‘American Idol’ recap: Poor, Unfortunate Souls – As we hit the snooze button after a generally lackluster Top 10 Guys night in Vegas, let us go ahead and crown Ryan Seacrest the winner of American Idol. The host’s composure and instantly supportive words in the face of what seemed like an inevitable on-stage meltdown from Charlie Askew will go down in the books. All those history textbooks, with entire chapters about American Idol. For real this time — not that NORAD-like structure in the seemingly always overcast Northridge, Calif. No, this was it. The Top 20 and last stop until America decides the touring 10. Still, some of us found ourselves asking, where’s the sizzle? This was Sin City, after all. Why such doom and gloom in the guys’ song choices? Did someone’s grandparent die? Were they all ceremoniously dumped by their significant others in the same week? Are they feeling lonely? Homesick? “American Idol”: The Top 10 Guys Fly And Cry In Las Vegas – Last night American Idol showcased the ten remaining men in the competition, and for the most part, the singing was middling-to-good. But the performances were largely overshadowed by the judges’ reaction to poor Charlie Askew, who wore an outfit that was straight out of a 1991 Auto Shop III class, complete with lengthy earring made visible by his ponytail, and sang Genesis’s “Mama.” His performance was imperfect, with some mumbled vocals and over-the-top theatrics, but it was markedly better than his effort last week; he wasn’t shaking, and his voice landed more confidently, although his octave leaps paled in comparison to Adam Lambert. – Read more at Popdust
‘American Idol’ Recap: The Guys Are Still In It! – While several singers made strong impressions — namely Burnell Taylor, Lazaro Arbos and vocal powerhouse Curtis Finch, Jr. — what was most memorable about the episode was the uncomfortably bizzare meltdown of Charlie Askew. The outsider who describes himself as “socially awkward” has stood out in the competition since his Baton Rouge audition, with his mismatched style and personality that is perfectly suited for his last name. But on Wednesday his dark, angsty performance of Genesis’ “Mama” — even the song choice was beyond strange — baffled the judges and left them wondering what they’d just seen. – MTV
‘American Idol’ Top 10 Boys: Sorry, Charlie – When quirky, jazz-handy ginger Charlie Askew first appeared on “American Idol” this season, he was depicted as a merry misfit, an adorkable urchin who happily marched to the beat of his own hippy-dippy drum. ‘American Idol’ Recap: Curtis Finch Soars, but Guys Lag on Eve of Top 10 Reveal – There certainly were some bright spots during Wednesday night’s 10-man showdown, but the best came from the same contestants who have impressed week in and week out. And at this point, it’s tough to look at even the frontrunners on the boys side and say, “Yeah, that’s a potential winner,” aside from perhaps one Burnell Taylor. After all, it’s down to the voting stages. ‘American Idol’ men’s semifinal: The recap – Maybe the men have as much talent as the women on American Idol Season 12. But there’s no way they’re going to win a title singing songs like I Believe I Can Fly and It’s Impossible. Just not gonna happen. While several of this season’s female contestants — Angie Miller, Kree Harrison and Candice Glover — already present like fully formed artists, almost all of the 10 semifinalist guys who performed Wednesday have significant flaws that they’ll need to overcome in order to be crowned the new American Idol in May. – Read more at Idol Chatter
‘American Idol’ recap: Two stand tall; one brought low – If anyone had lingering doubts that the male contenders on “American Idol” this season pale in comparison to the women, this week should put them to rest. On Tuesday night, after the top 10 women performed, it seemed like all but two of them would have been solid picks for the top 5, and several already appeared to be strong competitors for the win. The Boys Are Alright: American Idol Top 10 Guys Sing in Vegas – Let’s hope I don’t fall asleep for #idolboys because face it, last night’s Top 10 #idolgirls was a REAL snoozer. While I’m still confused while the American Idol app looks just like a Windows Tablet, maybe I will be motivated to download it tonight.
