Possibly mistaken, but I think the 2nd stat is for LO on HAC?

Oops! Right you are. Thanks for catching that.

I’m surprised that ALTNOY is down 3 positions in Pop. Hopefully, the recent addition by Z100 will help in the coming weeks.

  • jpfan

Pulse has access to 50 -100 on Mediabase Top 40 chart so I’ll add:

ELLIOTT YAMIN Fight For Love Hickory ^97 Pop(246)

It officially goes for adds tomorrow.

ALTNOY’s been slow in the uptake, hasn’t it? Z100 is so influential, it should help. And Elvis Duran loves David.

Seems to me like Cook’s team is releasing new single(s) at just the right time, considering the performances of LO and TOML.

As an aside, Kelly and Cookie switching *positions* on HAC makes me chuckle a little. Cute the way they move together (and then apart, no doubt.) ;-)

Position is based on what other songs are doing as much as what a song itself is doing.

CBTM and BBS will (hopefully) pick up any slack soon enough. Until then, I’ll just have to try and be patient. Unfortunately, patience is not one of my most redeeming virtues.

  • Jolene

Yeah, my expectations are well managed… I just hope DCTR makes Top 50. And that the new singles pick it back up where it belongs soon enough.
The nice thing is knowing this is the calm before the storm. Also nich? That this is happening post Platinum. I can’t imagine how Jordin’s fans felt having to wait over a year.

  • weareallinnocent

Yeah, post-platinum sales and singles FTW! :-)

  • bjesgirl

Well, looks like Archie’s second single is an epic flop.

But it’s no suprise. No runner up has ever had more than one hit single. He had a good run. His album went gold and his single went platinum. More impressive than many predicted. Now he can go back to school like the rest of us commoners.

Aww. I really hope idol lets Melinda perform soon. I’s rather see her than MJ, Carly and Brooke TBH. I just know she’ll blow it out of the water. She really needs the promo.

  • Trina

I don’t think Archie’s song is a flop. Z100 only just added it last week and it might get more major markets this week. I think it took LO even longer than this to hit top 40.

I’m not expecting DC to stay in the Top 50 because I do expect a drop and the last few HDD updates have had him dropping quite a few spots. last week he went as low as 47 on Billboard. I’m hoping with Heroes being used for the ACC basketball this week it might at least lessen the decreases.

Well, I just don’t think the song is strong enough. I think TMH or Barriers would’ve faired better. ALTNOY sounds dated, imo- like something from ’04. I just don’t think it’s going to get anywhere.

  • leome

I think it took LO even longer than this to hit top 40.

It didn’t, I think LO hit top 40 one month after its adds date. Two different situations. Plus, 2 months after the adds date LO was already something like top 20 on HAC.

I’m curious about this, actually, since I didn’t watch LO’s chart climb closely. I don’t know a lot about how it went except that it peaked at #20 on CHR and #4 on HAC. Now that its chart run seems close to being over (on CHR, at least), I’m curious to look at the trajectory it had.

Hey, it only went down one spot.
    LOL, keeping it positive!

It didnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t, I think LO hit top 40 one month after its adds date. Two different situations. Plus, 2 months after the adds date LO was already something like top 20 on HAC.

Comparing ALTNOY and LO is like comparing apples and oranges. One was a debut single with a lot of push behind it and the other was a second single (which traditionally gets a lot less push than the first from an album).

Well, looks like Archieà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s second single is an epic flop.

But ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s no suprise. No runner up has ever had more than one hit single. He had a good run. His album went gold and his single went platinum. More impressive than many predicted. Now he can go back to school like the rest of us commoners.

It’s too soon to call flop. The song is slow, and it may not ultimately take off, but you don’t call flop the week after the #1 station in the country starts playing it, no matter how fast other songs are moving around it.

If ALTNOY doesn’t work out then oh, well. It’s not the end of David A.’s career. Kelly’s 2nd and 3rd singles from her first album didn’t fare all that well either. Jesse McCartney’s 2nd single from his current album didn’t do well, but his 3rd is doing well. The Fray only had 2 singles from their first album do well, and their first single from their second album is smashing. Jason Mraz only had 1 single from his first album hit, and 1 single from his 3rd album hit, but nobody is calling him, as an artist, a flop. One song doesn’t break an artist’s career unless that artist is with a terrible label. Jive isn’t a terrible label.

The fact that David A. is a “runner-up” has nothing to do with whether he’ll have a lasting career. The plain, hard, cold facts are that it’s tough to make it in the music industry. And if you don’t fit in a mainstream niche, you’re not going to do well in the long run. The fact that most Idol contestants (runners-up and winners and further down the line) don’t make it isn’t a product of the show, but of the music industry. David A. is by-far the most mainstream runner-up the show has had. He has a better chance than the others did. And his career can’t be over if Jive is spending time and money to send him off to the UK and Asia, and to film his concerts, and to put out a second studio album (confirmed).

  • lefty

and to put out a second studio album (confirmed).

Clearly I’m not keeping up well enough, but this is great (albeit not surprising) news!

  • noctem seizure

Well, looks like Archieà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s second single is an epic flop.

I wouldn’t call it a flop. It just picked up Z-100. But, it’s a tough call whether it would be better at this point to stick with it and take the chance that it will do nothing more than struggle for the next 2 – 3 months or whether just to pretend it never existed and get something else on the radio as soon as possible. There are positives and negatives associated with each option.

Honestly, I don’t think David is Jive’s priority, and I don’t think David Cook is RCA’s priority. Cook got nice promo, although 19 was more responsible for that than his label, I suspect. But, RCA seems to think releasing singles seven months apart is a good strategy. Or more likely, they’re just thoroughly consumed with Kelly Clarkson’s comeback.

And Jive’s overriding focus seems to have been to make sure Britney gets a final moment in the sun before she mercifully fades into obscurity….

I don ´t know if I could have some help here… maybe if someone will be willing to hwlp with info about One Step At A Time media performance where I can see how it was… if I remember this song only got to top 10 in Top 40 by october-november, and it has being out since april I think… does someone has more specific information, please?

  • Victoria

I agree with ya there. ALTNOY isn’t single material. It’s a nice, but they should have picked something different. The problem is, they released the strongest song (Crush) as the first single. They should have released the second strongest as the first when David could ride on the fame from Idol, then released Crush as the second single. It would have worked a lot better.

ETA: Cruzceleste, did One Step even reach the Top 10? I thought it peaked at #17, and it was released in June, not April.

  • Jolene

    FolkFan, you’re awesome.
So, appearantly LO indeed took one month to make Top 40, at which point it made the leap from #41 to #34. leome remembered correctly, that same week it also made HAC Top 20. It kept climbing on CHR for 11 more weeks, peaking at #20 three and a half months after the add date. Looking at the numbers, LO had a slow, steady climb on CHR. Knowing what I know now, I think it did very well considering the format is far from a natural fit for that song.
I can only hope CBTM will go on to do even better. No matter what, it will be interesting to track its progress.

  • soundscene

And Jiveà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s overriding focus seems to have been to make sure Britney gets a final moment in the sun before she mercifully fades into obscurityà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦.

Jive really isn’t doing a whole lot for Britney–her comeback is sort of self-fueled. She isn’t even doing a whole lot of promotion. They just keep releasing singles and radio keeps picking them up because this is the “new, improved” Britney as opposed to the “crazy” Britney that radio wouldn’t play last year. Jive could set an add date for Britney’s cover of her “ABCs” and radio would pick it up–that’s how easy it is for her right now. A lot of stations are even playing her 3rd single with the title that can’t even be said fast without being offensive.

And you gotta know that Jive has scratched whatever plans they had for Chris Brown this year (a tour was in the works). That’s not going to happen anytime soon. What they are working on are a new Backstreet Boys album and Nick Lachey’s new album. He just released his first single from it called “Patience” that is doing pretty ok on Hot AC, although not doing much yet on Top 40.

Jive peeps were at the Chicago HOB show last night, so they flew people out for that. Execs also showed up at the New Jersey show. Obviously David is on their minds because, besides Britney, he’s their best-performing artist with a current album out.

The performance of one single doesn’t indicate the level of support a label has for an artist. In fact, you can see how far a label is willing to support an artist by their actions after a single doesn’t hit.

I don’t agree with every move Jive makes, but I never got the idea that David A. isn’t a priority for them.

David A.’s bandmates spoke with fans last night and apparently he’s been set up to do a summer tour as an opening act here in the US. We don’t know what act–they wouldn’t say. But Jive isn’t dropping the ball. I’ve seen labels drop the ball, and it’s very sad. It consists of running out a contract with live albums, zero promotion, no attempt at touring, no attempt at radio promotion, constant fighting about the artist’s “direction,” and so forth. It’s not pretty. That’s not happening here.

And for the record, it doesn’t seem to be happening with Cook and RCA either.

ETA: Cruzceleste, did One Step even reach the Top 10? I thought it peaked at #17, and it was released in June, not April.

OSAAT reached top 5 on Top 40 radio. It was never a fabulous seller, but it got very good radio airplay. It was timed very well–I don’t think it’s a classic radio song, but it worked for Jordin. I believe it peaked around October-November, but I don’t remember when it was released for adds. It was slower, but not a super slow song. She was coming off of “No Air.”

^^^A wealth of info soundscene, Thanks!

  • LK09

Soundscene- I have been watching David’s career since AI, and although I am disapointed and puzzled as to why ALTNOY hasn’t been played on the radio as much as Crush, I am extremely pleased wtih how he has grown, how he keeps getting great reviews and turning heads, especially from people who had a preconceived idea about him from AI, and how JIVE is supporting and promoting him.

They are also beginning to realize how they can trust the direction David wants to go. IMO the best songs David has are the ones he co-wrote and were either left off the album or were bonuses. It is fantastic that they have let him do “Zero Gravity”, “Works for Me” and “Somebody Out there” at his concerts. You can tell he absolutely loves those songs.

  • JudyOhio

Hey, the way I see it, the Davids are doing great. They both appear as happy as pigs in mud! Happy, smiling, singing, recording, touring, meeting and greeting, interviewing, being adored by their fans, and loving life!…….it’s all good!

Thanks for the info about OSAAT, so I have to give at least 5 months to ALTNOY before worring… doesn ´t matter I ´m a pattience person… I really like ALTNOY, is my second most played song in my iTunes, and I really wonder what isn ´t getting ads… one of the things I can think is the fact that most Top 40 radio stations don ´t ad songs until they reach top 40, and sadly with Britney, Beyonce and Kelly out there right now ALTNOY have a hard competition… oh well… I still love the song even more than I love Crush…

  • bjesgirl

Well, the main problem is that the climate has changed quite a bit. ALTNOY may have fit 4 months ago, but not anymore. It seems like pop stations are becomning rhythmic stations, like they were back in ’03. Thats why he really needs to release Barriers at this point. That’s the most rhythmic song on the album, and I think people will be surprised and impressed that he can pull off a song with so much attitude. If that flops as well, then they should move on to album number two.

  • soundscene

I do agree with you on that point. Pop radio has changed in the last couple of months, and not for the better. I don’t think it goes back as far as 4 months–more like since the beginning of the year. I mean, if I wanted to listen to rhythmic/urban songs, I would tune in to a rhythmic/urban radio station. There are plenty of them. But even Beyonce’s “Halo” isn’t going as fast as it should considering she’s coming off of “Single Ladies” (which is dead now) and “Halo” is really very good (much better IMO than “If I Were A Boy”). But it’s not beat-drive, non-melodic hip hop. Nor is it alt-pop like “Gives You Hell” or “American Suitehearts.” It’s not like 3OH!3 or Jamie Foxx’s new autotuned mess.

It’s not so much the songs at the top of the chart that reflect this wonky “version” of CHR as much as the songs coming up from the bottom. Although, as soon as CHR decided it was going in this direction, songs like Katy Perry’s “Thinking of You” and Leona Lewis’s “I Will Be” just stalled out and started falling. Quick rise and tumble. Radio decided they weren’t about melody anymore. At least Katy managed a top 20 before dying out. Leona wasn’t given that privilege.

So yeah, ALTNOY isn’t in the right “window” on CHR. If it had been released 4 or 5 months ago, then it probably would be doing much better. I don’t fault Jive for not knowing how radio was planning on changing. Radio was really urban a few years ago, and started to get better. Last year was pretty good. This year it looks to be reverting back.

I don’t know what that means for ALTNOY. Even my Hot AC-leaning CHR here in Honolulu is trending more urban and has become a weird mix of rap and post-grunge rock and alt. That’s not the pop radio that I particularly like, and I had to turn my radio off this afternoon after getting so tired of listening to such a janky playlist. David A. isn’t urban, and yeah, the closest song he has to R&B is “Barriers.” For the record, “Barriers” was my pick for second single. And I would take it as a third. But I’m not even sure that “Barriers” is rhythmic enough for what is happening on CHR.

Sadly, the song that would actually fit the best on CHR right now for David A.? The unreleased “Zero Gravity.”

Soundscene, I wouldn’t give up on Zero Gravity being released. People coming from recent concerts have said they were told it is going to be– maybe on a new deluxe album. It could be the next single. It is getting such a great response. Even Priestly on XM 20 on 20 loves it and has been talking about it.

  • Anya

Maybe this second DA’s album this year is a deluxe edition of some songs from album #1 and some that did not get on album #1 like ZG, some vid clips from the tour, etc. Someone said that TMH from the House of Blues will be released as a video. Great idea! If anyone wants to check out ZG, there are some great vids on YT. There are also tons of other concert videos of David’s songs with different arrangements like My Hands. Wow! Hoping that the third single is Barriers or Waiting for Yesterday if it’s not ZG.

  • LK09

Anya, I just posted this “Waiting for Yesterday” on the headlines thread. I just love how David is so relaxed and looks so happy. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sM95ghcaT-g&eurl=http://www.snarkyarchies.com/

I’m a little late to the party on this Mediabase Monday, but for those interested in the chart trajectory for ‘Light On,’ here are some visual aids:

‘Light On’ weekly chart and sales history

‘Light On’ airplay vs. sales trend graph

I also have them for ‘Time of My Life’ if anyone wants to take a gander at a true freak of nature:

LOL. Oh yes. The Magic Rainbow will not be denied! There’s a fair chance TOML will still be on the charts when the confetti is falling and Adam Gokey is singing the S8 coronation song. (Just kidding. On the Adam Gokey part).

Sorry if this has already been explained somewhere, but Archie is putting out a second album this year? When and where was this announced? Isn’t that sort of fast for a second album?

  • frogcooke

I dont think he’s putting out a second album this year… but the christmas album should be out by the end of the year.

Fans of david posted a scoop and said: ‘david will be putting out album #2 and a christmas album by the end of the year’

Now some aren’t exactly sure what that meant… 2 albums this year or just the christmas.

I think they were just confirming the fact he is doing a second album, and that this year the christmas album will be out.

  • Jolene

à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‹david will be putting out album #2 and a christmas album by the end of the yearà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢

But doesn’t the bolded word sort of resolve the confusion? If he’s putting out this and this, he’s putting out two different things. Whether they have their info right is something else, but I did understand they confirmed that this means both a Christmas album and a 2nd studio album during 2009.
Have to admit, that sounds very rushed to me, and I don’t get the logic in releasing two albums in such a short span of time (or simultaniously?). Makes sense to draw out releases and make the most of each one, IMHO.

Also, what about Archie’s first album, is it done already, will there be more singles or are they going with a next single from album #2? I think releasing a Christmas album this year is smart for Archie, but a 2nd album so soon is just puzzling.

OK, I’m being a geek here, but the original statement, as worded, could mean either

    1. he’s putting out album #2 and a Christmas album by the end of the year

    OR

    2. he’s putting out album #2 , and a Christmas album by the end of the year

It’s all about the missing comma after “#2″. Is it absent by design, or by accident … lol? Because if it was meant to be there then it could mean album #2 – date TBA – and Christmas album by the end of the year.

(Can you tell that I loved Eats, Shoots, and Leaves?)

Now back to pretending that I have a real life…

^^Is Cook still slated to appear on AI next week? :-)

Rumors are that he is, but I guess we won’t know for sure until/if someone says so on the show tomorrow.

Happy the ranking seems to have improved, at least, and for staying in the Top 50. I can’t wait for the next phase of this era to start, the between-singles slump sort of sucks.

    Ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s all about the missing comma after à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“#2à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ³. Is it absent by design, or by accident à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦ lol?

Got you. I did read that it was missing by design, but really, I’ve read my share of leaks that didn’t pan out so this I’m taking all of this with a whole salt shaker.

  • lefty

Jolene, I also should have qualified my above comment by saying that I have no idea what’s going on with album #2 … I was just dissecting the statement for fun.

It is, however, my sincere hope that there will NOT be a second album in 2009 unless it’s a deluxe version of the current one. A second one so soon would make no sense. Definitely sounds like a wonky leak to me. :)
