AMERICAN IDOL - Music industry legends and all-star judges Luke Bryan, Katy Perry and Lionel Richie, along with Emmy¨-winning producer and host Ryan Seacrest, and multimedia personality and in-house mentor Bobby Bones, were on hand when ABC's "American Idol" kicked off auditions for the upcoming season in search for the next singing sensation in Savannah, Georgia, Monday, Sept. 30, 2019. American Idol premieres on ABC Sunday February 16, and here is your first preview of the new season, including glimpses of the new talent. Right up front, the cast differentiates itself from OTHER talent shows, presumably like The Voice and America’s Got Talent.

“American Idol delivers superstars, because we find raw talent,” says judge Luke Bryan. “We take the American Idol bus to them!” fellow judge Katy Perry chimes in. “We search for you,” says host Ryan Seacrest, “And hopefully we bring you back.” Third judge, Lionel Richie insists, “We’re the only show that brings you serious artists.”  It’s true, American Idol does encourage songwriters and allow them to perform originals throughout the competition. That’s a thing The Voice does not do.

A contestant sings “Have You Ever Seen the Rain,” followed by Luke declaring “I think he might be the biggest star we’ve ever had on American Idol.” Despite that hyperbole, Luke promises to be tougher on contestants. However, Luke says no to a singer, only to have Katy drag the girl out on to the street to allow passersby to decide (wut?). In another segment, Lionel dispenses a little tough love, “I don’t really like your attitude. I don’t think you’re going to make it to Hollywood.”

The judges promise to disagree (I’ll believe it when I see it!). As a hopeful runs screaming down the hall, Lionel remarks, “That woman is possessed.” Obvs, the crazy is back. And then Katy reminds us that it’s “not just what you sound like, it’s about your story.” Cue the sobs! A garbage man auditions. Another artist grew up in the projects and her mother went to jail. Tears and hugs!  “When you see these kids that come from the toughest of backgrounds,” says Luke, “It’s very emotional.” Katy says “We’re here to create the next future superstar.”
