The Amazing Race Season 23 Episode 10 Discussion and Recap (UPDATED)

The Final Four continue the race in Indonesia, where they ate cobras, hard-boiled eggs, put on make-up, and roamed tea fields. Read the recap below:

In tonight’s episode, the final four teams continue the race in Indonesia. Their next destination is the King Cobra House, where both members of each team will have to eat part of a cobra.

Leo and Jamal are the first team to depart to the King Cobra House. They both express sadness over their alliance members Ally and Ashley being eliminated in the last leg, but are proud of themselves for being the first team in The Amazing Race history to survive two U-Turns.

Tim and Marie are the second team to depart. After reading the clue, they are worried about how Marie will handle the food challenge. The teams don’t know what they will be eating until they get there, but Marie claims to be a very picky eater. Therefore, she is sure she won’t like whatever it is they will be required to eat.

Jason and Amy are the third team to depart. They express their disappointment in being the only remaining team to yet win a leg of the race. Meanwhile, Nicole and Travis are the last team to depart. They discuss Nicole’s struggle in the last Roadblock, and Nicole explains that Travis tends to treat Nicole like a child or student since he was her supervisor when they first met.

All the teams arrive at the King Cobra House one after the other, except for Tim and Marie. They arrived at the wrong entrance and are walking around the area, unaware they are not in the correct location. The other three teams eat the cobras without too much problems, although no one is particularly enjoying it. Nicole and Travis, on the other hand, say that it tastes just like chicken. In addition, Leo and Jamal decided to tell yet another lie after Jason and Amy asked where Tim and Marie were. Leo and Jamal said they had already finished the task before Jason and Amy arrived.

Leo and Jamal are the first team to finish consuming their cobras. They receive a clue and learn they must proceed to Kawah Domas Crater. But shortly afterwards, Jason and Amy and Nicole and Travis finish eating their cobras and are right behind Leo and Jamal. All three of those teams arrive at the Roadblock while Tim and Marie are still wandering around the wrong entrance of the cobra-eating task. The Roadblock requires a member of each team to hard-boil a basket of eggs in a volcano. Jamal, Jason, and Travis choose to participate.

While the three guys work on boiling their eggs, Tim and Marie finally realize they are in the wrong place and arrive at the correct entrance where they must eat a piece of cobra. Marie is understandably upset, but she and Tim each eat their pieces of cobra. They finish the task and are on their way to the volcano.

Back at the Roadblock, Jason and Travis believe eight minutes was a sufficient amount of time to boil their eggs, so they make their way back to the station where the eggs will be inspected. Jamal chooses to wait another two minutes, confident that that extra time will make a difference. But it doesn’t. All three of them did not boil their eggs long enough and must make their way back to the volcano, allowing Tim and Marie to catch up.

Marie chooses to complete this Roadblock and is on her way to the volcano while the other three guys return after boiling the eggs for twenty minutes this time. Jason and Amy are the first to get the clue to the Detour, followed by Nicole and Travis and Leo and Jamal.

Tim is worried about how Marie will do in this Roadblock. He already saw that the other teams had to redo the task, and he believes how little patience Marie has will hurt them. In addition, Marie has never boiled an egg in her life, and Tim speculates that there’s a chance Marie may even hold the eggs over the water. And he’s right, as there’s a hilarious scene of Marie mistakenly holding her basket of eggs over the water. However, Marie finally figures out that it would be better to put the eggs inside the water. She allows the eggs to sit there for a good amount of time and returns to the station to have the eggs inspected. Tim is beside himself in apprehension, but it turns out he didn’t need to fret. Marie correctly completed the Roadblock on her first attempt, and she and Tim make their way to the Detour.

The Detours for this leg of the race are “Paint Your Partner” and “Turn Over A New Leaf.” Teams can either put make-up on their other teammate as traditional Javanese brides or go search for a single pair of clipping shears in a marked-off area of a vast tea field while dressed as local tea workers. Nicole and Travis, Jason and Amy, and Tim and Marie choose to paint faces, while Leo and Jamal choose to roam the tea fields.

Travis and Tim had to shave in order to put on the make-up, but that was really the only obstacle the teams faced (except for the men expressing annoyance about having to wear make-up). Tim and Marie make up a considerable amount of time after Nicole and Travis struggle in the task. Travis’s face is smudged, putting the married doctors behind yet again. Jason and Amy manage to complete the Detour first, and are the first team to depart for the Pit Stop for this leg of the race: Cimahi Waterfall. Jason and Amy arrive at the mat to greet Phil (while still wearing the make-up) and are Team #1! This is their first time winning a leg. They are rewarded with a trip for two from Travelocity, and they will be going to Cancun, Mexico.

Back at the painting detour, Tim and Marie and Nicole and Travis get their make-up inspected numerous times before they are finally correct. Tim and Marie depart before the doctors, but Nicole and Travis manage to pass them in the drive over to the Pit Stop. But after a bit of slow traffic, Tim and Marie manage to pass them and both teams get out of their taxis pretty much at the same time. It is a footrace to the Pit Stop, resulting in Tim and Marie coming in second, with Nicole and Travis in third.

So what about Leo and Jamal? Well, the two cousins struggled immensely in the tea field. After spending hours looking for the clipping shears, they switched Detours and arrived at the painting Detour while the other three teams were still putting on make-up. Since Leo and Jamal are two men who very unfamiliar with make-up, they have reservations about the task. But the deal breaker was the fact that they would have to shave their beards. They then decided to return to the tea fields to find that hard-to-find pair of clipping shears. After another long search, they finally locate the shears resting atop of a bush (but not before Leo ran into a live cobra lurking in the ground). They receive their clue and are the last team to arrive at the mat to greet Phil. However, it is a non-elimination leg. The two cousins survive and will race in the two-hour finale next week.

Final Results of Episode:

1st place: Jason and Amy

2nd place: Tim and Marie

3rd place: Nicole and Travis

4th place: Leo and Jamal

Who will win The Amazing Race and the $1 million prize in next week’s finale? Weeks ago I thought Nicole and Travis were the team to beat, but they have been struggling a lot the last few legs. So, even though it’s a very cliché statement, I really think all of the remaining teams have a good shot at winning the race. It all comes down to how they perform in the final tasks next week. So, who do you think will win? Are you excited that the season will come to an end next week? Post your thoughts in the comments section below, and join me next week for my final recap of this season of The Amazing Race!
