Another Gleekster Not Appreciated by 19

By now, most of you know that the incredibly gifted Amber Riley,   Mercedes on Glee, was scorned by American Idol producers when she auditioned for the show a few years ago. She didn’t make it past the 2nd round audition with the producers.

Now, it turns out that Heather Morris, who plays Glee’s airheaded cheerleader, Brittany, was dumped from So You Think You Can Dance right before the Top 20 a few seasons ago.

After the jump, watch Heather get cut by the judges, while her BFF sails through to the Top 20.

It must have been sad at the time, but I’m sure her tears dried up when she became part of the Glee cast–one of the most talented ensemble casts on television right now. Go Heather.

Thank God for unanswered prayers’ ¦..Im just sayin.

I know what you sayin and I agree!

  2. Wow. Someone at 19 sure knows how to pass by some great talent. Amber has such a beautiful voice and Brittany is perfection with the comedy. Her dancing is quite good, too!

  3. It seems that they’ll have the last laugh or already have! The peeps who’ve been successful off Idol most likely would’ve been so if another opportunity had come their way. I think there are certain people who just have it and those who don’t. Explains why we have no memory of at least 98% of those who’ve had a taste of Idol fame. Colbie Caillat also was turned down by Idol and look where she is now. I know there are quite a few others as well.

  4. I assume you got that answer from the SYTYCDism spoilers

Oh hell…I didn’t even go near those spoilers. Making readers jump through hoops for information isn’t my thing. I figured I’d find out whatever it was I needed to know at TWOP.

ETA: Kirsten found it. Maybe she answered the spoilers. :).

  5. I’d like to think that this means that talent will eventually rise to the top no matter how many times it gets overlooked. But I have a feeling it really illustrates how many fabulous singers and dancers fall through the cracks because they weren’t lucky enough to be who the people in power were looking for that day or that hour or whatever. I really think Amber probably didn’t get through because somebody decided they already had enough black divas and Brittany was one more contemporary blonde when Nigel got more jollies off Allison or Aleksandra or Joy or whoever he was into that year. Ben didn’t last very long, either, although I think he’s been back to help some choreographer.

So if the quota for your type is filled, too bad. And if the producers already have somebody in that slot that they really, really like, they’re definitely not going to add competition for that person.

Yep. Or if they are pushing for a different type to win that year, your toast too.

I love Heather on Glee. She’s got amazing comic timing and some pretty hot dance moves.

  7. AI passed up on Mercedes??? wow… epic fail!! I swear I don’t know how they pick people. It must be luck of the draw.

It’s very much luck of the draw, I think. Plus, these reality competitions are not true OPEN competitions. The producers are casting tv shows and they want diversity to help attract wider audiences.

And look at it this way, AI and SYTYCD auditions were only one opportunity each in the lives of Amber Riley and Heather Morris. The Glee casting call happened to be another. The lesson to be learned for all aspiring entertainers is to not give up when someone says no or doors are slammed in your face. There’s no such thing as an overnight sensation. Even Susan Boyle faced a lot of rejection, only to come back years later to try again, and we all know what happened there.

She cracks me up every week. She really does a great job with her role. That girl is loaded with talent (as is most of the entire Glee cast!).

    Words of wisdom!

  11. The thing to remember is that while Idol and SYTYCD may look like talent competitions they really are just casting a show – it’s the drama they are looking for, not necessarily the top dancer/singer.

Each Idol has one “If I was telling you” type singer – just one – and if there are 3 strong singers of that type two will fall through.

You just keep trying and sometimes the right role comes along. Comedic timing with decent singing and dancing skills is perfect for Glee but not what SYTYCD is looking for.

Heck – they could also have improved their skills – look at how many top 20 in either show were cut one year and made it the next.

  12. Hey ‘“ watch Heather dance Put a Ring on It with Kurt and with Beyonce!

Girl can dance. I had a hard time not watching Kurt in the one from Glee, though. :p

When I looked at that SYT footage, I remembered Ben, but only when I watched the vid. How quickly we forget!
