Casey James told Good Day New York this morning that a recording contract is “Looking really good.” He says as soon as he knows about the signing a record will be “out pretty quick.” Good luck to Casey!

  1. That would mean that 19 is signing Casey, right? They aren’t allowed to talk about any other possibilities until 90 days after the finale, if it’s like other years, IIRC. I think 19 would be stupid not to sign him, but they frequently are stupid, so…

  2. Did that guy just ask Casey if he was “aroused” by Kara?!?! HAHAHAHAHHAHAA!!!!! Gotta love those awkward moments, man… At least the guy has experience with drunk people. If that didn’t prepare him for life, I don’t know what did!! LOL!!

And *yay* for a contract “looking really good”! I’m dying to hear what he’s going to put out there…

  3. Who is that hideous woman who was lecturing Lee about what he needs to do?

Lady, he won. I don’t think he needs any advice from you.

  4. Dang, even these male reporters get inappropriate with Casey.

I hope this really comes about. Along with Crystal, Casey was my favorite from very early on, and it’s clear we got a very small glimpse of who he is as a musician and a person.

Somebody over on TWoP posted a link to this blogger, Hans Eber, who is supposedly an insider in the music business. He has a lot of positive stuff to say about Casey:

AND THE REAL WINNER OF “AMERICAN IDOL” IS…CASEY JAMES

    CASEY JAMES AND “CAPTAIN AMERICA”

CASEY JAMES: AMERICA FINALLY HAS AN IDOL

    Here’s Eber’s bio.

  5. Correct, 3 months after the finale (we are 85 days away from that). That applies, at least, to everyone who made Hollywood week, and possibly all auditioners. 19E obviously shows interest.

  6. YAYAYAYAYAYAYAYAYAYAYAY!!!!!!!!!!!

Yeah, THAT! What’s more to say?! :-)

  7. Wow! Gotta love Casey! Great news about a possible record deal! His would be the only AI album that I want to buy other than Taylor. Question: Was Casey ever on David Letterman? You had him listed a while ago but I never saw a video of it. Also will he be on Regis?

  8. Srsly? Ok, color me shocked Casey might actually get a major label deal. IDGI. He’s pretty, and a good guitar player, and IMO should either do some kind of modelling (or maybe even acting if he’s got the chops), and/or be in a band, but as the lead guitarist or something. I’m sorry, but every week he was on, even though he was usually pretty decent, I could never remember him 30 seconds later.

  9. Now that I’ve actually watched them, I would like to point out that Casey’s interview lasted 4:48 and it took until the 2:26 mark for them to stop talking about cougar bait and start talking about his music. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: the man is a saint.

    Dear Lavender Lady,

Trust me. Lee has no problem filling a stage or being entertaining. You might want to drag your bony ass down to the M&M stage today and see for yourself before you go telling people how to be magnetic. Seein’ as how you’re not exactly a firecracker yourself.

I think Crystal’s hair is beautiful. They’re all acting like they’ve never seen dreads on a woman before. Move along! Talk about the music!

  10. I’m sorry, but every week he was on, even though he was usually pretty decent, I could never remember him 30 seconds later.

A beautiful singing voice isn’t particularly necessary to sing the blues. In fact, some grit in the voice fits the style better. Try going to an Allman Brothers concert, just as an example- hours of amazing guitar solos, with songs stretching out to 20 minutes at times, while they might only sing one verse of the song. That’s Casey’s true element, and it’s a style that’s coming back to the mainstream these days.

  11. Sweet! that’s great news for Casey and I hope it really happens. His guitar playing is most excellent.

Lee does not need a freaking lecture from an interviewer, how rude, he won the darn show.

Crystal is such a sweetheart and her hair is just fine the way it is.

It’s going to be fun watching all three of their careers.

  12. Srsly? Ok, color me shocked Casey might actually get a major label deal. IDGI. Hmm. Pretty, good guitar player, and let’s not forget he can sing, too. Sounds like more than enough criteria to snag a record deal to me!

Also, how could you forget Casey? He got third place, he was there every week! Plus, he’s gorgeous.

    edit

  13. Did Casey ever appear on Letterman after his elimination? All the others idols did. I guessed I missed him.

  14. CathyMK, you can be a fan of Blues music and not a fan of Casey.

Yes. Please, let’s not make assumptions about each other, it’s not polite.

  15. Did Casey ever appear on Letterman after his elimination? All the others idols did. I guessed I missed him.

No, he didn’t. 3rd place finisher misses out on a lot of interview opportunities, because of the finale schedule.

  16. I’m glad about Casey!! Would love to buy a cd of his along with Crystal and Lee. I will have to admit it is getter harder to support so many AI contestants after Idol! I am also starting to agree with Usher about to many talent shows.

  17. I can see Casey being successful as a country artist. I doubt that 19 would snatch him up to make a real blues record. Maybe he’ll be Danny’s label mate.

  18. Lee scores 2 points for appearing to be uncomfortable with the overblown paint shop storyline, unlike Crystal who keeps reminding us how poor she used to be.

I hope Casey outsells them both.

  19. I don’t see him as a solo artist. He was not memorable when he was on stage alone. I’m not even sure he should be the only lead singer in a band. I would put together something where a couple of guys shared the lead and Casey could alternate jamming and singing.

I can see Casey being successful as a country artist. I doubt that 19 would snatch him up to make a real blues record. Maybe he’ll be Danny’s label mate.

There’s four different Nashville labels under the Sony umbrella: Arista (Carrie), BNA (Kellie P.), RCA (Danny), and Columbia. Not sure which one they would put Casey with, but I agree: he can infuse his rock/blues style into a country-tinged album and do really well with it.

  21. I hope Casey does country music, where at least he will have some chance at success. I hope he does not do any blues music. Taylor Hicks totally failed at this genre. You cannot get a big enough audience when your music only has niche market appeal.

  22. LaraC:

Lee scores 2 points for appearing to be uncomfortable with the overblown paint shop storyline, unlike Crystal who keeps reminding us how poor she used to be.

I hope Casey outsells them both.

Every time they bring up the paint shop (and that includes the judges) I’ll bet the thing that runs through Lee’s head is, “Jeez. Those dudes are my friends. I worked with them for 8 years. Do you have to keep insulting their business?”

  23. I hope Casey does get signed. He was my favorite this season, and I thought he got a raw deal on the show–treated like a toyboy, and his vocals were often mixed really low so you could barely hear him. I don’t think he was comfortable with the competition aspect of the show, and I hope he can shine when he’s just playing music instead of competing.

  24. Hot damn!!! Get it, Casey!

I am so excited for him! (And for me as a fan.) I hope it all pans out and we get some great music from him.

wjmtv he does have the patience of a saint. It’s about, what, 50 bajillion times he’s been asked about Kara and Cougargate? FFS let it go, interviewers.

To be honest I did get a good giggle out of his response that he’s used to playing in bars (implied: with drunk people) so he’s used to it (implied: Kara acts like a drunk).

  25. Every time they bring up the paint shop (and that includes the judges) I’ll bet the thing that runs through Lee’s head is, “Jeez. Those dudes are my friends. I worked with them for 8 years. Do you have to keep insulting their business?”

Good point. Not to mention making it seem as though selling paint is the worst job anyone could have and only losers would do it, so any other clerk in that store – or any store – must be a big old loser.

  26. Now that I’ve actually watched them, I would like to point out that Casey’s interview lasted 4:48 and it took until the 2:26 mark for them to stop talking about cougar bait and start talking about his music. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: the man is a saint.

The thing that bothered me more was that of there are three bios on the site and Lee and Crystal’s mention their pre-Idol history of music while Casey’s mentions him being a heart-throb who stripped down for Kara and Victoria Beckham. Casey had to mention that he’s been performing for 11 years during the interview and the interviewers claimed they watched the show (but didn’t know about his motorcycle accident).

All three of these interviews were pretty pointless really. Such is the life of a minor celebrity, I suppose (and better than wondering where the next meal is coming from).

I hope Casey is right and a record deal is in the works. I can’t wait to buy his record! That said, he seemed to be trying to manage expectations a bit at the end of the interview which probably makes sense given the precarious state of the industry in this economy.

  27. Ugh. These interviews were terrible. Yes, Casey is nothing more than man candy, Lee worked in a paint shop, and Crystal should have won!!!11 … seriously? And all this from supposed fans of the show. I felt bad for the lot of them, having to deal with this stupidity.

  28. got to give it to all the contestants… they are asked the same questions again and again. must have lots and lots of patience to get through the media circus… and then in a flash, the white hot media light recedes. best to enjoy it while it lasts…

  29. MusicAllTheTime:
He was my favorite this season, and I thought he got a raw deal on the show–treated like a toyboy, and his vocals were often mixed really low so you could barely hear him.

I read somewhere (maybe on another forum?) that for a few of his performances he had a dry feed with no reverb. That would make the vocal mix sound off and distant. I noticed it a few times as well.

  30. On Casey, this:

If Bucky can make a living doing music, Casey should be just fine….

back-handed compliment I know, but I think barring a really, really bad album Casey is going to do just fine in the country-rock genre.

  31. Just let them sing already! Every year it is the same b.s. with these interviews, I can’t beieve that most of these interviews give a boost to the contestants or the tour. They are just annoying even for fans like me. I hope they get to sing more than one song each on the Today Show tomorrow.

  32. Yeah, why can’t they be like AP wire stories? Sit each of them down for an hour and ask all the questions, and then everybody gets the feed for their show. Because it’s not like ANYONE ever asks a NEW question. The kids could get some rest, and the show hosts wouldn’t look quite as much like complete morons. Except Reeg & Kelly.

  33. Thristy, a “dry” feed is better when doing acoustic. Reverb helps with a full band with multiple instruments at full volume. Sound engineers have a tough job, lots of trial and error. I think sometimes his vocals were too isolated, the most likely cause for that is compression. He could benefit from a good amount of signal processors, Lee too.

  34. I always thought there was something missing from Casey’s performances. Maybe it was all these technical sound issues you are discussing. He is stiff but that can be solved by having multiple people on stage to take the visual off him sometimes. He is going to have a career. I am happy for him.

  35. I am over the moon. Out of all the contestants this year, Casey is the only one that moved me. Besides the looks, he is a musician down to his toes and music is in his soul. I am relieved that he does not use glory notes nor the USA choral society backing him. What he does is interact on stage and make you enjoy the music. I love his voice and I knew he would get a contract.

  36. Just finished watching the three videos… I read all the comments here first and I was curious to see what people were talking about. It’s easy to see why the interviews of Casey and, especially, Lee were conducted that way… these two are big fans of Crystal and thought she should have won (they said so themselves!). These two interviews were very bad and it’s not the fault of Lee or Casey. The woman was particularly dumb !!!

  37. HALLELUIA for Casey!!!!!!!! No pun intended Lee..

Haha i just know Casey is going to be the most marketable..

  38. Thanks for your post, Rub.

A big part of why he’s stiff is because of his accident. He never complains about it, but still has pain from it daily. He’s got rods and pins in his leg and arm. That’s why he isn’t an easy mover, even when he walks.

    Exactly!!

I am super excited hearing Casey talk about a record deal in the works. I can’t wait to hear official word. Go get ’em, Casey!!!! :)

  40. Wow, they really loved Crystal! I don’t blame them. :D

Lee’s interview was a little weird. He hadn’t planned to try out for idol? IDGI! I wish him the best.

Yay for Casey and his possible contract!! I agree he could be really big, I just hope it doesn’t go the way of KLC (S7). I hope he gets some great songs and we get the true Casey James sound.

  41. I’m so hoping Casey goes blusie country and I want him to go on the road with Brad Paisley. Dueling guitars. Yeah baby!

MJ – what about Crystal? Will she be on Letterman? Or did I miss her? I see Lee is scheduled for Monday, 6/7, but I don’t see anything for Crystal.

  43. Yay for Casey! “Jealous Guy” is still the “MOMENT” of Season 9 for me – where his vocals and guitar shined equally! Passion and emotional connection on both ends! Congratulations to him and when it is officially announced, I know there will be some celebrations heard around the world!!

  44. Color me surprised if 19 signs him. If they do he’s definitely going country. I hope the music is as good as I think Casey’s capable of!

  45. windmills:

    Maybe Ellen’s going to. :)

  46. sounds to me like he’s going to 19! congrats to Casey! he looks so happy in that interview.. like he’s about to burst with good news :) I hope they treat him right over there! I’ll definitely be buying that album!

  47. Of all the offerings from S9 (both AI performances and studio), the only song I play consistently is Casey’s studio “Don’t.” It is poignant and beautifully phrased. Yes, a musician to the core. He’s the only one I’d go to see.

  48. “Jealous Guy” is still the “MOMENT” of Season 9 for me – where his vocals and guitar shined equally! Passion and emotional connection on both ends!

Idolbeat, I so agree, the only one I saw, and it just happened. I liked him OK before, and he had some other good performances I also liked – but once I knew he could do ‘that’ on the Idol stage – and once I saw the Fort Worth performances, I kinda sorta want to see what else is available musically, “moving forward” – and hoping for blues/rock.

I like the dry delivery when Casey does a zinger – there’ve been a few now – and I figure 11 or so years of dealing with drunks in bars is a good training ground for the Idol Judges Panel, and even the ‘less than pro press’ interviews- take nothing personally, KWIM – and don’t let it distract you. Keep on point. That kind of experience, both as the performer ‘and’ as the bartender has stood DC in good stead as well, IMO.

Thanks for the interview, MJ – I’l buy this if/when it happens – not the rest though – wish Casey the best of good fortune.

  49. Incipit:

Amen. Drunks are excellent training for Post AI press. And the barricades.

Yeah, he has a great sense of humor. Very dry. I like it dry. Like my martinis.

There were three “moments” for me this season. One of them was “Jealous Guy.” He laughed it off when Ryan asked him about it, but I think he had a flashback of some kind at one point during the performance. It gave me chills and still does.

I want to know who he’s signing with and what kind of record he’s doing NOWNOWNOWNOWNOW.

  50. Casey is the whole package. His voice, his Calofornia Curls, his looks and the fact that he sings anything and everything. My favoriate all through AI9. He is a sharp guy and quick on his feet, re: what he said in the interview that he deals all the tine with girls and stuff Kara said. I think Kara should have helped Casey along more and now go along with the other judges all the time.
Waiting to hear and buy Casey’s record.

  51. Congratulations Casey…and keep giving the BS back to those AH reporters! Love your bluesy music & that guitar playing of yours…damn good!! Your jam session with Bret was way toooo short!!! I’m Patiently waiting to buy your music

  52. I was thinking the same thing about how that woman was telling Lee how to act on stage? I mean really? Yes I know there are people out there not fans of Lee and that is ok. But a professional interviewer should not try to tell her guest on to perform on stage. Lee is doing just fine as far as this fan is concerned, and I am sure he will find his way soon. Crystal is a natural. I love how they try to give her a mini pizza when in fact she SAID she wanted the big slice, the real deal pizza. LOL Loving Casey. Loved how he turned that awkward moment of that jerk asking him did he get an arousal when Kara did that? Come on, where do they get these people? LOL

  53. I’m happy to hear things are “looking really good’ for Casey.
He had his hits and misses but was really always at least solid
( minus HCJ week ) He also had some of the very best moments of the entire season for me: Jealous Guy, Don’t, the Bret Michaels’ duet and his unstaged sing-off exit of Daughters with the little girl will always be memorable to me. What really got me excited about him though was the youtube videos of him playing during his homecoming trip. He was in his element…as he was with Bret. I believe being surrounded by other musicians, ( forming and leading a band ) will be Casey at his best. He’s proven he can sing solo but given the choice, I bet he will want to do a combination of the two. I think people have taken notice of him as a musician and established credibility. His one performance with Bret Michaels’ has garnered him a mound of publicity. I don’t believe he will have any problem forming a really good band.
My only probblem is that I want his music, I want it now and I want to see him on his on tour now !!!
Meanwhile, I am playing the AI songs and his homecoming music on A LOT.

Bootstar, thanks so much for the link to Hans’s article. It was a great articile because he knows what is in store for Casey and seems to feel what Casey is all about. How Casey didn’t win I will never understand. Maybe they don’t like a guy like Carrie Underwood.LOL

  55. Color me surprised if 19 signs him. If they do he’s definitely going country.

Same here. I’m not getting my hopes up here honestly seeing the history with the majority of 3rd place finishers getting passed over but I wish him the best and hope it happens.

  56. Color me surprised if 19 signs him. If they do he’s definitely going country.

Same here. I’m not getting my hopes up here honestly seeing the history with the majority of 3rd place finishers getting passed over but I wish him the best and hope it happens.

Well, there have been exceptions for seventh (JHud), sixth (Kellie P.) and fourth (Daughtry) place finishers. Perhaps it’s time for someone to buck the third place trend….

  57. If his deal is coming soon, then 19 signed him. Because they’re not allowed to make non 19 deals until August. He’s a terrific guitar player but probably needs a band to really make it.

  58. I think it is in these Idols best interest to say they have a deal in the works, whether they do or not, just because it helps keep interest up. If he said he definitely didn’t have anyone interested in signing him, people would forget about him altogether. This way, people watching the interview, if they are interested in him at all, will at least make a mental note to keep an eye out for him. *shrug* I’m not saying he’s lying, but he could certainly be putting a positive spin on things. I hope he does get signed, I think he’s got a lot of talent, and I kind of fell in love with him at his homecoming, seeing him in his element there. Even if 19 doesn’t sign him, I can still see him putting music out a la Michael Johns, Brooke White, even Jason Castro. It just means we’ll have to wait longer for the music.

  59. OvenMitt:

Danny did! I’m going to take that as a good sign for Casey.

  60. I believe Casey will not only be the one to break the trend..but he will become the breakout artist of the season.
However, last year’s third place guy seems to be doing pretty well and Elliott has had a fair amount of success and Melinda Dolittle is doing ok.

I wish Lee would just blurt out that he’s also been a singer and musician playing gigs after his day job since age 17 and he has two cds out already but I know he must be under some contractual gag order with tptb not to talk about that. So sick of the he was just a paintsalesman and look at him now story line and I’m a Lee fan. What a witch that lady was for treating Lee the way she did. Both those interviewers were so unprofessional.

  62. I dont think he is lying or making it up. That blog by hans ebert said there was also interest from warner brothers which they would have to go through 19. It sounds to me he just has to wait for the official lee and crystal announcements. He is so talented he will be a breakout star of this season if this goes through

  63. Well, there have been exceptions for seventh (JHud), sixth (Kellie P.) and fourth (Daughtry) place finishers. Perhaps it’s time for someone to buck the third place trend….

Danny did last season. He’s with 19/RCA and doing quite well. I think Danny broke the trend and this is good news for Casey. :)

I also agree he will be the breakout star from this season.

  64. Okay, I forgot about Danny! Yes, he is doing just fine without the Idol title, isn’t he?

I echo the sentiment that Casey will break out from this bunch. I think that idea might irritate or intimidate some folks, but we shall see how it all pans out!

  65. My worry is where is the buzz other than this Hans, the recording industry is struggling and looking at what is expected from the top 2, it’s a bit underwhelming. Also troubling is the fact that Casey is not really having any presence on I-tunes top 1000, 3 songs in the lower portion, please correct me if I am wrong?

I find it hard to believe that he will bring that much to a major label, but I wish him luck.

I’m optimistic despite his iTunes numbers (or the lack thereof) because AI could not possibly be further away from “what he does,” yet he made it to #3. Once people get an earful of the Real Casey, they’re going to want more.

  67. I’m optimistic despite his iTunes numbers (or the lack thereof) because AI could not possibly be further away from “what he does,” yet he made it to #3. Once people get an earful of the Real Casey, they’re going to want more.

Exactly. Casey didn’t conform to the Idol status quo, yet he also wasn’t able to show the breadth of his talent on the show. He has his guitar virtuosity, his musical integrity (and influences that span several genres), his distinct voice, his marketability AND his loyal Idol fanbase to bring to a major label. How any A&R exec could argue that these qualities are NOT valueable components towards success, is beyond me.

  68. Casey is going to be a very good concert entertainer. You can see his joy in music and he is an amazing musician. Just think of what Kellie Pickler has accomplished merely opening for other acts and a song here or there doing well.

  69. I also agree he will be the breakout star from this season.

I too have a sneaky suspicion this may come to pass, particularly if he is marketed crossover pop/rock/country/blues. :-) AI has not yet had an authentic male country artist. (And, no, I don’t count Danny, because of that pesky authenticity adjective I used. See what I did there? ;-)) Not saying that’s all Casey is, but he certainly has that as a strong component.

And, no one can credibly deny that the Bret/Casey duet was really fantastic, and not only because of Bret….

  70. I enjoy Casey and hope he makes it! He’s uber talented. I can’t make any predictions, because that would be like shooting him dead in the water. LOL. Good luck to you dude. :-)

  71. I LOVE Casey James’s blend of southern rock, country and Texas blues. He has an unique soulful voice, mad guitar skills, outgoing personality with a sense of humor, looks and is a nice guy – can’t beat that! Casey James is my American Idol 2010!

Well his post-Idol sales would be the biggest argument against signing him. There is no evidence that he can deliver financially given that he doesn’t even have enough fans to compete with Crystal’s underwhelming sales numbers.

I’m not seeing the evidence for him being a ‘break-out star’ – Lee has way outsold everyone and even his sales are mediocre by Idol standards. What evidence are you guys seeing that I am missing?

  73. He did mention that after he got off work he would go to the city and play gigs but yeah he hasn’t talked much about his 2 pre-Idol albums.

  74. I’m not seeing the evidence for him being a ‘break-out star’ – Lee has way outsold everyone and even his sales are mediocre by Idol standards. What evidence are you guys seeing that I am missing?

I am not making predictions, because the best singers/musicians aren’t always the best sellers. So yeah. I love the fact that Casey is so talented, but I’m not going to make him the star of season 8. I thought Allison would outsell Kris and Adam, so shoot me.

Lee will do well initially, but I don’t think he’s going to do well in the long term unless they give him some artistic freedom.
