  • Anonymous

it wasn’t a perfect pilot but what it got right was sooo good! It has sooo much potential!

  • Anonymous

I find Katharine McPhee enchanting.  I hope this show is a big success.

I already saw the pilot, but I really enjoyed it.  I hope it gets the ratings to stick around.

    Great start!!!

I watched the pilot on demand over the weekend. It’s very well done. The production values are extremely high and the songs are totally believable (most of the time when these shows come up with “hit original songs” they are anything but) . Granted, they are show tunes so they probably won’t be tearing up pop radio (sorry Betty) , but they are very believable as show tunes.

The writing is good and they have done a great job of setting up the story lines. It’s always hard in a pilot because you have to establish the premise and the characters. They have also done a very good job of building sympathy for both women auditioning for the roles.

Kat is luminescent and the director looks like he will be fun to hate (while also admitting he is good at what he does).

I’m kind of thrown by Debra’s character wanting to adopt. They have a son who looks like he’s ready to go to university and they want to start all over again? Why did they wait so long? I hope they explain that little oddity (or maybe it is just me).

Loved it! Katherine was just perfect. I’m happy for her!

I liked your review. Maybe u should recap Smash for MJ! :-)

Loved the show! Congrats to Kat for landing such a plum role!

i thought this show was excellent. I’m eager to see more.  :)

Very slickly done, but I’m not sure I’ll stay with it because I don’t care about anyone very much — the charaters, that is. I’m sure the actors are fine people…. And, how long are they going to extend this whole storyline about vying for the Marilyn role? That’ll have to be resolved sooner rather than later. I guess one will end up being the understudy.

This show is excellent, I can’t tell you how excited for this first season, and so happy for Katharine. Looking forward to all the original songs from the show!!

I hope Kat McPhee has a huge hit with this.  She took so much heat on Idol.  But she’s proved she is a survivor and definitely has moved away from the AI bubble.

    Kat was fabulous!

    Loved it

call me crazy but I was nervous as heck! lol. I loved the show when I previewed it on iTunes, but I was nervous about how the rest of american would receive it…so I followed comments on twitter the whole hour! lol. I guess being a long-time Idol watcher, I can’t help but hope for post-idol success. I know, it sounds crazy. Well, twitter went crazy over #smash so it’s safe to say it was a hit! I just hope they can keep up the good writing so people won’t lose interest….

The consensus in my family was to turn the channel after 15 minutes, so I don’t know if I would have liked it or not.

  • Anonymous

    I loved it!

  • Niall

Katharine was good but I think Megan Hilty is destined to be the run away star of the show.

  • Anonymous

Megan plays Ivy, right? From what I’ve seen, she’s more interesting than Kat. But Kat really hasn’t had much to do in this episode yet (saying this about halfway through the episode)

ETA – OK, Kat sounded great in that audition scene singing “Beautiful”. I guess she features more prominently in the rest of the episode, then? :)

ETA – Ok, Kat started out the episode pretty bland, but she was really good in the 2nd half of it. So that’s promising. Megan Hilty may have the more interesting character to play, though. At least so far

Love Debra Messing & whoever it is who plays the male half of the writing team. Angelica Huston didn’t have much to do and I hope they make the director part more interesting.

Overall, I like it, but wasn’t blown away. It has potential to be a really fun, interesting show. Although eventually they have to cast the part, so then what happens to the other girl?

  • mysweetevil

So good to see Alex during the baseball number!!

Watching it as I was working, when she started into the song, I had goosebumps immediately, she sounded great.

Her natural brunette beauty reminds me of a young Jaclyn Smith…

Team Kat – for her otherworldly beauty and lovely voice! Megan Hilty is good too though – what else has she done? I’m glad they didn’t set her up to be the villain, which I was a bit worried about based on the promos.

  • Dlynne

I loved it. And it had my full attention. Very few shows grab my full attention. Kat blew me away. I thought she was amazing. I especially loved the bathroom scene before she put on the dress shirt and sang Happy Birthday, Mr. President.

  • http://twitter.com/Trishdish2001 Trish Martin

I agree!  Kat was great in this and also loved that bathroom scene!  Loved it when she told the guy that it “wasn’t going to happen” as in sex I guess.  The look on his face was priceless!!

This is a terrific vehicle for Katherine’s talent.  The casting is good and I do like the plot premise.  Once the casting is completed for “Marilyn”, I imagine there will be another stage production.  I think “Smash” has a good chance for being a success.

  • Anonymous

That was great television; “Glee for grown-ups,” as one review sad.  I never was much of a McPhee fan, and I was not sure that she could carry her part, but she did and I found myself rooting for her character.  As much as I liked the show, I wonder where they are going to take it:  we will need more singers to keep us interested.

  • fuzzywuzzy

I found the show very entertaining and the music/musical numbers are really good.  Kat impressed me, both as an actress and singer and Megan Hilty is excellent.  The rest of the cast is believable and I especially liked the director/choreographer, Derek (Jack Davenport), and Debra’s writing partner, Tom (Christian Borle).  I’ll be watching this show and hope that it does well.

ETA: Christian Borle (Tom) is a Tony-nominated, award winning singer/dancer and Broadway veteran.

He’s pretty entertaining in this ad for eBay. lol

Watched the pilot on demand over the weekend once I knew NBC was doing that. Fun show and I’ve always liked Kat.

    I LOVE THIS SHOW !!!!! FANTASTIC !!!!!

It kept me interested and I am no fan of McPhee. I thought Debra Messing was great. I’m already looking forward to the next episode.

I loved this show.  The opening was great, Kat singing Somewhere Over the Rainbow, I wonder of this was a nod to Idol fans?

    |I hope it does well, I’m looking forward to the next episode.

I wasn’t going to watch but sat too long after The Voice and got pulled in. Actually, my husband and daughter watched with me — a rarity in our house, these days. Everyone liked it. It didn’t knock our socks off like Glee did at the start, but I think we’ll keep watching.

I love the theatre, so I was psyched about “Smash.” The pilot did not disappoint. I was sucked in right from the get-go — when Kat’s character envisioned herself onstage and then the director’s cell phone interrupted her. Kat and Megan both have beautiful voices. Debra Messing was excellent. I look forward to seeing how the story plays out.

Didn’t do much for me. All that switching back and forth between audition and “the stage” was annoying.  I thought the show moved very slowly and there was little “drama”… it was easy to doze off while watching

The show seems well cast though so with time, it may become more interesting.

  • Anonymous

I love Katherine McPhee but only made it 10 minutes into the show without turning it, I found it boring.  She is gorgeous though.  I noticed today on a rock station’s website there is a sexy picture of her and she is their babe of the day.  Couldn’t figure out how to post it here, but it’s 95 WIIL Rock in Chicago, on their home page.

  • julesb2183

    sorry double post

  • julesb2183

anyone know where I can watch the show online?

I thought it was a GREAT show. Something new, totally different than Glee.
The second half was even better!
Kat did an amazing job. BTW I have to say Jack Davenport is HOT and a terrific actor. His role as the director choreographer is perfect.
Also his chemistry with Kat Mcphee is off the charts! Can wait to see what happens with those two.
I am  so happy the show did well, hopefully it will continue an upward trend. It has so much potential.

Loved the show. My only gripe would be nothing in the business works that fast! Its more like the My Fair Lady revamp that Angelica Huston’s character was working on for over two years. The writers have an idea, then a song, then another song and the director of choice just happens to be available and they find not one but two potential stars right off the bat, hah!

But I will have a willing suspension of belief in order to throw my support to this effort. A smart move on NBC’s behalf to place it on Monday night, which is a down night for most theatre folk. Hope it stays there.

And if I were casting the role of Marilyn would go to Megan Hilty by a wide margin, but it looks like SPOILER ALERT she really screws up her chances of getting the job in the promos for the coming episodes. Plus SPOILER ALERT she has already accepted a part in a real Broadway show for next season so she can’t be there for long.
