Last night’s Dancing with the Stars premiere ratings are down double digits compared to last spring. However, the show is up 19% in total viewers and 24% in the key demo over last fall’s All Star edition. Next week, DWTS will go head to head with The Voice on NBC. Should be an interesting battle.

On ABC, the season premiere of Dancing With the Stars garnered a 3.1 adults 18-49 rating down 11 percent from a 3.5 for  last spring’s season premiere on March 19, 2012. However, it delivered ABC’s second highest Adult 18-49 rating in the 2 hour time period since April 23, 2012.

    The Maks effect?

TBH…I was not that impressed last night. Will stick with it and do ‘The Voice/DWTS’ channel switching. Other than that 16 year old girl and maybe Kelly…no standouts so far. Rather blah group. Additional grouse: Brooke is getting to me..in a bad way.

I guess the younger demos are low but 16-17 million is pretty high these days…advertisers need to realize people over 49 buy cars and toothpaste and can change brands if presented with a good product

A bit creepy seeing Val with a 16year old. ..Feels wrong.. And are 10year olds really target audience??? DWTS lacks stars..You have numerous reality people …and other hasbeens that no one knows or cares about..And younger demos weren’t born when Ham ill was a national phenomenon and every girl had her haircut..people like wynonna have not been in the limelight for ages

  • quickjessie

The Voice is going to crush DWTS. I’m going to do the channel flipping this year ONLY because of Kellie. Once I see her perform, I’ll stay with TV. I don’t need to see the show to vote for Kellie anyway.

I have a feeling The Voice is about to become the #1 rated reality show out of ALL of them.

Good point about the creepiness of Val being paired with a teen. I thought gay Derick or Douche Ballas were supposed to have the youngins’ Well, I suppose Ballas has Ally who is 18 or 19–but even she’s a bit older than What’s-her-name (Val’s partner).

I agree. DWTS is still #1, the problem is these are no-name people, hardly anyone knows them. They’ve got to get “stars”!

ITA. Even before the AI season I thought there was a good chance of that happening and The Voice definitely has the momentum. I think the best AI can hope for is turn media buzz around to celebrating some really strong talent (especially Candace, Kree, and Angela but also Amber and Burnell if they could just right the ship with their song choices).

From a media buzz standpoint I gotta say AI did a very smart thing casting Kree. Not only are country artists tweeting their support for her every week, so is country media. That guarantees a higher media profile in a market that might otherwise be more inclined to focus on Blake on The Voice. Plus, Kree has much higher odds of success than the recent XF/Voice country or “country” winners. She’ll definitely come out of this show with way more country cred than Cassadee Pope (LOLZ).

History shows that older people are more reluctant to try new products. I think that we see this when it comes to buying music. Older consumers will purchase an acts older hits but not their new albums. It’s why I don’t think it makes any sense to market AI alums to older women, who are fans of Hot AC.

  • Miss Chaos

Derick is gay? I didnt know that, well he can dance good tho!

  • Miss Chaos

I loved the show last nite, and thought it was a good first outing for most everyone. I now have my favorites, and my dislikes on what I saw.

My best likes are Kelli, the girl with Mark, lol,Andy Dick, ( why hasnt he changed his name, lol) the football player, and I never like them, but he was entertaining,Dorothy Hamill, I liked Ingo, Sean, and Victor, and extreme dislike for Wynonna, and Aly, the rest Dont care about they will be gone.
I enjoyed the show. Gonna be hard to pick between The Voice and DWTS, but thats what I have a recorder for, and I can go back and forth, so I am good!

  • standtotheright

Hot AC is targeted at women 25-44. Some stations in the panel still play a lot of 80s hits, but a lot of them are essentially mini-CHRs with a bit more alt-rock and a lot less hip-hop. (And even then, you get some more urban crossover in the big city markets.)
The prime music buying cohort is people in their 20s and 30s, so Hot AC is still a valid target for that demo.

  • Incipit

Older consumers will purchase an acts older hits but not their new albums.

Well – as an older consumer, I loved. loved. loved Burn Halo’s 2009 eponymous album, especially “Our House” and “Dead End Roads and Lost Highways” – (but I didn’t buy their stuff when they were Eighteen Visions) and then they came out with Up From the Ashes in 2011, and I didn’t buy that one.

So In My Experience, it depends on the product…new, old, or otherwise, I only buy what I like. That would not be Hot AC, so yeah, it’s a complete waste of time to market that to me. But I understand you are generalizing about a consumer base, and the outliers don’t count at all.

  • LeahKittyS

I haven’t watched this show on TV since its 10th season, and I’m not going back; I’ll catch Kellie’s performances on YouTube for as long as she’s on there.

  • forwarddad

He’s not gay. And people should be careful of the things they throw around. Just because you think He is gay doesn’t make him gay.

  • Miss Chaos

I dont think he is gay, lol, I was questioning what was said, I was confused, I dont care if someone is gay or not, I was surprised that it was said he was gay. I like Derick!

  • Miz

Exactly what new products? Coke and Ford?

  • Miz

It’s going to be hard to choose when DWTS is up against The Voice. I really want to watch both. I’m going to have to switch back and forth and then watch them in full later.

  • http://twitter.com/desireechick Kesia Monteith

Yeah, so agree, and good for Kree. I’m really having a strong vibe on her chance of winning the show. I think she is going to do great post-Idol :)
