American Idol 2024: AGT alum Quintavious wows the judges with a CeCe Winan’s cover

After an Oscar break, American Idol returns to ABC on Sunday with Auditions 4 episode. Just dropped–a new audition from a singer who might be familiar to some of you.

Quintavious Johnson, a Gospel singer from Franklin, Tennessee made it to the finale in Season 9 of America’s Got Talent in 2014 at the age of 12, where he finished in 5th place. During that finale, he sang with American Idol alum Jennifer Hudson. (Watch it here)

In the new clip, now 21 years old, Quintavious sings “Alabaster Box” by Cece Winans. The vocalist has honed his craft since appearing on AGT. In the performance, he builds an emotional call to heaven, employing runs and a big range and plenty of heartfelt emotion.

“Somebody let him go!” said Lionel.Richie. Katy Perry joked that she may go back to her own religious roots after hearing Quintavious’ performance. “Second baptism for me!” declared Luke Bryan.

“What you gave us today was just inspiring,” said Lionel, adding, “You feel every note. Great performance.”

“You gave us everything in that one song”

“When someone comes in and says I’m a worship singer and that’s my job, we get nervous. They usually check an obvious box.” Katy admitted, “But you gave us everything in that one song, which is fantastic. IT was a whole healing, it was a whole baptism for everyone.”

“There’s a realness to you, and a rawness,” Luke added, “And a story is in that voice.”

As the singer’s family waited anxiously outside the audition room with host Ryan Seacrest, the judges all gave Quintavious three yeses, sending him on to the Hollywood Round.

American Idol airs on ABC Sundays at 8 pm ET/PT and streaming next day on Hulu. Check out our schedule. Monday shows begin April 1!
