We reported a few weeks ago that the American Idol season 20 Top 24 were headed to the Disney Aulani Resort in Hawaii to tape the semi-final round. Tickets from On Camera audiences have been up for grabs for a few weeks.
American Idol 2022 Will Return to Hawaii to Film Top 24 Round
Now, a press release put out by Aulani reveals that the contestants will “journey to Oahu to hone their craft under the guidance of celebrity mentors as they prepare to showcase their vocal skills during a concert on Aulani Resort’s beach.”

But which celebrities did American Idol tap to mentor the Top 24 contestants? More than likely, American Idol alums will be in Hawaii assisting the semi-finalists.
After in-house mentor Bobby Bones announced that he could not return to American Idol this season, Idol producer Megan Michaels-Wolflick said that he would not be replaced by a single person, but that the show, in the spirit of celebrating its 20th anniversary, would employ former contestants as mentors.
“There’s not anyone to replace Bobby per se, but this year we will be leaning into our amazing American Idol universe alum to help our current Idols along the way in different stages of the competition,” Wolflick said at the Television Critics Association Disney press day last month. “Lots of those familiar faces America has grown to love will be seen throughout the season and we’re really excited to give back.”
Host Ryan Seacrest added, “In terms of the contestants, I want to see everyone of them come back, way back from the beginning. I remember a moment with Clay (Aiken) and Ruben (Studdard), I want to see Carrie (Underwood) again, I love seeing Jennifer Hudson. I can remember standing next to them looking at their faces and reactions in moment s of success and challenge.”

The tapings are scheduled for Monday Feb. 14 and Tues. Feb 15. Tickets are STILL available at OnCameraAudiences.com. Check the website for information on COVID-19 protocols. Audience members must be vaccinated and tested.
American Idol filmed the show’s Showcase round at the resort on an outside stage, for seasons 17 and 18. Shortly after filming the Hawaii Showcase in December 2019 for season 18, the COVID-19 pandemic stopped all TV and movie production. Producers filmed the remaining season remotely from contestant and cast members’ homes.
For the landmark 20th season, the Showcase round filmed in front of a studio audience in Los Angeles immediately after Hollywood Week taped in December. Fifty-nine contestants sang in front of the judges, Lionel Richie, Katy Perry and Luke Bryan. Check out the spoilers HERE. The judges/producers then chose the Top 24 semi-finalists.
