Ratings Breakdown via Marc Berman
Fox won this third September Wednesday in the overnights care of two-hours of The X Factor. But it is second-place CBS that has the largest bragging rights thanks to the 90-minute season premiere of Survivor: Philippines, which won the 8-9:30 p.m. block with a healthy 7.1 rating/12 share. Comparably, that increased by eight percent from the year-ago fall season opener (6.6/11 on 9/14/11) and six percent from the year-ago telecast (6.7/11 on 9/21/11). And that year-ago telecast translated into 10.46 million viewers and a 3.2 rating/9 share among adults 18-49, according to the Live Plus Same Day results. Year after year, durable Survivor remains an immediately addictive option.

The X Factor on Fox was competitive, with a 6.7/11 from 8-10 p.m. (and a 6.4/10 against Survivor from 8-9:30 p.m.). But compared to one year earlier (8.7/14 on 9/21/11), this was down by 23 percent. As predicted, there was no reason to believe the arrivals of Britney Spears and Demi Lovato would result in a larger audience (which could be a precursor to Mariah Carey, Nicki Minaj and Keith Urban joining American Idol in 2013).

Not surprising with practically no competition. Even though it rose, it still isn’t great news, since it barely had competition.

XF was great last night. They showed a lot of talented singers instead of the joke auditions. I think Tate Stevens may be good for XF since Idol people may tune in with a Country singer in the mix.

  • TheGreatXL

Up is the right direction! Hopefully with buzz about the quality of contestants and such, more people will tune in.

  • elliegrll

It had competition from the Survivor Premiere, which drew more viewers, and was up in comparison to its last season.  The two shows were tied in the demo at 8 pm.

I think that it’s good news that the show didn’t fall.  It’s still down 23% in comparison to last season, but that’s a figure that will only get smaller if the show gets better.

The X Factor isn’t a huge hit, but it’s ratings would have put it in the top 40 shows that aired last season.  I think that Fox would gladly take that.

  • TheGreatXL

The good news is that the first half hour was a 2.9 and it steadily rose all the way to a 4.1, so at least it builds an audience well.

  • SullyD

Very good. The show was fun so hopefully those new people will stick around.

  • mileyfan123

The voice to me doesn’t need massively large ratings to work as a format, because it is more of a game show involving singing. Idol and X Factor are more spectacles, and the whole premise around the shows revolve around having massive audiences. I just don’t think X Factor will be a very viable long term show unless ratings spike a lot. Just like I think once idol starts to fall out of the top 3 or 4 of watched shows it will be a free-fall. Half of the appeal of these shows is that the contestants get a massive audience.

  • girlygirltoo

I’m guessing XF will focus on the “up from last week” rather than the “down from last year” and also emphasize the fact that they won the 18-49 demo.

If you are a Survivor fan, though, that’s good news for them, especially considering how many years it has been on air.

  • girlygirltoo

but it built it against weak competition. if ABC and NBC and CBS put better shows in the 9-10 p.m. block against it, would XF still build viewers? TBD

  • Larc

Looks as if XF definitely isn’t growing toward that 20M+ viewers Simon has predicted for it.  I think the only way XF will ever catch up with AI is for AI’s viewership to shrink drastically.  It could happen, but it’s doubtful any decrease would outpace XF’s.

  • Nasstopher

XF will keep getting better and better as it goes. While The Voice is gonna suffer so bad starting from the week after next, when the battle rounds begin.

  • harvestmoon

The good news is that the first half hour was a 2.9 and it steadily rose all the way to a 4.1, so at least it builds an audience well.

However, that appears to have happened because the people that preferred to watch Survivor or a repeat of The Voice switched over to X Factor when those shows were done.

It’s better than having people tuning out midway through the show, obviously, but attracting other shows’ leftovers is probably not the way XF had hoped to bring in viewers.

I’m glad X-Factor went up That’s the buzz getting some more eyes on it. I didn’t see any stats but twitter seemed to be slammed w/ tweets about X-factor so that should help. I hope it continues to rise.

I’ve been thinking as i’ve watched X-Factor that Demi and Simon seems to be the stand-outs.  Britney is well kind of ho-hum all we get is a lot of facial expressions, don’t see her contributing anything entertainment-wise since the beginning of the show. Now maybe that will change but as of now I wouldn’t renew her contract, she’s not a train wreck she’s just boring. Maybe we’ll see a spark later on I don’t know. For 15 million Britney got them some attention at the beginning of the show in regards to the media but as for drawing viewers not sure if it’s that noticeable or would X-Factor be doing so much worse w/out her really don’t think that’s the case.

Now Demi I’d make sure to get her to come back if she wants more money pay the lady I love her and Simon’s interactions.

Britney has put me to sleep thus far. But I am really enjoying Demi as a judge. For such a young woman, she is doing really well IMO. PS Go country singer…loved him but I guess not enough to remember his name, LOL.

Honestly the X Factor is doing respectable numbers. I am sure FOX is happy for the demos, and young demos. I think Britney Spears will be a one season judge. Shes way to expensive at 15 million. The thing is FOX can keep the X Factor in the fall by making it way more cost effective. Lose the 5 million dollar prize, lower production costs, judges that cost no more than 4-6 million and Simon even taking a paycut. Honestly than FOX would get more revene from it. Demi Lovato is actually surprisingly good here and she only cost 1 million. I think keep Demi/Simon, lose Britney cause shes too expensive here and LA Reid should exit hes dull is the problem. Get two other judges at much cheaper costs. X Factor could be a cost effective show if they made the necessary financial changes.

I think X-Factor will establish itself between 10 million and by the time of the BR on The Voice and Live Shows, both shows will have the same ratings. However, X-Factor will suffer a little bit more with BBT on Thursdays. Just my opinion.

  • http://twitter.com/KatiesUVULA Katie’s Uvula

I am like 80-90% sure this is Britney’s last season and I agree that Demi and Simon definitely should come back to return. I would prefer LA not be there since he looks so weird with his head bopping and hand movements when he likes a contestant but if they constantly change their judges every year, it might not look too good on their part

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_ACMLXLYSSX73RNYQOUZWSO2I4U Enough already!

Can only speak for myself and I find the X Factor boring.   Simon paid Britney millions for what?  She is scarcely animated.   Demi is the bright spot on the panel and she can’t carry the show.   The Voice is a little quirky but after a half hour or so its the same old same old.   Pretty sure Idol won’t bring any more to the table regardless of all the millions they spend.   Meanwhile,   where are most of the contestants/winners of these shows???   That’s the point, why bother, it is definitely not about the talent!  I am just not sure the public cares any longer.

  • Jordana33

I don’t think LA Reid is going anywhere. He’s a big name in the music industry and the CEO of Epic records. He’s the reason Astro, Chris Rene and Marcus Canty got signed so quickly and is probably the most valuable judge once the competition has ended.  He’s not exciting to listen too, but I actually find his facial expressions hilarious.

  • http://twitter.com/shoriagirl Shoriagirl

6% is a laughable “raise”, way to spin the “news”.

  • Jazz_11

Agree! So far there’s one thing Simon’s does better than Fuller/Nigel, is LA Reid, compare to Randy. Well.. silly me comparing Randy Jackson to CEO of Epic records. LOL
