America’s Got Talent Qualifiers continued with week 2. Instead of three rounds, the live shows will feature a “Qualifiers” round consisting of 55 acts over the course of five weeks, before the big finale.
Only TWO acts will advance on Wednesdays to the final performance episode. An 11th spot will be determined by votes from five wildcards chosen by the judges. Last week, the Top 2 vote getters moved on to the finale. This season there is no Instant Vote, except to determine the 11th finale act at the end of the qualifiers. And the judges do not pick an act to advance, although the official NBC press release claimed they would. Simon Cowell changed his mind, last minute, I suppose.
This week, country music trio Chapel Hart will likely advance to the finale. But which act will join them? That’s not as clear! My favorite acts tonight were Duo Rings and Chapel Hart. The Pack Drumline were impressive as well. They get the most improved from their initial audition award.
And other than that? Eh. Expanding the number of acts going into the live shows does NOT mean more great acts. Also, one advantage of seeing an act several times before the finale as in past seasons–they have the opportunity to build an arc. There are acts that grew on me over time. There’s no mechanism to do that when viewers only see an act perform twice before the finale.
Now, it’s time to vote! Later on Wednesday, we’ll put up a post revealing your results.
