It’s Elton John week on American Idol. Not sure why or how the producers came up with that one. There was a rumor floating around on Thursday that this week’s theme would be Elton. TPTB send out a release that announces “Hits of the 80’s”–a theme more in line with what Nigel talked about before Season 10 began–that the Idols would be choosing songs from broader themes so they would never have to step out of their box. Then it turns out the rumor is true–the kids will indeed be singing Elton John songs.
My guess: The producers mapped out a season’s worth of broad themes for the kids, but decided to change midstream when it dawned on them that “never stepping out of the box” equaled “yawnfest”. I heard the release went out in error. Oops. Well enough of that.
We haven’t had an Elton John theme since Season 3, when Elton dropped by to mentor the kids. But there have been tons of Elton John songs sung on the show over the years. At least one of the kids will pick “Don’t Let the Sun Go Down on Me” sung by Justin Guarini, Clay Aiken, Jasmine Trias, Bo Bice, David Archuleta and Jorge Nunez. Whew. You know what? I could do without ever hearing that song again on Idol But I would not count on it.
So, what do you think the Idols should sing this week? Here’s my list after the jump. Warning: I favor Early Elton.
Scott McCreery – “Amoreena” – My favorite song from Elton’s country-ish Tumbleweed Connection
Pia Toscano – “The Bitch is Back” – This would never ever happen, but would be so awesome if it did. Show some personality, Pia!
James Durbin – “Madman Across the Water” – A dramatic song with lots of opportunity to hit those big high notes would be just the thing for James this week.
Lauren Alaina – “Sorry Seems to Be the Hardest Word – Lauren should show off that big ole’ voice with a ballad this week.
Jacob Lusk – “Burn Down the Mission” – Too bad George Huff already killed on “Take Me to the Pilot”! But this, another one of Elton’s gospel ravers, will do.
Paul McDonald – “Mona Lisas and Mad Hatters” – Paul’s vocal tone and vibe would be perfect on this song. Bring your guitar, Paul!
Casey Abrams – “Your Song” or “Daniel” – Calm down. Sing a classic ballad. Remind us that you can sing!
Naima Adedapo – “Saturday Night’s Alright For Fighting” – I’d love to see Naima really rock out.
Haley Reinhart – “Honky Cat” – I’d love to hear Haley go all bluesy on this one. But it wouldn’t fit the sex kitten image she’s been cultivating lately.
Stefano Langone – “Border Song” – Maybe it’s time to break out the piano, Stefano. Sung from the soul, the tune could be a real breakthrough.
Thia Megia – “That’s What Friends are For” – I don’t even know what to pick for Thia. She sings every song the same way. She’ll probably pick something from one of Elton’s musicals.
