Adam Lambert Sings With East LA Middle Schoolers

Adam Lambert sings “Whataya Want From Me” with a group of East LA Middle Schoolers today. He dropped by the Belvedere middle school in East LA to perform with kids playing new instruments donated by donorschoose.org.

Adam’s fan-driven charity drive raised thousands of dollars to fun arts education in schools. Check out the fruits of your labor, peeps!

  1. Very sweet and heartwarming!I can imagine the smiles and good feelings they had after it was over. Nice to see Monte with him.

  2. Donors Choose is awesome! :D I’m really happy to have been part of the fundraiser. I’ve been trying to give a little every month. Our schools need all the help they can get.

The video of Adam performing with them is presh! They’re a talented group. :) I’m glad it was filmed so donors can see their $$$ in action.

  3. lol awesome! didnt he raise 300K in total for donorschoose? awesome!

  4. Another reason I just love this guy!! This is just the sweetest video….check out the kid’s bass drum graphics “Little Kids Rock”….they certainly do!!!

Adam and Monte’s “School of Rock”. Great gig guys!!!

  5. Very sweet! Loved the mini-recorder concert in the beginning. You can tell Adam’s really nursing a major cold.

  6. I loved it – loved the kids, loved Adam, loved Monte, loved the teacher!

I loved it – loved the kids, loved Adam, loved Monte, loved the teacher!

You are right bridget!! ….love all around!!

  8. This is what giving back as an atist means. Leave it to Adam to find his own super special way to accomplish this. Just another reason in a long list why everybody loves this guy!!

  9. OK, that was really sweet :). Good job, Adam and all the peeps who donated! I’m a band nerd myself (band all through middle & high school) so I very much appreciate what music can bring to your life!

  10. He never ceases to amaze me. I agree with someone who said he does have a cold but we only know because we know Adam. Still great great job. I think it is great because it is not perfect.

Love the WWFM from the Iheartradio gig.

  11. Yay! Fans using their power for good. But really, great of those kids to have those instruments, and AI via Donorschoose, helped out a lot of kids get some kind of arts program, which are too frequently cut in these economic times.

So good for Donorschoose, Adam, the Adam fans and of course and most of all, good for the kids that get to experience music in a way they might not otherwise have been able.

  12. My new favorite version of WWFM! I’ve already watched this vid multiple times, and not once with dry eyes. I find it very heartwarming and touching — oh yes, the many faces of Adam Lambert….. ;)

  13. Yeah, yeah it’s sweet and I know this makes m a terrible person but i’m green with envy and pissed off(although they deserve him(poor underpriveledged kids)

my opinion from headlines about it being appropriate

Let’s ask Luv, you’re our resident “kid”/teen around here, right?
    Um,WTF?
if they’re middle schoolers penis jokes are not rare, trust me….even among the nerds and geeks…ewww
And no,I don’t think all his live performances are innapropraate for kids.Yes,I FLOVE all of them but think AMA and details cover shoot was innapoproate for kids

Anyhow I was just at 5 below buying stuff for my bday party tomorrow night.(yes,I know my bday was like 2 weeks ago,and I’m dragging it out too long,we were snowed in and this was the first chance I got to have the party) and I looked at the posters and say adam’s RS cover!!!

Of course,I wasn’t allowed to have it but still seeing it made me smile for the first time today

  14. The chat tonight with Adam was awesome!!! Finally some new questions!!!

    Thank you donorschoose!

  15. dcglam…my new favorite WWFM too!!! His voice is amaaaazing. It’s hard to sing like that singing on a stool. So organic…as Adam would say. And no dry eyes from me either.

I have given several times to DonorsChoose and I tell everyone I know about it. Charities these days can be so shadowy. Really..where does your money go? Here you see exactly where it goes. No in-between person. And the letters from the schools are great.

Jjust completed live Interview..It was wonderful. Adam Fan Club coming!!!! mom’s gonna run it!

  16. Adam is so sweet, so generous, so supportive, so positive, so talented. <3

Great to see you dcglam…I agree!! Adam is such a good, good man.

  18. I think the kids were in awe and were all smitten with him!! I woulda been. Watched it again and again.

  19. As if Adam was not already awesome enough….singing like that – changing keys and rhythms – and making it sound good is really really difficult!!!!

  20. What I want to know is how Adam and Monte managed to enter the school building and mosey on down to the music room without causing all kinds of pandemonium throughout the school. Yeah, I think of things like that. ;)

And yes, I so agree, Mainegal. Even though we know Adam can be wild and outrageous at times, we also know that he has a very kind heart and is most definitely a good, good man!

    I’m pathethic

I’m still so mad I still want to murder (ok,not murder) those sweet underpriveledged people

    ………

    God,I sound so heartless

but in my defense,I’ve been dreaming this exact thing would happen in my school so many times since March

    but…I’ll get over it

  24. I keep thinking how wonderful it was for him to do this (obviously) but also that he chose to really dress down for this. I’m probably really over thinking this and I don’t think I can explain what I mean very well. But here goes. We all know how much Adam loves his glam and fashion and likes to play the “Rock Star” when he’s performing. But he chose to go very casual, everyday (especially considering this is a low income school) dressed down etc. To me it’s like they got a visit from Adam the person not Adam the performer, not the glammy, fashion personality/celebrity…if that makes any sense and this way it seems like he presented himself in a way that was much more personal and accessible to these kids. Maybe it was just a coincidence that that’s what he happened to feel like wearing. Who knows.

  25. Singing with those kids was about the sweetest thing ever. And even with off key instruments Adam pulled it out. Thanks for this bright light MJ

  26. Some of my favorite quotes from the interview!

LOL at “Well I got Allison”…..Don’t think Kris was too happy about that…Me either” ;-)

“Kris is mellow that is why I liked rooming with him…..(whisper) Plus he’s cute…. :-) Oh Adam fan those Kradam flames

“What is your drink of choice……All of them”

  27. Oh my effin’ god!!!

I only saw the performance with the donorschoice kids- and nothing else yet- and haven’t read comments yet either- but before I do- I have to say that that was the most hilarious stuff I’ve seen in ages!!!!!
    Hahahahahahahahahahahah!
They were all so cute, really concentrating on their stuff, and Adam was completey thrown off balance by this different arrangement- and the faces he made were simply priceless!!!
Did you see the way he looked at the teacher, near the end- when all of her conducting mixed him up- he looked up and totally directed the next “whataya want from me”s at her!! Or at least that’s how it looked to me! I laughed my butt off.
    It was really sweet!

    Off the see/hear the rest…

  28. Ok- I’m in the middle of listening to the first part of the chat and I just had to stop in the middle to say-
Get the f### out of here Adam Lambert! I just heard “Enter Sadman” by Metallica last night at this ice cream joint and all I could think of is that I know Adam has never really expressed love for Metallica, but that he would totally rock it with this song… I swear it’s true! And now he says he’d love to cover it?!?!?!

    Oh wow…

  29. Not going to lie, Adam performing with these kids got me all misty-eyed. It’s one of the sweetest performances I’ve ever seen. He was so respectful to them. My favorite moment was at the 1:40 mark, when all of the instruments kicked in (and the little boy on the drums hitting the cymbal … d’awww). And how fabulous was Monte, just jammin’ along with everyone, with that little smile on his face. Really great moment for us Adam fans!

  30. Adam with the kids is so cute. WWFM is gorgeous on the new video. The chat is like an intimate conversation, full of win. Adam is just so darn fun!!

  31. awww… I loved that! the kids were so adorable and focused, that was so sweet. I really like Adam’s song and I always turn it up whenever I hear it on the radio in LA. Sounds like they play it there more often than up in norcal where I live. Good for him!

  32. Oh- and I think the “he/she/you” in Fever debate has finally been resolved!
They talked about it, he considered her idea of recording a version with “you”, and after a short silence, he dismissed it!!!

    You go , baby!

That doesn’t mean it will ever actually be a single, but it does mean that he won’t change it.

  33. Besides just loving Adam for doing this kind of visit, and interaction with Middle schoolers (grd 7-9?), I adored how he sounded in a casual visit. even with a couple boo, boo’s he sang so
sweetly along to their accompanying him.
I really got a kick out of how he answered the questions, and I was
so impressed that he treated them as if they have a clue! (which
some of us know they, absolutely, do!)It was so lol for the kid that wants to go shopping…nearly fell off kitchen island stool.hee!

Oh, and mr, Yay for the resolution of the pronoun debate. He dismissed it….thank you Adam for not caveing!!

    Justjude-
    Yeah- yay Adam!
Oh, btw- those weren’t kids asking the questions on the chat- those were fans from ONTD-AI, the fan group that won the “contest” of donating the most for donorschoice over the summer… :-)

  35. Oops!! Yeah, I shouldn’t be so lazy eh….as I didn’t read the middle stuff and zipped right by as I saw the interviews below.
    My very bad!

  36. That chat felt like I was having a conersation with a friend!! So cool!!!!

Yeah for new questions and answers!!

  37. That doesn’t mean it will ever actually be a single, but it does mean that he won’t change it.

Well if he doesn’t change it, it won’t be a single IMO, at least not in America, and especially not if he wants radio play.

Adam with those kids was beyond adorable….and how hard must they have worked to learn WWFM so they could play it for him.

  38. Loved the chat….those were the best questions that have ever been asked of him and he was open and honest. This is man is amazing to me and an inspiration. He spent almost an hour answering questions- beautiful. And let’s not dismiss those “low income, off key” middle school-ers. They were focused and not intimidated in the least!!! Great day.

Not to dis Carrie.. but this reminds me of the Idol Gives Back episode where Carrie hands out mosquito nets all dolled up. She wasn’t dressed up so much as her hair and make up were perfect and she was walking into some very poverty stricken areas. “Which one of these things is not like the other…” Someone should have said something to that girl. She is a sweet thing.. but it just looked odd.

Yeah, I remember that. But, in Carrie’s defense, I have to say that I would be willing to place a pretty large bet that it was producers and managers and such who insisted that she get dolled up like that for the occasion.

According to everything I’ve ever heard, Carrie herself is very much not a glam girl, isn’t much interested in clothes or looks at all, and would be quite pleased not to be dressed up and made up for *any* occasion, let alone something like that situation. I really can’t imagine her putting on that face on purpose. I think this is still the girl who really didn’t enjoy the Idol clothes-shopping sessions, wasn’t interested in spending her glam-yourself-up stipend, and said repeatedly that if it were up to her she’d even perform in her pajamas, lol.

  41. OMG! I just heard the first part of “Whataya Want From Me” while the “Today Show” showed men’s figure skating clips from the Olympics last night! It was a perfect song choice, I just wish we would have heard more of it. Maybe the song will be used more later.

  42. The chat was fantastic. He’s so honest and entertaining and very open. Great questions.

  43. OMG! Can’t believe I chose last night to stay off my computer! I come back to twitter in the morning and find my feed overtaken by everyone’s comments about the chat yesterday! Can’t wait to catch up on it all! So great of Adam to go out and do this!!

OMG! I just heard the first part of “Whataya Want From Me” while the “Today Show” showed men’s figure skating clips from the Olympics last night!

Wow! That’s so cool! I must have just missed it since I was watching the Today Show this morning.

  44. Adam is very conscious of his image and setting, and always seems to match it really well. He did it so well on Idol – matching his outfit to the mood of the song every week.

So, we get a certain look for acoustic sets like the GMA Concert Series, Ford Concert Event, and a very glam, rocker look for full-out concerts like the Kradison one. Same with his other public appearances – on the red carpet he’ll be more creative and surprising, at the fashion show he was very high fashion, etc.

So I wasn’t surprised that he clearly thought of the setting – going to a school to visit kids, and obvs wouldn’t dress like he did for, say, the Kradison Concert (lol).

  45. Oh Adam he just warms my heart, love him. I get to see him on the 27th at Fantasy Springs, if any of you are going please let me know and look me up. I am going by myself now, waaa – first time ever going to a concert by myself so I could use the company!!! The things Adam makes me do, ha

  46. And we also got answers to questions we were all curious about during the season- like about the sunglasses on disco night!! OMG- that was so funny- pages and pages of fans analyzing why Adam wasn’t wearing sunglasses like everyone else (Adam dislikers saying he did it on purpose to stand out, or that the production was pimping him and wanted him to stand out, and Adam fans defending him and saying he might have eye issues, or that it disorients him to wear shades in-doors!) Hahaha! When the answer was so simple: no one informed him that they all decided to wear the sun glasses!
    LMOA!!!

  47. I LOVED that chat with Adam. Kudos to the ontd_ai fans for coming up with some unique, interesting, funny questions! That hour was so entertaining and I laughed out loud many times! :) Love that man!

  48. I watched that chat live and it was absolutely great. I am so envious of Adam’s ability to speak without “eee” or “aaa” or “uhmh” etc. And he is so down to earth and funny!!

  49. I heart the I Heart Radio acoustic version of WWFM. (Loved it when I saw the video first posted, but this cleaned up mix takes it to a new level.) Adam’s vocals are immaculate. And the piano is so cool in it. And then seeing the middle school band…so great. I think they should work with them some more and feature them in a performance somewhere. True test of a great song…when it works in its simplest form.

  50. Yes, chat live was great. Most questions have been answered in the past. Interesting to hear about the jewish issue and music (he was paid!) and not being paid for his magazine stuff as everyone was wondering. Doesn’t eat junk food. Loves his fans over 40! He almost acted irritated that this question was even brought up. Love that.
    Fan club run by mom…yes!!!!!!!
I’ve always wondered if it’s cats or dogs…does he wear fur (hot button issue…maybe I don’t want to hear the answer). Does he really like to fly? About “recycling” his clothes lol. Am sure I’ll think of more questions. These just popped into my head.

  51. His fans did a great job coming up with interesting questions in the chat. I found myself fascinated – even when there was a silence as he read over the questions. LOL He’s so comfortable & relaxed. No hurry just because he’s on camera.

And that IHeart WWFM – OMG all kinds of gorgeous. Who sings like that???

  52. And that IHeart WWFM – OMG all kinds of gorgeous. Who sings like that???

ITA – amazing cover of it! Already have the audio and vid on my ipod – along with 20,000 other versions of WWFM ;-)

  53. ITA – amazing cover of it! Already have the audio and vid on my ipod – along with 20,000 other versions of WWFM ;-)

LOL thanks for admitting that Mary102 now I don’t feel like the only one.

  54. Sh*t!! WWFM passed LLWD on itunes!! Wonder if that’ll stay, or wear out again…

  55. Pretty hypocritical for Adam to use children for PR purposes. Didn’t he say “I’m not a babysitter” after AMA performance. I hope these children got permission from their parents to attend. I would not let my children anywhere close to Adam Lambert.

  56. I hope these children got permission from their parents to attend. I would not let my children anywhere close to Adam Lambert.

Hahahaha that’s too funny. I’m sure the parents are THRILLED that Adam got them their musical instruments. I would be so happy if my children got to meet Adam.

ps – I think it was more like DonorsChoose.org was “using” Adam for PR purposes. They (and all the public school children who benefited) were extremely fortunate that Adam chose to help this cause.

  57. I would not let my children anywhere close to Adam Lambert.

That’s awesome, more room for my 9 yr old! She would completely lose it if she ever met him. She made up her own little attitude walk to “Strut” – she looks so fierce!

It’s great publicity for the organization, which I think is so worth-while and not well known. These kids got stuff they would never have gotten if not for Donorschoose – that’s all that matters.

Pretty hypocritical for Adam to use children for PR purposes. Didn’t he say “I’m not a babysitter” after AMA performance. I hope these children got permission from their parents to attend. I would not let my children anywhere close to Adam Lambert.

Hypocritical how. From the get go he said that he would personally deliver the goods to a classroom. He is honoring his promise. So it is ok for these children to benefit from him and his fans but no way should they be near him. Wow you can do with your children what you wish but I would want mine to emulate the generosity and unselfish nature of Adam. I am sure permission was given I am also sure Adam would not want to be close to your children if it was against your wishes No matter how misguided some would think your reasoning because ultimately their your children and you have to raise them as you see fit and Adam would respect you. IMHO

  59. Saying you’re not a babysitter doesn’t mean that you don’t support kids getting educated in the arts! Adam’s not baby-sitting, he’s representing DonorsChoose.

During the AI summer tour (well before the AMA’s)Adam asked fans who wanted to spend money on HIM to instead consider using their money to help fund arts education projects.

I think those who benefit from others’ generosity simply appreciate the interest and support. Cynicism and mean-spiritedness are kind of a weird luxury for those who aren’t in need.

  60. “Pretty hypocritical for Adam to use children for PR purposes. Didn’t he say “I’m not a babysitter” after AMA performance.”

I don’t think Adam needs to “use children for PR purposes.”
And I totally agree with Bridget.

  61. That was so cool! Those kids must have thrilled – they did a good job – and Adam is a sweetie:)

  62. Hey Guys!!!!!!!!Greetings from the Philippines.I loooooooove Adam .I am so glad he’s doing this wonderful endeavor of helping the less unfortunate but talented kids. I hope he visit us here and rock our islands.

  63. oh man.. i love his stripped WWFM. I just love the way he says ‘Thanks for loving me, cos you are doing it perfectly’. Its amazing and so raw!
