Justin Timberlake – Can’t Stop the Feeling from Trolls
Justin opened the show with a joyous performance of the catchy tune from the animated film Trolls. A great way to start off a broadcast that would run over 4 hours. Yikes.
Lin-Manuel Miranda, Auli’i Cravalho – How Far I’ll Go from Moana
Hamilton star Lin-Manuel Miranda rapped the intro before young singer Auli’i Cravalho performed the theme song from the animated Disney film Moana. She breathes a huge sigh of relief when finished. Scary for a teen.
John Legend – City of Stars from La La Land
John Legend sang a beautiful rendition of City of Stars from La La Land. The song–music by Justin Hurwitz; lyric by Benj Pasek and Justin Paul–also took home the prize for Best Song. Better luck next time for that EGOT, Lin-Manuel!
In Memoriam – Sara Bareilles – Both Sides Now
Sara Bareilles performed a simple and gorgeous rendition of Joni Mitchell’s timeless tune “Both Sides Now” during the touching In Memoriam clip. First, Jennifer Aniston delivered a little tribute to actor Bill Paxton, who passed away only the day before.
