American Idol 9 – Hollywood Round Pt 2 – Recap

There was a pile of off-key singing and no real standouts tonight as the American Idol 9 Hollywood Group rounds unfolded. And even the drama seemed to be somewhat drummed-up.  I mean Mary Powers? She’s no Tatiana Del Toro!

LA's Next Great Stage Star II ...
LA's Next Great Stage Star II Finale

Actually, the real drama tonight was Michael Lynche talking his wife through labor on his iPhone hours before he took the stage with his group, Team Awesome (who, unfortunately, weren’t all that awesome).

And did Kara DioGuardi tell Katie Stevens she could be the potential winner?  Poor Katie. The judges may be setting her up as the sacrificial early front-runner…  Move over, David Archuleta and Danny Gokey!

Live blog and Videos after the JUMP…

Part 2 of the Hollywood Rounds tonight features the remaining contestants competing in groups. Group rounds = Plenty o Drama!

Amidst all the drama of groups coming together and falling apart, Michael “Big Mike” Lynch’s wife is having her baby.

Mary Powers is the boss of her group the Dreamers! Lucky Mary–she gets the villain edit this year. The group considers ditching the last two girls to join the group. Sole male, Alex Lambert is a little uncomfortable in a group of all girls. Mary is alternately screaming at people (even pissing off music director, Michael Orland) and crying when rival group, Destiny’s Wild, appear to be having some fun.

The Mighty Rangers all auditioned in Denver, Moorea Masa thinks the little closet where she rehearsed with Danny Gokey and Jamar Rogers last year will bring them good luck. But alas, they can’t get their act together–vocal coach Byrd, exasperated, basically tells the group they are clueless.

And 15 minutes in, and still no singing…

Big Mike talks his wife through labor on the phone, she delivers a baby girl, an Idol camera crew with her in the hospital room. (!)

FaithCharity Vance, Ashley Rodriguez, Michelle Dellamore (was in Idol commerical, “Michelle”), – “Irreplaceable” by Beyonce – Ellen delivers the good news: they’re all through to the next round – VIDEO

Team AwesomeMichael Lynche, Seth Rollins (has child with autism), Tim Urban, Michael Castro – “Get Ready” by the Temptations – That was rough. Seth Rollins and Michael Castro (brother of Season7 Idol, Jason Castro) are eliminated.  VIDEO1 VIDEO2

NeopolitanLiz Rooney, Paige Miles, Jessica Cunningham, Thaddeus Johnson – “Bad Romance” By Lady Gaga – Simon and Ellen like it. All 4 advance.

The Destiny’s Wild peeps believe Neopolitan stole all their moves… – VIDEO

Destiny’s WildTodrick Hall (may have scammed kiddies), Theri, Jareb Liewer, Siobhan Magnus – “Bad Romance” by Lady Gaga – Way flashier than Neopolitan. Todrick does a back flip. Ellen calls it weird, and surreal, but they advance anyway.

Montage of contestants all make it through.

The Mighty RangersTori Kelly, Maddie Penrose, Mark Labriola, Kimberly Kerbow, Danny Jones – “Closer” by Ne-Yo – After Mark is cut, he begs the panel to reconsider. Simon tells him groveling is not cool. Kimberly Kerbow and Danny Jones are also cut. – VIDEO

The PhoenixMoorea Masa, Ben Honeycutt, Jeffery Goldford, Jermaine Sellers, Kat Nestel, – Kat quits right before they’re scheduled to perform “Carry On” by Kansas – Moorea forgets the words, off key harmonies and MORE oversinging by Jermaine. Kara compares the performance to “Survivor.” When Moorea whines about having been through a lot, Simon calls it rubbish. Moorea Masa and Ben Honeycutt are eliminated. – VIDEO

Peeps who sing “Sweet Escape” by Gwen Stefani run into a lot of trouble! Why pick such a wordy song, peeps!

Big Dreams – “Sweet Escape” by Gwen Stefani – Amanda Schectman (drama queen), Allen Burton, Matthew Lawrence (Jailbird), Bryce Larson – “It was so horrific” says Simon.  The entire group is eliminated. – VIDEO

Leah Laurenti, Carmen Turner, Kimberly Carver and Dave Pittman (Tourette’s dude) are all eliminated. (All to the tune of Brooke White’s “California Sun”)

Middle CJanelle Wheeler, Jermaine Purifory, Casey James (shirtless guy) – “Closer” by Ne-Yo

Three men and a babyAndrew Garcia, Katie Stevens, J.B. Ahfua – “No One” by Alicia Keys – VIDEO

The DreamersMargo May, Hope Johnson, Mary Powers, Alex Lambert, Erin Hundley – “Dreams” by Fleetwood Mac – The performance is such a trainwreck, that Kara remarks, “It’s like the dream died somewhere on that stage.” Margo May and Erin Hundley are eliminated. The rest of the group goes through, included Season 9 group villain, Mary Powers. – VIDEO

71 make it through to the next round.

John Park, Haeley Vaughn, Angela Martin, Tasha Leighton, Tyler Grady, Katelynn Epperly, Lloyd Thomas, Kia Johnson and Christian Spear make it to the next round. Kara tells Katie Stevens she could be the potential winner.

  1. They only have an hour – I hope it’s substantial and not a wasted one on stupid crying fits.

  2. If every restraunt in northern va is closed then I’ll watch this live! If 1 is actually open then I’ll watch it tomorrow.

Anyway I flove the group round.bi$&h fights galore! Drama! Tears! Yay!

  3. I hope we get more singing this year than last year.

I can’t remember what happens between the group round and the chair episode. What will they do for 2 hours next Tuesday? Are there more individual rounds? Is that when they sing with the band?

  4. Happy Bday Luv!

I’m looking forward to tonight, but yeah 1 hr. for group rounds seems short.

  5. Happy (late?) 13th, luv! Wow, when you were born I was in 1st grade. Damn.

I preferred the Season 7 format without the group rounds, I might watch a few performances tonight. I have 2 papers to do though.

  6. I’ll be here (EVERYTHING is closed):)

    thnx janmasta and cookcricket :)

damn this is off-topic but I haven’t done my homework for like 2 weeks becuz we haven’t had school.oh wellill do it eventually …(I have at least 4 days :))

  7. Happy Birthday, luv! You’re officially a teenager now, and probably in the same grade as my daughter!!!

P.S. You might want to get to that overdue HW!!!! :-)

  8. What will they do for 2 hours next Tuesday? Are there more individual rounds? Is that when they sing with the band?

Yes they sing with the band. But last year there was also an episode at the “judges mansion,” which had the sing-offs, maybe that will be part of the 2-hr show.

  9. I can’t remember what happens between the group round and the chair episode. What will they do for 2 hours next Tuesday? Are there more individual rounds? Is that when they sing with the band?

My memory is failing me, but I remember more individual performances (yes, one with the band – if they choose – along with background singers) as well as being put into rooms and told which rooms make it through to the chairs (and which don’t). Probably lots of drama and more backstory too. UGH – can’t wait for the Top 24!

  10. I love that “Bad Romance” is one of the group songs! It’s usually all oldies.

  11. You know these kids really are so talented to pull these groups together in whatever form in such a short amount of time.

  12. So, Bad Romance isn’t even a song you sing to, I don’t understand, haha. I love it, but why would you pick that, especially if another group already has?

  13. Oh good grief, Simon repeated that empty threat from last season “If you forget the words, you’re going to get kicked out of the competition.” Ridiculous. It’s not an official rule, it’s just something he made up and they didn’t follow it last year, they won’t this year either. Like if Andrew Garcia forgot the words they’d boot him? LMAO.

  14. I forgot how much I don’t like group night. Too much drama.

  15. What’s the point of these groups anyway? I never really got that.

ETA: Cause if it’s to make me dislike that Mary girl, it’s working.

  16. For group night, there is not that much drama, last year was much worse, of course not having a Tatiana or Bikini girl helps to smooth this.

  17. I’m trying to ignore the Mary thing since it seems like they’re editing it to make her appear power hungry. lol

  18. I love that “Bad Romance” is one of the group songs! It’s usually all oldies.

I hate that song so much that I hope it dies a slow painful death on the Billboard charts and that the bloody chaotic mess of noise it is just gets eliminated from the rest of the world. I would’ve rather heard No Boundaries or something by Eminem.

I wonder how the groups did it. To be honest, my hatred of that song kinda overrides any good performance of it ever.

Not too much drama tonight? Well, that’s a good thing. I prefer some good group songs tonight if they HAVE to go with groups.

I kinda wanna see that Irreplaceable performance.

  19. I’m not usually an advocate for violence, but please somebody beat the crap out of Mary.

  20. Why do I feel as if they are trying to avoid showing Michael Castro? Didn’t they invite him back?

  21. Jeez, are we supposed to not like Mary Powers? And where are the cute boys at says shallow me :)?

  22. I really did not like the Bad Romance acapella groups. They seemed pitchy to me. I did not hear what the judges heard.

  23. Ah, the group rounds. Don’t love anyone yet, am I just cranky tonight?

  24. And where are the cute boys at says shallow me :) ?

They just booted Danny! Boo hiss.

A lot of this seems extremely arbitrary and capricious on the judges’ part. Didn’t that chick who forgot the words get put through???

  25. I really did not like the Bad Romance acapella groups. They seemed pitchy to me. I did not hear what the judges heard.

I agree, and I actually like the choice. (Seriously, enough of the older songs on this show. Please. But these were awful)

  26. They’re making Mary seem like a bit$&

I’m so happy bog mike made it thru

and Ellen it wasn’t surreal-it’s a lady gaga song it’s really not that deep

  27. I was thinking, “Where did I hear that song from?”

And then I remembered: Guitar Hero. :)

  28. Why are they cutting all the cute boys? They REALLY want a girl to win this year don’t they?

  29. More focus on booted contestants who we’d focused on. Feels a bit like clean-up… and, hey, here’s Brooke’s “California Song”.

  30. Also wondering why they’re hating on MCastro this time around…they at least let him sing one or twice last season. EVERYONE in his group but him get shown? Weird, haha.

ETA: And yeah, Mary is hateful hateful. Do not want.

ETAx2: Why would you pick that Gwen Stefani song?!

  31. I am one unhappy fan. Where’s my Band of Gold, where’s my White Chocolate?

All these guy — meh. Let me guess Meh is the new Good.

  32. Well, I guess the purpose of the groups is to see how you perform under pressure. Actually pretty good test.

OTOH, some decent singers have the misfortune of being in such a bad group that the don’t stand a chance.

Weren’t the groups more fun in previous seasons?

  33. Aw, bye Ben Honeycutt!

I thought he did better in that group of 4. but yes, the cute guy =P

  34. I’m really steamed about the way Michael Castro was treated!

We didn’t hear him sing, it’s the same for 80% of the other singers in Hollywood week.

  35. Who was the person Kara said could win the show this year? Was it Katie Stevens?

  36. We didn’t hear him sing, it’s the same for 80% of the other singers in Hollywood week.

Yeah, I have someone I’ve been looking for but only maybe caught a glimpse or two.

  37. Who was the person Kara said could win the show this year? Was it Katie Stevens?

Yes I believe it was. It looked that way anyway, the editing could have been deceptive.

Who was the person Kara said could win the show this year? Was it Katie Stevens?

That’s how they made it look to me. Are people going to start hating on her for the preceived pimping, you think? I love something about her voice, though. It’s deeper and warmer than most of the other girls they’ve shown.

  39. Im pretty sure that Tori Kelly wasn’t cut, and Kimberly Kerbow was…

    Tori and Maddie weren’t cut

  40. I only saw the last half hour tonight and I didn’t see anybody who really impressed me. Katie Stevens was pretty good I guess. Casey James was decent for that hot 2 seconds. Janell Wheeler has pitch problems in her lower register. The really short clips can make it really hard to figure out who is performing well. It sounds like the cut wasn’t too harsh if they only went from 94 to 71.

I’m ready to leave the drama behind and get back to some good solos.

  41. I loved yesterday’s episode but tonite just was meh for me. And I will be out of town next week and have plans so will be checking here I guess to see what happens!

  42. blah,, The drama because 2 groups had the same song — the stealing — pffff .. sucky attitude from the ones who considered themselves stolen.
Couldn’t they show more performance instead

there was supposed to be shocking stuff tonight… didn’t see any..

  43. This show was terrible. Last year Matt REALLY stood out. So did Danny and Adam. Last year there were real showstopper moments.

I think the show has run it’s course. Tonight was really bad.

  44. that girl with the funky green glasses from Murray, Utah..what was her name again?

  45. That’s how they made it look to me. Are people going to start hating on her for the preceived pimping, you think?

there is always a group of people who hate the pimped contestants, even if the contestants deserve the praise.

  46. Last year there were real showstopper moments.

I agree. Last year had me excited to see a few contestants and want to vote for them by this point in the show. This year has been soooooooo dull as Ellen put it in the one promo. lol I dunno, maybe it’ll change once the voting rounds begin, but all this is so been there done that.

  47. Tonight’s episode was rather underwhelming. There were no particular standouts for me at all. I also didn’t really like either of the two “Bad Romance” performances; I don’t get why the judges were so impressed.

And there are still a few people who make it to the top 24 that I’m waiting to see perform…

  48. I just found it all… Odd. Weird things they focused on, not enough singing, Mary Powers beyotch edit… Odd.

  49. Useless, reality-tv (even more than usual) episode of the show. Truly insulting to viewers who care about music, talent, and performances. There are reality tv shows on 24-7 where you can find the quality of programming AI broadcast tonight.

Honestly, I don’t care about some guy’s wife having a baby. The “music” did not begin until 20 minutes into the show and then we hardly got any. The judges’ segments were useless.

They must not be trying to gain new viewers. If you tuned in to AI for the first time ever tonight to see what this show was all about, do you think you’d be eager to tune in again?

  50. I think the show has run it’s course. Tonight was really bad.

Sorry I disagree. People hate the group rounds EVERY year, but forget the nathaniel marshall’s and bikini girls the next year and remember the like one group that was good. Last nights show to me proved this years contestants kick last years contestants butts.

  51. I remember really hating group day last year, since we got all of a minute on actual good performances, and almost all the time focused on the bad groups and drama (cough*Tatiana*cough).

So tonight was actually a pretty welcome departure, with so much time spent on good groups (although I thought some weren’t quite as good as the judges did – like the two Bad Romance groups.) In general, though – it seemed pretty strong, and the drama was relatively low-key.

Though, TBH – for all that I hated last year, it definitely elicited a strong reaction from me – which a lot of the early part of S8 did for me. Even if I hated what was happening at times, I definitely felt something strongly about the season and the contestants.

I feel that this season, otoh, is focusing more on talent, but not really bringing the drama or controversy. After all, it’s still a show. So I just kinda “like” everything without feeling too strongly about anything.

Final thought – those groups that chose Closer – very smart choice – that is an excellent song to harmonize on and sound good. And to those groups that chose Sweet Escape – what were they thinking? Singing it solo is hard, but singing it in a group? That’s just a trainwreck waiting to happen.

Still surprised they haven’t shown much of John Park or Tyler – since they both seemed to be two of the more popular people to come out of auditions.

  52. I think the show has run it’s course. Tonight was really bad.

Nothing against you but Season 9 has now something in comon with every other season, people declaring it’s the end of idol, lol.

Last year was even worse, the declarations that the show had jumped the shark lasted well into the finals.

From what I’ve seen, idol fans are the ones who love to hate their show the most.

IA tough that it wasn’t a great show tonight, the drama wasn’t that entertaining and the singing was for the most part mediocre. A little disapointing after last night great performances.

  53. I thought Mike’s baby being born on group day was pretty dramatic. I’m impressed with his stamina. He stayed up all night and into the day talking his wife through the birth, then had to deal with the emotions of becoming a father and not physically being there, THEN go out and give a great group performance. A better performance than a lot of the others, in fact. I can tell you that my husband was almost as worn out as I was after our kids were born, so kudos to Mike for doing it all. In my mind, he earned a spot in the Top 24 for grace under pressure.

I think tonight once again showed how important song choice is. What were the groups thinking who chose the Gwen Stefani song? Did they not hear Kris and Adam trying to sing NoBo last year? Stay away from songs with too many words! I enjoyed hearing the newer songs, but I think the best choices for group songs tend to be older songs that everyone knows the words to. Way easier to learn, then you can spend your time figuring choreography and harmonies, rather than trying to memorize complicated lyrics.

Mary was a turn off, but we didn’t really get a chance to see if her group needed to be pushed, or if she’s a control freak. Todrick Hall’s group was too full of themselves. One group does not own the right to sing a capella, LOL.

Too many of the good singers went by too fast to judge much more, at least until I watch parts of it again. Andrew Garcia is a star, though! Casey’s group was really good too.

  54. Could somebody explain to me what that controversy with Todrick’s group was all about? They were upset because the other group also decided to sing the song a capella? Excuse me, but don’t ALL the groups sing a capella? That thoroughly confused me.

  55. Though, TBH – for all that I hated last year, it definitely elicited a strong reaction from me – which a lot of the early part of S8 did for me. Even if I hated what was happening at times, I definitely felt something strongly about the season and the contestants.

I do agree with you that last year people had much stronger opinions about the contestants, but I think in the long run it is better at this point to not be feeling too strongly about anyone. By the end of last season the vitriol between fan groups had reached epic proportions and soured it for many. I know that I felt dirty after the season because I felt like the show had manipulated me into viewing a widower as a villain. I think stronger reactions will come over time, and I do feel like the show is setting up their best villain yet. With Todrick they have a talented, fascinating, cocky, aggressive, show off who scammed children. People are going to love to hate him this season, and it won’t feel as icky as a John Stevens or someone like that as the villain.

  56. Hmm, I think they’re going to need to lip sync their group performances this year. Even the “good” groups sounded like ass half the time and they put through a couple of borderline tone-deaf people.

I’m still looking forward to the solos and the chairs episode. Maybe there just weren’t any really good groups this year or any batshit crazy people. All I really got out of the show is that I don’t ever want to be in the same singing group with Mary Powers.

  57. Eugh, not a fan of Todrick Hall and ready to kill whoever gave Bad Romance as a song choice to these groups. I’m getting frustrated with that song. Groups suck. I absolutely hated the Destiny’s Wild group performance. Personally, I find Jared really annoying (If you say Ga-Ga-Ooh-La-La again, I will eat your soul) and Todrick…. Well, before I start saying R Rated things, I’ll just say I want him GONE and I never wanna see his stupid diva face EVER AGAIN. The girls were fine IMO.

Wow, I don’t even like being angry or hateful. But those two guys need to go ASAP.

    Easy thoughts, easy thoughts……

The first group performance was decent.

Personally, I find Mary a saint compared to that douche Todrick.

  58. It’s nice to see that Idol is still consistent with the way that they enforce their “rules.” Did anyone else notice that both Didi Benami and Haeley Vaughn forgot the lyrics to The Sweet Escape, but were put through to the next round anyway? It’s Joanna Pacitti all over again. Give me a break! If you’re going to make a point that, if you forget the lyrics to your song, you are going home, you best apply that rule to everyone. No exceptions for the producers’ pre-selected favorites. If you want a prime example of why people think this show is as rigged as a 1950’s game show, there’s one for you.

  59. Well I guess they played right into my thoughts about Mary Powers because I have seen her as pretty high strung from the beginning. I kept trying to figure out what I wasn’t crazy about with her, because I do like her voice, and that was exactly it.

I thought the ‘drama’ from last year was pretty funny and I think that’s why tonight’s ep seemed pretty dull to me in comparison.

OTOH, I was very touched my the whole Michael Lynch baby thing. Very sweet! That guy really has stamina and as CathyMK mentioned, grace under pressure!

  60. Did anyone else notice that both Didi Benami and Haeley Vaughn forgot the lyrics to The Sweet Escape, but were put through to the next round anyway? It’s Joanna Pacitti all over again. Give me a break! If you’re going to make a point that, if you forget the lyrics to your song, you are going home, you best apply that rule to everyone. No exceptions for the producers’ pre-selected favorites. If you want a prime example of why people think this show is as rigged as a 1950’s game show, there’s one for you.

I didn’t notice Didi mess up her lyrics, but Haeley flubbed a couple words. I never took Simon’s “forget the lyrics and your out” rule to mean any words wrong and your gone, but instead if you majorly forget the lyrics you probably won’t be continuing on. Of course they aren’t going to cut the best talent because they missed a couple words, that would just be stupid.

  61. rk349097 they showed Simon spouting that “forget the lyrics, you’re gone” rule in a bumper, but they never showed him saying it in the episode proper, which was weird. Anyway, as I said in an earlier comment, he’s said that before and NEVER enforced it. I don’t even know why the producers allow him to say it, he obviously doesn’t have the authority to enforce such a draconian, unfair rule. ANYONE can forget lyrics, especially in that pressure-cooker atmosphere, it has nothing to do with talent.

  62. Ooh, was that Haeley? Once again, I find her making me smile.

And yeah, they’re obviously not going to cut someone for being talented and making a minor word mistake unless that minor one leads to a few more. If someone can recover well enough, I don’t see a reason why not to let him or her through.

But that seems like it’s exactly it, the “Forget the lyrics” thing raises the pressure and forces you to work harder and is actually a good test of who’s good and who’s bad.

Jermaine oversang that to death and didn’t really hit the note right, but I still thought he was the ONLY one I would’ve put through. That other guy they put through wasn’t really that good. Shame, I liked Ben Honeycutt.

lol @ Ellen saying “Uh oh” after hearing they’d sing Sweet Escape. Agree with her. That’s a NIGHTMARE song.

  63. Hmm. Liked

Siobhan (I liked her quirky outfit for some reason)
    Michael
Janell’s entire group (I’m really lovin’ some Casey James)
    Katie
The first group (Ashley Rodriguez looks so much better with dark hair).
Mary (Am I the only one who DIDN’T want to kill her? Although I do agree she was still too bitchy, but at least she wasn’t an entire smartass like Todrick and that “They stole our idea….” “*singing* They’re going down…”).

Tonight wasn’t very good. A break from last year, thank God, no stupid Tatiana del Toro crap. Although I’m pretty pissed at Todrick, hopefully someone gives him a good kick in the ass so he doesn’t stay a douche.

  64. I was going to say the show gave Todrick the “Pissy Diva Bitch” edit but frankly I don’t think there was any possible way to edit him in a positive way. The guy is an egotistical douchebag. After tonight I can 100% believe he’s the type of guy to rip people off.

  65. Group week seemed to be very interesting. It was mixed bag of hits and misses. I really loved the group Faith (Ashely, Charity and Michelle), I thought they had tight melodies and was the best group overall. I liked Andrew and Katie snippets of their group. Janelle had a very interesting tone when singing “Closer.” Nonetheless, I believe next week we will see the presumed contestants of the top 24 shine.

  66. Why do I feel like I got to see each and every one of the 25 people who got eliminated, but very little of the good singers?

No group blew me away this year. There was a lot of meh going on.

If I had to pick a group I hated the least, it would be Three Men and a Babe (but they lose points for such a stupid name). The group Casey was in wasn’t bad either.

Man, did the groups who pick “The Sweet Escape” ever make a BAD song choice.

Was this the first time we heard Alex Lambert? He’s not bad, but his ability to pick a group sucks. It’s unfortunate Kat Nestel quit because some of her pre-Idol stuff wasn’t terrible either.

And I have a difficult time taking a lecture about how people shouldn’t be complaining. This from a guy who bitches about having sit around for an hour each week and listen to people sing whilst being paid 10s of millions of dollars. How many times have we heard him gripe about how hard that is? Didn’t he have to take a break and go on a walk in the middle of auditions because he had a headache? Dude had a point about what defines a bad experience (especially since the Haiti earthquake had ocured the night before), but wrong person to deliver it.

  67. If you say Ga-Ga-Ooh-La-La again, I will eat your soul)

    lmao -haha you rock!

And I agree with someone who said the Michael lynche bb thing was sweet

anyway thnx 4 all the bday wishes 2day everybody :)

  68. J.B. Ahfua again did a terrific job and I cannot believe he didn’t make the TOP 10 last year. He was one of my choices to make it.

I thought there were several good groups and feel there is more solid talent than last year. I realize edits provide much of the drama. I was also surprised Ben Honeycutt was cut but he would be one to return.

I agree, I did not like “The Sweet Escape.” Again, when choosing a current artist, it is their voice that people remember. One exception to this rule would be Taylor Swift.

I am not a fan of Todrick Hall and it is obvious Idol wants to showcase his talent. There are several guys who deserve more attention!

  69. Why do I feel like I got to see each and every one of the 25 people who got eliminated, but very little of the good singers?

Well, at least it will stop people from saying that Ben was cut because he was too good or some other excuse like that… Who am I kidding, even after his meltdown tonight the fans will still say that he was cut because he was a “threat” lol.
    Same for Justin Williams fans.

  70. Todrick, Mary and Theri got on my nerves tonight. Liz. jessica. Paige. and Thadduis picked the song first. it was the other group who Picked the Song AFTER and then they changed it. Liz kinda reminds me of Allison iraheta. Anyone agree? Jessica and Ashley were Good too. Casey. JB and Janell were really Good. Micheal and Erin shouldent have been cut. they didnt even get to Sing! I loved how there was more singing than drama unlike last season. I hated all that tatiana-nate-kristin and nancy crap. Andrew was good as always too. Tonight was Good :)

  71. Todrick, Mary and Theri got on my nerves tonight. Liz. jessica. Paige. and Thadduis picked the song first. it was the other group who Picked the Song AFTER and then they changed it. 72. Just wanted to point out that “Carry On Wayward Son” is by Kansas. Obviously MJ must not have time to watch “Supernatural,” as it’s on of the classic rock songs that has often been featured on the show!

  73. (If you say Ga-Ga-Ooh-La-La again, I will eat your soul)

LOL! Choosing a Gaga song means you have an awful taste in music.

  74. I’m really steamed about the way Michael Castro was treated!

He’s nothing special and was treated accordingly. He doesn’t get to ride on big brother’s coattails forever.

  75. Hope you enjoyed your special day, luvadamlambert!

Well, slowly but surely we are seeing more of the contestants who are rumored to be in the TOP 24. This is a step in the right direction to making Idol a better show. Again, there are many talented young women.

I am also happy they left out much of the ‘manufactured’ drama. Tonight’s show was good.

  76. This was a horrible episode but still miles above the horrible Hollywood week they had with S8. That was painful and based on last night, there seemed to be more talent across the board this season too.

I agree Grammie Karl, the ‘manufactured drama’ last year was seriously annoying.

  77. Can someone explain to me why Tim Urban is still in this competition? he has been WORSE than a bad karaoke singer so far in Hollywood, yet, he is STILL here? The judges have eliminated two better looking and FAR more talented young men and kept him? He CANNOT sing.

    Sorry, don’t get it.

  78. Am i the ONLY one who thinks Kara’s opinions or so-called predictions are as lame as toilet paper??? Katie the potential winner??? Pleaseeeeee!! I don’t have anything against the sweet 16 yr old but in the group of girls we do see alot more talent than her!

Kara just pisses me off sometimes with her “i-know-what-i’m-talking-about” attitude when actually she is clueless.

  79. Kara’s predictions are the kiss of death. Remember she said after Bank Robber Guy’s audition that he would make Top 12? Katie Stevens should tell her to shut the eff up.

Mary Powers is Omarosa. Except Omarosa had better hair. But the other girls in the group annoyed me too. Don’t whine to the cameras. Tell her to shut the eff up.

I wanted to hear Crystal Bowersox again. She’s great, even if she has Elliot Yamin’s pre-makeover teeth. I think I like her even better than Ashley R., Didi and Janell.

Haely is adorable but she’s gonna have Paris Bennett crash and burn syndrome. She’d be better off not making it and trying again in a year or two. Her voice gets warbly.

I don’t mind Todrick Hall so much. The back flip was impressive.

I didn’t want to like Big Mike because the baby back story was so overdone (filming the wife’s labor? really?), but he’s actually a very good singer.

After a marginal audition (even with the strip tease), Casey James is growing on me.

  80. I always forget how much I hate group night until it’s here again. Every season they focus on the drama more than the good performances. Last year it was Tatiana and Bikini Girl which was a joke. At least this year there weren’t any acts like them or Norman.

I was disappointed not to (or barely) see some of the standouts from the night before. I assume they all got through but don’t know. There were a few groups early on that I was surprised got through so easily.

I guess this is showing my age but Mary reminds me of Stockard Channing’s character in Grease. :)

  81. The Mighty Rangers all auditioned in Denver, Moorea Masa thinks the little closet where she rehearsed with Danny Gokey and Jamar Rogers last year will bring them good luck. And 15 minutes in, and still no singing…

I think Moorea got a little big for her britches. Last year she had the good fortune to be in a group with Jamar Rogers who obviously knew how to arrange harmonies. This year, she’s preaching “harmonies” to her group and she can’t even stay in pitch.

Middle C – Janelle Wheeler, Jermaine Purifory, Casey James – “Closer” by Ne-Yo

Three men and a baby – Andrew Garcia, Katie Stevens, J.B. Ahfua – “No One” by Alicia Keys

Both of this groups were very good from what they showed. Having said that, I didn’t think Janelle or Katie Stevens were all that, not to say they’re bad but the hype is already over the top especially for Katie. I liked Jermaine an Casey from “Middle C”, and Andrew and J.B. from
“Three men and a Baby” (love the group name!).

MJ’s right about Mary Powers getting the villain edit, but I have to say I went back and forth between irritation and sympathy with her.

I didn’t like Neopolitan or Destiny’s Wild probably because that Lady Gaga song annoys me. Am I the only one who thought Sioban Magnus makes ugly faces when she sings? Her bring pink tongue and her W-I-D-E O-P-E-N M-O-U-T-H was very distracting.

Oh and I like Mike Lynche of Team Awesome even if the group fell flat, but I do not get why the judges keep putting Tim Urban through. I thought he was very mediocre… although my daughter said – “Oh he’s CUUUUUTE!” So, maybe that’s why?

All and all, none of the groups stood out in the way that White Chocolate did last season. But on to solos and I look forward to that.

  82. I wonder what Michael Castro’s voice sounds like? You know, if he got some advice on handsoming up his appearance, I bet he’d make it to the semi-finals.

Mary’s pretty intense. I think she’s worse than Tatiana Del Toro. Tatiana was a drama queen, acting most of the time. Mary thinks she’s the boss and is a control freak.

Both times we’ve heard Tim Urban sing I haven’t been impressed at all. I wonder why they’ve been putting him through?

  83. Oh–and telling Katie that she could win it is ridiculous at this stage. She does seem like a talented singer but there are about 10 others who also seem very, very talented and interesting. I think that they are pushing Andrew Garcia and Michael Lynch onto us quite hard.

  84. I noticed most of the folks I liked from round 1 weren’t even featured on group night. We didn’t even get to see Castro sing in his group. I do like that we’re not being hit over the head over and over and over again by any one contestant’s backstory (maybe a bit w/ the baby, but not like they did w/ Danny’s wife). I am surprised that so few were eliminated by group day. They went from, what, 95 to 71? And now they have to cut to 24? Seems like they would have gone from 95 to 60 or so…

  85. They went from, what, 95 to 71? And now they have to cut to 24? Seems like they would have gone from 95 to 60 or so…

They’ll cut from 71 to 50, and then in the Green Mile episode, from 50 to 24.

  86. I was surprised by how underwhelmed I was with the actual singing last night. Only a few people really stood out, and no really great groups to me. Even the “drama’ was bleh. Oh well. Hopefully the last solo round will give us some real standout performances.

I guess this is showing my age but Mary reminds me of Stockard Channing’s character in Grease.

Woah I didn’t even think about that! You are right!!! :) Hmm I guess it shows my age too ROFL!

  88. I like Tim Urban, Casey James, and Andrew. And several of the women but I don’t know their names. But I haven’t been blown away by one person yet. We’ve only seen brief glimpses of them so far, I can’t wait until the top 24 start performing and we can get a real idea of them.

  89. They’ll cut from 71 to 50, and then in the Green Mile episode, from 50 to 24.

Well, it’ll be more high-stakes next week this year than it was last year. With top 36, it seemed that you had better odds to make it through, at least to that level (of course, the 3 group nights that followed were a different matter). With only 24 making it through this year, it means your chances are worse going into next week.

I still wonder why Mary Powers chose to dress like a librarian for her group number.

LMAO! I made a comment yesterday that she was wearing a business suit. Total WTF with that fashion choice. Yet another reason why I can’t completely take her seriously. Her attitude last night was really bad, not very “Top 24” material, imo, though TPTB love to put at least one rocker chick through each year (like Allison, Carly, and Gina), so I think that’s pretty much the main reason she’s still around, and could easily make top 24, imo. Still, though – I get this sense that she’s just too much of a rocker wannabe, rather than the real thing.

  90. Hmm, I think they’re going to need to lip sync their group performances this year. Even the “good” groups sounded like ass half the time and they put through a couple of borderline tone-deaf people.

LOL – I thought some of those groups were way over-praised by the judges – the two Bad Romance ones, for instance – a lot of weirdness going on vocally there – and terrible harmonization. The groups that chose Closer did a good job – and that was a very smart song choice imo. Sweet Escape was a total WTF song choice for me.

  91. It’s nice to see that Idol is still consistent with the way that they enforce their “rules.” Did anyone else notice that both Didi Benami and Haeley Vaughn forgot the lyrics to The Sweet Escape, but were put through to the next round anyway?

Simon has zero credibility anymore when it comes to enforcing the “you forget the words, you’re out” mantra – after that trainwreck performance last year from Stephen Fowler when he completely gave up in the middle of his song, plus Joanna of course, and then both made it through.

  92. i was kinda annoyed they didnt show michael castro. he is pretty snarky in his twitter page. check it out http://twitter.com/Michael_Castro

According to google I’m “Spicy” and 59th most popular search. Suck on that idol! http://twitpic.com/12k8kp

    haha. love the dude.

about the show, liked the whole baby scene with michael lynche and even though i tried to fight the sentimental side of me, i still ended tearing when the saw the new born baby.

i was kinda disappointed that they didnt show john park, lacey brown and tyler grady and crystal (??) cos at this point, these four really stood out for me. (and also michael lynche but thats cos of the baby story and the size of his arms)

  93. that girl with the funky green glasses from Murray, Utah..what was her name again?

OMG – the green glasses? She needs to lose those pronto – and I wasn’t impressed with the singing either. Total cut for me just for wearing those glasses. Maybe Danny can hook her up with some stylish ones ;-)

This show was terrible. Last year Matt REALLY stood out. So did Danny and Adam.

I felt the same way in terms of not really disliking a lot of people strongly after last night, but not totally loving or being impressed either. White Chocolate last year was a real standout, and we got amazing, though brief, solos, from Adam (especially) and Danny during the group performances.

I definitely didn’t hear such stellar, star moments in last night’s ep.

  94. I do agree with you that last year people had much stronger opinions about the contestants, but I think in the long run it is better at this point to not be feeling too strongly about anyone.

Well, it wasn’t just the contestants for me, it was the show in general – as in, strong feelings about Kara, having four judges, etc. I feel like this stage last year I just had a stronger reaction to the show – and believe me, I was nowhere near actually loving (or hating) any contestant until further down the road.

But of course, we’ll see how things turn out :-)

  95. They’ll cut from 71 to 50, and then in the Green Mile episode, from 50 to 24.

When do the separate rooms come in? Will that be happening this year?
I tried so hard to not like Michale Lynch because of all the screen time he was getting. But, damn, he is just so likeable! :)
Who chooses that Gwen Stefani song? Seriously, bad song choice to the max! It was funny to watch though.

  96. When do the separate rooms come in? Will that be happening this year?

I think this happens just about every year, so I would expect it to happen again this year too. My guess is the Tuesday night ep. Think that’s where they do both solo performances and the rooms. Then the chairs is all they do in the Wednesday ep (they really streeettttcchhh it out).

  97. I was surprised by how underwhelmed I was with the actual singing last night. Only a few people really stood out, and no really great groups to me. Even the “drama’ was bleh. Oh well. Hopefully the last solo round will give us some real standout performances.

That about sums it up for me. Even the good groups were just aite for me. No stand outs. The early groups who all got through weren’t even that good. No standout harmonies or cool arrangements. I actually thought Destiny’s Wild’s “weird” number was probably the most original/interesting and the only one I remembered (the other group that supposedly copied them was a lot more boring). They also only eliminated 24 people which seems a waste of a day. Boring episode after Tuesday’s good one IMO.

I wasn’t in love with Mary Powers after she did Sober on Tuesday, even though I kinda liked her audition, and now after the villain edit, I’m totally over her. She’s not that good and comes across really inauthentic and poseurish. I remember when I first thought Amanda Overmeyer from Season 7 dressed like a cliched rocker wannabe, but athen everything about her performances, presence, demeanor, and just the laid back way she spoke and carried herself throughout the competition proved me wrong, and that she was just being herself. Mary is the opposite. Everything about her is super-forced. DNW.

  98. poor Mary Powers, the producers must have been quite desperate for a “villain” this season to paint her into such a negative light. yeah, she’s got big mouth and she’s pushy, but whatevers, everyone has an annoying quality about them. and she was right, the two girls who joined did lack energy and they were booted.

I know it lacked drama, but im glad we got to see a lot of the groups perform. is it me, or did it feel like we saw more this year in one hour than we have in previous seasons?

nobody stood out in the group rounds, but maybe that’s because most stood out in Tuesday’s episode. and wed’s episode was just a re-affirmation that these kids are good.

we still have next week’s solo turns…that’s when Matt really stood out last year, as I recall from the commercials. so who knows, they might be saving to highlight other contestants on next week’s episode (i.e. Tyler, John Park, etc).

  99. we still have next week’s solo turns…that’s when Matt really stood out last year, as I recall from the commercials. so who knows, they might be saving to highlight other contestants on next week’s episode (i.e. Tyler, John Park, etc).

Yeah, that’s my thought too. John Park and Tyler, especially, seem to be early favs online, but have gotten nowhere near the screen time of Big Mike, Casey, or Andrew.

Then again, this is why I take all of Hollywood Week with a grain of salt. Matt was definitely the stand out last year, and was soon considered a top front-runner, but he soon stumbled really really badly with that Coldplay song. Once we get into Top 24, then I think it becomes clearer who can stay consistent week after week.

Glad we’re back to Top 24 too – gives us more of a chance to get to know these guys.

  100. I would hate to be in a group with Mary Power. I was sorry she made it through to the next round. I don’t think the producers painted her in a negative light all by themselves, she gave them the material to work with. It wasn’t just editing that made her seem like a pushy b*tch, and made the other contestants hate her.

I liked the girl with the green glasses, so far.

Don’t they do the separate rooms some seasons, and the chairs other seasons? I don’t think they do them both together (but I could be wrong).

I know it lacked drama, but im glad we got to see a lot of the groups perform. is it me, or did it feel like we saw more this year in one hour than we have in previous seasons?

Lacking drama was a good thing. :) They did show more last night, and more of the good singers, more singing in general, but still not enough … wish it was more but soon the real show will start.

  101. Don’t they do the separate rooms some seasons, and the chairs other seasons? I don’t think they do them both together (but I could be wrong).

I think you’re thinking of two different things. Typically, iirc, they do the rooms after the final solos, to whittle down the people from, say, 70 to 48 or something by eliminating entire rooms, and then, the chairs are when they come down to get the final word on whether they made top 24 (or 36) from the judges. That’s what they did last year, I know. But I could be wrong about previous years.

  102. OK, so now I am remembering. They will put those left out of the 71 (after the solos) into 3 or 4 rooms. Then 2 rooms make it to the chair episode. Is that right?

Could be 3 or 2 rooms that make it through to the next round. Last year, 3 rooms were safe (I think for the drama), though I think typically it’s 2 rooms safe, 2 rooms cut.

I wonder what Michael Castro’s voice sounds like?

He has some stuff on iTunes you could listen to. I think he actually has a really interesting and good voice. Stronger and deeper than Jason’s. I was dying to see how he performed in the group to justify getting cut. Guessing the nerves took over.

  106. No one really is standing out to me either, especially in the group round. There’s some I kind of like but I don’t have a clear favorite. and the ones I do like are similar to each other. Usually I have one or two people that I really am interested by this stage. Maybe it’s a good thing to not have a favorite at this stage because it will be interesting to see how the final group develops without being invested in one contestant.

  107. I found a T shirt that Mary Powers could have worn “I’m not BOSSY.
I just have Better IDEAS,” I already gave it to my better half!!!
Yeah, she was edited to play the villan, and those couple of whiny girls
knew next to nothing, and they were getting nowhere. She seemed
desperate to me! They got axed and office clothed Mary survived, so far.
What was with that look? Girl is no fashionista…..desperately needs a
stylist to update both her RR look, and a dressy look IMHO.Gotta GO!

Many more good girls than guys eg, Didi, Janelle, Ashley, Crystle, katelyn, Lacy, and Lilly to name a few,
Guys that stand out for me Jermain Purifoy, Casey, Andrew,Michael,
    and John Park.
Sweet escape…..Baaaad choice…too hard to remember. Most of them
mutilated those lyrics except for one. I think they got thru because of
the 2 girls they really want, and it was so confusing they probably could
not assess them all properly !
I think they put through some very poor singers for early throwaways
    like tim Urban.
Maybe I’ll be less confused about who I really like after the Solos!!
