Candice Glover – I Am Beautiful – Winners Single – First Listen!

And the winner of American Idol Season 12 is…Candice Glover! Her new single, “I Am Beautiful” is available on iTunes now. The song is a co-write with with Jaden Michaels and Joleen Belle. and produced by John Locke (the drummer in the Glee jazz band!)  and Roahn Hylton.

As some of you have mentioned in comments, the contemporary production and Candice’s stellar vocals sell the song.  The song is growing on me, as long as I ignore the lyrics.  If the rest of the album is of this caliber, Candice has a shot at selling well. I hope Interscope promotes her properly.

Candice’s debut album, “Music Speaks” is set to be released July 16.

  1. Not bad. I am still worried the release is going to happen so soon. Also yay for kree deffo getting an album to. But wi there be any other label to market the albums??

  2. Gorgeous cover. The chorus of the song is infectious, even if it is a bit cliched.

I hated the fact that she was going to sing I Who Have Nothing last night, but after that performance, I wish that Interscope would release that song as a single.

  3. I’m liking this a lot better than last night. It’s no Home, but not a bad first single by any means. She’ll go far with the right music.

  4. well, that’s a lot better than the live performance – which is very unusual for Candice. still not Home, but a good single.

  5. Whoa! I like the production/instrumentation here better than on the live version.

Glover sells it like crazy — she’s really good at singing in a way that convinces the listener that the lyrics, even in cliched bits, really mean something.

This is pretty good. Still more TLC-meets-Mariah-Carey-ish than much of the Candice Glover we’ve seen, but it comes across as a reasonably solid song.

  6. I came to take a gander at this song and it isn’t that bad. I don’t see a big hit but I think it is a solid single. I hope this is the direction they take her becuase I like the Pop/RnB route.

  7. Reminds me a little of Jordin Sparks’ “Battlefield”. I like it. Catchy. I don’t think she was really comfortable with it last night.

  8. So I’m reading this on my iPhone and my hubby is next to me snoring. My headphones are downstairs. I can’t listen to this or Kree’s song until the morning and your comments are KILLING me. But I am very happy to see a positive reaction to both songs.

I remain jealous as a MF however.

    **sobs**

  9. WOW That cover is the makeover she should have gotten all season. She looks truly BEAUTIFUL. I thougt the song was a great winners single, especially for her and the criticism she received. Is she doing any talk shows tomorrow or does that wait till Monday…ie Today Show or Live With Kelly…Maybe The View or something like that. This studio version sounds so much better than te show version. But I keep wondering what winning Idol gives you besides a trophy and a little bit more money. All top 3 are probably getting albums and #4 and #5 might get a try too. Angie got prime placement with 2 duets…Candice got outsung by JHud and Kree, who is she again? Oh well, the top 3 are all getting albums – and the runner up single has also been released so why bother? Even in the years when they both sang the same single, they still would release the losers version too…and what an embarassment if hte loser sells better. I just hope th at mid summer, Candice loses a bit of weight and gets a good stylist, makeup and hair person. THe photo above shows how beautiful she is day in and day on. Congrats Candice…(they didnt say what th e% was so I wonder if she won by a lot)

  10. I really like this song a lot. To borrow Keith Urban’s words, “Its fits her like a Glover” ha ha. Anyways, I like Candice. I hope she does well.

  11. WOW CANDICE ALREADY HAS AN ALBUM COVER (NOT AS GREAT AS ABOVE) AND A ALBUM TITLE. Wow, Idol is desperately trying to remain relevant. If you look at iTunes. Candice’s first album is called MUSIC SPEAKS and is expected to drop exactly 2 months from the finale. That has to be the quickest turnout Ive ever seen. The album cover art is not as good as above. Its obvious above that there was not only airbrushing but a lot more…Candices face above looks thinner…She looks great an maybe by summer, she can look like that…but her album cover has the chubby cheeks and all. I wish her good luck but how much quality can you get in a debut effort in 60 days. She’s gonna have very little input and I hope it doesnt flop and she becomes the latest Idol to get dropped within a year.

  12. She’s been working on the album all season. I don’t think that it’s too different from those who begin working on their albums during the tour, and release them in November.

  13. The West Coast broadcast of Idol just ended.

At this second, I Am Beautiful is sitting at #132 on iTunes overall chart

  14. I’ll take it that’s not good…. Don’t IDOL winner singles go straight to #1??

  15. Normally the singles are released after the performance finale so they have more time to sell before the real finale. This season it took until a couple hours after the actual finale for it to be released, so, so far it’s doing pretty decent I think

  16. Oh, I really like the studio version! Jimmy will get radio to play this. It sounds like a Demi song being sung by Jordin. Love it!

  17. It won’t play. I’m clicking all over it and nothing. Any help, please?

  18. Beautiful! I know it’s good because it’s late but I want to hear it again and again. I’m saying right now it will go to number one.

  19. my last check of the iTunes chart before I head off to get some sleep :)

I Am Beautiful is now at #75 on the overall iTunes chart

Kree’s single (All Cried Out) is at #243

  20. Wonder if “I Am Beautiful” will be played on Contemporary Christian networks? Candice sang it with the religious flavor. Beautiful.

  21. I think it could. I remember Ruben’ s coronation song was played on the gospel station in NYC and it was a bigger stretch imho. She definitely added that nuance tonight. I feel so smart because I called her genre bending the other day, lol.I am listening now. I am enjoying it.

  22. the album cover looks like Candice; the single cover is definitely airbrushed.

  23. Musically the song was chosen for Angie…The chorus was in her key…listen again and picture Angie singing the chorus…

  24. Why are they doing so badly i just can’t wtf, where are those who supported her like crazy really ?
At this moment last year Phillip had like all his songs charting and 9 in the top 100 huh
I hope when people wake up, they’ll buy the girls songs because it’s a shame that they’re underperforming

  25. what makeover… she looks no different (to me) than she has done on the show

  26. This song and the production especially the chorus sound a lot like what Jordin Sparks would sing. It sounds better recorded than live.

  27. better than the live performance (which is odd for Candice)… however, the lyrics are so trite… & it sounds like it’s trying too hard to be a Ryan Tedder song from circa 2009… Halo, Battlefield, Happy, Already Gone…
interesting to see if radio picks it up… without that support (or without a different song to radio in June/July) she’ll maybe have a high debuting album that disappears in a few weeks… shame…

  28. I really like it, I think using Home as a barometer will always disappoint, its hands down the best winners single since A Moment Like This, I wasn’t expecting a winners single as good as that. This suites Candice and she really sells it.

  29. They should send this to Christian stations also because it works perfectly in that genre.

  30. The lyrics are horrible but this is much, much better than the live version so I hope people who thought that it was a cheesefest on the show give it a listen. I could see this song fitting right in with the chart stuff they play at my gym.

  31. It’s starting to grow on me… best of luck to Candice. Sometimes the commercial side really just depends on a bit of luck.

  32. Album #6 Single #19 she broke the Top 20! My favorite since the beginning. Most consistent sing in Idol history!

  33. #19 now, keep it up Candice
Kree is at #58 she’s coming, i hope they can reach the top 10 and i hope Candice hit #1, it’ll be good for her promo

  34. All of the contestants’ songs are still available for sale on iTunes, including Candice’s. Perhaps you meant that 19 is not allowing the sales ranking of Candice’s and Kree’s other songs to be visible (other than their singles), which may be intentional.

  35. So much better than the live performance! It actually sounds current rather than a 90s diva ballad. Whew! Good luck, Candice!!

  36. just played it for the first time. definitely much better thank given credit for. i really like it a lot. it’s not home but there will never be another home. i would rank this in my top five coronation songs!

  37. keep spreading the words about her song! i’ve been telling my friends and colleagues about her and to check out her song.

  38. Okay gotta ask does the beginning of the chorus sound a little off to anyone else? It seems high pitched like they auto-tuned it and made her voice higher and almost echo-y. It was not altered for the better if you ask me. It sounds a bit like the chipettes are singing that part.

  40. I thought they moved her voice back in the mix… muffled it somehow which I didn’t care for. I liked the sound of her vocal on the verses much better.

  41. So glad Candice won! She has a beautiful tone to her voice; really hope she puts out music I will buy.

I didn’t buy the single; not into the lyrics, but I hope the song does well. I hope her album is not full of these types of songs. Although I am not a huge lyrical critic and can enjoy the music and her voice, too many in that genre (Christian music) will make me not want to buy the CD.

(As an example, I bought Melinda Dolittle’s CD to support her, but so many songs on her CD are in the religious vein that it kind of turned me off, no matter how good her voice was)

  42. The song is growing on me. I think it could get some decent radio play in a variety of formats. When Candice did it on the finale and pointed to heaven it was clear (to me) that the “he” in the song is God or Jesus not a bf.

  43. For marketing purposes it would make sense to leave that question open, and let listeners decide for themselves.

  44. During the Red Carpet show, Jim said the song has a spiritual side. If I remember correctly, Candice said she knew it was about a man but after listening to it again, she understood why people might get the spiritual side to it.

  45. #11 now but the gap between it and 10 is so big it’ll take awhile to climb to #10 but maybe not so much after all :)

  47. “For marketing purposes it would make sense to leave that question open…”

Yeah, that’s likely gonna make it palatable to anyone who didn’t think much of lyrics that sounded like the girl in the story got all her validation and self worth from the boyfriend. Which it did.

Maybe Candice had a problem with that, too – but once she changed the focus to ‘Jesus loves me’ instead of ‘so there, and take that’ which was another possible angle of interpretation, it’s hard to ‘unhear’ it and the problem with that would be it turns into CCM territory. The only thing less appealing to me would be if it also morphed into weepy country.

So, I can’t deal with that song – or any of the tracks of the three top finishers. Oh well. I knew that going in – I knew what genres they sang… the odds of the blues or jazz influences being allowed to prevail on the Coronary/first single were slim…and the instrumentation has no special stuff on any of them, that I have heard.

I don’t like this lyric, and I don’t like uplifting CCM , and I think Candice is a truly amazing vocal talent who may yet be given a well-written song to sing that I would want to own. This isn’t it – but I wish her good luck with it. And Congrats on winning Season 12.

  50. ITA. If the song’s a hit, then within a year we’ll see gals using it as a dedication to their dads. (Actually, a Father’s Day ad placement would be a decent start for outside-the-bubble promo.)

The reality that “he” could be interpreted as God doesn’t bar the song from UAC play or even CHR play. It’s not like people with Christian beliefs listen exclusively to CCM and leave the mainstream formats to the non-believers.

  51. I think that it works both ways, and Candice might hurt herself if she lets anyone define the song as only having one meaning.

  52. I’ve been listening to this all morning. This has some self-empowerment/feel-good appeal. I can see it in a positive light for younger girls, and yes, I caught the Christian-radio lean in the lyrics during her performance last night.

  53. Oh and I have to ask anyone else notice how Candice pointed up to the sky when she started singing I am Beautiful? In an earlier thread it was mentioned that some felt that the song had a spiritual vibe to it which I’d also felt. Anyway those motions certainly helped bolster/encourage those beliefs.

  54. Were are you getting the information on the size of the gap between artists? I only see artists rankings not how far apart they are from each other.

  55. Nice, large rotating banners for Candice on the iTunes home and music pages.

  57. Already liked “All Cried Out”, but “I Am Beautiful” is really growing on me. Is it “Home”? Of course not, but it is one of the better coronation songs

  59. I really like this studio version of the song. Nice job by Jimmy Iovine and his crew. Also, props to Candice for her hand in writing the song. Nice first single.

  61. She is at #10 on itunes, and I actually think its decent considering the finale ratings fell by a ton compared to last year. Hopefully the Tonight Show can help it a little bit.

  64. Why so much compression on the mic? On Angie’s song too. It almost sounds auto-tuned, and we KNOW that’s not necessary.

  66. Love her voice – beautiful tone, control, and range – glad she won.

  67. Overproduced on the choruses. Candice’s track should float more clearly above the other tracks.

  69. Candice just tweeted that she is working on her next single that she is very excited about. Like really excited haha. She said it has more of a R&B feel to it and she hinted at a collaboration with Drake.

  71. This sounds really GOOD!! Congratulations to Candice–
Her voice is very beautiful & full of special nuance**
I’ll be looking forward to her CD release to hear more of this lovely voice–
Candice & the TOP 5 (young ladies) are all so special in their own ways–
