The American Idol Top 40 showcase round concluded last night. And the big twist host Ryan Seacrest promised turned out to be a Top 21, but not for long. Viewers can now vote for either Lauren Mascitti or Grace Leer. The winner of the faceoff will compete in the next round of the competition.
Unfortunately, American Idol had not yet filmed the next round before film and television production shut down due to coronavirus concerns. If the schedule had proceeded as originally planned, the live coast to coast finals would have begun next Sunday. For now, ABC will air clip shows for the next two weeks. While the show so far has provided plenty of backstory and reality drama, there has not been enough singing.
If American Idol is renewed for another season, the reality show should end in Hollywood, with the next round featuring full or close to full performances without annoying voice overs and judges comments. But then, the semi-finals would have finally featured each contestant singing full performances. As it stands now, Idol producers are hoping to finish the season using technology to abide social distancing guidelines. That probably means the judges in remote locations critiquing singers performing in their living rooms. It’s a whole new world.
