American Idol 2026: Guest Judge Jennifer Hudson relives “Circle of Life” moment with Keyla Richardson
The American Idol Season 24 Top 9 took on the annual Disney theme for a spot in the Top 7 on Monday night (April 29). Season 3 finalist and EGOT winner, Jennifer Hudson returned to Idol as a guest judge and mentor. In a full circle moment, one standout, 29-year-old Pensacola, Florida native, Keyla Richardson, took on “Circle of Life” by Elton John which was one of Jennifer’s signature moments on the show. At the start of rehearsal, the viewers see Keyla enjoying a moment with her son, Drew at Disneyland. Next, during her mentor session, Keyla shares that she is a huge fan of Jennifer. After Keyla shares with Jennifer that she is singing “Circle of Life,” producers pull up the season 3 singer’s stellar performance and both become emotional. She calls the experience a “blueprint” that set her up for the future. Jennifer hopes the song is a “life-changing” performance for Keyla as well.
Keyla starts out the song and the verses seem a bit low, but either way she seems connected to the lyrics, and her voice soars as she hits the chorus. Keyla is a singer who is so consistent, that she seems to always be on vocally. She takes the song to church in the latter half while hitting some very impressive runs. Jennifer can be seen with tears streaming down her face and standing for much of the performance.
Jennifer threw a shoe, a signature move for her. She also tossed shoes to a few others (Jordan McCullough and Kyndal). After the performance, Carrie Underwood remarked, “what they said” as the audience erupted and that’s all she said. Jennifer called the song a “testimony” adding that Keyla performed it as her “testimony.” Jennifer continued her remarks, “I was looking at your baby singing that song, as his mother was singing it, and it takes me back to the first time I took my son […], watching “Circle of Life” […] and to think the full circle of my life that I’m sitting here watching you sing this song, that I hope it does the same for you as it did for me.

Luke Bryan said that he has to avoid looking at Keyla’s son as he too cries like Jennifer when he looks at him. Lionel Richie added, “let the congregation say ‘Amen’.”

Keyla’s performance was a standout as were the other two shoe receiving performers, Jordan McCullough who gave a big vocal on “Colors of the Wind”, and Kyndal Inskeep who sadly went home but went out on a high note with “Butterfly Fly Away.” Hannah Harper also did a solid job on “Almost There.” She, Jordan, and Keyla seem like they could be destined for the Top 3 as they are turning into the most consistent performers remaining. It was great to see Jennifer return home to American Idol. I would be curious if this opens the door for her to return more. It was always questionable given her long history with The Voice.
