Billboard – Chart Date 08/30/2014

Danny Gokey’s “Hope in Front of Me” tops the Christian Airplay chart this week. “Shatter Me” from AGT’s Lindsey Stirling continues to top the Classical Crossover Album chart for its 16th week. Her digital song with the same name also tops the Classical Digital chart for its 16th week.

As we all know, there are approximately 52,109 Billboard charts. This is a summary of just some of those charts and how the Idols/Voicers/XFactorers/AGTers did on them this week. 3. I won’t be able to post chart updates for the next two weeks. I’ll be on holiday with little technology. :)

  4. Have a great holiday! Don’t worry I can post daily iTunes & Mediabase updates while you’re gone.

  5. That’s what I call a real holiday. A place with no mobile network is called heaven :)

  6. Thanks for all of your work in posting updates so faithfully. Have a great holiday!

  7. Just so we can have a tally:

    – Phillip Phillips, Behind the Light – No. 138 – Its total sales stand at 103,000 after 13 weeks on sale.

Kris Allen’s Horizons is rounded to 4,000.

  8. The article also gives a reason for the +31% rise in Phillip’s sales:

“Phillip Phillips, Behind the Light – No. 138 – Phillip Phillips’ album posts its first gain in seven weeks, rising by 31 percent to 2,000 after sale pricing at Google Play and back-to-school promotions at other retailers. Its total sales stand at 103,000 after 13 weeks on sale.”

  9. – Phillip Phillips, Behind the Light – No. 138 – Phillip Phillips’ album posts its first gain in seven weeks, rising by 31 percent to 2,000 after sale pricing at Google Play and back-to-school promotions at other retailers. Its total sales stand at 103,000 after 13 weeks on sale.

Confirming that P2’s album did not stabilize at 4-5k a few weeks ago after all. That’s not particularly surprising in today’s market, and it implies tour-driven sales at about the level I would have expected from the size of the audiences.

  10. Caleb’s and Kris’ team might want to consider sale pricing, since that often results in boosts in sales.

ETA – also, on a non-Idol related note — ouch for that drop in The Vamps’ ranking. That’s the definition of sales being frontloaded, I guess.

  11. This is their first week, so they sure will do it sooner but it might be too late. what’s the price of their albums ?

  12. Johnson’s is $7.99 in the MP3 version and various prices upward from there in CD. I paid $11.99 to Support My Local Independent Music Retailer who was hosting the M&G.

  13. $7.99 is low for a 10-track album and has always been the official iTunes price for this one.

The floor for pricing a new album and still having the sales count for Soundscan is $3.49, just for reference. This was a new Billboard rule after Amazon discounted Lady Gaga’s Born This Way to 99 cents.

  14. The only touring Phillip has done in the last 2.5 weeks was in Vancouver (a break before he begins heading back on the road). But that’s what he thrives on – to establish himself as a touring musician.

  15. My point was that the 4-5k “stable” sales level bandied about in past weeks was unlikely and in fact didn’t happen. Not a word did I say against the wisdom of touring, which is indeed what he ought to be doing right now.

For reference, 4k was about where Daughtry’s sales on his first album stabilized late in the cycle — in a music market with higher sales across the board, when he had multiple major radio hits. It wasn’t likely that would be the ongoing sales level in today’s market for an album that was less blockbuster.

If touring-related sales were typically running somewhere around 1.5-2k, P2 is doing great in relation to the O.A.R. venue sizes, and we know from mostly good ticket sales levels that the venues were sized appropriately for their joint appeal.

  16. Kris’ album is $10 on amazon (physical cd) and $8.99 (MP3). Not sure what it is on iTunes (when I click on the link it just says purchased, lol) but I think it was $9.99?

Colton’s album is $9.99 on iTunes. I haven’t looked in the last couple days, but it had beem at $11.98 on amazon (for the physical cd). That’s too expensive, IMO.

Dropping these down to $6.99 or $7.99 might give them a slight boost, anyway.

WW sales: @onedirection, Midnight Memories 14,000 (4,094,000 total).

  18. Here’s some numbers for Japan Summer Sonic Festival where Adam and Queen headlined.

Summer Sonic, the biggest music festival in Japan devoted to
international repertoire, was held Aug. 16 and 17 simultaneously in
Tokyo and Osaka. The event has recently seen industry-leading headliners
like Beyonce, Rihanna, Jay Z and Red Hot Chili Peppers, and this year the Arctic Monkeys, Robert Plant and Queen with Adam Lambert hit the stage.

For Summer Sonic this year, 105,000 attended the two days at QVC Field
and Makuhari Messe near Tokyo, and 60,000 came to the Maishima site for
the Osaka edition, for a total of 165,000 people. Billboard estimates
this generated 1.8 billion yen ($17.3 mil) revenue in ticket sales.

  19. Congrats to Danny on the #1. I can’t help but wonder where he’d be now if he started off his career as a Christian artist like he should have. Would he be a Grammy nominee/winner like Mandisa?

  20. Actually, the word stable was banded about, by me, weeks ago, in response to someone who said that the sales were crashing. My response was that for the past few weeks (past few weeks a that time) the numbers were stable, and in line with normal drops. There has been no bandying since we stopped getting numbers for the album.

  21. In order for sales to work, people have to know about the albums, and there has to be a demand for the albums. There are a lot of free songs on Amazon that are from independent and unknown artists, but that doesn’t mean people are taking advantage of the deals, and giving the songs a try.

  22. maybe, but I don’t think there is a significant correlation between having a #1 song and winning a Grammy :)

  23. No wonder why Republic dosen’t care about any “Voice” finalist signed to them….Republic seems to all be about Ariana and Lorde these days……

  24. They really don’t go into a lot of detail, and that tidbit is almost buried in the article. It’s nothing like the articles that used to be written regarding the lowest selling winner, and so far, it looks like it is the only article on the subject.

  25. I’m not sure when he is eligible for any but it will not shock me if Danny does pick up an award nomination for this album or single(s).

His management team is pretty savvy, and has gotten numerous awards nominations/wins for other acts they have, or currently represent, like Natalie Grant and Mary Mary. They also had an act who picked up an R&B Grammy recently.

  26. It’s not lengthy, but it is in the article title lol. And Caleb gets a big ol’ picture to celebrate.

Still any publicity is good publicity?

I don’t feel sorry for him, he’s getting his name out there, he’s selling some albums, he’s presumably got opportunities for performing, private gigs, …

  27. No, not at all. Not exactly what I meant, maybe I should have worded it better. I meant if he started his successful CCM career 5 years earlier, I wonder if he’d be a Grammy-nominated artist by now. I guess what I’m trying to say is, would he be enjoying the same success Mandisa is having. (I’m just blabbing, I have no idea what I’m trying to say. LOL)

  28. the Dove Awards nominees were just announced a couple of weeks ago (the awards show is in early October). Danny wasn’t nominated, although Mandisa and Colton were…

    http://www.doveawards.com/nominees/

It’s possible Danny’s music wasn’t released within the eligibility period? If that’s the case, he would be eligible for the 2015 Dove Awards, which would be announced in August 2015.

  29. Someone I read looked that up, and yes, it seems that the Dove Awards cutoff for this current cycle was too early for Danny’s single or album.

If he builds on this first song’s success to sustain something, perhaps the next time, yes. I tend to go step by step, and though he’s done well this is still just one song in the second album era for him.

Plus no tour yet, though supposedly in September something will be announced for an early 2015 tour (Jan – March) after Gokey baby #2 has arrived.

  30. A couple of other points on this. Danny’s producers are also award winners (Bernie Herms, Keith Thomas). Bernie is with the same management company as Danny (and is Natalie Grant’s husband for a third mgmt tie-in). So if they can push an award for Danny’s music they get double or triple credit lol.

And Danny originally met his manager Mitchell Solarek at the Dove Awards when Danny was presenting or doing that joint number with Mandisa, Reuben and more. Danny was somewhat at loose ends at that point focusing on his charity. Mitch and he apparently hit it off, he signed with Mitch for management shortly thereafter, and they went label-hunting which led after a long process to BMG and where we are today.

  31. Yes, ultimately but article headline strikes me as referring to the show overall. “Billboard 200 Chart Moves: ‘Idol’ Hits New Low”

I suppose one can take it as “Idol” named Caleb Hits New Low but that wouldn’t make sense as he has no history on BBD to be lower than. Or “Idol” [Winners] Hit New Low would work though the singular verb would be wrong.

In the text they go thru the whole series of lower-charting winner album sales in recent seasons. Not just Caleb. Oof.

  32. well again, no way to know. Only a small percentage of artists in any genre ever get nominated for these type of awards. As far as Danny’s producers having been Award winners in the past, that’s nice, but doesn’t really have any impact on whether Danny would be nominated for an award. For example, Kris’ producer on his current album (Charlie Peacock) produced The Civil Wars’ Grammy-winning album Barton Hollow, but it’s still highly unlikely that Kris would be nominated for this album.

  38. Congratulations to Danny Gokey on hitting #1 on the Billboard and Mediabase Christian charts! It is quite an accomplishment for someone who finished 3rd on Idol and is now 5 years out from his season, who switched genres and who doesn’t have a traditional label. I wasn’t sure what would happen with this new album, but I am pleasantly surprised. I wish Danny the best of luck. But it is way too early, IMHO, to speculate about Danny’s possible future success or recognition within the Christian genre. The Christian market is more competitive than many may recognize. Having HIFOM climb to #1 is a good start, but there is just no way to predict where Danny’s career may or may not go. So far, he still has one, and that makes me happy. :-)

  41. It is quite an accomplishment for someone who finished 3rd on Idol

I don’t think that it is. Daughtry finished 4th, but I think that most people knew that he would have an easier time finding commercial success than Taylor Hicks. One is more marketable, and the other was a better reality show contestant. After the show is over, where people finished in the voting doesn’t have anything to do with whether or not they will be successful or find an audience based on their music.

  45. A bunch of concert dates for Phillip’s headlining tour have been posted. It looks like mostly venues in the 2-3K capacity range.

  46. I disagree that it is not an accomplishment. Danny’s last album came out in March 2010 — more than four years ago — and he has been fairly invisible over the past few years. That he has any fanbase left, or managed to find new fans, is quite a feat. People often comment here about how important it is to strike while the iron’s hot and not wait long between the release of albums. Presumably that is because the Idol audience is fickle and moves on quickly to the new flavor of the month, and/or because so few Idols break out of the bubble. So I only partly agree with your statement that “where people finished in the voting doesn’t have anything to do with
whether or not they will be successful or find an audience based on
their music.” In theory, that should be true; in reality, it often is not.

In Danny’s case, I suspect he is still pretty dependent on the Idol connection. That is why I don’t think Daughtry is a good comparison, even though he finished lower in a more distant season. Daughtry has been fairly well accepted in his genre pretty much from the get-go, and has been active fairly continuously ever since. Danny has not.

  47. I didn’t say that going #1 on any chart is not an accomplishment. I’m taking issue with the idea that it’s someone more of an accomplishment because Danny didn’t win AI. American Idol and American Idol fandom size has nothing to do with the accomplishment.

Despite claims to the contrary, Danny has always been a natural fit for the Christian contemporary genre, and it’s the efforts that he’s made to fit into that genre that matter more than where he finished on AI.

You mention Daughtry being accepted, but part of the reason why he was accepted is because he is marketable and believable in his chosen genre. Taylor is not marketable in any mainstream format, and finishing first during what is arguably the most popular season of the show does not change that fact.

  48. Ah, but I didn’t just say that Danny’s #1 single was an accomplishment because he finished third, but also because it’s been five years since he was on Idol (and it’s been more than four years since he released an album), he switched genres, and he doesn’t have a traditional major label to push his songs to radio. Those are a few strikes against him, and frankly, even as a fan, I am surprised that he has done as well as he has (so far).
