    David Cook: à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Time of My Lifeà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ : 1 AC (1)

This is getting more wonderfully absurd. Hee! How many weeks has Magic Rainbow been #1? I know there were 11 consecutive weeks and then Christmas, but am not sure does this make it 14 times now?

Great to see Light On moving up the different charts.

As always, Kirsten, thanks for the numbers.

I guess I don’t understand what Jive is doing with Jordin right now. Why haven’t they released a new single for her? OSAAT is pretty much dead and she doesn’t have a new album out for awhile correct? Why have a gap and lose momentum?

  • FolkFan

    Thanks, Kirsten.

I’m not sure how many weeks at number 1 this would be for the Rainbow on mediabase, but it will likely be 14 non-consecutive weeks at number 1 on Billboard/R&R when those charts are released later this week. Viva la Vida has narrowed the gap on the Rainbow this week, and I’m Yours is moving up quickly (by AC standards), but it wouldn’t be shocking to see the Rainbow make another week at the top of AC, as well.

  • sma11ie

What About Now is still doing really well. That song’s been out forever, it seems.

I don’t know if Jordin’t getting a fourth single. I don’t think it’s that common for pop stars to gets even three unless you’re a huge name. Of course, this is just based on my own anecdotal, unscientific observation from years of listening to radio.

  • Kirsten

I guess I donà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t understand what Jive is doing with Jordin right now. Why havenà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t they released a new single for her?

They appear to have decided to stop promoting the album. They likely decided that the costs of promoting a new single will not have sufficient return on investment. She’s currently in studio recording her next album. She’s had three singles from her first album (one huge hit, one hit and one moderate hit) so that’s pretty good.

  • Jolene

Is this the first time LO made Top 10 on HAC?
It’s pretty cool to see it chart on 3 different formats like that.

And the Magic Rainbow continues its reign. Fantastic.

  • hypertwink

He’s finally charting on AC?! Yay!!!

  • hollygo9

They appear to have decided to stop promoting the album. They likely decided that the costs of promoting a new single will not have sufficient return on investment.

If they are smart, they will start release a new single from the new CD shortly. Then, she can promote in AI in the next few months. I wonder if they are holding back on a new Cookie single for the same reason?

Thank you, Pam! Damn January. I will be thrilled if DC stays in the Top 20 again. Fingers crossed.

As for releasing a second single, I think DC mentioned that they wanted to let LO breathe a bit back in December. Last week there was a RTM survey of three songs off DCTR that are being considered for the next single. So I’m sure it will be forthcoming. They just have to plan accordingly given that DC is going to Iraq and planning the tour. A new single release will require a lot of press & promotion, too. I’m sure this will coincide with an appearance on AI8 along with a Platinum presentation (fingers crossed) for DCTR. I noticed that they had Jordin on Top 8 results night for her duet with Chris Brown along with a plaque presentation.

  • http://myspace.com/pm68 Pam

^Your welcome Sasha. I will be too.

  • FolkFan

I agree, Sasha. There is a chance that LO can make top 20 on Top 40 and top 5 on HAC in early February, so I’m guessing that between that and timing of DC availability for promo/US tours, they’re holding off for now on the single announcement.

One interesting thing on HDD this week: normally, it seems pretty clear that partial Wal-Mart and partial Best Buy are in the first update, because you get both AC/DC and GnR in the first update. Wal-Mart’s clearly in there, because AC/DC is in there. However, while the percentage in is consistent with that pattern, GnR does not appear anywhere on the top 50. So, either GnR has slid enough in sales not to make the top 50 based on partial Best Buy, or else there is no Best Buy in there at all. (If that’s the case, I’d think that itunes and the first Best Buy update maybe flipped.)

Fingers crossed for DCTR maintaining its ranking from last week…. I could easily see Twilight moving up, and maybe Katy Perry if itunes is not in there yet.

    I think I’m gonna like Brian Mansfield….

  • ptslittlecomment

So, anymore updates ( she says hopefully before signing off for awhile)?

  • FolkFan

Nope. HDD is acting weird—currently, it will only show Nos. 1 to 15 of the first update. So it may be experiencing computer problems.

GwendolynD: Yeah, it was more fun looking at the album sales numbers in December, but that number for DC is actually pretty in line with what most of the chart seems to be doing thus far (well, not Taylor Swift, but she’s not a good benchmark for much of anyone). Last year, CDs in the top 10 or so went down an average of 54% during the comparator week to this one, and thus far, the decreases for the top 15 look to be smaller than that. (Basically, if DC were to have a 54% decrease, you’d expect his total numbers for the week to be just a bit above 14,000. It seems likely from this update that he’ll beat that.)

  • Jolene

I’m not expecting DC to top 20k this week, but I hope he makes it to 18, just because 860k is a pretty, round figure as a total.
But as long as he sticks around the Top 20 in his rank, I’m good. January is a weak month for everyone.

I double checked to make sure, but I didn’t see DA on the chart with this update.

  • FolkFan

That’s a promising update—that’s a bigger jump for him moving from 36% to 54% than last week.

It looks like there was at least some Target in there—as LadyM pointed out, the All Wrapped Up CD is a Target exclusive. Still no GnR. There’s also no Erin McCarley in there, so it seems like itunes is not in. So, maybe Best Buy is in and GnR didn’t sell enough to be top 50.

  • SashaB

Thanks Pam. I was wondering when we’d get an update. So now we just need 46% – I’m still hoping for Top 20 – but I’ll be okay if he’s still in the Top 25. Fingers crossed.

  • http://myspace.com/pm68 Pam

^Your welcome Sasha. As Folkfan pointed out earlier, HDD started looking strange. All we were able to see at one point was only 1-15 with 16-50 missing. I kept manually refreshing my page and eventually I got a page back that showed all 50. That was weird.

  • lovegoodmusic

    hollygo9:

I wonder if they are holding back on a new Cookie single for the same reason?

I think they are holding back a new single for Cook, for several reasons. One reason is that, Light On continues to climb its way up the charts. So the song is doing well, and there is no reason to rush out a new single at this time. Two, its still selling.

But it is possible that RCA is waiting to release a new single when the David Cook Band gets back from their USO tour in Iraq. Because David needs to be here when a new single is released, so he can promote it.

And Jordin’s situation is different from David’s, because she is making her second post Idol album. Whereas, David just released his first post Idol album.

So there is a good possibility that David will appear on IDOL after the tour with a new single.

I hope this answers your question. :smile_wp:

I know its a new day and all (jkg! MJ) , but did HDD cooperate enough to provide any final estimates?

  • SashaB

Way to stay in the Top 20, David Cook. Awesome. Damn January. Looks like 16-18 were close. All those other rock albums, aside from the monster that is Nickleback, have fallen by the way side: Fall Out Boys, All American Rejects, The Killers, Staind. Way to represent!! Go DC.

  • ptslittlecomment

Thanks for the updates you have been able to provide. Computer problems are frustrating all around so I can’t complain. Hope the last batch of reports are from DC – friendly merchants.

  • SashaB

Okay, so it looks like those are not final HDD numbers. Only 69% thus far.

  • Jolene

Thanks for the update. My estimate has been 18k, and I think DCTR will get there for a total of 860k. Hopefully it won’t slide out of the Top 20 with the final update.

January is so frustrating. I hope AI starting will help diminish next week’s predicted decline and keep the album above 15k.

  • sma11ie

All those other rock albums, aside from the monster that is Nickleback, have fallen by the way side

Kings of Leon is rock. Incidentally, they are getting great buzz and are very good. Great sound and songs, too bad the lead singer’s voice grates on certain songs after a while. But then again I might be ruined in terms of rock voices by DC, heh.

Anyway, didn’t mean to be anal about KOL, cuz I do think DC’s doing well in light of the January doldrums. Hoping Kimmel, AI8, and the upcoming tour will ramp up DC’s sales soon!

What’s with the Kings of Leon resurgence? Or have they been hanging out in the Top 20 all along and I just never knew it? I haven’t bought the album yet but have downloaded 2 of their songs. The lead singer could be better but the songs are great.

But yeah, weird that AAR, FOB, The Killers and Staind are now off the Top 20. When are the Fray releasing their album? The January charts are REALLY pop/r&b heavy, aren’t they? Hopefully, February shows a bit more of a rock resurgence.

  • dante

:clap_tb: I am so happy for DC staying in top 20 for another week!!!!!!!!

  • CathyMK

Well, we knew January would be ugly. Is it next week when they bottom out? Can’t wait to get past that point. I hope both Davids are able to get out there and do some serious promo in the next couple of months, so that they can boost their sales.

As a fan of the Killers and AAR, I’m really sad to see how much they’ve dropped, especially since AAR’s album hasn’t even been out a month. I love that album, but it is different from their last one. I think Kings of Leon have a new single out, don’t they? Maybe that’s given them a boost.

  • FolkFan

Last year, the decreases continued for two more weeks.

  • Jolene

Last year, the decreases continued for two more weeks.

    Oh man.
I guess that means 900k by February isn’t likely, huh?

  • jpfan

Those numbers could be worse. At least the #1 album sold more than 70K. I actually predicted the correct number for Cook’s album last week – 19K-20K. For the heck of it, I say Cook’s numbers for next week – 16-17K.
I don’t think album sales recover in a big way until the Grammy hype starts (sometime in February I think). Or a big album needs to debut to get people back buying CDs again.

  • FolkFan

I’m cautiously optimistic that he’ll be at or near 900K by the end of the first week of February. If the trends for the next three weeks are similar to last year, he’d be between 898,000 and 899,000. The decreases this year for the top 20, including DC, were better than last year, so while 900K by the end of January doesn’t look very realistic, 900K the next week looks reasonably possible.

  • Hazehel

so while 900K by the end of January doesnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t look very realistic, 900K the next week looks reasonably possible.

There are three more weeks to go if you include the week ending on 1st of February, I’d say that 900K by the end of January/start of February is a certainty. My prediction for platinum by then has gone to pot, seeing that David Cook is appearing to be on a post-Christmas Jordin Sparks-like trajectory rather than Daughtry’s. But next week you shouldn’t see David Cook dropping much and he might even see an increase thanks to American Idol starting and the little bit of promotion.

  • JudyOhio

Wonder where DA ended up. Hopefully, Idol Chatter will have it tomorrow.
