American Idol 2025: Breanna Nix sings “Jesus Take the Wheel” as the singer’s son sits in Carrie Underwood’s lap
American Idol recently dropped a preview from the show’s premiere episode airing Sunday, March 9. In the below clip, Breanna Nix arrived to audition with her husband Austin, who accompanied her on piano, and her young son Emerson. For her audition, Breanna covered Carrie Underwood’s “Jesus Take The Wheel.”
The 25 year old described herself to Carrie and her fellow judges, Lionel Richie and Luke Bryan as “just a stay at home mom.” Carrie, who held Emerson on her lap while mama sang, replied, “Never say ‘I’m just a stay at home mom’.” She added, “You have the most important job.”
In her video package, the Denton, Texas singer described being a stay at home mom as “chaotic.” But also, “one of the most amazing things that has ever…happened in my life.” She called Emerson a “blessing” that she didn’t know she needed.

Breanna shared that she was overweight her whole life But right after she had her son, she weighed over 315 pounds. At the moment he came into the world, she realized to be the best mom she could be, she had to take care of her health. She decided to lose weight and it led her to a “journey of self love.” The process gave the singer confidence that allowed her to follow her dreams.

Breanna’s son was such a good little lad sitting in Carrie’s lap. “Is she doing good?” Carrie asked him. He nodded his head. On the chorus, she sang in a clear strong, rangy voice, that had Carrie throwing her hands in the air.
Afterward, Carrie teared up. The little boy was so sweet, and the song so pretty, she was overcome. But unlike other early leaks, fans are going to have to wait to see Carrie’s full reaction and whether the judges award a golden ticket to the Hollywood round to her.
“The thing that excites me about American Idol is being able to be a part of somebody’s story,” said Carrie. “People bring their kids in, and I get to snuggle with a kid while watching their mom.”
