Carrie Underwood is on a comeback tour of sorts. After having a baby son, Isaiah, in February, the American Idol season 4 winner took some time off.
She returned, triumphantly, to the CMT Music Awards last week, where she picked up 3 trophies and closed the broadcast with a performance of her latest single, “Little Toy Guns.”
Carrie’s next performance was on Saturday, at the CMA Festival, headlining the big LP Field concert. in a show that included Little Big Town and Brett Eldredge.
In a press conference before hand, Carrie talked about her first big Nashville stage performance after winning Idol. “It was a chaotic, with cameras flashing and a gazillion fans,” she said.
“I was singing with Phil Vassar, a song I did not know,” Carrie remembered. “I was like, ‘Oh Lord, don’t let me screw up the words.’ We somehow pulled it off OK.”
Fast forward 10 years later, and Carrie is a new mom, working on her 6th album. Her record, a Greatest Hit set, included her latest songs, “Something in The Water,” and “Little Toy Guns.”
Having to come up with an album’s worth of new material can be tough with a busy schedule of touring. But Carrie said slowing down during her pregnancy gave her time focus on her music.
“I spent a lot of time writing and listening to new songs,” she said. “I feel like now we’re on the right track and in a really good place.”
Carrie’s seven song set at CMA Fest opened with her hit, “Blown Away,” and included “Two Black Cadillacs,” “Undo It,” “Little Toy Guns, “Something in the Water,” “Last Name,” and finished with her massive first smash, “Before He Cheats.”
As far as what comes next, Carrie said, “I don’t know what to expect for the next 10 years. As long as I enjoy what I’m doing, I call that winning. I will go where the road takes me.”
