American Idol 2023 Polls: Vote for your favorite Top 8 performance, Top 5 singer. Who was robbed?
American Idol 2023 Top 8 performances featured guest judges Alanis Morissette and Ed Sheeran sitting in for Katy Perry and Lionel Richie. The two regular judges were in the United Kingdom performing at Windsor Castle for the Coronation Concert. They did manage to link up with the show via video, and were supposedly watching along. Even King Charles and Queen Camilla stopped by for a visit, which was a pretty big get! (Read our Recap)
But aside from the night’s star power, the Top 8 delivered some of the best performances of the season. Alanis also mentored the the singers as they covered some of her biggest hits. The eight singers were also paired up for duets of Ed Sheeran songs. Duets are often sloppy affairs, but last night, each pairing paid off for the singers.
As a mentor, Alanis helped the vocalists shape their performances, and appeared to listen to their concerns. These mentor clips are so short. I’m not advocating Voice-length mentor sessions, and time constraints came in to play, but too bad they couldn’t have been a little bit longer.
The demise of Warren Peay before the Top 5 was somewhat unexpected. But for the last few weeks, his performances have been solid, but unexceptional, at least compared to his fellow country contestants who manage to change it up and/or improve week to week (Zachariah Smith, Colin Stough).
Next week, a Disney alum Sofia Carson, who is also signed to Hollywood Records will mentor the Top 5 at Disneyland Park. Halle Bailey will perform. The official press release states that the Top 5 will sing Disney classics. But there are probably two performances. It’s Mother’s Day next week, and perhaps another theme will be tied to the holiday.
