American Idol 23: Jelly Roll joins the show as first-ever ‘Artist in Residence’
Singer/Songwriter Jelly Roll will appear on the upcoming season of American Idol as a mentor of sorts. He will serve as the show’s first-ever ‘artist in residence.”
ABC/Disney tells Variety the artist will join the show during Hollywood Week episodes, and then will appear throughout the season. His role sounds similar to radio personality Bobby Bones, who appeared on several seasons as an in-house mentor for various rounds.
Jelly Roll has a history with American Idol. Last season, the singer served as a guest mentor and perform during the Top 24 round which took place at the Aulani Resort in Hawai’i.
According to Variety, Jelly Roll will become “a permanent fixture this season and will work closely with the Idol hopefuls, giving them first-hand advice on how to navigate the journey.”
Jelly Roll joins new judge Carrie Underwood and veterans Luke Bryan and Lionel Richie
However, the biggest change for American Idol season 23 (8 on ABC) is Season 4 winner and country star Carrie Underwood joining Luke Bryan and Lionel Richie on the judges panel after the departure of pop singer Katy Perry.
Check out this preview of Jelly Roll meeting up with host Ryan Seacrest to celebrate the singer’s new role on the show.
In it, the two great each other with a hug. “You’re shaping America’s future!” Ryan declares after Jelly Roll makes the big announcement. He adds about how he’ll help the contestants, “I feel like I’m giving them the energy they need. I’m uplifting and trying to get them going.” The excitable singer then throws tiny Ryan over his shoulder and the two make their exit.
It’s worth noting that Hollywood Week took place at the end of last month at the Orpheum Theater in Los Angeles. The contestants who survived Hollywood are headed to Aulani in Hawai’i later this month to tape another round. Presumably, Jelly Roll will be along to help get the contestants ready for their performances. Typically, the Top 24/25/26 round is the first voting round of the season.
The new season of American Idol premieres Sunday, March 9, on ABC (streaming the next day on Hulu). A special preview of the new season will air following the Oscars on Sunday, March 2.
