Surprising Idol fans everywhere, American Idol winner,  Phillip Phillips,  told a radio DJ recently that his debut album would not come out until January or February of 2013, bucking the typical practice of the winner and runner-up  releasing debuts  in time for holiday sales.

Now, in a brief interview with the Atlanta Journal Constitution, Phillip confirms that the album will not be out until early January.

Having just interviewed him a month ago, I didn’t set up a time to talk to him but I did get my picture taken and asked him quickly about his album release. He confirmed it wasn’t coming out until early January instead of the Christmas season. He also feels better, post kidney stone surgery, though isn’t 100%. I joked that he wasn’t quite ready to run a marathon. He isn’t much of an exercise guy anyway, he said. He walks at most. (The virtues of being 21!).

In case you didn’t know, January is a dead zone for album sales. The upside? Phillip will have very little competition, perhaps even hitting the #1 spot on the Billboard 200. Bragging rights! The downside, his first week sales will be scary low. The only hope of decent sales will be for the album to grow some legs and keep selling! Here’s hoping Interscope has a really solid plan in place to promote the heck out of the new record once it drops…

I think that it’s entirely possible for labels to “buy” a Grammy nomination for one of their artists

But if it was that easy, why wouldn’t they all do that and create a bidding war? They all have artists to promote.

And why would Interscope do it for Phil instead of somebody like Bieber who is far more profitable? And why would they do it for “Home” when the artist himself says it doesn’t represent himself? He’s hardly a vocal powerhouse and he wants to be known as a songwriter. Better to try that with something he had a part in writing.

Finally, in a year where artists like fun., Goyte, and Adele had such big hits, I think the AAA slots for the major awards are already locked up (Adele winning AoY last year will disqualify her for some of the awards this year, though. Her songs cannot be nominated for Song OTY, but can be for Record OTY).

“How about everyone take a deep breath & worry a little less about what P2 & Interscope are doing…”

Because … what would we do with our empty lives, if we didn’t have these Idol-business melodramas to dispute to death? heh

Seriously — I can’t speak for others, but I *love* discussing this stuff. Love the way Internet discussions like this have made tv shows so very much more entertaining than they used to be. Now, not only do I get the show but I get the engrossing show follow-up, the explore-it-yourself sequels that are like engaging mystery books. All the pleasures of gossip but with room for some actual intelligent discussion of business, the arts, tv, the future of the music business, the psychology of young wannabes, etc., etc. Where do you ever get that?

And as for what actually happens to Phillip, and Jimmy, and Jessica and all the others — well, that part is clearly for *them* to worry about, not me.

Okay, I’ll can the boards-on-boards conversation. Sorry, mj. Just clarifying that I, for one, am actually not overly invested in Phillip or any of the rest of them. But I *do* love when something unusual happens!

I should have been more specific. I think that labels can “buy” nominations for artists/songs, but clearly those songs must also achieve certain “criteria” whether commercial, general popularity, critical or artistic. Just money alone won’t work, but among a lot of songs that achieve the required criteria, then IMO money (or its equivalent) can be “persuasive” in gaining a nomination.

lol I can’t speak for anyone else, but I NEVER, EVER “worry” about any of these Idols. I reserve that energy for people in my real life. IMO, it’s just fun to discuss everything Idol.

    Exactly.

Because the difference is the heavy hitters already have a solid fanbase and they can stand up to the competition. Sure Scotty did fine, but the others have just fallen in the cracks. Most people don’t have hundreds of dollars to spend on albums, so they pick people whose albums they have enjoyed in the past and will put off buying a debut album from an Idol that is being molded by a label. None of us know what the final sound of P2 will be and if he’s watered down to the point where no one cares. You guys are acting like Phil is a superstar and he isn’t. He’s a guy from a Karaoke show who has a hit fueled by the Olympics. If they don’t include the song on the album, he will need to have a solid hit.

Sorry, but a few shows ago, one fan told that at the M&G, the guards asked not to hug Phillip as he had recently undergone another operation. I’m telling this to talk about health.
And Yes, I think that Jimmy had better know what to do. At least, any statement, continues to be a long discussion. lol, As if we were again discussing that Jessica is successfully and Philip is broken as soon as the fall of confetti.
I would suggest to all wait and be happy for kids. And for the producers of AI – they have their “a couple of winners”, now let’s see how and what they will sell. Don’t want to offend J&J, we just really should see the double-finaly, as I understand it. Who wants a Fairytale?

  • wkstrack

Oh man. The Health theory! lol If P2 is truly  still in bad shape and security guards are telling people at the Meet and Greet to not touch his sides, etc (and sorry for bringing this photo up again) then can someone explain this photo?

I’m sure he had to take a few weeks off after surgery to recuperate but I don’t think his album being pushed back as anything to do with his health. I’m not too sure..

  • Anny_nanny

I don’t want to say that Phil was terminally ill, I’m just saying that we can’t know everything.

  • OffLeash

Wow. Why is he allowed to carry all that stuff when he’s still recovering from major surgery. That pic is kinda sad. :(

  • wordnerdarchie

It’s always seemed to me that Phil & his mgmt have been “milking it” (his medical condition) for quite some time. ;)

  • OffLeash

I totally disagree. I think if anything, it’s worse than P2 says it is.

  • wkstrack

Then why is he carrying that stuff if he’s not fully recuperated? If he wasn’t his PA or gf/fiancee could help him. Or Heejun who is also in the pic lol

  • OffLeash

He sure doesn’t look like he’s handling that weight too well.

  • jpfan2

Maybe P2 doesn’t want the fans grabbing him or that was pic was taken before the recent surgery? Who knows. P2 still looks pale and under the weather to me but I’m not following him closely.

I am following Home pretty closely and that’s doing great again after the Kelly appearance. So if he or his mngmt are “milking” an illness more power to them!
The best thing about P2 is that he comes across as very sincere and not a fame whore. For his genre of music that’s a winning combo.

  • standtotheright

P2 is a young man who has on more than one occasion rebuffed professional advice and is known for saying the first thing that comes into his head.

And people are somehow surprised that he would jump off a bus carrying gear without a prudent reflection on whether or not that’s good for him post-surgery?

I don’t think it says anything about his physical health.

  • standtotheright

Of course the compromise is getting him to co-write with people who can write marketable songs. That way, even if he can’t write marketable songs himself, it will give the illusion that he can. Provided he isn’t a massive mule and will let the actual song-writers do their jobs.

There’s also the part where, inasmuch as songwriting is a learned skill, working with others will help prepare him to do more on his own.

But I personally think that “40 to 50 songs” includes relatively few from co-writing sessions and quite a few of his self-penned, pre-AI songs, many of which probably never received more than a cursory listen from Interscope before they said “next.” He may well develop some skills with more sessions, but I doubt that’s what Interscope is waiting for. (It would be a nice bit of irony if that’s what they GOT, though.)

  • dishwalla

I can’t see why the CD won’t be made available for pre-order to take advantage of holiday sales.
