Congratulations to Jennifer Hudson! The American Idol season 3 alum and former The Voice coach is now a member of a rare club. She’s an EGOT winner!
The singer/actress and soon to be afternoon talk show host, is a producer on the Broadway musical, A Strange Loop which won Best Musical at the 2022 Tony Awards Sunday night (June 12).
Previously, Jennifer won an acting Oscar for Dreamgirls in 2007; two performing Grammys including best musical theater album for The Color Purple, in 2017, and best R&B album for Jennifer Hudson, in 2009; a Daytime Emmy as executive producer on the VR animated film Baby Yaga.
Now, with A Strange Loop winning a Tony, Jennifer has the final major awards show trophy she needed to join the elite EGOT club, which includes The Voice coach John Legend, Whoopi Goldberg, Andrew Lloyd Webber and more.
So You Think You Can Dance alum and Oscar winner Ariana DeBose hosted Sunday’s Tony Awards. The event took place live from Radio City Music Hall in New York City on Sunday June 16. CBS broadcast the event live.
Jennifer is only the 17 EGOT winner.
A Strange Loop was nominated for 11 awards including best musical, best direction, best lead actor, best featured actor, best featured actress, best original score, best orchestrations and best book, best scenic design, best lighting design and best sound design of a musical. It won Best Musical and Best Book of a Musical. The musical from Michael R. Jackson follows a Black queer man trying to write a musical as he grapples with his identity.
