American Idol Judge Search May Delay Show Production

With little time to fill the 3rd judges spot after the collapse of producer Dr. Luke’s deal to join the American Idol judges panel, production may be delayed, sources tell The Hollywood Reporter.

Filming was set to begin on Tuesday. Harry Connick Jr. is likely to fill that third spot, next to Jennifer Lopez and Keith Urban, although FOX had hoped to add an industry professional to the mix rather than another celebrity. The network is somewhat cool to the idea of adding Harry, but DON’T want to add another woman to the table, given the bad blood between Mariah Carey and Nicki Minaj last year.

THR’s description of Dr. Luke’s deal gone wrong reads like a total clusterf*ck:

  • Dr. Luke REALLY wanted to become an Idol judge. He pleased with Sony Music CEO Doug Morris to allow him to appear on the show.
  • He wanted on the show so bad, that he offered to give Sony half of his 12 million dollar fee (WHAT? 12 Million??? For a guy who isn’t even famous?)
  • But Morris did not relent because of the exclusive deal Sony competitor Universal Music Group holds with the show to release recordings.
  • FOX had begun negotiations with Dr. Luke, only because agents, CAA had assured them that Dr. Luke’s contract would allow him to take the job. Oops. TPTB are not happy.
