti! Wow – Mandisa looks great – I think she has lost more weight since I saw her. Did you see the Grammys Sunday night? Rascal Flatts “Here Comes Goodbye” written by Chris Sligh – was nominated for a Grammy. It was up there with some great songs. Love the Lady Antebellum song myself but impressed with Sligh’s chart topper. Haven’t heard much from Phil on my Christian station but I hear Chris and Mandisa all the time. Wonder why Melinda was not recording with them? GREAT song – I am going to download. Thank you for posting MJ.

  4. I noticed Mandisa and Chris S. on front row, they both have lost weight. Was that Wynonna Judd on the front row, too? Saw the Oak Ridge Boy with the long hair and long white beard, cannot think of his name. Sounds good, can’t wait to hear it.

I am puzzled by that, too, as a Philnatic. Phil was on several stations with his “You’re Not Shaken.” Last info I have on the song is that it got to #17 on the Billboard chart for the week of Aug. 29th. Since then, I have not seen it on the charts. Stations like Z88.3 in Orlando and K-LOVE in Colorado played him a lot. A report mj posted yesterday from mediabase said that they will add “Some Kind of Love” to the charts on Feb. 22. Brian Mansfield was keeping track of “With All My Heart” on his chart on USA Today’s Idol Chatter. And I believe some stations do play some of the songs. WPSM in the Florida panhandle used “One” to help promote giving back in early October, and many have let him know how much of an encouragement “You’re Not Shaken” and his cd in general have been to them. “Old Glory” is always welcomed with a standing ovation. The positive results are not always readily visible on the charts, but they are there.:-). As far as Melinda, I read that she was one of the artists that was supposed to have been at the recording, but I have not seen her in pictures, nor do I have confirmation that she was there. I guess it is whomever was available at the time for the session. I also post on a fan site for her, but haven’t been there lately, to find out whether she was really there.

Phil was standing next to Chris. On his other side was another Oak Ridge Boy, per his tweet and the twitpics below that he posted. He is not always very visible in some of the videos. He was wearing glasses. Wynonna was also on the front, right next to Michael, in Phil’s pics. The other person next to Michael is Meredith Andrews, who was with Phil and Matt Maher on Michael’s most recent “A New Hallelujah” fall tour. Matt is right behind Michael, with the gray hair and glasses

  7. CFIdolsfan – you sure know a lot about who these people are and what they are doing. It was quite informative. I did know who Meredith Andrews was… she was on a School Tour with Chris Sligh when he came here. She seems sweet. Are these the way back “Oak Ridge Boys” that my grandmom would have listened to on T.V.? (she is 60).

WOW – had not noticed Wynonna. SHE has lost weight too. I saw someone had commented that she is a spokewoman for Alli? She looks great. I need to tell my mom about that.

Thank you MJ for the good job – always! Your site is about the only one I have time to get my AI news fix from.

  8. going to check this one out – kudos to these alums stepping up and doing what they do best for the haitian cause.

Thanks, :-). I am a Christian, a Phil Stacey fan, and help run a fan site for him; so knowing about him and Christian music kind of go together. Yes, Wynonna has done Alli commercials, and those are indeed the Oak Ridge Boys your grandmom knows. I have seen them on TV in shows for the Feed the Children ministry.
