Avalon Young Facing 3rd Brain Cancer Surgery: She'll be Awake!

American Idol alum Avalon Young revealed on social media that she is set to undergo her THIRD brain cancer surgery on August 13. And what’s more, she’ll be AWAKE during the procedure.

“can’t believe i’m bout to have an AWAKE surgery on the 13th wow,” she wrote, “let’s do this sh**”

Avalon’s message links to her GoFundMe page, where her family is still raising funds for the singer’s medical costs. So far, the effort has raised over $93,ooo of a $250,000 goal.

“If you would have told me 6 months ago, I would be posting updates on GoFundMe, because my 26 year old daughter would be diagnosed with incurable Brain Cancer, I would have told you that would be ‘horrific’ and completely ‘unthinkable’.” Avalon’s mother writes in a GoFundMe update.

“The doctors will be performing a 3rd Surgery on Friday, August 13th to resection the remaining portion of the tumor, they believe can be removed safely,” she writes. “Unfortunately, Avalon will have to be awake during this procedure, to make sure they are not removing healthy brain tissue. The areas where the tumor is attached to healthy brain tissue, controls her speech and motors skills.”

Avalon’s mom goes on to describe the procedure, and it does sound quite scary: “Avalon will be sedated during the beginning of the surgery, then brought out of sedation to full consciousness, so she can interact with the Surgeon during the procedure. Our Psychologist will be attending and in the operating room with her.”

“You can imagine the severity of Avalon’s anxiety which has been paralyzing,” she writes. “We are working with her team of Doctors to manage her anxiety leading up to the surgery.”

The family continues to struggle with enormous medical costs

Meanwhile, the family struggles with finances. The first Surgery cost $728,000.00 and the 2nd surgery $216,000.00. They are negotiating with all parties, but the health care, without insurance, is still incredibly expensive.

Avalon has already undergone two surgeries.

The first involved removing a peach sized tumor, but the doctors could not get at all of it. The Feb. 26 procedure at UC San Diego Medical Center in La Jolla lasted about 16 hours and kept the singer hospitalized for two days.

The second surgery was an 8 hour surgery performed with lasers on May 27 which removed more of the cancerous tumor in two sections of her front left temporal lobe.

Ahead of the second surgery, the pop hip-hop artist released a single “She Don’t”, and on June 1 she released a full album of songs titled Lush. Avalon tweeted at the time. “the album that i made during brain tumor surgery recovery. life is nuts BUT WE CANT STOP WONT STOP!!! EVER!!!”
