Carrie Underwood has had a busy weekend. On Friday night (June 7), she headlined a show at CMA Fest in Nashville. Then, the American Idol season 4 winner dropped her official “Southbound” music video the following day.
Carrie had a big surprise for the audience during her Friday night concert at Nissan Stadium. Joan Jett joined the country singer on stage for a trio of the legendary rocker’s biggest hits, including “I Hate Myself for Loving You,” “Bad Reputation” and “I Love Rock ‘n’ Roll.”
Backstage, Carrie gushed about the collaboration to members of the media.”I’m super excited,” she said, noting that she’s been a fan of Joan for a long time. She invited the singer to join her set, having no idea if she’d say yes. “The stars just aligned. It was like, ‘What if Joan Jett came to CMA Fest? Let’s ask her!'” Carrie told reporters “So she’s here. The coolness has arrived, and I’m hoping some of it rubs off on me.”
“The more I got to know her and see just how much of a trailblazer she was, for not just women in her genre of music, but of women in music in general. I mean, I’m a fan on every level: personally, professionally, musically,” Carrie said. “I’m honored she’s heard my name before, and that she agreed to come sing with me.”
Of course, there is a connection between the two artists. Joan’s “I Hate Myself for Loving You” served as the basis of “Waiting All Day for Sunday Night,” The Sunday Night Football theme during 2006-2016 seasons. Carrie sang the song from 2013-2016, succeeding Faith Hill, who performed the football opening from 2007 through 2012. I guess Joan has no hard feeling that Carrie switched the song out for a couple of her own originals. Heh.
