American Idol Ratings: Wins the Night, Down from Last Year

For fun, I looked up the ratings for S8 and S7 Top 12 performance ep.  Looks like a steady decline, doesn’t it?

Ratings experts say that the onset of Daylight Savings Time means more people are out rather than in watching TV–last year’s Top 12 was a week earlier.  But I have a feeling some peeps may be tuning out of a dull season. We’ll see.

  1. I am so shocked.

This season seems dullsville, at least that’s what I get from the people who are still watching, so not surprised the show is seeing a decline over last year. So continuing the decline of the last two year, it seems. Oh well. Onward and yawnward.

  2. I think the drop in the 18-49 numbers is probably most troubling for Fox. This is apparently the “prized demo”. The drop off is particularly significant compared to Season 7. The Idol audience is aging fast. The contestants who can appeal to the older audience or “cougars” are probably more likely to succeed than those appealing to the so-called “teenyboppers”.

  3. The numbers don’t seem to be a decline from other shows this season though, so I don’t really think people are tuning out. To me less people tuned in from the beginning because of the low quality of last season.

  4. I find it funny that they (contestants and others on the show) have thrown around the “30 million people watch this show” phrase multiple times this season, when the actual number is usually somewhere between 20 and 24 million. Maybe a few years ago…

  5. I am just one person but I can tell you that I finally got around to watching it around midnight last night and the only reason I watched is because I have watched all of the other seasons.

I have never been this bored. Usually there is someone I can’t wait to see what they are going to do – not this year. Even my favorite singer is predictable (although predictably good) and that just doesn’t make for good tv.

I think they were higher beginning of the season, and have been slowly going down since then. At least, IIRC. Though the change in format, added days from last year, has made comparisons difficult. Plus moving the times it was on.

But just what I recall, ratings were higher earlier this season than this for regular shows. And tomorrow will probably be even lower than last night’s were, though we’ll see.

But yeah, from the people I know who watch the show, this season is boring to them, not up to either of the last few seasons. There are people who regularly watch the show, though some more casually than others.

But for whatever reason, lower ratings and again, my not-surprised face makes it appearance again.

  7. Yeah, most of the casual fans I know are not very excited about this season. Last year, everyone I knew who watched the show was getting excited (or angry, lol) about SOMEONE on the show – be it Danny fans, or Adam fans, or Anoop or Matt fans. S7 was a similar situation – lots of David C and A fans, Michael Johns as a hottie, etc. This year, just not the same enthusiasm, I think. Heck, even S6 had the Sanjaya factor ruffling people’s feathers ;-)

Ratings may pick up again toward the end of the season – when we get down to about top 4 or 5, imo. Hopefully Crystal is around then, because she seems to be one of the only favs.

  8. i agree mary102… don’t know if the erosion of viewers can be staunched now in that 18-49 y/o demographic. the last time they had younger viewers tuning in regularly was in s7, and i’d like to think it was because david a had a lot of things going for him that drew them in… they’re trying hard with aaron kelly and katie to bring that demo back, but i don’t think it’s going to be as successful.

  9. Season 5 everyone I knew was watching. Now, almost no one even knows what I’m taking about.I think the how will be cancelled soon.

And their are lower ratings because of no kradison ;) (j/k)

  10. I’ve said it a million times and I’ll say it again. SEASON 7 WAS THE BEST SEASON EVER!!! hands down! Archie, Cookie, and Castro made that season. ahh the memories :D

  11. I’m really not surprised by what I’m seeing here. I started watching season 5 and have been watching ever since with the excpetion the Olympics period on NBC this year and I agree with comments upthread about you either intensely loved or disliked someone from seasons 5-8 and this year, with the exception of Crystal and Siobhan and maybe a couple of others, the show doesn’t have the excitement of previous years and I think if Siobhan and Crystal aren’t in the top 2 or at least one of them isn’t in the top 2, then I’d hate to see what the ratings would look like at that point.

  12. ^^ Well, I meant ratings-wise. They crushed Season 8’s ratings and even more so, S9’s. Even topped Season 6’s finale, reversing the trend. Of course, I do also think they’re talented as heck. Especially live.

Don’t forget to take into account the writers’ strike during Season 7. The strike started early November 2007 and concluded mid February 2008. There was nothing to watch but reality TV and reruns. I really do think that helped the viewership of AI, along with some great contestants. I think the strike got people watching AI because there was nothing else to watch, but when the strike was over they continued to watch because it was a good season.
