Anything can happen on American Idol, and often it does! The Top 5 were a group of talented singers, and it’s not surprising that this week’s results were not entirely predictable (Read our Recap). Although I stopped believing Fritz Hager would win the crown, I felt certain he would be in the finale. He’d probably finish 3rd, but in the finale nonetheless.
Any surprise outcome would have had Leah Marlene beating out HunterGirl for a spot in the finale. Actually, a REAL surprise outcome would have been Nicolina Bozzo beating anyone out for a spot. But I felt confident that Noah Thompson, HunterGirl and Fritz would battle it out for the season 20 win. But remember that Chris Daughtry, favored to win, left in fourth place. So did Tamyra Gray back in the inaugural season.
Sure, Idol nerds can pour over the social media numbers to make sense of the outcome. But sometimes s— happens, randomly. If American Idol still had results shows, giving people 12 hours or so to vote, some outcomes would likely be different. The thing is, too Leah sang for her dang life this week. She delivered the BEST performances of the night. I wouldn’t be surprised if she and Fritz came in within a few percentage points of each other.
Leah looked Gobsmacked, while Fritz couldn’t keep the disappointment off his face. What’s that old ABC Wide World of Sports slogan? The thrill of victory, the agony of defeat. That’s part of the thrill of live singing competitions. Maybe 19 Records/BMG will sign Fritz anyway. He’s a marketable songwriter, singer and performer.
Next week, besides performing original songs, the Top 3 will pick songs from the Bruce Springsteen catalog. Tailor made for Noah, that theme.
