American Idol 14 Top 4 Headed to Hometown Visits, A Top 3 Finale?

American Idol 14 finalist, Nick Fradiani, revealed on his Facebook page last week that the Top 4 will head home for Hometown visits. Click to check out the entry.

Just found out that if I make it one more round on American Idol that I will be traveling back home to CT next week to perform! Let’s get all those votes in to make sure I make it to the Top 4.

In the past, only the Top 3 flew home in a private jet, to be treated to a hero’s welcome by friends and family with FOX cameras trailing behind them. But that was before the results shows were eliminated. In the past, the Top 4 would perform, with the Top 3 announced the next night, after which they immediately left for the visits.

The elimination of the results show means we don’t find out who is eliminated until the following week. The only was to air hometown visits as close to the finale as possible is to include the Top 4. I also can’t imagine that the producers would choose not to air the footage from the contestant who is eliminated that week, after going to the time and expense to film it.

The new format also brings up other questions. The Top 3 will perform the week before the finale, but the results can’t be revealed until the following week. Will all three contestants perform on final performance night too? Could we have a Top 3 this year? These are questions fans have been discussing in comments. Perhaps the elimination will happen at the top of the broadcast, with the remaining two singers battling it out for votes. Or perhaps all three finalists will sing for America’s votes, with the winner declared on the finale the following night. A Top 3 final would be an American Idol first!

What do you think? Would you be up for an American Idol Top 3 finale? Are you looking forward to hometown visits?
