Blake Lewis Signs with 19R/Arista and other S6 Record News

Listen to Jordin Sparks upcoming single “Tattoo” at AOL Music.

Last Friday, Jordin’s deal was announced. This Friday it’s Blake Lewis’s turn.

Blake Lewis, the beat-boxing runner-up to Jordin Sparks on the sixth season of American Idol has been signed to 19 Recordings/Arista Records. He is already recording an album with producers from JR Rotem to Sean Kingston, due to be released at the end of the year.

Clive Davis says of Lewis, “Blake has a strong music sensibility and knows who he is and what his music should represent. His collaborators are all knocked out by him.”

Blake has already recorded at least 8 songs, and I’m hearing that the stuff is GREAT. Blake will release his album sometime in November.

ETA: Original press release from Arista, pulled from comments.

And in other news, Chris Sligh talks about signing with a Christian label on his blog. You can listen to some demos he’s been working on on his My Space.

I’ll have more on Chris and Jordin’s tunes later today…

  1. You’re fast MJ! :D Wonder why it’s now December for the release? He’s been saying November all summer…

  2. Finally, an announcement. How exciting! :clap_tb: I can’t wait to hear (and buy) it. Interesting that he was signed with Arista.

I’m glad for Chris Sligh that he’s going to be able to do the music he wants but I’m probably less likely to buy his album. I was hoping he’d go the other route by choosing to be more mainstream but he’s got to do what’s right for him so I hope the album does well.

  3. No Star, I’m just HIGH this morning. Or something. It’s still November…

    I fixed the post.

  4. Jordin……more sophmoric-ly written pop drivel………won’t make Platinum….but neither will Blake, so S6 crashes and burns again…….

Sounds like S7 is being “directed” toward another meltdown……..last season anyone??

  5. Nos, you sound so sure.. What makes you say that? Did you say the same about Kelly and Carrie?

  6. Nos, you sound so sure.. What makes you say that? Did you say the same about Kelly and Carrie?

    Exactly,

Only once both albums are released, then we can determine who is the most successful.

  7. That’s a terrible song. And as comedian Rob Paravonian points out, it’s one of those “Pachelbel Canon in D” pop songs that all. have. the. same. melody. Ugh.

  8. He is already recording an album with producers from JR Rotem to Sean Kingston, due to be released at the end of the year.

When I read that, I thought “What? Blake is being produced by a 16 year old kid who just released his first album?” LOL.

I wonder what happened in the editing process to that sentence (JR Rotem is one of Blake’s producers and Sean Kingston was one of the people he produced).

I also wonder why they are so vague on the release date. “Late 2007”. You’d think that by now they would have pegged at least a month if not have a specific date to throw out (goodness knows that those dates get changed enough). And with 8 tracks recorded, couldn’t they announce which one is going to be his single and when it’s coming out? Of course, he is at Arista who took 2 months to release a single for Taylor last year, so maybe this is just how that label typically operates.

In any event. Yay! News! Congrats to Blake!

  9. I also wonder why they are so vague on the release date. à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Late 2007à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ³.

Jordin’s press release was vague in terms of the release date of her album also and I assume if this year is anything like last year’s assortment of date changes, then this year will be no different. LOL

I have to say I am excited as well!

    Yay Blake!

  10. Jordinà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s press release was vague in terms of the release date of her album also

Jordin’s press release is at least gave us a release month for the album and a very specific date for a single.

I’m just griping because I like numbers. I’m like Oliver, “Please sir, can I have some more?” Why have a press release almost completely bereft of any information? I could see if this was back in June when he’d only just become the “co-winner”, but we are now three months down the production cycle. Walmart is already planning their Christmas flyers. Somebody must have some more specific details/ideas.

Nos, you sound so sure.. What makes you say that? Did you say the same about Kelly and Carrie?

I said as much about Kelly’s latest self-serving diatribe….didn’t follow Carrie, but obviously she’s doing quite well.

Blake doesn’t even have as good of a following as Taylor….and how many has he sold again? Exactly….

Until AI allows someone with true originallity and real talent through….instead of the kareoke stars they turn out….their going nowhere but downhill.

Some of the quotes from some of the S7 participants leads me to believe that S7 wil be a train wreck of historic porportions…oh well, it was fun for a minute or two….

  12. I heard Jordin’s sing and I like her. Her voice sounds great recorded and she can really put the feeling into her music. Will it break out like Wait for You (other Stargate idol song)? I don’t know but it’s good. Comparisons are odious, but Jordin can do this stuff much, much better than Kat. I’m interested in hearing Blake’s stuff and hope his single releases soon.

  13. I also wonder why they are so vague on the release date. à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Late 2007à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ³. Youà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢d think that by now they would have pegged at least a month if not have a specific date to throw out (goodness knows that those dates get changed enough).

    Kirsten,

I was looking back at Chris Daughtrys press release from last year, and it never give a date, or even a month either. I think it said something along the lines of…later in the year, as far as when the record would be released.

Kat, since you brought up Rob Paravonian “Pachelbel Canon” I thought I would go ahead and post it. It is funny.

Complete and utter speculation: Maybe they’re trying to reemphasize the importance of winning by reverting back to the AI-winner-releases-first doctrine. If the release date of Jordin’s album is pushed back, rather than also push back another set release date, TPTB can just say, “Hey, we were going to release Blake’s album on this date anyways.”

Yeah, I know, I’m crap at theories.

And with 8 tracks recorded, couldnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t they announce which one is going to be his single and when ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s coming out? Of course, he is at Arista who took 2 months to release a single for Taylor last year, so maybe this is just how that label typically operates.

Heh…it’s quite possible that Taylor’s situation was a whole different barrel of rabid monkeys, so that might be an unfair comparison on Blake’s part.

ETA: In Jordin’s case – and aside from the coronation singles – isn’t this the first time they’ve gone with the strategy of releasing a single from the actual album in order to create buzz for the album? Please correct me if I’m wrong…

  15. Yay! For Blake!
Finally wer got official press! So ARISTA it is..

I am thinking Blake certainly impressed CLive with his stuff. I love that! Can’t wait for his album.

As for Jordin’s single, I am sure it will do well with the Hannah Montana crowd.
    But not for me, thanks.

  16. I was looking back at Chris Daughtrys press release from last year, and it never give a date, or even a month either.

Yes, but as I pointed out earlier, I wouldn’t seem so odd to me if it had been a June press release which it was for Chris Daughtry. TPTB have been publishing Jordin’s November release since the begining of July (it was listed in BB magazine’s 4th quarter release article). November is only 10 weeks away now. Surely they have a date in mind for Blake’s album? Probably it will leak next week like Jordin’s did this week. We’ve just waited so long for info, why can’t they throw us a few more bones?

In Jordinà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s case – and aside from the coronation singles – isnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t this the first time theyà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ve gone with the strategy of releasing a single from the actual album in order to create buzz for the album?

I don’t know the entire history of all Idol albums, but Carrie had a single released a few weeks before “Some Hearts” came out and Kellie Pickler released a single several weeks before “Small Town Girl” dropped (RHH was released the week of September 11th and the album was released on October 31st). Kat released “Over It” a few weeks before her album dropped this year too.

  17. Congrats to Blake! That’s a very nice press release and nice comments from Simon and Clive. One question though, did You Give Love a Bad Name and Time of the Season actually do that well on the charts? I remember the downloads being pretty good but I never follow actual charts.

  18. Call me crazy but I think “Tatoo” will be a big hit. It’s hooky, well sung and kids love tatoos. Will she rise to Kelly Clarkson heights of popularity? Doubt it, but I think she could do well in High School Musical market.

  19. One question though, did You Give Love a Bad Name and Time of the Season actually do that well on the charts? I remember the downloads being pretty good but I never follow actual charts.

There are a lot of charts. Season 6 Idols did okay on sales, but none of them got any significant airplay. I believe it was Ken Barnes a few weeks ago who confirmed that they did not chart on any airplay chart.

Here is some chart history for the songs you mentioned:

    Hot 100:
    YGLABN: 18-21-59-86

    Pop 100
    YGLABN: 20-21-51-69
    TOTS: 74-82

    Hot Digital Songs
    YGLABN: 9-11-39-63

    Hot Digital Tracks:

  20. Love the sly way they dropped Leona Lewis’s name into B’s press release, heh.

  21. I don’t mean to be mean, Star, but could you spell out Blake’s name, because when I saw “B” (name into B’s press release) I thought you meant Beyonce. Just IMHO.

  22. Tattoo?–I swear that’s Kat singing. Did they save Kat’s leftover songs for this year’s winner?

  23. I knew who Star meant. Why would we be talking about Beyonce in a thread about B’s press release?

  24. I donà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t mean to be mean, Star, but could you spell out Blakeà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s name, because when I saw à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Bà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ (name into Bà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s press release) I thought you meant Beyonce. Just IMHO.

    Who’s Beyonce???

  25. From what Blake reportedly told a fan (IIRC), the two songs that we have heard that will probably be on the album are “She Loves The Way” and “Emotional Waterfalls.” With that limited information, I can’t predict how well he will do without actually hearing the music. I will say that if he does as well as Elliott, Taylor, Bucky or Kellie, then I’ll be satisfied and happy for him. :)

As for Jordin, I agree with Beesims. I see her doing respectably well in her chosen genre. She’s obviously being marketed to the tweens, and I think they will like Tattoo. I doubt she’ll get Carrie/Kelly numbers, but I can see her going gold. Time will tell, I guess.

ETA: I am more convinced now that the delayed press releases had something to do with Jordin rather than Blake.

Oh, and re: Clive’s remarks about giving Blake creative control. Perhaps he did learn a lesson from the Bo Bice fiasco.

  26. Not a instant fan of Jordin’s first single at ALL, unlike how I was with Elliott’s Stargate-produced track. I was expecting something upbeat…along the lines of “Umbrella”. “Tattoo” not only suffers from bland production, but I not feeling the hook either. But, I guess we’ll see how its received.

And congrats to Blake. Not a fan, but I’m not writing him completely off…yet.

  27. Star, don’t change a thing and call him what you want. Most of us can understand you just fine if we take the nanosecond to realize this is a thread about Blake (Blake as in starts with the letter B).

Congrats to Blake! I’m so happy for him. I just wanted him to get a record out; don’t really care how much he sells or anything like that. I hope it’s a good album as I am tired of the disappointing Idol albums. I love the producers he’s working with but I don’t want to become overly optimistic just yet. I’m wondering how he hooked up with some of these people. I know BT was of his own intiative (which I admire) but Mike Elizondo and JR Rotem are a major thing.

    Anyway, yay Blake!

  28. Congratulations Blake!! I’m so happy for you. :)

PJ, I hope that’s right about SLTW and EW. Those are my 2 fav pre-AI Blake songs. :)

On a different note, Elliott sounded beautiful on this soap. Too bad Constantine had to follow him because it certainly didn’t benefit him to do so. ;)

  29. Blake doesnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t even have as good of a following as Taylorà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦.and how many has he sold again? Exactlyà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦.

Daughtry obviously didn’t have as big a following as Taylor either seeing as he finished fourth. Didn’t seem to matter much to his sales figures. I don’t think you can drop the ax on anyone just yet. You can’t say how poorly or how well an album is going to do without actually hearing it. I HATE Jordin’s new song, but for all I know, the rest of the album might be amazing. I’ll wait for the entire album before I write the poor girl off though. I, for one, liked this season a lot, and definitely MORE than seasons 3 and 4 combined. They definitely have more singing talent than season 1, 3, and 4. But it’s television and they choose what to show and what not to show us.

Re: Blake and Arista/J. I think it’s interesting how Clive chose to take Blake under his own label. I understand why the diva-heavy schedule in the fall makes it hard for him to give Jordin what she needs, but at the same time, Idol winners usually find their homes at Arista. Interesting.

  30. It’s crazy to try to speculate too much at this point, IMO. We don’t even have material from anyone but Jordin and Sligh yet. I mean it’s fun and all, but there’s no way we can write off anyone really.

That said, Blake seems like he’s in the best position of all right now to me. He had the largest fanbase at the concerts, he makes music that could fit in today’s radio, is cute enough to inspire fan crushes, And is on a label that knows how to market what he does. Unless 19E try to take the edge off his music, he should be good.

Daughtry obviously didnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t have as big a following as Taylor either seeing as he finished fourth. Didnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t seem to matter much to his sales figures.

True, and I’d add that at the concerts , which to me is the best early indicator of who’s fans are willing to spend actual money, he often had the most reaction or just as much fan reaction as Taylor. Which says to me that the potential to move records was high if he put out something that appealed to those fans. And we all know how that turned out. Ha!

  31. YAY, Blake’s finally official! Cannot wait to hear some of what he’s recorded. I love Jordin, her single’s cute but not my thing. It’s a bit too “High School Musical” for me, but hopefully she can have a hit with it. I like her, she’s a sweet kid.

  32. Blake seems to be in a good position but who knows?
Daughtry’s music seemed dull and Wait for You sounded too boy band (and I’m a fan of both those guys) so hit prediction is very tough. I liked Runaround and thought it was a fun song. I think the trick is to connect the music with your Idol image. If Blake can do that he should be okay.

  33. Yeah I totally agree jpfan, things look good for him from here but really, who knows? Trying to predict a hit record notoriously difficult, even for the professionals. You just never know what is going to happen.

  34. This single will do very well. It’s good. Along the lines of High School Musical and Hannah Montana, but saying that, my 20 year old daughter really likes it ‘specially the beginning. She has all of Elliott’s songs on her ipod also.

I think people will be surprised who will actually make it in the big bad music world. I’m a huge Taylor fan, but know that he isn’t pop or country and won’t sell as much. I don’t care as long as I get to buy his music and attend his concerts. I think Jordin will out sell him in a heartbeat. Blake might, but it will be a one time only thing. I don’t see the interest in Blake lasting long.

  35. Well, while we’re speculating, I don’t think concert/fan reaction is an accurate predictor of sales. Case in point… last year’s bathroom breaks were Bucky and Kellie. They are both doing quite well. I know that part of it is that country music fans tend to be more open to AI artists in general, but still. Ace has yet to put out an album (hurry up, already!), and he was a crowd favorite on the tour last year.

True dat, pj. I forgot about Bucky! Point taken. Though I didn’t really mean it as so much a predictor of sales as much as a predictor of potential – as in strong opening weeks, large built-in base to carry a release through it’s early stages… that kind of thing. But yeah, it’s not like a bad showing at the concert dooms anyone. A good record is a good record, indeed.

  37. Reminder:

    1. Leave the modding to me.

    2. Please word your opinions carefully. Keep the opinion focused on the Idol and the subject–refrain from making judgemental comments on how your fellow posters are thinking or expressing their opinion.

    Thank you.

  38. Since Jordin’s CD won’t be released until late November, I wonder why they are releasing the first single next week.

Maybe they are testing the waters; maybe they are giving the song time to build on the radio. Still seems like a long time to me.

Is this normal? I guess I never really paid attention to song release date/CD release date coordination before Elliott. “Wait For You” was released about 19 days before his CD was released.

  39. I still think Blake will outsell Jordin. Her single is just plain cheesy, sorry. Blake always sold more downloads than Jordin, just saying.

But honestly I don’t care what happens in the end. Some people think Blake will be the Daughtry of season 6 and I tend to agree. But it still is to early to tell. I am just happy for him that he got a major record deal and that he is enjoying every bit of it.

In the end, the music will speak for itself.
Blake’s music IMO will be perfect for Top 40. If he breaks into that radio format he will be a success and gain new fans. I am confident that if Clive is giving his creative control that means he was impressed with his music, just like he was with Chris D.

  40. I think people will be surprised who will actually make it in the big bad music world. Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢m a huge Taylor fan, but know that he isnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t pop or country and wonà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t sell as much. I donà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t see the interest in Blake lasting long.

I am a fan of Taylor as well but as it was said in some of the above posts, crowd reactions to performances can be a bit deceiving and at the time, J/Arista was expecting 5 million copies for Taylor’s debut last year and that did not happen and not only that, but unfortunately most of the radio programmers have flatly refused to play his music which is sad. I am thrilled that Taylor is happy being a touring performer because he’s getting to do what he wants and that’s being a touring musician, the life he’s always dreamed of. Partly what started his downhill slide was when he switched management teams in favor of the Firm and the Firm has not done a good job promoting Taylor at all! Another thing that has hurt him has been all the concert cancellations for this summer and I can tell you from being on other forums that a lot of the fans were extremely upset that bought tickets to these canceled shows. My local radio station here in Wilmington, NC doesn’t play Taylor either, but they did give away tickets to the Cary, NC show which was the first cancellation on the tour.

  41. Maybe they are releasing the single now so that it keeps her “name out there”. It’s been a while and since TIMN didn’t really see the light of day on radio, it’s probably a good move to release something. It might be like Kat did last season where she released other singles before her first one, “Over It”, just to keep her name out there while the public waited for her CD.

  42. Maybe they are releasing the single now so that it keeps her à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“name out thereà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ . Ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s been a while and since TIMN didnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t really see the light of day on radio, ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s probably a good move to release something. It might be like Kat did last season where she released other singles before her first one, à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Over Ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ , just to keep her name out there while the public waited for her CD.

I agree with your thinking. In fact, that has been the discussion this past week since her press release came out. I think that’s exactly why they are releasing it on Monday. They know that as far as popularity between 1 & 2 that Blake seems to be the crowd favorite at the shows the majority of the time and with the poor charting of TIMN as you mentioned, they needed to get a single out quick to try and maybe jump start her success and put her name back in the public again. This is one thing that has hurt season 6 from Jordin’s press release taking so long to be made public.

  43. True dat, pj. I forgot about Bucky! Point taken. Though I didnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t really mean it as so much a predictor of sales as much as a predictor of potential – as in strong opening weeks, large built-in base to carry a release through ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s early stagesà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦ that kind of thing. But yeah, ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s not like a bad showing at the concert dooms anyone. A good record is a good record, indeed.

Well, I certainly agree with you there. It does help to have a strong fanbase out of the gate.

I also think it’s a good move to release Jordin’s single sooner rather than later. It gets people excited about the album. Plus, it probably helps single sales. If I had the album first, then I would never buy a single. But if I like the artist, I might purchase the single to tide me over until the album is released.

  44. Some people think Blake will be the Daughtry of season 6

Ummm…in what respect? As the biggest SELLER of season 6? That may be possible. But compared to Daughtry in general, I don’t see Blake coming within sniffing distance of Daughtry’s sales…unless Clive transforms Blake into a totally unrecognizable form of himself. Blake’s music really doesn’t seem all that suited for Top 40.

  45. I figure that there won’t be any “big sellers” this year seeing as how both ratings and concert attendance are notably down.

  46. I figure that there wonà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t be any à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“big sellersà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ this year seeing as how both ratings and concert attendance are notably down.

You may be right about there not being any “big sellers” this year, but I don’t think that ratings or concert attendance has much to do with it. To be a big seller, the music has to appeal to folks outside of the initial AI fanbase. Carrie and Daughtry both managed to do that.

  47. To be a big seller, the music has to appeal to folks outside of the initial AI fanbase.

    pj,

I think you hit the nail on the head with that one. The AI fanbase will only take them so far, it really is a matter of connecting with those on the outside. I agree it will help with opening week sales, but after that….

  48. It’s been a while since I visited this site and when I came here I was greeted by this headline on the top of the page. YAAAAYY!! I’m so happy for Blake! I can’t wait to see the Idol crew tomorrow.

  49. I wonder if releasing a single means making it available for sale on itunes? If it does, that’s a good test of Jordin’s fan base since they tend to buy the first day.

  50. Well, that’s OK.
Even if Blake just sells one album I am happy he got a record deal and is living is dream.
He deserves every bit of this. He has been working on his music for seven years.

Go Blake! Can’t wait for A.D.D.

  51. Blake’s new music apparently is perfect for Top 40. A girl at IDF listened to some tracks and she said that his new music is perfect for that format. She said she could totally see him topping the charts.

I am telling you I think Blake will gain fans outside his AI fanbase easily, his music is great, current and he is a cute marketable guy. What else can you ask for? Go Team Plaid!

  52. Let’s just clarify one thing: an artist who is signed to a major record label and whose debut CD sells one copy would be released, dropped, ejected, booted, expelled, and dismissed so fast, the fan who bought that single copy would probably still be struggling to open the shrinkwrap when that artist’s sorry ass hit the proverbial road.

It’s the music BUSINESS, not a personal service industry.

  53. Nevada:
When I said ONE record I was talking in figurative speech.

  54. Good new for Idol winners (and runner ups): major label, promo, buzz, excellent producers. Bad news: expectations are high: selling 300-600K doesn’t cut it. Although Taylor’s “poor” showing of almost 700K will problem help Jordin. Blake needs to sell more than Kat though or I think he’ll be labeled a disappointment as well.

  55. probably not problem of course. The point remains that excellent sales for debut artists are seen as flop sales for Idol winners/runner ups.

  56. I still say the “formula” needs to change……too many of the same ol’ same ol’…..

When they tell a singer…”you’re not what we’re looking for…”…maybe they need to LOOK at someone who ain’t from the same cookie cutter….maybe it’s “them” who need to be changed….

  57. Blake will sell more than Kat easily. Come on. How can you even compare?
He will also sell more than Taylor very easily. His music is current and he is marketable. Taylor wasn’t either of those things.

I even have the feeling he will sell more than Jordin. But that’s just me. Ken Barnes over at USA Today even made a breakdown from past downloads during the season and he said that saleswise: Blake was the man.

  58. I always find it best when predicting CD sales to keep expectations low. That way you are always pleasantly surprised.

  59. Wow – Blake actually got some pretty decent praise from Clive. My curiosity is increasing about his cd. I see nothing mildly exciting about Jordin’s single… YAWN…

  60. As lame as the coronation singles have been in the past, they’ve kept the Idol and runner-up on the charts and their names out there long enough for their first CD to be release (SOTR has remained on the single sales chart for all but one week since its release over a year ago). This year with no physical single out there to tease and tempt fans, getting a new single out is critical. Other than those of us who keep up with all things Idol and go to shows etc, I would bet most people, even casual fans, have pretty much forgotten all about Jordin.

I’m not crazy about Jordin’s single, but I think it will do well. But, then again, “Over It” did okay and look how poorly Kat’s CD sold. It’s a real crapshoot out there musically. Blake could catch on, though. He’s current and talented and has won over quite a few reviewers while on tour. I look forward to seeing the show next weekend.

  61. “I always find it best when predicting CD sales to keep expectations low. That way you are always pleasantly surprised.”

    Amen to that!

  62. jordin’s song is ok. better than kats for sure. ac i think. sounds a wee bit country.

    but seriously…

who trapped a chihuahua in her song? it is yapping every 4 secs to get out.

let the dog out of the song!!

  63. I have to disagree that it’s a sure thing that Blake will outsell Taylor. I think he has a lot of POTENTIAL to catch on with the public, but who knows? He has charisma, talent, and a vision that could turn out really cool or really disappointing. I’m so hoping it’s the latter. I’m a fan of almost all the artists he’s mentioned as influences, so my hopes are high. The good part is that he’s being allowed to carry out his vision and if it sucks, then we can’t blame old Clive.

A pre-Thanksgiving release would have been nice for sales, but that looks doubtful for him now.

ETA: I am happy that his press release is getting attention. I opened my comcast.net to get my email and it was one of the top stories.

Since Jordinà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s CD wonà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t be released until late November, I wonder why they are releasing the first single next week.

Maybe they are testing the waters; maybe they are giving the song time to build on the radio. Still seems like a long time to me.

I agree. I think there are 2 reasons they are doing this now. To keep her name out there. For whatever reason they didn’t back “This Is My Now”. No physical release. It was only sold on ITunes and the American Idol site. It was the only winner single EVER not reach #1 or #2 on the Hot 100 chart. AI/19E totally dropped the ball.

The other reason I think is to test the waters. I still think they have NO idea what kind of sound to give Jordin. Which is evident in the totally generic song she recorded.

I read that she has record about 4 songs already. I bet you they run the gamut in style. If this one falls flat, I bet you another single will get released after the tour ends.

Is this normal? I guess I never really paid attention to song release date/CD release date coordination before Elliott. à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Wait For Youà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ was released about 19 days before his CD was released.

It IS early. Even for the normal record release cycle. A full 3 months ahead of the album? It’s usually 2 months and accomanied by a music video.

  65. Blake will sell more than Kat easily. Come on. How can you even compare?
He will also sell more than Taylor very easily. His music is current and he is marketable. Taylor wasnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t either of those things.

Lots of people thought Kat was very marketable and lord knows RCA spent tons of money on promoting her. The point some are trying to make is these things aren’t always so easy to predict.

I always find it best when predicting CD sales to keep expectations low. That way you are always pleasantly surprised.

And not letdown when high expectations don’t come to pass.

  66. I still say the à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“formulaà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ needs to changeà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦Ãƒ ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦too many of the same olà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ same olà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢Ãƒ ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦..

    When they tell a singerà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦Ãƒ ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ youà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢re not what weà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢re looking forà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦Ãƒ ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ Ãƒ ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦maybe they need to LOOK at someone who ainà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t from the same cookie cutterà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦.maybe ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“themà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ who need to be changedà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦.

None of us know nothing. We don’t know how this will sell. But I agree that the same singers are winning Idol (except for Fantasia who had that bluesy, jazzy rough soul sound)….but Jordin’s song could easily be sung by Kat or Kelly or Carrie. Too much cookie cutter voice for me. I can’t wait for someone with a distinguable voice to come along.

  67. “Lots of people thought Kat was very marketable and lord knows RCA spent tons of money on promoting her. The point some are trying to make is these things arenà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t always so easy to predict.’

I think Kat sunk her own battleship with the style of the CD, her constant posing, and other irritants. She should have appealed to the same demographic as Jordin (the HSM set), but she alienated herself early on and never recovered. All one has to do is watch her Leno performance of “Love Story” to catch that blunder! Jordin will certainly do better than Kat. She is, after all only 17!

  68. I think Kat could have easily had gone gold if they released her album in November and not in January. January is known for being the doldrums of sales. People are already broke from all that Christmas spending.

They kept putting off her album. I read that she was going in one direction, Clive didn’t like it, scrapped it, then went into the R&B lite direction.

It didn’t help either that even though she finished 2nd, she was the 4th Idol that season to get her album out and by then Daughtry had proven his dominence. And Pickler had already gone gold.

I also think McPhee was never passionate about music. She seemed far more interested in jump starting an acting career. Which is coming to fruition now.

  69. Jordin will certainly do better than Kat. She is, after all only 17!

Jordan’s single sounds just like Kat’s whole album, who sounds like every pop female out there, but the biggest difference between the two is that Jordan has a better voice.

  70. but the biggest difference between the two is that Jordan has a better voice.

But is that enough? I have no idea. The song doesn’t seem catchy enough to me to sell as is. I wonder what kind of image they are going to try to give her? Kat was like this big blob of bland marketing wise, Jordin has personality but how will they package it? The mind boggles.

    :ponder_tb:

  71. You would be surprised at the politics of the recording business. I worked at Motown in the 60s and I don’t think it’s changed. Record CEOs have their favorites and will do whatever it takes to get the best writers. I remember that little feud between Mariah and JLo when Mariah was breaking up w/Tommy Mottola and to get even, he stole one of Mariah’s songs and gave it to Jlo. At Motown, people won’t believe this, but Berry Gordy was going to drop young Stevie Wonder until his mom stepped in and made some demands. But they can hold up records to benefit one artist over another. All type of sh**Yt goes on.

I think Kat’s absence on the tour is what got her off to a bad start, I don’t think that sit well with 19E/M/R, whatever. And I never felt that Clive was THAT sold on either Taylor or Kat, but he was tied to them due to contracts with 19E. You can tell Clive’s enthusiasm about an artist by his press release and watch his Grammy parties on the internet. That tells you a lot.

Plus, as for Chris D., Tommy Mottola was trying to sign him too.

    Jordin will have to

    sell

and I mean sell this song.

  72. Go B

PJ and Sarah from now on instead of saying blame Canada everyone can say blame Jordin.

    Her single is total carp.

  73. I, too, think that Jordin sounnds better than Kat, but gawdamighty Tatoo sounds like it could be Kat’s.

  74. For ONCE I agree with you Chicago. LOL!

I don’t think Clive is enthusiastic about Jordin AT ALL. He put her at a label as far away from his involvement as possible.

He’s got Mariah, Whitney, Alicia Keyes and his new baby Leona Lewis ready to release this fall.

Isn’t Mariah and Alicia scheduled to drop the same week Jordin’s CD will? They’re gonna CRUSH her.

By reading the press releases, it’s obvious to me that Clive is quite excited about Blake and is pulling out all the stops. (and I am NOT a Blake fan so I’m not being biased).

And I agree that last year Clive wasn’t keen on Taylor or Kat. He preferred Chris Daughtry and Daughtry got his full backing with a big push for radio play.

I think it’s a bad sign it took SO long to find a record label for Jordin.

I think Blake got settled rather quickly and has already recorded 8 songs; but they had to wait to announce him because Jordin had to be announced first.

  75. Snuffles, if Jordin’s dad is co-managing, believe me — she will treated right. If you look at Matthew Knowles who is hands-on with his daughters, he makes sure that they’re treated right. :)
But you make a good point too, he’s got some heavy hitters – let’s not forget Jennifer Hudson – coming online. I see September – November when all these women release their records as the “battle of the Broads.” :)
    Going to be interesting.

But on the other hand, Jordin doesn’t HAVE TO SING…she can do a Kat and go TV or movies.

  76. Re: Blake selling more than Taylor.

I dunno. I thought about this on my way from work today: would Blake be able to reach sales of Elliott, Kellie, or Taylor (Daughtry’s not even in the equation). Listening to his stuff prior to Idol, it seems like his type of music (since he’s “in control”, apparently) missed the Top 40 train by a couple of decades. I’m listening to one of his songs on YouTube and it reminds me of Taylor’s kind of sound (“Dumpty Humpty”)…and I could totally see Taylor singing it.

Soooo…off the bat, I’d put him somewhere between 250,000 and 400,000 as an overall total.

  77. I just noticed I said that I hoped Blake’s album is disappointing. I meant I hope it’s cool! LOL. :)

    *smiles at Hez*

  78. Tony,

I think those hot producers Clive is handing Blake will help him update his sound. Besides, the 80s vibe is hot now. Just listen to Rihanna’s album.

  79. snuffles I’m sort in the middle with both Blake and Jordin and I agree. The first thing that caught my eye was Clive saying that the people working with Blake are impressed with him. I had a feeling the press release comments would be telling once the rumor started Blake was going to Arista and Jordin to Jive. It was a hunch I had. I expect them both to get decent publicity. If Jive is unsure what they want to do with Jordin the long buildup for the single might be wise.

Re: Blake selling more than Taylor.

I dunno. I thought about this on my way from work today: would Blake be able to reach sales of Elliott, Kellie, or Taylor (Daughtryà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s not even in the equation). Listening to his stuff prior to Idol, it seems like his type of music (since heà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“in controlà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ , apparently) missed the Top 40 train by a couple of decades.

Is he in that much control? Looking at that press release I don’t see much focus on his songwriting or anything. If Clive has any hand in this I can’t see him letting him release something that sounds completely retro and a couple of the producers they have working with him do seem to be working with people that have Top 40 hits. What Blake (or any artist) wants and actually gets in the end is a different story. I’m not even going to begin to predict sales for Blake or Jordin but with proper promotion and one or two radio friendly songs I think Jordin can do or come close to Taylor’s numbers and Blake could do Elliott’s numbers. I love Elliott like crazy and his numbers are very good for an indie artist, but IMO his numbers aren’t such a stretch for someone that will have 19E and Clive’s backing.

I think ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s a bad sign it took SO long to find a record label for Jordin.

Kind of goes along with what Phil told that fan I guess.

  80. I think those hot producers Clive is handing Blake will help him update his sound. Besides, the 80s vibe is hot now. Just listen to Rihannaà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s album.

Exactly. Blake isn’t working with people that made hits for Rihanna and Gym Class Heroes for nothing. Plus did you notice in that press release they made sure to mention Blake’s working with top producers AND songwriters. ODL loves him some SONGWRITERS. *flashes back to his AI finale speech*

I hope that Blake sells enough albums to be considered successful. Other than that, I really don’t care. Mostly, I just hope I like his record (because it’s all about meeee!).

ETA Taylor singing “Dumpty Humpty”?? LOL.

  81. I don’t think you could ever compare Blake’s potential with Blake.
Taylor is an old soul musician, his music is old fashiones and that is why he never got air play. Besides he was not marketable, it’s the truth.

Blake is the total opposite. He is cute, marketable he has pop voice perfect for Top 40 radio, his style is very current. That will certainly bring him fans outside AI that Taylor never achieved.

I think he will make platinum EASILY. From what I read, he is the one getting the best reviews on tour, his album is also the most anticipated.
Hey he also has tween fans that Taylor never had. Little girls love Blake. Tweens, teenagers, twentysomethings a lot. And those are the ones who buy records. Maybe he won’t sell like Daughtry (tough order) but he will be very successful. I am positive.

  82. I am still amused that people think that Blake is just going to an 80’s music album. Heh.

He is just infusing those sounds to songs and making them current. The girl that heard his songs was completely impressed and said his music was perfect for Top 40. Can’t wait to hear it!

  83. Taylor really is out of the mainstream and his real strength is live performances. That’s where he’s happiest and that’s where he seems the most free to do his thing. I saw him a couple of weeks ago, and he was outstanding. It’s hard to capture that energy on a CD unless they do a live one (not a bad idea, actually). On the other hand, Blake is all about technology and will record very, very well. I think he could be this season’s best seller – not Daughtry-esque, but solid.

As for Jordin, with the popularity of the HSM and Hannah Montana type stuff, I think she’ll do okay as well. Kat didn’t appeal to that demographic.

By the way, I love Sligh’s “Something Beautiful.” Real good song. He’s fast becoming my fave!

  84. Until I hear Blake’s music, I can’t really say how he’ll do. I don’t think either Blake or Jordin have huge fan bases (certainly less than Chris or Taylor) and their sales will depend on how good their albums are. They may go platinum but it won’t be a “slam dunk.”

  85. I think Jordin’s single will do pretty well. She is liked a lot more than Kat because of her personality. This song is cheesy- but have you heard the Top 40 lately? A lot of cheesy songs. Jordin can sing up tempo better than Kat and the teen crowd likes her.

I think Blake will do alright. He had a large fan base this season and they will probably buy his records. I knew that Taylor Hicks was going to be a bust as soon as he auditioned. I usually am good at predicting these and I think Jordin will be behind Kelly and Carrie, but ahead of Ruben and Taylor. She will probably do better than Fantasia, making her the third highest out of the ‘winners’.

Also- I really see Phil Stacey doing well in the charts. He can be marketed to country/crossover/rock pop and be very succesful. I’d also be willing to take a gamble on Haley Scarnato and have her sing skany ho music.

  86. First of all, Hez is my friend. :)

    but seriouslyà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦

who trapped a chihuahua in her song? it is yapping every 4 secs to get out.

let the dog out of the song!!

    LMAO. I love folkgirl.

Mostly, I just hope I like his record (because ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s all about meeee!).

Yeah, you know how it goes with us selfish fans and that ONE record we want the artist to sell.

    ETA: Taylor singing à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Dumpty Humptyà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ?? LOL.

    LOL indeed.

Congratulations to B. You know, as in B-shorty, B-lake. I was pleased to see the comments from Simon Fuller and Clive in the article. We’ll see how the album does. And yeah, I can TOTALLY see an 80’s album just being redone since Blake’s working with guys like JR Rotem, Ryan Tedder, S*A*M, and Mike Elizondo. Uh huh. Sure can. :rolleyes_wp:

Oh and songs those guys work on are NEVER on the radio. EVER. Nope. Not top 40 hits either. Nope. Oh wait. What? “Beautiful Girls” has been #1 on the charts? Whoops. My bad.

(oh and star, call Blake “B” all you want… as long as you don’t say “B is shibby.” Then? I will have to hurt you. :innocent1_tb: )

  87. Sarah, don’t you mean B-b-b-b-b-lake? :wink1_tb:

Yes, I have high hopes for B’s album and success, but I’m not going to make wild ass predictions (ala hwc last year).

ETA: I was very pleased to read Clive’s statement that Blake’s collaborators were “all knocked out by him.” That tells me there’s some chemistry with the peeps he’s working with, which hopefully will lead to some great stuff.

  88. LOL. No problem. Nothing like a fresh perspective from someone who has not yet posted her thougts. ;)

Honestly? He has a good shot at platinum. He’s got an all-star list of collaborators, a great artistic vision, a measure of creative control, and (it seems) people backing him who will support that vision. Unless that vision is just TOTALLY off, he has the potential to do well.

Before we had an idea of who Blake’s collaborators were, I admit that I thought he might be too “cool” (and I use that term loosely) for mainstream radio. However, looking at this list of producers/songwriters/etc, my thoughts are being shifted a bit. He does have a pop sensibility about him, even with all his eccentricities (is that even a word? lol). It will be interesting to hear these songs… and if MJ’s hearing good stuff about it, I believe her. :)

ETA: Oh, also – “B” is much better than Blakeee. What? Did your “e” get stuck? Backspace too? Gotcha.

  89. I think Blake and Jordin will sell well. I do think there is TONS of selling potential there with Blake, but I’m between Tony’s numbers (200,000-400,000 tops) and Maracaibo’s (platinum x whatever). I think he could go platinum, but there is no guarantee of that. Certainly Clive is setting him up well to succeed, but it wouldn’t be the first time that all the stops have been pulled and the artist couldn’t deliver (Think Mariah Carey ~ Glitter; and she’s an icon). I put his numbers between 500,000 and 1 million. I don’t think he’s going to put out an 80’s album (and to be fair, that type of music is making a BIG comeback; musical trends tend to go on a round over and over again). It will certainly have some influence from that era, but it won’t be as much of a throwback as what Taylor did or what Amy Winehouse is successfully doing right now.

People assumed that Blake would be out of the box, but really, what if he isn’t? He likes to dabble with different sounds, but what Blake is doing now must have some commercial value for Davis to be excited about it. If he was too “esoteric” Davis could have passed him off just like he sorta did Jordin.

  90. gah! read enough and had to skip to the bottom.

If anyone thinks Blake is universally *cute*, he’s not. He’s Basic Beige. What to do? Just add some fringe to the basic beige — distracts visitors for a minute or two.

A step further — he added some fringe (ex: wired rainbow hair, for one) – to get noticed. Still not enough — add some quirky sounds, might work, might not.

NTL, he’s still someone who will always have to add sommething to distract from being “basic beige.”

Jordin’s song — sounds just like kats. Same song, different words although I do agree that she has a better voice than kat.

And Anna, maricaibo — you’re doomed. Fought hard for Taylor and today pretend you never went there. Hopefully Blake will get on the road gigs that Taylor did. House of Blues — hey, is there is a House of Blips?

  91. I, too, think that Jordin sounnds better than Kat, but gawdamighty Tatoo sounds like it could be Katà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s.

The first part of the song sounded just like Kat to me, HS. I think Kat’s voice is good even though I didn’t like her album/singles at all. I’m not so sure Jordin’s voice is all that much better but maybe they’ve learned from Kat’s album.

Blake is beige? :blink_tb: I’m pretty sure that Sarah said he was shibby. :wink1_tb: The thing is, there are tons of women of all ages (and probably some guys too, lol) who find Blake extremely attractive. Just go to TWOP and you’ll see.

I’m not going to speculate too much on record sales. I didn’t have a clue how well Chris D would do. I was just happy as a fan to enjoy his album. I feel the same way about Blake and of course hope he does well.

  92. Fought hard for Taylor and today pretend you never went there. Hopefully Blake will get on the road gigs that Taylor did. House of Blues à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ hey, is there is a House of Blips?

I don’t think you have been listening to some of the people in here. Taylor is a great musician, but you’ve got to remember that they were predicting 5 million in sales for Taylor last year and that obviously didn’t happen. He’s a great performer and does make good music, but his album was not marketable because he wasn’t willing to conform to the current trends out there. Taylor had a ton of people voting for him last year, but when it came time to buying the album, the majority of those voters disappeared because by the time the album came out, it was almost 2 weeks till Christmas and Taylor did not record while on the road and so his album sales suffered because of his release being delayed at least 3 times. I would rather see Blake’s debut pushed back just a little because the album is great and he’s happy with the finished product. As far as “Tattoo”, Jordin’s voice sounds good, but the song itself, I don’t care for it, but there will be some of the tweens that will love it and I wish her only the best.

  93. I don’t find Blake conventionally good looking (I think he’s cute in a goofy sort of way) but I have a 12 year that would disagree. You had to see how crazy some of these young girls were while he AI was on. All the tweens loved him and Jordin. Have you ever looked at a teen magazine? Half the guys in there aren’t exactly supermodels LOL

  94. And Anna, maricaibo à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ youà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢re doomed. Fought hard for Taylor and today pretend you never went there. Hopefully Blake will get on the road gigs that Taylor did. House of Blues à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ hey, is there is a House of Blips?

I am sorry Carolina. But I’ve never pretended I was not a Taylor fan. He is an incredible performer and a great singer.

I just realized that I liked him during the show but soon after his post AI career started, I realized he never was what I thought he would be. I guess I was a temporary fan just because I was confused with whom the real Taylor was.

I will be never fan of the music he likes to do. But I am glad he is happy touring and doing what he loves. I was always honest about it. I think it’s fair to leave the fan bandwagon and move to someone else when you finally realized you should have never been that person’s fan in the first place..

It was just a mistake from my part. And I learned from that.
I really wish him well and I am sad that you think of me that way.

Blake’s style is much more me and that is why I became a blaker in the first place. I remember I said way back when season 6 started that in Blake I found what I didn’t find in Taylor. I really love Blake’s pre AI and original msuic. It’s not only the gel you know Although I must say I love Blake’s blonde spiky hair. Heh.

I hope this clears out my feelings about Blake and Taylor.

  95. In regards to Taylor’s sales – nowadays music publications, people on the street, the media in general are always ready to label an artist a failure because he/she has sold ONLY 500,000 to 700,000 units. That’s utterly ridiculous. That’s a great showing. Not every artist can go #1. It just doesn’t work that way. Many artists have had and will continue to have great careers with those kinds of sales. It’s nothing to be ashamed of. If they tour, better yet. Music has taken a side road thru the years. You no longer have people lining up on Tues drop day waiting to buy a CD. Those days are gone.

  96. Blake isnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t beige. Heà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s cherry blossom. :)

    Good one, pj. :)

Blake may not be Matthew McConaughey or Brad Pitt cute, but he IS cute. My 10 and 15 year old neices LOVE him and were insanely jellus h8r’s when I got to meet him. My 70 year old mom even thinks he’s a cutie and she’s never been one for the tattoo’d up, pierced all over, alt guys.

He may not appeal to EVERYONE, but that doesn’t negate his appeal.

  97. oh wait Sarah — you have teens at 10 and 15 and your 70 year old mom –

ummmmm, would you say that’s, like, a national average to base cuteness on?

If so, average the teens at 12.5 and then add in one at 70 — anyone who thinks Blake is cute is around the age of 41 years.

Blakes core fanbase is menopausal women.

wait, I have to average in Sarah, PJ and Anna — please provide stats! He could be rocking the late 30’s.

  98. For heaven’s sake, I gave you just a few people as an example. I also know girls in their teens, 20’s, 30’s, and 40’s who like him and think he’s cute.

Good grief. Is is that big of a deal? You said he’s not cute, people won’t and don’t consider him as such, and I simply said that I know people who DO think he’s cute.

Do I need to conduct a scientific survey for you?

As I said, he may not appeal to EVERYONE, but that does not negate his appeal. That is pretty much the same with any celebrity. My sister in law is a huge Johnny Depp fan and thinks he’s hot. I don’t agree, but I don’t disregard her opinion or taste just because I don’t think he’s hot. She is the same way with me and Jake Gyllenhaal.

  99. LOL, are people really trying to start an argument about whether or not Blake is cute, of all things? What about that old saying, “Beauty is in the eye of the beholder”??

And, while I, like Sarah, have not conducted a scientific survey of the demographics of Blake’s fanbase, I remember seeing an awful lot of screaming teenagers in Blake’s homecoming video on Top 3 night. Oh look, here it is.

  100. And, while I, like Sarah, have not conducted a scientific survey of the demographics of Blakeà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s fanbase, I remember seeing an awful lot of screaming teenagers in Blakeà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s homecoming video on Top 3 night. Oh look, here it is

Yep. I remember that quite well. Teenage girls love them some Blake.
    Thanks star. :wink1_tb:

  101. Sarah, you don’t have to provide anymore stats but, if you’re going to push cute I can push not cute! I see middlin’, you see STAR! Still doesn’t make me wrong and you right or reversed.

Anyway it eventually all comes down to music. I think Blake has the ability to invent a new sound machine. The need is there, he’ll find the time and maybe something BBBlake magical will happen — he can hide behind his voice and maybe earn royalties — hey, lots of mediocre singers out there! Not to mention a patent. He could be huge.

star and ana — of course beauty is in the eye of the beholder. I say he’s BBB (Basic Beige Blake), you say he’s hot. Until the next one comes along. Happy Hunting!

Heh. I know star. Let’s not waste our time.
