Chevel Shepherd Governor Inauguration

Michelle Lujan Grisham was sworn in as Governor of New Mexico on January 1 in a public ceremony in the state capital, Santa Fe. Farmington native and newly crowned The Voice champ, Chevel Shepherd was on hand to perform God Bless America for the historic occasion.

Hundreds of New Mexicans showed up to watch the state’s new Lieutenant Governor Howie Morales and Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham, swear into office.

The ceremony included speeches and well wishes from top state officials along with Chevel’s performance. Gov. Lujan Grisham is the state’s first female Hispanic Democratic governor and for the first time in US history a woman replaced another woman in the governor’s office. Grisham said after the ceremony, “It is time for us to thrive. Viva Nuevo Mexico.”

Sixteen year old Chevel, who competed on Team Kelly Clarkson, lives in Farmington with her family where she attends high school and helps her dad rebuild vintage cars. The singer plans on making a classic country album, with help from Coach Kelly.
