  1. I wish they would exand the promos to the runner ups too. And maybe also just some of the finalists who have done well. I mean I know winning is the thing that all the contestants want to do(well I would hope they want to do) but I liked a lot of the non winners…Carrie, Fantasia, Kelly, and DC are the only winners I really like. But then these promo’s aren’t for me…LOL!

  2. Jae, I disagree with you. My favorites didn’t always win, and of those that did win, they weren’t usually my favorites from the start. The exception is Kelly who I liked from the first moment I saw her and heard her sing.

The meme that winning doesn’t matter is one of the things that has been killing this show along with the elevation of the runner ups at the expense of the winners. I applaud giving those who won their due.

  3. I agree with you TwigLa: When I watched season 8 for example, at first I was a hugh fan of Adam and Danny and wanted one of them to win.And then top 9 is when I feel in love with Kris, and started voting for him. Season 7 at first I wanted David A to win and didn’t even start liking David C until around top 6.

Yep. It appears to be the meme for this year. Winning matters. I think it is partially because they want passionate contestants who keep raising the stakes and passionate viewers who become invested. It may not work, but it is one of the new things they are trying this year.

  5. My god Carrie looks beautiful!

ITA the last thing Idol needs to do is spotlight non-winners. Not to mention can you just see the fanwarring if your favorite non-winner doesnt get pimped while others do? I’ve seen enough on Twitter from fans of the WINNERS who are annoyed some are cut out of certain commercials.

  6. I like the focus on winning matters, I think it will encourage more investment in seeing favorites do well & hopefully win. These ads showing the winners always makes me feel warm & fuzzy even if I didn’t/don’t necessarily love all the individual winners.

And LOL that the ad shows Kris playing guitar on the Idol tour for the last couple of seconds. Weren’t we supposed to pretend guitars don’t exist this year?

  7. JLO is good at giving the “You’re special and I know it” look that Simon always used. There are some really good singers in those two clips. I like yellow shirt girl and girly haired blonde.

  8. I like yelllow tank top girl. Let’s see if she actually makes it to top 10.

  9. Carrie, Fantasia, Kelly, and DC are the only winners I really like. But then these promo’s aren’t for me…LOL!

Just comparing your taste with mine, Jae, really drives home what the commenters here are saying. Everyone has different tastes, and (other than your mention of DC), I can tell my taste is very different from yours. LOL
In fact, the only runner-up I like much at all is Bo Bice. I guess that’s why it’s “safest” to stick with the winners. Everyone would be upset if their favorite runner-up or other finalist wasn’t included! (Even though I would like to see Bo included!) : )

  10. Now that I think about it IIRC there was a promo that ran last year that pimped all the millions of albums, platinum records, grammy awards the show produced and I’m pretty sure Daughtry and JHud were included (showed most winners and Taylor omitted?) and I know many Clay fans were pissed he was left out of the commercial. Anyone remember the one I’m thinking of?

  11. Wow, a few of those auditions shown were REALLY good. I like the girl shown in the first video, the last guy in the first one, and the yellow shirt girl.

  12. The last guy on the first video got me interested but he look more like someone you will see in a comedy than a singer and the girl with the yellow top is really pretty.

  13. The 1st girl of the 2nd video is going far.. i can feel it!

ITA. did you see j-lo giving her that mini-me grin of approval? ;)

  14. It’s weird, but I’m totally looking forward to J-Lo being on the show. Steven, not so much. And Randy, while he grew to be my least favorite (besides Ellen), the familiarity is a good thing. Can’t wait for the season to start!

  15. I don’t understand the passion for the “winning matters” idea, because I think it kind of doesn’t, does it? I mean, cool that they all try to win, but the exposure + talent has helped many non-winners to do very well. What’s not to want about that? And why pretend otherwise? I mean, I don’t care one way or the other who’s in the promos, but I think if they ever tried to make it so winning really mattered, like in sports, that’d really kill it. If a perfectly good singer got no record deal, no tour, etc, just ’cause of a vote, I’d quit watching. It would be too discouraging.
