Why didn’t this happen before? Carly Smithson’s powerful pipes are perfect to cover one of U2’s big sweeping anthems, as she does here for Billboard magazine’s Mashup Mondays.

“Growing up for me, U2 is massive where I’m from, ” says the Dublin-born Carly. “I’m very proud to be Irish and it’s a cool thing to [cover U2]… This is the first time I ever sang U2 song in public.”
UPDATE: Carly has never sung a U2 song in public as a solo lead vocalist. She sang “One” with Michael Johns on the Ellen show. Not a big deal either way…
