It’s the first night of American Idol 2019 Top 20 All Star duets. Ten contestants performed with celebrity duet partners. At the end of the show, the judges, Lionel Richie, Katy Perry and Luke Bryan advanced SEVEN singer to the Top 14. Tomorrow, the process repeats with the the remaining 10 contestants. American Idol 2019 Recap: Top 14 Results, After All Star Duets 1 (VIDEO)
I actually think celebrities are a little distracting. With the spotlight solely on the contestants, I prefered last week’s Top 20 solo performances. The celebrities are often not a perfect fit for the singers (Kate Barnette and Pat Benatar). Or the duet partner’s star power swallows up and or intimidates the singer (Shawn Robinson and Elle King). I suppose that’s the point–to see which contestants can go toe to toe with a seasoned professional. But is that really fair at this stage of the game? At mid-competition, fans are still getting acquainted with the talent. With the shortened ABC version of the show, the focus needs to be squarely on the contestants. Save the all-star duets for the finale.
Nevertheless, the episode had some great moments. My favorite duets: Madison VanDenburg & Pat Benatar & Neil Giraldo (Madison truly held her own with Pat). Ashley Hess & Jason Mraz (Ashley did her thing with “I’m Yours) and Laci Kaye Booth & Brett Young (Laci’s heartfelt vocal was outstanding. I wish it was not a duet!) I also really enjoyed Laine Hardy & Ellie King (I really dug the funky arrangement of The Weight. Kudos to the bass player!)
