Canadian Idol 6! Episode 29 – Top 3 Performance – VIDEO

Bryan Adams is this week’s mentor. The Top 3 each performed two of his songs.

I’m still a little disappointed that Earl Stevenson was voted off this week, but I haven’t completely lost my interest in CI. There’s still Theo Tams, a beautiful singer whose phasing is mature, impeccable. His musicality never fails to impress me, even when he occasionally misses the mark. He should be winning this thing, but I’m not going to hold my breath, especially with his second performance getting so-so marks from the judges. I would not be surprised to find Mitch MacDonald and Drew Wright in the Top 2, with either one of them winning it. They seem to have a ton of hometown support, and Drew has been picking up steam in the last few weeks. I hope I’m proven wrong.

  • Drew Wright…Cuts Like a Knife – Drew decides to “do his own thing” with “Cuts Like a Knife”. But, beyond a chunky guitar riff thrown into the middle, it sounds pretty similar to the original. Bryan likes that he “rocked it out”. Drew’s got some completely unnecessary facial scruff going on–he looks better clean-shaven. Still, his vocal performance continues to improve. The judges like it a lot, except Zack, who says he should have sung it “a lot tougher.”
  • Theo Tams…Heaven Bryan compliments Theo on his piano playing skills. He performs a beautiful, restrained, yet powerful interpretation of “Heaven”. And the judges agree! Zack says it’s one of the two or three best performances in the history of the show.
  • Mitch MacDonald…Heat of The Night” – Bryan says he’s got to sing it like he means it. Well, this is better than last week, when he sang a dark Elliott Smith song with a smile. The interpretation is much better, but his vocals are still whiny, warbly and nasal. I can’t get past that. Farley and Zack thought he looked uncomfortable. Neither Jake nor Sass are buying “Angry” Mitch.
  • Drew Wright…Im Ready – Drew’s interpretation here needed to be amped up a few notches. I didn’t feel any passion from him until the very end, and at that point, it was too little too late. I agree with Zack, who says he didn’t get any “honest intensity” from his performance. Jake disagrees, he sees “real star potential.” Sass agrees with Jake. Farley agrees with Zack…and me. Drew’s got a lot going on–looks, decent vocals and guitar playing skills–but he’s yet to develop a strong stage presence. He’s the lite version of whichever artist he happens to be covering at the moment.
  • Theo Tams…When Your Gone – Bryan Adams wrote the song, and it was a big hit for Mel C. (or B or Z or Zzzz. Who cares). Haven’t heard the version, don’t want to hear it either. Although Theo’s stage skills are improving, I prefer him sitting behind the piano. But, he knows he’s gotta mix it up to keep advancing. The judges don’t like it much at all. I wish he’d left a better last impression with the voting audience. “Heaven” should have been second.
  • Mitch MacDonald…When You Love Someone – Gah. It’s like the sound of cats being strangled, I tell you. Add out of tune to my previous list of vocal complaints. This is dreadful. Zack says Mitch has a distinctive tone. That’s one way of putting it. And a Paul Simon vibe. Uh, OK. The judges love this one. Maybe they’re just giving in to the inevitable.
