I’m trying to breathe. So far I love it! I’m listening in order. Some people on ontd_ai are jumping all over the place listening to songs and they are excited. They seem to love I Need to Know, which is the song I’m most interested in hearing.

  • tinawina

I really like this so far. Its very Kris, it seems like he got a lot of his stamp on this. Very nice.

  • Eileen99

I LOVE IT. It’s far more acoustic than the snippets indicated. There’s a wide variety here. I really love it.

  • gingerly

The songs keep stopping for me. No clue why. Some will play for a minute or two and some will only play for seconds…frustrating.

  • cookbunny

So far…I freaking LOVE it. I’m on “Bring It Back” right now. The piano on it is BEAUTIFUL. “The Truth” is just…whoa. Almost makes me forget another Idol did a song called “The Truth” (note I said ALMOST).

I’m sure I’ll post with more thoughts.

Oh wait…I’m on “Red Guitar” now. OMG It’s not about the guitar, it’s about KATY. The red guitar is his HEART, awwwwwwww!!!! *giddy*

  • koshka

I’ve not been a huge Kris fan to date … but I am open minded. Can someone point me towards his stronger songs?

  • Mtlfan

love the ones I already heard.. “bring it back” is very cool

  • mimi

I’m on Alright With Me… was a little worried about the horns in this one, but the beginning and breakdown totally make up for it. Holy crap this album is so awesome!

  • will

i’ve listened to like 3 songs so far (i’m going in order) and so far I’m very impressed.. all 3 songs can be singles for sure (we’ll Live Like We’re Dying IS already a single). if the rest of the songs on the album are just as good…Kris could do very well on the charts. this is exactly what he needed to put out

  • Kanadie Bonttell

Speaking from the view of a diehard Adam fan….I like Kris songs, and are much better than I expected. They are very Rob Thomas though, but I really like Rob Thomas, so I guess that is good!

  • serene

M I over-emotional that I’m bawling at every single song? Tearing up flood of tears on The Truth & Let It Rain & Bring It Back. Million times better than the snippets which I was already crazy about!! Help me, need loads of Kleenex…

His voice his pure gorgeousness. Did I mention he sounds very sexy too?

I’m deliriously HAPPY for Kris!!!!! :)

  • carmine2008

I feel so vindicated right now. I am so proud to be a Kris Allem fan!!! This album is perfect!!!

Happy for all the Kris fans, too. Great day for you guys.

I disagree about the Rob Thomas comparison. But, it doesn’t matter ’cause the songs are beautiful!!!

  • mimi

@ koshka… IMO I would listen to Before We Come Undone, Red Guitar, Alright With Me and I Need to Know… but the whole album is great :)

  • http://onlinepastrychef.wordpress.com/ onlinepastrychef

On song 3 so far–I’m really enjoying it. He sounds great, and so far, the songs are far away from Cookie Cutter. Kris has a lovely voice, and it’s shown off to great advantage.

serene: I’m sure I’ll be weeping uncontrollably when I hear Adam’s album. I think it’s some sort of weird Pride Gene that gets activated by multiple votes for our favorite Idol!

  • happygolucky

Congratulations to Kris Allen. It ‘feels’ very much like him.

Happy for all the Kris fans, too. Great day for you guys.

More like great week!!! Red Guitar is intense. I love Alright with me. I love all of the tracks. Great job Kris!!! :)

I agree the songs are very beautiful!

In no way did I mean the Rob Thomas comment to be negative…he is one of my favorite all time artists!

  • rayni

Can’t Stay Away – still awesome. So better be a single. I’m loving this. This is my favorite idol album from start to finish ever.

  • cookbunny

    Back with more…

“Is It Over”: ooh, this is bluesy, smoky, dare I say SEXY Kris (with a side of Cale I may add). Daaaaaaamn…

“Let It Rain”: Very very purdy…

“Alright With Me”: Geez, I can’t stop bopping my feet in time under my desk! I wish I could just get up and dance but my officemate would look at me funny…

  • ai_fan

Ok, I’m at work tearing up at everyone’s descriptions the songs. I’m so happy for Kris. I have 5 more hours to go to listen to it and I better buy kleenex on the way home.

  • girlygirl

Kris’ voice on I Need to Know is just so raw, like he’s been ripped open. The snippet we heard didn’t do it any kind of justice

  • rayni

Kris has a lovely voice, and it’s shown off to great advantage.

He sounds so good. He’s recognizable and lovely. Didn’t expect to be this captivated.

  • http://krisallenonline.blogspot.com/ kizgold

OMG. I am so glad for all those votes because I fricken love this album! Right up my alley!!Knew I liked this kids musical style! On Can’t stay away and it is my early fave of the 3 I’ve listened to can’t wait to hear the rest!

  • cheesehead

huh?? its not working for me , im clicking on the ”play” button but its not working, are ppl from outside of usa having the same problem?

  • kneipho

Congrats to Mr. Allen on a job well done!

  • gossipgirl630

omg.. on Red Guitar.. such an amazing song so far!! it was so sweet for him to include this song on the album for Katy!! I love it!!

  • tierbee

Listening to it song by song and excited to buy it – I really like this! Currently toe-tapping along to Written All Over My Face and just really, really enjoying this album. Yay, Kris!

  • Mtlfan

cheesehead, i’m in Canada and it works for me

I’m mid way in the listening and it’s just awesome

  • rayni

Written All Over My Face – funkier edgier sound than I expected.

The Truth – lovely, angsty and a little David Cookish.

    Just delicious.

  • ilovekrisallen39

The Truth is killing me. I love it so much. Am so proud of kris and so glad for all of us fans.

  • gossipgirl630

to the people who have listened to the whole album: Do you think people would consider it “cookie cutter”?? my opinion: i haven’t listened to the whole thing but so far I don’t think it is. Anyone agree with me??

  • hypnoticwhisper

I dont want to hear all of the songs until I buy the album, but I listened to “Heartless” and I LOVE this version. It’s got flare and edge. It was missing in the Kanye version

It totally beats Kanye. just saying

  • carmine2008

    My favorite in descending order:

    1. Let it Rain
    2. Bring it Back
    3. Is it Over
    4. I need To Know
    5. The Truth
    6. Alright With Me
    7. Lifetime
    8. Before We Come Undone
    9. Written All Over My Face
    10. Red Guitar
    11. Live Like We’re Dying
    12. Cant Stay Away
    13. Heartless

The ballads are definitely better than the upbeat ones. And yep the triumvirate of new songs he sang in Miami are in the bottom of the list. If you think those three are great, you’re going to love the unreleased ones.

  • Mtlfan

“Let it rain” is treuly a very beautiful song… swoooonn

  • girlygirl

Ok I finished listening…now I can breathe. I am so hpy right now…the album is freaking great. My least favorites on it are the remix of Heartless and Lifetime, but even those are more than decent.

    edited

So proud of Kris right now! I don’t know if it will be a smash hit in terms of sales, but he has put out an album he can definitely be proud of.

  • julieitis

LOVE Bring It Back. This album is awesome.

  • rayni

Bring It Back – smoky piano lead in. Love it, good lord it’s breaking my heart. The bridge is nice. I just love his voice and the way he delivers a song. He said he forgot what love is and he wants me to bring it back. And I believed him….

  • carmine2008

At this point I was already crying my heart out. OMG.

    Red guitar..oh just oh!
Completely in love with Alright with Me
Great production on I need to Know love love it

LOL at Kris singing about putting on his poker face.

Um…what poker face, bb? You have no poker face!

  • carmine2008

I agree the songs are very beautiful!

In no way did I mean the Rob Thomas comment to be negative’ ¦he is one of my favorite all time artists!

Oops. Pardon me. I’m still incoherent with happiness right now. Hahaha. I love Rob Thomas too. I meant that it doesn’t matter that we disagree cause the songs are beautiful either way. :)

  • luci

huh?? its not working for me , im clicking on the ‘ play’ button but its not working, are ppl from outside of usa having the same problem?

Yeah I live outside of the U.S and I can’t hear it either. Help Anyone……

  • carmine2008

LOL at Kris singing about putting on his poker face.

Um’ ¦what poker face, bb? You have no poker face!

I thought I was the only one who was going to notice. Hahaha.

  • tinawina

I agree. It is fresh and it sounds like Kris. Perfect.

I think so too. I sounds very much like him, and I think he did the Fray/Rob Thomas/Maroon 5 thing with a soulish twist, and lots of rhythm in these songs. He has his own way of phrasing too… I think he is starting to find his own sound here. Its a solid album.

The interesting thing is it does sound like some of these could actually get on AAA if they were open to an Idol.

Congrats Kris! I guess I’ll give a more detailed reaction later when I’ve had time to listen again.

  • mimi

@ luci– At idolforums they have posted a link for those outside the US. Do you visit that site? If not I will post the link here.

  • cookbunny

girlygirl, I gotta admit I LOLed when I heard that line!

“mah mah mah poker face mah mah poker face…”

  • Kirsten

are ppl from outside of usa having the same problem?

I’m in Canada and I could listen. There was about a 10 second lag between pushing the button and the music starting though.

  • http://wwpv.smcvt.edu VAidolFan09

I suppose I’m in a minority but I really didn’t like it…it pretty much put me to sleep. Sorry Kris fans but this one just didn’t work for me…

  • Mtlfan

omg “I need to know” … just omg!

  • rayni

Is It Over has such a Beatles vibe and I love it so much. This is so close to being my favorite. I love those minor chords and he says he won’t let me go as I walk out on him. Best bridge yet – good lord, good lord I love this song. I’m exhausted.

  • deez

I LOVE it. Was afraid I wouldn’t after the snippets, but NO…the songs DO NOT sound alike!!!! Ironically, there are only 2 songs on here I don’t like and one is “Let it Rain” which everybody else seems to love, lol…so go figure!

Love the rawness of “I need to know”….read somewhere that he sang that lying on the floor, exhausted. Good call, gives it a lot of emotion.

  • jericho

to the people who have listened to the whole album: Do you think people would consider it ‘cookie cutter’ ??

It sounds exactly like I thought it would. I really wish I liked this kind of music since it would open up a plethora of choices but honestly this kinda stuff just makes me want to slit my wrists and get in a warm bathtub.
But enough about me, to answer your question, my opinion is that it sounds just like many, many other albums in the same genre of music. If you like Kris’s voice, you can tell it’s him on several of the tracks so fans will probably like those songs. Otherwise, if I were to hear most of the songs on the radio, I would not be able to distinguish his voice from at least a dozen other singers who currently have music out today. IMO, the CD isn’t fresh, new or groundbreaking.

  • Mtlfan

he has soo pretty vocals on Heartless

  • Summer

Nice album, but why is someone banging on a garbage can during Heartless?

  • JohnM

Just finished listening to the whole album — not listening as intensely as usual, as I’m working at the same time, but — it’s really good. Seems very high-quality, and doesn’t seem over-produced at all, unlike Cook’s album last year. Well done, young man — listening to this, it makes perfect sense to me that you won AI.

Don’t really know the songs yet, so don’t want to go picking favorites, but off the top of my head, Before We Come Undone really hits the spot, and I’m a sucker for da funk, so I really like Can’t Stay Away as well. And I Need To Know is a perfect album-closer (they really really shouldn’t have put Heartless after it — which, by the way, can’t hold a candle to his acoustic version).

gossipgirl630: to the people who have listened to the whole album: Do you think people would consider it ‘cookie cutter’ ?? my opinion: i haven’t listened to the whole thing but so far I don’t think it is. Anyone agree with me??

    Certainly not cookie-cutter.

This is the link for jambajim’s “OMG this is me right now” — the one posted above isn’t working:

  • cookbunny

Well, I couldn’t edit, so I’ll just say I LOVE THE WHOLE DAMN THING! (um, with the small exception of “Lifetime”…the one weak point IMHO)

  • girlygirl

I also want to say that there is a bunch of higher register and falsetto in these songs and Kris sounds fab in these parts (although my favorite parts are when he uses that sexy lower register)

  • Mtlfan

    What is this cookie-cutter thing?

  • anovich

Ok, I’m at work tearing up at everyone’s descriptions the songs. I’m so happy for Kris. I have 5 more hours to go to listen to it and I better buy kleenex on the way home.

6 hours, approximately, til I will be home and can listen to this – so excited with all these positive comments on here – extremely excited for Red Guitar and I Need To Know!!!!

  • data785

I think I may be buying some singles off this. Go Kris!

  • http://twitter.com/glamtwinkle twinkle

kris was my #2 and i had intended to buy his album… but after listening online im thinking i will just pick and choose… there were too many i had to hit “next” on. i think it is because kris falls within one of my major genre preferences (i have a whole section of “boys with guitars” cds) and he really isnt standing out amongst them to me. a few of the songs are stand outs though. i really like “cant stay away.”

eta – i also like Alright with me… that one sticks out amongst the rest. i wish he had done more like that.

  • 4Msrmyn

Alright with Me should have been his first single.

  • carmine2008

    What is this cookie-cutter thing?

Someone asked if the album sounds “cookie-cutter” meaning formulaic and average. Some people said no, some people said yes. I say HELL NO!!!

  • gossipgirl630

okay. confession time: When American Idol ended in May, I was shocked that Kris won the whole show and Adam didn’t. After listening to Kris’ full album I have to say that I think America got it right. Just by listening to his songs I have to say that his style of music will appeal to more people than Adam’s. I listened to the whole thing from start to finish and the only track I really don’t like is the remix of “Heartless” (i definitely prefer the acoustic version). Overall, I love the album and it’s definitely something for Kris to be proud of!! If people buy this album, Kris has a chance of doing VERY well post idol. This is also the first time that I’ve liked an entire debut album by an American Idol winner so that tells you something.

  • carmine2008

kris was my #2 and i had intended to buy his album’ ¦ but after listening online im thinking i will just pick and choose’ ¦ there were too many i had to hit ‘next’ on.

I suggest you finish each song. Most of them pick-up towards the end. It will blow away then. :)

  • cookbunny

VAIdolFan, no problem from my end…I understand he’s not going to be everyone’s cuppa.

I have had the hardest time with edits…we used to have a 20 minute window and now it’s down to 4? Holy Moley! I just had to add, the “Heartless” snippet I didn’t like but the whole song is really great! Not as good as his acoustic “moment” but still better than Kanye. “Red Guitar,” “Is It Over,” “The Truth,” “Alright With Me” and “I Need To Know” are my favorites right now. So yeah, “I Need To Know” what the lyrics are, cause they were a bit mumbly, but OMFG the PAIN of longing in his voice…I’m just crushed, but in a good way (they is a good way to be crushed, right?).

And okay, I may have my username yanked for this, but…I liked it better than Cook’s Idol debut record. *ducks*

  • luci

At idolforums they have posted a link for those outside the US. Do you visit that site? If not I will post the link here.

I would be really grateful if you can post the link. Thanks mimi

  • carmine2008

This is also the first time that I’ve liked an entire debut album by an American Idol winner so that tells you something.

Me too. I’m so surprised at the absence of the so-called “album fillers”.

  • rayni

All Right with Me – so happy and upbeat. It’s the most ‘different’ song of them all to me.

Lifetime is also better than the snippet.

  • BootStar

Alright with Me should have been his first single.

I was just coming to post the same thing!

  • Mtlfan

Someone asked if the album sounds ‘cookie-cutter’ meaning formulaic and average. Some people said no, some people said yes. I say HELL NO!!!

thanks carmine2008… geez I agree with you! It’s an original album

  • http://www.dallascowboys.com GeminiDolly

Solid album by Kris. I hope he sells well, but if it doesnt- at least he put out the music that he wanted and suits him.

  • mimi
  • mysan

Just finished listening to the entire album. WOW!!!! I can’t stop grinning from ear to ear. I am so proud of Kris. He really did a great job. Way to go KRIS!!!!

I don’t think it’s cookie-cutter. All the songs are different. My favorite is The Truth and I Need to Know.

  • tripp_ncwy

Does anyone else get the sense that Kris is sending a message to a whole lotta people with Let It Rain? For me Alright with Me is by far the most original of all the tracks. It has a lot going on in a good way.

  • gossipgirl630

now if most of us like this album I wonder what MJ will think of it??

  • JOJOSIE

Twinkle, I’m with you. It’s just OK. I bought Cooks album last year and as much as I loved him on the show I didn’t care for the CD. I will not buy Kris’s but will download a few tunes. All the songs have a similar vibe and no real standouts. After hearing the whole thing I think LLWD was the best choice for the first single. Cooke-cutter, I say HELL YES!!

  • jill16

I really liked Written All Over My Face, Can’t Stay Away, and Bring It Back. I Need To Know, sounds like it’s on the wrong speed, or done in slow motion, ugh. I’m just not really fond of his voice, so maybe that’s it, idk.

All the other songs are just ok.

  • SarahP

aaarrrghhhhhh!!!! the links not working for me

    boooooo hooooooo :(

  • rayni

I Need to Know is damn epic. Killing me with beauty, rawness, simplicity. This is the best first idol album I have ever heard. I even like the Heartless version – it fits right in with the sound of the rest of the album. I am a Kris fan, but I am a much bigger fan of other idols and this album start to finish is the best one they’ve put out yet. Kris has much to be proud of.

  • tinawina

I think Can’t Stay Away is a single. After that, I’d go for one of the ballads.

When I hear “cookie cutter” I always think “music manufactured on an assembly line with no personality”, so I don’t really think of this as cookie cutter. To me it does very much sound like the musical persona he presented on Idol. I don’t think it sounds unique though. I think he fits into his genre nicely, he does not sound out of place among the rest of them. But has he invented something completely new here? No. But there are glimmers of his own stamp IMO, and I think he has his own style of singing. But perhaps that’s just me. Either way, this is a solid effort to my ears. I like it.

  • karrahbrooke

Am I the only Kris fan that wants to wait until they actually have the album to hear the songs? I’ll admit I watched the clips from the Dolphins game and listened to the snippets. But as far as hearing the whole album from start to finish, I wanna wait until I have the hard copy to jam to in my car to hear it for the first time. I did the same thing with Cook last year. Maybe I’m weird.

  • leeann
  • windmills

I’ve only listened to Alright With Me and Bring It Back and love them both! I’m listening to Before We Come Undone now. Not liking it as much as the other 2 but still better than I expected.

I’ll listen to the whole album in order later. So far so good!

I have a question: the ad for Kris’s album after his video mentioned Written All Over Your Face and The Truth. Does that mean those are the 2 songs they’re looking at to be the next singles? It wouldn’t surprise me but after listening to Alright With Me I’d love it if it got released. I hope Kris gets some of his cowrites released.

  • SarahP

    thanks sooooo much leeann

    off for my listen….excited :)

  • luci

Hope this link works/posts’“ been having difficulty with them lately. Also, the link allows you to download’“ so we are working on an honor system that you actually buy the album if your a fan

Cool thanks the link worked. Now I’m off to listen :-)

  • BeckyMD

I’m neutral in the cookie-cutter poll. I can hear Kris’ voice so it’s def not over-produced.

The whole album is really easy for the ears. I can have it played at the background and do other things the same time, without turning it up or down from song to song.

ETA: the only one song I need to click next is ‘alright with me’

I suggest you finish each song. Most of them pick-up towards the end.

I agree. Most the songs in this album have a catchy line.

  • SarahP

wow just listened to before we come undone!

i lovvvee this version much better than the live version…kris’s voice is super smooth…

  • mimi

I guess I don’t understand the meaning of “cookie cutter” then, because I think any album that runs the spectrum from Alright With Me to I Need to Know– with a lot of variance in between (Before We Come Undone, Red Guitar anyone?) is far from cookie cutter. I think the album overall is FANTASTIC!

  • BootStar

I don’t know what anybody means by “cookie cutter,” but I would say that in terms of lyrics some of the songs sound rather unoriginal, but overall there’s a nice mix of songs.

It’s definitely not over-produced, but given that Kris’s actual voice isn’t my favorite, I’m not sure what that means. I’ll need to listen to them all again when I have more time, but I’ve been primarily a fan of Kris’s musicianship and song selections. He made old songs fresh again for me and delivered them with an earnestness that a lot of Idol contestants lack.

His voice has always been his weakest link, however, and I wish I loved it more here. He isn’t a good enough singer to fool anybody if the songs aren’t good in and of themselves. That’s a blessing and a curse, I think.

My favorites are “Alright with Me” (why can’t songwriters spell that word correctly?) and “I Need To Know.”

  • will

I hear you karrahbrooke and I support that decision. I didn’t listen to any of the snippets, or the YouTubes from the tailgate party, because I didn’t want to have the experience of hearing the actual album spoiled. However, this stream is good enough quality for me to give it one good listen before I buy the album, but no more than one. Now if I could only find the time to really sit down and listen.

  • SarahP

maybe the cookie cutter has different shapes and sizes?

  • julieitis

I guess I don’t understand the meaning of ‘cookie cutter’ then, because I think any album that runs the spectrum from Alright With Me to I Need to Know’“ with a lot of variance in between (Before We Come Undone, Red Guitar anyone?) is far from cookie cutter. I think the album overall is FANTASTIC!

This is so true. I think it really covers quite a range, and yet it has a remarkable sense of cohesiveness. LOVE it!

  • SarahP

getting goosebumps listening to The Truth..wow kris’s voice is amazing at the starting lines

  • Sassycatz

I like “Before We Come Undone” the most. There are some interesting, artistic little places they took that song that made it unique. And I like the “Heartless” remix. The album is no way a dud but I find it very similar. Like it’s all on one plain. The whole album is kind of mid-tempo, with very few variations.

  • girlygirl

To me this is not a cookie cutter album. There are a variety of different types/styles of songs here, and Kris is able to put his own stamp and personality on them.

Is this album breaking any new musical ground? No — but so what? It’s still a strong debut.

  • WhisperFair

Count me among the teary eyed. I think Kris Allen has a beautiful, sensitive, vulnerable soul, and he has laid it open for everyone to see on this album.

  • kbr

I love it! I’m so happy that Kris was able to release really quality music on this album…definitely just my speed. His voice sounds amazing. There is a little bit for everyone in this album with the slower ballads, the funky high tempo songs. Yay Kris! Not sure what my favs are…I’m not into this version of Heartless, otherwise I really like all the others.
I think Kris could definitley have a hit with The Truth, Bring It Back, even Alright with Me if he wants to go uptempo again for the second single. I do love I Need to Know, but not really a song for radio. Overall this is a great album, hopefully Kris has some big hits from it!

  • SarahP

the buildup during i need to know is absolutely beautiful. it reminds me “happiness” of the frays new album. both gorgeous

loving the albummmm! very kris, and i think it will have a wide appeal!

  • IndyMuse

I feel like Kris validated my votes for him with this album. I have to say I was worried after LLWD and was not thrilled with some of his pre-Idol work, so I’ve held off buying anything. I think they did a great job with this and now I’ll likely buy either several tracks or the whole thing. Gotta wait till after Christmas, though. I am happy for him.

  • 12casey21

the buildup during i need to know is absolutely beautiful. it reminds me of the song “happiness” off the frays new album. both gorgeous songs with the similar angst to them.

So I thought I wouldn’t be able to hear this util I got home from work but turns out I can hear the link that was put out there for the international fans. Anyone else who is blocked that way and doesn’t want to wait it out should try that as well.

  • lucy

I guess I don’t understand the meaning of ‘cookie cutter’ then, because I think any album that runs the spectrum from Alright With Me to I Need to Know’“ with a lot of variance in between (Before We Come Undone, Red Guitar anyone?) is far from cookie cutter.

When people say “cookie cutter” I don’t think they mean that every song on the album in question sounds the same.

They mean that many of the individual songs there sound like somewhat generic and non-original versions of whatever genres they represent. You could have every single song on your album representing a completely different genre, from opera to hip hop, and still have a “cookie cutter” album if all the songs were fairly paint-by-numbers versions of their individual genres.

That said, I hear a lot of stuff on Kris’ album that doesn’t sound cookie cutter to me (and I’m hoping the same for Adam’s and Allison’s.). I hear Kris’ personality coming through on both the music and lyrics of a bunch of these songs.

Don’t forget we have two additional bonus tracks to enjoy from the Walmart Exclusive and iTunes preorder. Maybe they will throw the Mat Kearney track as a bonus for the loyal iTunes pass holders. I can wish can’t I.

  • sunchick

Hmmm. I love Bring It Back, the one with the heavy piano. For me, that’s the stand out track. I Need To Know is a great performance emmotionally but the vocals don’t match the passion. I definitely think the ballads work better than the uptempos, though, as a whole. There are times in the uptempos where the songs feel forced. I’m not getting the love for Alright With Me in particular. It’s kinda corny and amateurish sounding to me. After listening to the album, lyrically I was a little bored so I don’t think Kris is ever going to be one of my favorite singer/songwriters, but overall, not a bad first effort. Not amazing, not the best first album post AI, but a solid, respectable effort.

  • CathyMK

I love the album. My favorites are Before We Come Undone, Red Guitar, Is It Over, and Let It Rain, but I like every song. I feel the same sense of relief I felt last year after listening to DCTR for the first time. The album’s sound is consistent with his pre-Idol album and what he did on Idol, so I think most of his Idol fans will be happy. It also fits right in with this year’s new artists like The Script, Parachute, and Carolina Liar, but still sounds uniquely like Kris. I think it’ll do well in the long run.

  • jtoms

ya know, i gotta admit, i was skeptical about the whole rob thomas/fray direction because i was one of those that wanted more james morrison/acoustic soul guitar.

but this is a fantastic album, especially for a debut idol album thrown together under intense time pressure. color me surprised, and pleased for kris. great job!

let it rain is absolutely gorgeous! and alright with me is fun! i wasn’t planning on buying the whole album, but i think i’m gonna send a little cash towards mr. allen. i hope he does really, really well!

also this whole groundbreaking music talk? from american idol? really now?

Let me eat my hat and say WOW…this is a really good album. I love the Fray and this kind of takes me to that same happy place. Great job Kris. I think this album is full of hits. I haven’t skipped a song yet.

Sneaking listens to songs between proofreading (still) — I LOVE Bring it Back. Might have to listen to that one again. Beautiful song.

  • Balance

I was pretty indifferent about S8 but I was considereding buying Kris’ album just as a show of support because I felt like he’d been given such a raw deal. I really, really like this though. I’ll be buying it next week for sure…and actually playing it too!

Wow! Amazing album! Very personalized…very Kris! Well played, Mr. Allen.

  • auntieaimee

Bring It Back is my favorite by far. Gah. It’s like a punch to the heart. Still can’t stand this version of Heartless. The rest I liked in varying degrees (BWCU is great, Lifetime is meh). He has a lot to be proud of here. Overall, a really pleasant listen.

  • anovich

so far just not feeling Is It Over and love Red Guitar – so proud of him for that song in particular when you think about the fact that he wrote it by himself like a year before AI

  • Banished

Love all but Lifetime and Heartless. My favorite is I Need to Know because of the haunting sound and how emotional Kris sings here. Before We Come Undone very catchy. Love the diversity of the entire album. Many different sounds and tempos. Wish I didn’t pre-order the hard copy from Amazon because I want it NOW!!!!

  • movin2thabeet

Admittedly, I’ve never been a big Kris Allen fan. I think he’s a fine musician, but he just didn’t move me during the show. Now that I’ve listened to all the clips of his debut major label CD, I’m left with much the same impression. I do applaud the label for not over-producing the album. It has a nice clean sound that allows Kris’s mellow voice the room to be. But, overall the songs were just meh for me. I liked aspects of some of them, but then I lost interest, either because the songs chorus sounded like too many pop rock choruses, or the song just couldn’t hold my attention for long.

Kris has a nice smooth mellow voice which could cut both ways. Its working out great for Jack Johnson, Rob Thomas and John Mayer but there are a million guys with similar decent cool voices and vibes and only a couple will be able to have a successful musical career. Since IMO Kris’s voice doesn’t demand attention, the songs need to do that, and so far, they haven’t for me. But it could be that these songs need to age, like a fine wine. I’ll keep an open ear.

  • Mary102

Ok, in the middle of listening now. So far I LOVE Can’t Stay Away – catchy, funky, hooky – really good for a second single. Also really like Before We Come Undone more than when I heard it before – also a really strong song. The Truth is a little more generic, and I’m not really getting into it as much.

Back to listening to more…brb :-)

  • Eileen99

Let it Rain so needs to be the S9 boot song.

  • Ex-lurker

Argh! It’s so hard to pick a favorite. I guess Alright with Me. Really, except for the new Heartless, I love everything.

  • anovich

Some very pretty songs, very pleasant. It is definitely HAC, which is where I have always thought Kris would fit best. I still don’t think this has the variety or personality of Cook’s debut (partly, I know, because I just connected with DC more), but it seems to be a solid record and very Kris.

  • will

Don’t forget we have two additional bonus tracks to enjoy from the Walmart Exclusive and iTunes preorder.

Do you have to preorder from iTunes to get the bonus track? You don’t get it otherwise?

  • Observer

I really like Kris, but this album as a whole is such a downer. Almost all the songs except Live Like You’re Dying, are depressing, feel-bad, whiny songs, about relationships on the rocks, etc. Also there’s no variety and most of the songs sound pretty much the same. When I finally got to Heartless at the end, it reminded me what I liked so much about Kris and what the other songs (except LLYD) lack.

I do think “I Need to Know” would make a perfect background song on “Grey’s Anatomy.”

I just don’t understand what they were thinking when they put this album together for him. It’s just plain boring — or maybe the problem is hearing them altogether at one time.

  • justic

solid effort. it’s authentic, not over produced, put’s the spotlight on the artist. it’s very much HIM and that’s what’s important.
unfortunately that wasn’t the case for last year’s winner or runner-up so good for kris.

  • TwigLA

I am on my second listen now. THe first listen was with my eyes closed. Second while reading posts here.

I LOVE it!!!!! This is definitely a Kris Allen album from start to finish. It flows effortlessly from song to song and there is a cohesiveness and somewhat of a story line going on. His voice is gorgeous and lots of interesting arrangements.

The Red Guitar is such an awesome story and the ending of the song (is that a cello?) is … it’s just all sorts of cool.

I cannot pick a favourite at all, there are too many that I love. I’d pick ‘Lifetime’ as the least. I even like this new version of ‘Heartless’ and that surprises me.

If anyone is judging this album on the snippets they heard, they are really cheating themselves. This album has win all over it. I am so happy I took the risk and trusted him by buying the album before it was finished. Now I’ve decided I need to buy a regular CD for my car. My burns just will not satisfy me.

    Very well done, Kris!

  • carol522

Love Heartless! The entire CD is quite good.

  • babybelle32

This is just amazing, each song fits Kris so well. I’m glad that the album isn’t overproduced, and that these songs almost sound like a continuation of some of the song on Kris’ Brand New Shoes album.

“Can’t Stay Away” is my current favorite, but I love how emotionally charged “I Need to Know,” “Is it Over” and even “Let It Rain” are. All three of those songs are incredible, and at least two of them need to be released as singles, after “Can’t Stay Away.”

I love the attention that was paid to the lyrics, and I also love the instrumentation, that fits Kris so well. The different styles of the songs just work so well, and reflect the different sides of Kris that we saw during the season. This album has so much cross over appeal, which is such a boon for Kris and for Jive.

  • babybelle32

So true. I teared up while listening to this song and to “I Need to Know.” I think Kris was going through a lot when he wrote both of these songs.

  • Mtlfan

I’m really impressed that they managed to produce such a quality album in a so short amount of time. My less favorite so far is Lifetime after one listen

  • mmb

You hit the nail on the head for me. I’ve been listening at work, and while I have never been a huge Kris fan I did download a few of his tunes during the season (ANS and Heartless), and figured that there would be a handful of songs off his album that i would like and download. But his album is not holding my attention at all. Sometimes it is the song that I think is meh, sometimes the song is ok but the singing is just not strong enough. I don’t deny that this is a solid effort by Kris and that his fans will like it (the most important thing)…I just do not know why I cannot get into him at all. Oh well.

  • becausehelives

Listened to the album. I think bring it back is the best, and LLWD was the best choice for a single becos they are mostly slow songs but definitely all kris, singer/songwriterish.

I wonder what the creative differences he said he had with his label was abt?. 9 songs he co-wrote made the album and they sound like what u wld expect from him. it seems he put out the album he wanted unless he had a totally different direction in mind?. maybe more rock?.
otherwise i think his fans will be happy with this. no one will accuse him of selling out, that’s for sure.

  • summersnow

Okay, I’ve finished listening to the album and I’ve to say that this is an EPIC album. Even for my favorite artists’ albums, there are bound to be filler songs in them. But it seems like all the songs on this album can be potential radio-hit. There’s a different variety of songs such as the slow to mid-tempo, emotional ballads as well as the upbeat, catchy tunes to suit everyone’s taste. The most important thing is that the lyrics in the songs are really nicely-written and meaningful. When I listen to songs, I don’t just go for those that are catchy but also those that have meaningful lyrics. Kris can definitely be proud of this high quality production.

  • ptslittlecomment

I think its a very good effort by Kris. I really liked most of the songs (didn’t dislike any) although I had to make myself concetrate on some of them as they started to bleed into one another. It isn’t overproduced and it certainly sounds like Kris. I think it probably will be successful with the HAC crowd. But I also think Alright with Me could be a country crossover.

  • tripp_ncwy

Do you have to preorder from iTunes to get the bonus track? You don’t get it otherwise?

Yes you will have to preorder to get the bonus unless its changed. There was a lot of confusion if the pass would get you the bonus track but the last I heard, it did not.

iTunes bonus – From the Ashes (Kris co-write)
Walmart bonus – Send Me All Your Angels (Daughtry & Kris co-write)

  • SarahP

just finished listening to the album.

i think all the hard work i’ve done last few months tirelessly supporting kris has paid off! (well since i dont live in US i havent voted for him so that support doesnt count).

i LOVED the album. all of the songs showed a lot of character and most of them being co-written by him adds to the fact that these are not just some songs given on a platter to the singer to be sung with the perfect pitch or voice but is more of a story and is an insight into the singer, his aspirations, his experiences and his feelings.

most of the songs have a story behind it and for that reason alone, i loved Let It Rain most of all. its really inspiring to me cos the fact that kris was not only able to overcome all the obstacles during the idol journey, him being the underdog and all but that he is living his dream and is singing a damn good song about it.

    inspirational song: Let It Rain

happy go lucky singalong song: Alright with me

to listen on repeat on a rainy day with a mug of coffee: bring it back

when having friends over for brunch: written all over my face, cant stay away, before we come undone and red guitar

to listen after a tiring day: is it over

personal favourite which will go down on my all-time favourite list: i need to know

now that my perfect evening is over, i need to get some sleep. what a monday!

  • will

Thanks tripp_ncwy. I guess I’ll be preordering. I was going to wait until the 17th.

  • SarahP

    .

thanks summersnow! exaactly my feelings. listen to the lyrics of I Need To Know and its really haunting…

  • carmine2008

Nice recap SarahP. Let it Rain is my fave as well.

  • summersnow

Oh I forgot to add that unlike what others have felt, I thought the new Heartless is amazing. Of course, nothing will top his acoustic performance in AI but this version is better than the AI studio version. The other version is a bit slow but still fine. This new version is closer to the one he did on tour and is more energetic. It captures that angsty emotion that is present in his acoustic one. And yup, quoting Randy Jackson: It’s better than Kanye’s and Fray’s versions!

  • Mary102

Ok, after listening to the whole album favs are easily:

    1. Can’t Stay Away
    2. Is It over
    3. Before We Come Undone
    4. Red Guitar
    5. I Need to Know (uber angsty, oh, baby)

Least favs (a little too generic for me):

    1. Lifetime (though it gets props for mentioning Poker Face at the beginning and making me think of Kris covering Lady Gaga :-))
    2. The Truth

All the rest are good, falling somewhere in the middle.

  • lucy

Do you have to preorder from iTunes to get the bonus track? You don’t get it otherwise?

The good news is that most bonus tracks seem eventually to migrate into the “songs everybody can buy” category. Sometimes takes quite a while, though.

  • dhunken

AWESOME! Very very happy with this album. The snippets in no way did it justice. I find that songs I was not so thrilled about with the snippets turn out to be some of my favorites. Bring it Back I think will be the big hit from the Album. It is the song that upon listening to all the songs the first time through (and I am up to #5 run through) was the one I was remembering right away and humming and continue too. (Even over LLWD and I know that whole song). MY favorites are: Bring it Back, Can’t stay Away, Written all Over my Face, Lifetime (Kris’s Pokerface tee hee), Let it Rain, and Red Guitar. My least favorites (but still like them) are Heartless and All Right with Me. Great Great Job Kris.

  • Mary102

And I’m also liking this version of Heartless – it’s a new spin on it, which is great since we’ve already heard numerous versions of the more stripped down and rocked out versions on AI and then on the tour.

  • babybelle32

I wonder if those who didn’t watch AI will realize how much these songs represent who Kris is, and that they are like reading his diary. I think I’m to close to the situation to know for sure, but I think that when an artist music is so personalized, like these songs are, that people feel the music more. Yes, songs that are more about the beat than the lyrics are populating radio right now, but I think those lyric centered songs that break through do so because people can relate to what’s being said, this is one of the reasons why Taylor Swift’s songs are so popular.

These songs can fit into any genre, even country, mainly because the lyrics are so heartfelt.

  • redalert

I’m on Written All Over My Face now (listening in order).

Worst song so far: Can’t Stay Away… Uggh! No no no! It’s very Matchbox 20/Maroon 5.

OMG OMG OMG the ooohh HOOOhhooo as backdrop vocals for Written All Over My Face killed me… Gahhhh! That’s it Kris!! I’m accusing you of murder. Hahahaa. Ooohhh HOooHOO

  • Mary102

Bring it Back so needs to be featured in a Grey’s Anatomy closing scene soon :-) LOL.

  • lucy

Worst song so far: Can’t Stay Away’ ¦ Uggh! No no no! It’s very Matchbox 20/Maroon 5.

For me, too. This is one that does sound awfully “cookie cutter.” ….

However, what do I know? Virtually everything on Daughtry’s first album sounded cookie cutter to me … and it turned out that being cookie cutter made it a big hit.

  • Eileen99

I love this Heartless as well – it’s just enough different from his other versions (show, studio recording, and tour) to interest me. Love the different things he does with his vocals throughout it.

  • redalert

Bring It Back is VERRRRRRRRRRYYY OneRepublic / The Fray sounding. I could’ve sworn this was written by Ryan Tedder if I didn’t know who it was from really.

  • summersnow

Let it Rain so needs to be the S9 boot song.

lol I don’t think it will qualify cos there is no “Home” in the title or lyrics. But I really, really like the lyrics of this song cos it’s like a (pardon my language) F*U song to the naysayers, AI producers and Simon Cowell.

  • redalert

WOWWWW. Red Guitar sounds to be the most sincere Kris cut so far. Pre-Idol written yes? I think that’s why. (Remember: Listening in order)…

This album is just too sexy with the exception of Can’t Stay Away. I’ll jump off a cliff if this is the second single.

  • lifeisgood

Love the album – such a sexy voice.

LOVE Before We Come Undone, I Need To Know, The Truth, Bring It Back, Is It Over, Let It Rain, Lifetime, and Can’t Stay Away. Still like LLWD. From the snippets I wasn’t sure about Alright With Me or Written All Over My Face but now that I’ve heard the whole songs I like both of them.

My least favorite I suppose would be Red Guitar.

I really like the more haunting type arrangement for Heartless.

  • Trina

This is a really nice album. Some fun catchy songs, some beautiful ballads and it seems to be a very good representation of who Kris is as an artist. I think for the most part it’s real strength will be HAC but I can see some songs doing pretty decently on pop. Let It Rain is probably my favorite, really gorgeous. I like the new Heartless a lot too. I hope 19/Jive continue to do right by Kris because there’s so much potential in him.

  • SarahP

ok i cant get to sleep with Let It Rain going on repeat in my head so let me try to write the lyrics to it now…

so many things are trying to keep me
and so many voices trying to reach me
to tell me that this is not the way
to tell me that this is my mistake

    chorus:
oh let the rain keep falling down
cos it wont stop me from getting where i’m bound
maybe i’m crazy, maybe its too late
    but i’m gonna make it
    forget what the sky says
so ohhh let it rain. let it rain

i know that this is not the way
to even imagine it would be
oh but nothing you say is gonna stop me (stop me)
no matter the way that you bring (yeah) (??)

    chorus

    let it rain x 2

so many things are trying to keep me
mmmm so many voices trying to reach me

    chorus

    let it rain x 4

so many things are trying to keep me

  • redalert

Is It Over sounds good to be a SYTYCD goodbye song. Not sure for Idol.

    OMG OMG OMG OMG waitttt

Let It Rain is my favorite so farrrrrr. It’s so authentic Kris, I’m getting a bit teary eyed.

  • TwigLA

Speaking of Simon Cowell, he (and Ryan) are the ones I want to watch eat crow for their rude comments after Kris won.

  • Mary102

This album is just too sexy with the exception of Can’t Stay Away. I’ll jump off a cliff if this is the second single.

LOL – not sure how this will break down by demographic, but it’s interesting to note that as an Adam fan first and foremost, Can’t Stay Away was immediately one of my fav Kris songs – I like the funk sound to it (though I admit it is a little Maroon 5-ish). The ones I don’t like as much are the ones that are a little too Fray/John Mayer – which is a kind of music I’m just not that into in general.

  • redalert

OMFFFFGGGG!! Wait a minute. Scratch that. Alright With Me is my favorite nowww.

I can NOT believe this is an upbeat song…. SO SO SO SO COOL!

    It’s allright, allright with me…
    It’s allright, allright with me…
    It’s allright, allright with me…

  • SarahP

i agree with whoever said let it rain needs to be the boot song.

can we do a vote here? who wants let it rain to be the boot song for s9?

ok its goodnight for..happy kris allen’s-album-streaming-in-AOL day :)

  • didilynn

Very good album! My fav is Let It Rain also, and I do like the changes to Heartless. Congratulations Kris!

  • rblaha1234

I just listened to this c d I think it is a BIG FAT EPIC FAIL.
I do not like it. It just is not my type of music. It sounds just the same old sound that is out there today.

  • summersnow

Speaking of Simon Cowell, he (and Ryan) are the ones I want to watch eat crow for their rude comments after Kris won.

Simon is all for $$$, which is why he has tried to run a few buses over Kris during the show but at least he’s not a hypocrite like Ryan Seacrest. I just dun understand Ryan. He was so super nice to Kris during the show but after the finale, he has been simply acting like a douche to Kris on his radio show. He’s on my blacklist now:/

  • anovich

I am totally in love with Let It Rain – it really is the big F*** U song to the Idol PTB (not Jive since they aren’t involved in the actual show). Who were his co-writers on that song? B/c that’s definitely someone that totally got Kris and what he’d been through to get to even make this album.

  • redalert

Uggh no. I Need To Know is to mellow… This song has to grow on me. It’s kind of has an Evanescence feel to it.

Edit: NVM. The I Need To Know howls by Kris was just… umm… kick awesome?

  • Glamour

I just listened to this, not expecting much, but I was very pleasantly surprised. It has a very John Mayer/Jason Mraz feel to it. Love “I Need To Know” – what a lovely, haunting song.

Will definitely buy this! Great job Kris and his team!

  • Lulu2

Arrangement and instrumentation is everything. I think that the arrangements are too ordinary to push the songs past okay or good. I think the best song is “I Need to Know” because the instrumentation is spare and more suited to the tone of the song. Some of the songs start out promising, but then the instruments kick in and ruin them. The album cover is great though. You could frame that thing.

  • evanjane

This kid is good. Damn good! This album will be a critical success. From a lifetime of following music, this kid has just got it. Need to Know kills me. Amazing stuff!

  • mandalay

I love it. Just the kind of album I was hoping for. I’m already singing along to several of the songs. Yay Kris.

  • savgal

Listened to the whole album while cleaning my house, and LOVED it. Have to say “It’s Alright With Me” really got my attention because the rhythm and simplicity were so dang catchy. “I Need to Know” got me choked up for some reason. Very, very good first album — I put it right up there with Daughtry’s debut, as far as quality and meeting the expectations of how they presented themselves musically on the show. In fact, I may even give it a smidge over Daughtry’s. Cannot wait to actually see Kris, Cale & company performing these somewhere — at the very least on TV. Had no idea Kris had so many shades/levels to his voice; he says he can’t act, but his voice sure can. Boy gave 110% of himself and I dearly hope and pray it is well-received.

  • redalert

    Allright after the first listen…

    STAND OUTS:
    LLWD (duh!)
    Red Guitar
    Alright With Me
    Red Guitar
    Let It Rain

    MEH:
    Lifetime
    Can’t Stay Away

After the best Mad Men ever last night, I am on a total high listening to Kris’s lovely album. I love it! I honestly and completely love it.

So excited to actually get my hands on the physical cd to stick it in my car and get the downloads for my iPod. It’s SO much better than the snippets, I think. I even find myself liking Lifetime and this Heartless, which I would never have guessed based on the snippets.

Whew. What a relief, to have the Idol I liked turn out a really excellent cd start to finish, and not have to be hitting the FF button through the Light Ons and the Mr. Sensitives and everything on Elliott’s cd except Moving On and WFY. I think those are the only two Idol cds I’ve bought, and I like this one way better if I’m honest. (Sorry, E and DC. Still love you. It’s just too much of your albums I didn’t feel fit me all that well.)

I haven’t got a clue what should be the next single from this cd. I could see almost everything as a single.

  • tripp_ncwy

Over on ontd_ai they have a video of Kris doing a chat last night with them after his show. One snippet I caught was that the Mat Kearney song is called “On Top of the World”. On a funny note, Kris’s mom so running things in the Kris camp. When she says it’s time to leave, she rounds them all up quick and pushes them to the exit.

  • joeyd3164

    It’s OK ..

Has a few songs I could see on pop radio .. I don’t foresee him selling very well.

  • Truthiness

I really liked most of the songs (didn’t dislike any) although I had to make myself concetrate on some of them as they started to bleed into one another.

This is pretty me. I don’t dislike any of the songs, but I started out liking the album a lot more than I did by the middle, because they started all sounding very similiar. I think I’m going to need to go back and listen to these songs at different times so I can concentrate on them more.

I am SUPER glad that they sound much better than the snippets. Phew! There is still a sort of sameness that I got from both times, but there the songs don’t annoy me as much. The voice with that ‘whine,’ is a bit much listening to all of them at once, but again, I’ll just make sure and go back and listen to them more separately.

So not sure which ones are my favourites right now, but least faves are “Lifetime,” “Let It Rain,” and “The Truth,” with “Lifetime,” definitely my least overall.

I would say “Before We Come Undone,” and “Written All Over My Face,” are my favourites, still like the vibe of “Can’t Stay Away,” I know, Maroon5, but I can enjoy a song or two of theirs.

Don’t like “Red Guitar,” as much as I thought I would. Definitely middle of the pack. Too predictable.

I will go against the grain and prefer “I Need To Know,” to “Bring It Back,” for the ballads, INK is simpler and I like. One of my problems with the album is the jangley feel/sound I get from most of the songs, but there isn’t that with this song. “I Need To Know,” is definitely among favourites.

Had been liking the snippet of “Heartless,” but not so fond of the whole song, definitely his trying to be funk/”rhythm” ish feel and I’m just feeling it as being terrible impressive him. On the other hand at least it doesn’t bleed into the other songs.

So yep, “I Need To Know,” is my favourite right now. I’ve decided. ;)

Solid work by Kris and seems to be very him. I there are definitely some songs that could be hits on this and yes, I can totally see BIB playing on a TV show. I think this is really good for a first post AI album.

Lastly, not sure that I would buy any of these tracks if I weren’t interested in supporting Kris. “I Need To Know,” yes, others? hmmm. Probably not. I’d be okay with listening to them on the radio, but I would have no desire to put them on my iPod.

  • smartcookie

Oh, and “Is It Over” kind of reminds me of Billy Vera and the Beaters’ “At This Moment,” which was a huge hit in the 80s. Hoping Kris can have that kind of humungous hit. Or that Kris would bring back “At This Moment.” Just a weird thought that occurred to me during “Is It Over”…

  • Mary102

After the best Mad Men ever last night

Ok, OT – but don’t rub it in ;-) I’m two weeks behind on Mad Men, and SOO need to watch it tonight!

Ok, back to Kris – yay, Kris!

Alright With Me is the song that stuck on me the most. I think this is the song that can make it o radioplay the most? No?

  • Banished

Can’t wait to hear MJ’s impressions. The “other” blogger has juvenile, two sentence impressions that led me to believe he barely listened to each track before cracking off hurried comments. Every time I listen, I like them more. Bring it Back is starting to grow on me as another single..piano great in the melody. Can see most of these as potential singles. I hope Kris gets a chance with radio play..

  • Mary102

Truthiness - I tend to agree with a lot of your take on it too. As someone who is not wholly into the kind of music Kris is producing (just not my thang), I think I like a lot of these songs more so just because of knowing and supporting Kris from the show – without that added emotional connection to him, I think I’d be much more like “eh, ok, it’s just a’ight for me”.

But I definitely have a bit of that “each of these songs blending together” vibe, especially among my least favs on the album (and I’m completely in agreement that Lifetime is probably the weakest song, just way too generic).

Some more instrumentation variety could have helped a bit, but in general, Kris should count this as a major triumph, because this album sounds LEAGUES better than most AI first albums (I think it is more interesting and diverse than David Cook’s for instance), and imo most albums, AI or otherwise, tend to have too many songs that sound exactly the same, anyways.

  • isisdagmar

Can’t wait to hear MJ’s impressions. The ‘other’ blogger has juvenile, two sentence impressions

    What “other” blogger?

This seems to be a popular choice but I think “I Need to Know” is my favorite. I’m enjoying Written All Over My Face too right now.

  • colette

Uh oh. “It’s Alright” is lodging in my brain now, like a nut in a squirrel’s cheek.

And just when I was finally able to get through the day without humming Live Like We’re Dying a hundred times!

The boy knows his hooks. And as with a lot of Kris music, some of these songs sneak up on you after repeated listening rather than swooping you up immediately.

I second the comments that the arrangements are sometimes way overloaded with noise, and the songs are a grab-bag running from great to meh. I’d have love to see more covers, but after the storm of abuse Kris endured for covering The Fray tune, I can understand why he rushed out a lot of original stuff.

I have no clue whatsoever how this album will do. And I miss the more spare, indy Kris, who I love more I confess than the Maroony pop-rocker.

But this is a skilled piece of work for a freshman release, and it doesn’t sound like any other Idol’s output. I’m crossing my fingers that it does well, because I’m eager to hear album #2….

  • AZIdolFan

loved the album!!! will have hac hits and maybe a couple of top 40 but no top 40 1′s.

my favorites were: llwd, before we come undone, the truth, is it over, let it rain, i need to know and heartless.

liked the rest. there is usually one song that i don’t like and skip. this album doesn’t have a skip over song. you can hear his beautiful voice. it’s not overproduced. great album! can’t wait to own it!

  • Banished

Maybe I expected too much from his album being the AI winner. I’ll just wait for them to play it on the radio.

  • Sassycatz

(I think it is more interesting and diverse than David Cook’s for instance),

That I don’t agree with. DC’s had ballads, mid-tempos, harder driving/faster beat. It really had some diversity without being all over the place.

Think about a Kris Allen concert. Which one of these are they going to rock out with … or aren’t they?

  • isisdagmar

Alright With Me is the song that stuck on me the most. I think this is the song that can make it o radioplay the most? No?

That’s what I am struggling a bit with right now. I still say Can’t Stay Away has the poppiest sound of what’s left – its the closest thing to a hooky chorus for me. I could kinda see Written All Over My Face too. Maybe. Its a good album, but not a pop radio album to me, if that makes sense. I do think its has HAC hits on it though… and I do think that Christian radio move could be great for him. I wish rock radio would give him a chance but its not likely. I really think some of these fit. LLWD was definitely the right first single IMO.

and imo most albums, AI or otherwise, tend to have too many songs that sound exactly the same, anyways.

I TOTALLY agree with this. I am a music junkie, and yea, most albums are just alright. And lots of the songs sound similar, even for people trumpeted for their “originality” and “creativity”. I do think Idols get judged too harshly in that regard.

  • redalert

Well, ymmv. Plus, you can have songs of varying tempos, and that doesn’t necessarily mean they all sound completely different.

  • summersnow

I hope that Kris would have a music video for Let It Rain. He could just stand in the rain with his hands outstretched, totally drenched in his white shirt lol.

Btw, there’s link for a acoustic version of Let It Rain (audio recording only) from the Vineyard event:
It was said that he was the only performer who got a standing ovation after performing this.

  • Q3

I like the whole songs a lot better than the 30 second samples. A few of the songs blended together a bit for me and weren’t very memorable, but really overall a nice surprise. And IMO a couple of these would have been stronger lead singles than LLWD — so I hope that Jive releases a second Kris single early next year.

(I think it is more interesting and diverse than David Cook’s for instance),

Um, I’m not a big Cook fan, but have to say that Cook’s album was more diverse and more interesting.

  • BeckyMD

Can’t Stay Away sounds like a country song. Not in a bad way.

  • summersnow

Alright With Me is the song that stuck on me the most. I think this is the song that can make it o radioplay the most? No?

Totally agree! It’s like the catchiest song on the whole album, even more so than Can’t Stay Away. Atually, I prefer this than CSA. It has that happy, uplifting feel after listening and like what someone said earlier a bit of country and a bit of folksy pop to me as well.

  • Truthiness

Some more instrumentation variety could have helped a bit, but in general, Kris should count this as a major triumph, because this album sounds LEAGUES better than most AI first albums (I think it is more interesting and diverse than David Cook’s for instance), and imo most albums, AI or otherwise, tend to have too many songs that sound exactly the same, anyways.

You’re right about most albums having songs that are similiar sounding, I guess part of the trick for me is finding a sound I like. So that if the sound is repeated, than I won’t mind. But yes, it’s the instrumentation similiarities that are part of the problem for me.

But yes, I think this is a more solid album for me than David Cook’s last year and I like more stuff off of it.

I think despite my personally probably never listening to all, but one, maybe two songs on my iPod, I think it’s a solid, good album for it’s genre. And I think given that it’s a post AI first album with all it’s attendent time and management issues, I think pretty darn good.

  • mysan

I see Kris playing the piano while singing ‘I Need To Know’ during his tour. That would be awesome!!!

  • sr4mjc

I like Let it Rain, I might buy that one as a single.

  • WeeklySpins

This album is great! Possibly the best Idol debut that I can remember.

    My favs are:
    1. Written All Over My Face
    2. I Need To Know
    3. Alright With Me
    4. Before We Come Undone
    5. Can’t Stay Away
    6. Bring It Back
    7. The Truth
    8. Red Guitar
    9. Lifetime
    10. Let It Rain
    11. Is It Over

But I can honestly say I don’t dislike one song on this album. I’m really surprised at this album. I was not expecting the songs to be this good and heartfelt/heartwrenching.

  • summersnow

Can’t Stay Away sounds like a country song.

Really? I dun listen to country at all but CSA doesn’t sound country to me. It’s more Maroon 5 and Gavin Degraw kinda style.

  • babybelle32

The Kings of Leon “Use Somebody” has a similar vibe as some of Kris’ songs, and that song has been the biggest pop hit in the country for a couple of months. Several of the songs, including Bring it Back, sound similar to what The Fray has released, and pop radio loves them, just like they love Daughtry and Nickelback. I will admit that Kris needs to establish himself with songs like LLWD and probably CSA first, before pop stations will give him a chance, but I think he’s on the right track for that to happen.

I think that pop stations love the groups that I mentioned because the songs are actually about something, and the chorus are catchy, even though the verses may be more suited for HAC and rock stations. I think that Kris has a chance of seeing the same type of pop love that these acts are seeing.

I posted Slezak’s songlist with all the writers and producers on the first comments page.

I still don’t get why LLWYD was released first. Written all Over My Face sounds like LLWYD.

I really hate this version of Heartless. The “oh” annoys the hell out of me. The mood of the song is ruined by this upbeat version.

The guitar intro on Before we Come Undone sounds like Kings of Leon. I really like this song it’s my favorite.

Overall the album is not my style of music but I will buy Before We and Can’t Stay Away as singles.

  • jtoms

kris’ style is never going to be consistently tailored towards pop radio. other artists of his ilk that have been mentioned mayer, mraz, thomas, degraw, morrison, etc. are very much Hot AC artists. you get the occasional “i’m yours” or “i don’t wanna be” that become a big hit on POP, but for the most part that’s not where they’re gonna get the most airplay. if you look at the most successful one of them all, john mayer, his CHR record is pretty unremarkable, but he does well in AAA and AC formats.

  • gabilan

    Mary102:

This album is just too sexy with the exception of Can’t Stay Away. I’ll jump off a cliff if this is the second single.

LOL ‘“ not sure how this will break down by demographic, but it’s interesting to note that as an Adam fan first and foremost, Can’t Stay Away was immediately one of my fav Kris songs ‘“ I like the funk sound to it (though I admit it is a little Maroon 5-ish). The ones I don’t like as much are the ones that are a little too Fray/John Mayer ‘“

Are you me? I love Can’t Stay Away – bring on the funk! And the only way I like John Mayer is in his ultra-bluesy mode. Saw him on Austin City Limits and he was fantastic. But his CD gets no plays in my iTunes.

My favorites on Kris’ CD (after 2-3 listens) besides CSA are:

Is It Over – the opening is wonderful
both Script-penned songs (especially the rhythms in WAOMF)
Bring It Back – nice song, but not wild about the vocal
Alright With Me – it’s bouncy, like Kris!
Let It Rain – nice melody on this

Those don’t really take lyrics into consideration because if I don’t like a song musically/vocally first, even the best lyrics won’t help.
The rest of the songs range from okay to slit-my-wrist (Lifetime and I Need to Know).

It would be interesting to compare song rankings between say Kris, Adam, and Cook fans to see if reactions have any pattern.

  • tinawina

Several of the songs, including Bring it Back, sound similar to what The Fray has released, and pop radio loves them, just like they love Daughtry and Nickelback.

Well actually, they USED to love those guys, but in the past year and change not so much. That’s the problem. Used to be Top 40 would play all these people’s singles, now they are lucky if they get one pop hit per album. The jury is even out for Kinds Of Leon… they had one monster hit on the format, now lets see if pop will embrace a followup to the same degree. Right now it is very hard to get a pop hit for a rock act outside that initial first single that gets the big push.

I think these are great songs, especially Alright With Me that was mentioned upthread, but I can’t imagine most of these fitting in with the current CHR playlists. Unless radio makes a shift while he’s still releasing singles. That would be quite cool, because I’d like my radio more if it were playing songs like this.

I don’t think he sounds very much like Kings Of Leon at all here, BTW.

  • mgk

I think I Need To Know is my favorite song. I’m actually liking the new Heartless too.

Kris’ voice has been sounding different to me lately though. Kris has a whine to his voice that I don’t remember from AI. I just pulled his Falling Slowly up on my iTunes, and I don’t hear it there. It’s some sort of tic that he’s picked up and I hope he chills on it a little.

Okay, I just heard the whole thing and I gotta say, this album thoroughly meets my expectations. I think Kris really put a lot of himself vocally in some of these songs; I can hear how strong his voice has become in songs like “The Truth” and “Bring It Back”.

I don’t really have a favorite, every song has its own charm.

“Before We Come Undone” sounds just as good as the live version, although I do think BWCU and CSA are much much better live. Kris brings an awesome kind of energy to these two songs live that enhances the songs. I was surprised that I didn’t pay as much attention to CSA on the record. I don’t know if it’s because I’ve heard it before, but I just thought all the other songs sounded amazing as well.

“Written All Over My Face” sounds really good, but I like the changes Kris and the band made to the live version that brought more intensity, especially towards the end of the song.

“The Truth” – very nice, I like the orchestra in the chorus; it brings a sophistication to the song. I can totally hear this thing on the radio. Wouldn’t be surprised if it ended up as the next single.

“Bring It Back” – This was one of my least favorites among the 30-second snippets, but it’s emerged as the frontrunners on this CD. The piano intro is so pretty! The bass line in the chorus is also really cool. The bridge of this song is A++++, and just knowing that Kris and Eg White cut this song in 30 minutes makes this song even MORE impressive.

Okay, “Red Guitar” is my favorite. I don’t know if it’s because it’s the only song penned by Kris entirely and it was written before Idol, and it’s very personal to Kris, but the melody is just so lovely, and the intro is cool. Okay, yeah, I think this is definitely my favorite. Kris’s vocals just spill over on the lyrics and it’s like a series of massages LOL I don’t know why, but that’s how I felt the song was like. And when he sings “it’s been through hell” – super sexy! Also, I love love love the instrumental part of this song! Glad Mike Flynn and co. didn’t cut all of it. You know, on second listen this song reminds me of U2′s “With or Without You”.

“Is It Over” – Okay, the more highbrow people will LOVE this. Kris’s vocals on this are amazing – very soulful, bluesy, definitely has that John Mayer sort of feel. And when Kris sings the line “crawl on my knees” I’m not gonna lie it just does things to me LOLOLOL This song has a “Be My Lady” feel from Kris’s “Brand New Shoes”, which I love.

“Let It Rain” – definitely radio-friendly; wouldn’t be surprised if this was picked to be the homecoming or elimination song on SYTYCD or Idol next season. And the pretty falsetto at the end! Whew. Kris is really showing off his vocals on this record!

“Alright With Me” – this song, just from the intro, you know it’s got that charm and that IT. If you’re not swaying or bopping your head to this song, there’s something wrong with you. I love it! It’s one of my favorites! It’s so fun and kind of gives an image of Kris as a troubadour serenading some ladies. This song is so swoon-worthy! I love the part where he sings “I”m knockin’ on your door, baby, baby please…” wow. I think this is going to be an awesome song to be performed live!

“Lifetime” is actually really good. It was my least favorite from the entire album during the snippets but hearing the whole song really helps it. You can definitely hear the influence from Jonathan Foreman of Switchfoot. The guitar in this song is reminiscent of “Dare You To Move”‘s guitar work.

“I Need to Know” – this song just about killed me. I LOVE the build-up of the song, from really raw and vulnerable to gathering steam and then to a whoosh of Kris’s strong vocals towards the end. Impressive! Definitely one of my favorites. This song reminds me of Damien Rice’s “The Blower’s Daughter”, and a little bit of Chris Garneau meets The Fray. Good stuff!

“HEartless” I didn’t think I would like, but it actually sounds really cool! I kinda wish Kris kept the same intro he usually does with “Heartless” – the really drawn out way of singing it, but that’s OK.

Whew! That’s my take on it! I”m really happy with the album and can’t wait to get it on my iPod!

  • IdolThoughts

I don’t think he sounds very much like Kings Of Leon at all here, BTW.

I agree. NOTHING resembles Caleb’s warbling rock sex godliness in my opinion either. Just no. But I do like Kris’ album and look forward to hearing it on Grey’s Anatomy sometime soon.

  • Starr

Holy freakin’ Batman the build-up on “I Need to Know” is crazy good, and Kris’s vocals are just intense. So proud of him! Is it wrong that I’m crying right now? LOL

  • Truthiness

I don’t think he sounds very much like Kings Of Leon at all here, BTW

Yeah, not seeing that comparison either.

Well the AI studios were mostly not good to me, generic and kind of cheap sounding. If that makes sense.

But yeah, I think he has put a bit more whine into his voice than was on the show. I think it was on tour, especially for Heartless. But I stopped listening to Heartless very soon into the tour. I would have to go back and listen to his live stuff, but I don’t remember it being on the show during his live performances. Hmmm. I’m kind of intrigued now.

  • Chicagolaw

David Cook’s CD ranged from BarBaSol to Permanent. It was incredibly diverse. This album just isn’t. Which is fine. There are some beautiful songs on here, but it stays in roughly the same vein throughout. Cook is a harder rocker, more similar to Kings of Leon, and he struggled to get anything to chart in CHR (of course, the choice of singles didn’t really help). I could be wrong, but this seems to be very much a soft rock album. I can see it doing well in AC/HAC/maybe Country cross-over.

  • BeckyMD

to the people who have listened to the whole album: Do you think people would consider it ‘cookie cutter’ ?? my opinion: i haven’t listened to the whole thing but so far I don’t think it is. Anyone agree with me??

Definitely not cookie-cutter! Lyric-wise, just look at the angsty “Before We Come Undone”, really good stuff. The melody in “Is It Over”, with the bluesy feel, definitely not cookie-cutter. “I Need to Know” is definitely nothing traditional. “Alright With Me” is the one that is the most surprising, I think, that people will find on this album. I can’t quite place the sound of it, but the production in it is very good! I think critics would be impressed!

  • sunny2

I love this album. It’s so nice to hear the entire songs. I think the problem with the 30 sec snippets, is that you don’t hear the emotion in Kris’ voice, which is so amazing and so soothing. I’m undergoing renovations and have been very stressed, but Kris’ voice just lifts that stress away.

I hope this album is succcess, because I need more Kris albums in the future.

  • Chicagolaw

Sorry, I can’t get the edit function to work or I would have just included this in my post.

Tinawina, you make a great point. CHR continues to evolve—not much Daughtry anymore, not much John Mayer, etc. You really have to be electropop/dance/rap or Disney or chart consistently.

    I’m just a boy without a clue.

–Kris Allen in “Alright With Me”

Oh, Kris. You most definitely have a clue! And you’re only 24?? Wow. I’m so very impressed with him and this album.

I’m exhausted listening to it from start to finish! The amount of emotion and soul-bearing that he reveals in these songs really touched my heart. You know, you have to watch out for the quiet ones. There’s always so much going on in their heads, and when it comes out, it’s pretty amazing stuff. He should be so proud. I know that I am (of him).

  • sunchick

That I don’t agree with. DC’s had ballads, mid-tempos, harder driving/faster beat. It really had some diversity without being all over the place.

Yeah, I gotta back that up. I don’t want to get too deep into cross seasonal stuff because this is Kris’s thread, but if the Cook vs. Kris comparisons are going to come up, I think Cook deserves a lot of credit for pulling together an album that feels like a cohesive artistic story from beginning to end while still pulling off the diversity lyrically and rhythmically of a Bar Ba Sol and a Permanent and A Daily Anthem and Lie and Mr. Sensitive and Avalanche. Lyrically, Kris has served up a good dollop of pretty boring, generic love songs peppered with a more interesting personal piece like the Rain song or Red Guitar here or there. Where Kris excelled is in the production values. I like that he was able to achieve a more raw sound, whereas on a lot of the album cuts from Cook’s record, it’s a bit too polished and lacks the energy that he’s found in the live versions. Kris’s voice seems to be more front and center overall, with say the rare exception of Permanent on Cook’s record. Another area where I think Kris has the edge is not suffering by comparison to pre-AI stuff. This album is clearly superior to the New Shoes stuff I’ve heard, and I think Kris really benefitted from the collaborations. With Cook I think you can make a good case for Analog Heart or DCTR being the better of the two and in some cases the collaborations kind of watering down his writing style. And, let’s see….Kris’s first single doesn’t stand out like a sore thumb the way that CBTM, Cooks second single does for me, but I like Alright With Me less than CBTM, which is the one Cook song I don’t like at all.

I feel like “Alright With Me” would be an extremely fun song to watch performed live. I’m already excited to see Kris on tour singing these songs!

I don’t really understand all the stuff about the lack of “diversity” on this record that people keep bringing up. What is “diverse” to you might come off as schizophrenic to others. I personally think this album has something for everyone. You’ve got the really radio-friendly ones like LLWD and CSA, but also the moodier ballads like “The Truth” and “Bring It Back”, while you have the slightly experimental ones like “Is It Over” and “Alright With Me” that explore different musical styles. You have a much more current sounding version of “Heartless” sans that awful instrumental that was so annoying in the AI studio version, and you’ve got the songs you can feature on TV shows, like “Let It Rain” and “The Truth”. To me, this means it’s diverse enough without detaching from the cohesiveness this album was intended to be.

Now I’m curious as to what the bonus tracks “Send Me All Your Angels” and “From The Ashes” will offer to the album.

  • colette

Thanks for the link to the acoustic version of “Let It Rain.” That’s the Kris I love! Wonder if he’ll keep playing the songs in a more acoustic vein on his TV appearances, in concert, etc……

  • Truthiness

Cook is a harder rocker, more similar to Kings of Leon, and he struggled to get anything to chart in CHR (of course, the choice of singles didn’t really help). I could be wrong, but this seems to be very much a soft rock album. I can see it doing well in AC/HAC/maybe Country cross-over.

Well DC is definitely harder rock than Kris, and this album is very much a soft-rock/pop one. No idea about how it will do on the charts. I think that there are some songs that could do well in some formats, and LLWD is now offically a top 40 song, yes? and get a fair amount of radio play. So I think some songs off of this could do well in various radio formats. I agree, CHR might be tough, not sure which song I would think could do well there. Hmmmm. I thought CSA from the live performance, but the funk just isn’t as evident in the recording. Still think that would probably be his best CHR bet.

  • jersey

Working on a second listen now since my first listen was piecemeal. I like all the songs and love a few. My least favorite is “Lifetime” and the new version of “Heartless”. So far my favs are “Can’t Stay Away” and “Before We Come Undone”. I also like “Bring It Back”. Oh, WAOMF just started again. I get a Barenaked Ladies vibe from this song.

All of these songs seem to have a pretty good hook. Definitely HAC, which for me, is a good thing.

girlygirl, you beat me to the tweet! Okay, I’ve listened to the playlists but never the podcasts…what’s the difference?

  • rayni

I agree that DC had a rockier sound which I also loved. But this album is very…personal, emotional, and yes sexy. Maybe it is the cleaner instrumentation, IDK, but Kris is so ‘there’ in these songs. I’m so suprised and pleased at how drawn in I am. And I don’t care where they chart I’m just pretty sure they will.

I never watched or listened to concert footage so I don’t know that much about the concert version of Heartless. What I find so interesting about your discussions of it are all the different versions Kris has put out there – and most folks love some version of it. Already we’re discussing the variances in live and recorded versions of some of these songs. Like Cookie, Kris is gonna keep us engaged musically. Fun ride yes indeedy!

  • jersey

I think the podcasts are celebrities recommending their favorite music from itunes. They usually have a kind of countdown which they host.

  • glamfan

the only songs i really like are “before we come undone” and “can’t stay away.” i know kris’s style is more acoustic but a lot of the instrumentation and music just isn’t as interesting to me. i do love kris’s voice though. except on “i need to know”- it sounds like he’s channeling the fray, but i wish he would clear his throat a little. sorry, i’m a tough critic.

  • Starr

My problem with David Cook’s songs was that they sounded too much like late 90s early 2000s alternative rock like Nickelback, Creed and Our Lady Peace. That’s not necessarily a bad thing, it’s just I felt like they all sounded like the same guitar-driven rock.

For me, Kris’s album sounds very much like the here and now in music. With artists like The Fray and OneRepublic gaining popularity, his album fits in really well with them. I also think that Kris’s live performance will win people over, because the energy he brings to his live performances really does wonders for the song. I also like the changes done to the songs when they are performed live. For instance, on the live version of “Can’t Stay Away” there is that guitar riff in the second verse after he sings “I’m not gonna try to deny”, on the record it is replaced with some kind of synth-sounding thingy, which is not to my liking.

Anyway, I think “Before We Come Undone” sounds the most like what you hear is what you get. Although I do think the live version sounds way way better because of the energy, again.

Personally, even though comparisons to current artists are kind of helpful in selling a record, I think we should just take this album as it is. It’s good pop music; it’s certainly not cookie-cutter when it comes to sound, seeing as we’ve been comparing songs to bands like Maroon 5 and Jimmy Eat World and Carolina Liar. Lyric-wise, sure it deals with the same stuff that most pop songs deal with, love, like, whatever – but did any of us really expect Kris to be singing about sex, drugs and rock n’ roll? And I’m the biggest Kings of Leon fan out there, but it’s not like “Use Somebody” was a lyrical masterpiece. So I think that people will nitpick, but ultimately we can only take it for what it is. For a record that has been produced in such a short time, with frustrations from Kris about how to churn it out, it’s remarkable what has been accomplished here. ANd the best part is that it really showcases Kris’s voice, which is what I was most afraid of, that the production would overshadow his vocals.

    A++ work, Kris.

  • lucy

    Me, too.

I think they have to do whatever it is that you do these days to push album sales rather than single sales, since single sales seem to come largely from CHR. Don’t know whether anyone knows what that is, but I hope that they do.

  • Truthiness

Hmmm. I can sort of see what your saying about the lyrics, and yes, some of it generic sounding to me, because almost all of it is soft-pop rock, and that’s not my groove. But I think that I like this album more than Cook’s last year for some of the reasons you put forth, are that I like the production values more with this one. Kris’s voice comes through more, I think more of what he is about as an artist, come through on this, than I felt for Cook last year. So yeah, those are some good reasons why I personally feel it’s a superior album. Just for me.

Oh and I don’t really care for either DC’s or Kris’s pre-Idol work, so I would never bother to compare them to their first ‘real,’ album.

I do think that both are going to sound better live, than they do on their albums and I’m going to enjoy them more there. CSA is a prime example of that for me for Kris. Really like the live performance, not so fond of this recording. On the other hand, not so fond of the live BWCU, or WAOMF, and I’m liking them both more than I did before.

After the last chorus of “Red Guitar” there is a nice instrumental portion that reminds me of Coldplay’s “Clocks”

There’s a track by track review by Brian Mansfield of USA Today of Kris’s album here:

Can’t Stay Away (Kris Allen, Lindy Robbins, Mike Elizondo). … … built on a bassline that I’m going to guess comes courtesy of Mike Elizondo (who also co-wrote Carrie Underwood’s Cowboy Casanova).

I’m glad that my feeling of Can’t Stay Away like a country song doesn’t come from nowhere.

  • Starr

“You could break this silence with words we wish we’d never said,
But I can hear it like a scream; what’s become of you and me?
Are we still inside this night, or am I going crazy?”

    I like these lines :)

I think the whole of “Before We Come Undone” is really well-written. Also, if you listen to the bridge where he sings “My pride is out the door, ’cause I know we can make it before…” the pause before he jumps into the next “make it before”, there’s a part where he just sucks in his breath, kind of like bracing himself. Small things like that, those are what I like about Kris. If it was intentional, great, that just goes to show he’s very aware about the nuance he can offer to a song. If it was unintentional, ever better. It’s an awesome subtlety he lends to the song.

Is it just me, or does “Can’t Stay Away” sound a bit subdued on the record than it does live? I think it’s mostly because I can hear the guitar and it’s more pronounced on the live version.

  • mimi

@ Starr– I agree about Can’t Stay Away– I feel like it was more driving live. I still like the song though. I am also very taken with the presence of his breathing throughout the album– it adds so much emotion.

  • LaurelG

My picks from the album in order of preference:

    BEST

    The Truth*
    Before We Come Undone
    Bring It Back

    GOOD

    Let It Rain
    LLWD
    Can’t Stay Away

*Really love The Truth. Beautiful song and I think it could be a big hit for Kris.

  • Starr

@mimi: Yeah, I think this is why I like this album a lot. Yes, it sounds more well-produced than Brand New Shoes, but it also doesn’t take away the nuances in Kris’s voice. They were able to marry polished and produced sounds with earnest and grounded vocals – good combo. There are songs that are super produced, like say, “Can’t Stay Away” and “Written All Over My Face”, and then there are the simpler songs that are all about the vocals, like “I Need to Know” and “The Truth”.

I always thought what made Kris special was his ability to connect with the listener when he sings. I was crumbling when he sang “Falling Slowly” on Idol, and he brought so much intensity to “Ain’t No Sunshine” – I think that he brought the same elements he showcased in these songs to the ones on his album. “Bring It Back” is a song I think that ANS lovers will like a lot. Kris could sing the alphabet and he would make you believe the song is about love or some shiz. I like the conviction in his voice :)

  • mimi

I only started watching AI during the top 13 week and Kris definitely caught my eye, but not for his singing :). Falling Slowly sealed the deal for me– I actually started voting then! Totally agree that he brings so much emotion to the ballads. I’m just so impressed at how great his voice sounds, loved it on the show for the emotive qualities but now it’s fuller and his range has improved so much– he can totally pull off the more Maroon 5ish songs no prob.

  • anovich

Bring It Back is better with each subsequent listen – this needs to be on a show like Grey’s anatomy or something – it definitely fits that type of music with the haunting line to the instrumental.

‘Bring It Back’ is a song I think that ANS lovers will like a lot.

I totally agree. Similarly, I think those who love Falling Slowly will like I Need To Know – it has that same quality in Kris’s connection to the lyrics.

  • IdolThoughts

Cookie doesn’t sound or rock like Kings of Leon. More like Bryan Adams. Actually lyrically and musically…he better resembles artists like Bryan Adams and John C. Mellencamp. To me anyway.

Great job Kris, may you find great success & happiness after your crazy Idol ride.

Yeah I think that this is one of the strengths of this record; it’s pretty easy listening and doesn’t offend anyone’s sensibilities. It’s good driving music, good sleeping music, good chill-out music, good hanging out music, you get the idea.

On a side note: My mom walked in the room and told me to wipe the drool off my chin LOL (not literally, of course………ahem………)

I thought it kind of odd to include all the Katy stuff. I mean, nice that she’s the wife and all, but why do I care what her favourites are?

I think Brian Mansfield was trying to find an album theme or storyline to connect these songs, which I find unnecessary. Since lots of them are about relationship, Brian dropped in the presumed heroine, Kris’ wife Katy, in the album story. If I know less and only read the reviews, I’ll worry that Kris’ marriage is on an edge. lol

  • anovich

Every time I think I have an order of favorite to least favorite I realize I’m missing something or I like a song better than it’s placeent on my list would imply. I think Before We Come Undone, Bring It back, and Alright with Me oculd have potential as singles. But I think my favorite is Let It Rain, though Before We Come Undone is a close second. Lifetime and The Truth seem the weakest to me, and I actually like that he’s done yet another arrangement of Heartless. Thankfully NoBo is nowhere to be seen.

It makes me wonder what the bonus songs are like and if the Kearney song will ever see the light of day.

Yeah I thought it was weird, too. I mean, he can definitely relate “Red Guitar” to Katy because Kris has revealed the much, but unless Kris has said that any of the other songs are specifically about Katy, I think people shouldn’t read too much into it. Songwriters come up with imaginary scenarios all the time and I think “Before We Come Undone” has a nice concept and doesn’t necessarily have to be about real life.

WOW. I haven’t read everyone’s comments yet. But I really hope that the vast majority are good. Otherwise I will lose faith in the participants of this blog. He’s definitely staked his claim here, saying “here is the type of artist i am”. Good for him. Well-made album, great instrumentation, spot-on lyrics & emotional delivery. 3/4 of this album is ready-made for Greys Anatomy.

I love this kind of music. BUT the problem is, Greys Anatomy music is very mid-2000s. but we’re headed into 2010, so the album sounds dated. And this type of music isn’t old enough yet to be new again. Have The Fray, One Republic, Snow Patrol had a hit since 2006? Even Maroon 5, Matchbox 20, and John Mayer haven’t charted much since then.

I so wish Kris were releasing this album in 2005…

I HOPE HOPE HOPE Alright With Me gets released as a single. Though I can almost guarantee it will be since it’s the only REAL upbeat song.

Maybe some chaos going on in his life… draw big crowd, dancing in some big stadium… Kris comes out belting It’s Alright, Alright with me… GAHAHHHHH!

The idea alone twists my mind. Please please I hope it comes out.

  • Reflections On Life

@ redalert: Alright With Me is sooo John Cougar Mellenkampf and “I fight authority, authority always wins”! It really stands out as being stylistically different from the rest of the album. My personal fav song. It was rock back in the ’80s, but today this song would do well with the country audience. Remember they paired up Kris with Keith Urban in the AI finale? They are keeping one foot in the crossover-country camp in case his career & music need to go in that direction for financial success.

I’m listening to ir right now. I’m not a huge Kris fan but this is a very solid album. Very respectable for a guy off Idol. I like The Truth and the “Rain” song. I’m not making any predictions on how well it’ll do but Kris should be proud of what he’s done.

Oh, and ‘Is It Over’ kind of reminds me of Billy Vera and the Beaters’ ‘At This Moment,’ which was a huge hit in the 80s. Hoping Kris can have that kind of humungous hit. Or that Kris would bring back ‘At This Moment.’ Just a weird thought that occurred to me during ‘Is It Over’ ’ ¦

“Is it Over” is one of the songs that, when it started, I thought, “Oh, boy!” And then a bunch of instruments kicked in, same old, same old, and killed it. At first I thought we might get a little Ray LaMontagne, mixed with a Rod Stewart instrumentation, with a dash of this-melody-sounds-like-the-Beatles-wrote-it. But, no. “I Need to Know” is the one song from this album that I will download. I don’t know who did the arrangements on this album, but keeping the arrangement simple works best for Kris.

  • movin2thabeet

For me, this is ok background music. There’s nothing about it that calls me in, although I totally understand this is a very subjective experience.

For those of you comparing it to DC’s music, IMO, that doesn’t really work since they are two separate genres – KA’s is softer melodic pop with an emphasis on the vocals, while DC’s music is much harder-edged music with a greater emphasis on the instruments, especially the rocking guitar. So by their very nature, of course KA’s recording will emphasize the vocals more, as its the nature of the type of music he’s making. Dave loves the crunchy guitar sound and it will likely remain an important part of his recordings. Having said all that, I do agree that this album sounds more faithful to Kris, than DC’s album was to him.

Also, since KA’s music aims more closely at the pop world, it does have greater chances of success there, even if the material isn’t stellar. I think Idol is better at marketing pop artists than rockers and IMO, Kris, Adam and Allison are all pop artists, at least at this point in time. As a rocker, DC has had to navigate a trickier terrain from Idol pop world to rock musician. Especially with the rock radio snub of all things Idol which even Daughtry must contend with, that’s just a bumpy, long-winding road.

  • jpfan

I think The Truth could be a huge hit for Kris. It’s a great power ballad.
In terms of Cook, I prefer pop to his brand of rock. I’m not a big fan of Kris’ brand of pop either. But Kris really sounds like Kris (if that makes sense.)

‘Is it Over’ is one of the songs that, when it started, I thought, ‘Oh, boy!’ And then a bunch of instruments kicked in, same old, same old, and killed it. At first I thought we might get a little Ray LaMontagne, mixed with a Rod Stewart instrumentation, with a dash of this-melody-sounds-like-the-Beatles-wrote-it. But, no. ‘I Need to Know’ is the one song from this album that I will download. I don’t know who did the arrangements on this album, but keeping the arrangement simple works best for Kris.

That was exactly my reaction to that song all the way around. It started out, all Bluesy and I was like ‘yeah, digging it,’ than all the played out jangly instrumentation started and I was like ‘ohhh, you ruined it. sadface’ And yes exactly, “I Need To Know,” is the one song I will definitely download, because it’s spareness with the music and Kris’s voice, both are really good and yeah, I think what works best for Kris. Or at least that’s my sweet spot with him.

  • alxsavage

Way to go Kris! There are some really pretty tracks on this album, as a non Kris fan I can really, really say that I’m blown away by the quality on this album (I didn’t have doubts on Kris’ talents, but you know, Idol releases…).

It’s very pleasant. I might as well end up buying it, specially after seeing it’s only $7dlls.

And thank you to whoever posted the littleglitterlittleglam link (I couldn’t find back the right person to thank), I don’t understand why AOL doesn’t let international listeners take a sneak peak, after all, hearing it is convincing me to get the album.

i’m posting again the audio of “let it rain”. I think it’s an amazing song. It has a killer melody. So brilliant Kris!!!

    Reflections On Life

He’s definitely staked his claim here, saying ‘here is the type of artist i am’ .

I so wish Kris were releasing this album in 2005′ ¦

Personally, I don’t really care for charts, but I know the label will be looking for something that becomes a hit when it comes to these Idols. I’m a big fan of Snow Patrol and they always manage to churn out awesome albums even though they do not become hits. “Chasing Cars” was not my favorite song off of “Open Your Eyes” but for some weird reason the combo of that song with Grey’s Anatomy made it a huge hit. My favorite song off of that Snow Patrol record is the title track, and it never even made the charts, and yet it’s a crowd favorite at their concerts. To me, charts and sales are all well and good, but they are fleeting. Half the songs on the charts right now I have no desire to even listen to, but that might be due to personal preference rather than quality. I just keep thinking about that Jason DeRulo song “Watcha Say” or something that is consistently on the top of the charts – I think it’s an awful song that takes advantage of a cut from an awesome song from Imogen Heap and simply layers a bunch of R&B runs on it to qualify it for top 40, but it still charts. So my point is, if some of these songs do not chart, it does not make them less than stellar.

I think this album delivers because it’s exactly what Kris promised. He never tried to market himself any other way; he always said he was going to put out a pop/rock album. For those who think he should have kept it more on the acoustic side, that’s a sentiment a lot of Kris fans share, but at the same time, when you’re the American Idol winner and you have all these opportunities to experiment with all these sounds and different styles, should you stick with the tried and true style and give people what they’ve already heard? I think Kris made a good decision to take it a step forward and not play it safe with a mostly-acoustic or stripped down album. He can always do that for live shows, anyway, which as we have observed from his recent performances, he tends to do.

I also wanted to add that the cool thing about this record is that you can like different songs everytime you give it a listen. When it was just the 30-second snippets, I was in love with “Red Guitar” and “Alright With Me”, because they are the ones that leave the best first impressions, IMO. However once you listen to the whole record, what you didn’t care for at first you now like. For instance, when I first heard “Bring It Back” as a 30-second snippet I didn’t like it, and I hated “The Truth” at first listen. Now those two are among my favorites. My favorites change with every listen. IMO, that’s a great thing.

  • Seeker

You’ve not heard a peep from me till now, so plz excuse my rambling!

You know how artists breathe in, and you can totally hear it on tracks… Kris’s breath sounds different bcoz he breathes in through his
mouth, through his teeth, it almost sounds like a hiss. I noticed this on BNS, but it’s not that obvious on this album, very few places
(eg.around or after the BWCU Bridge.) I think it’s the SEXIEST thing ever!!!!

OK These songs all are just so good. It’s a perfect album to play on your car when ur driving around. Perfect listening while it’s raining
with a warm cup of tea or some wine.

Live Like We’re Dying – Catchy as hell!

Before We Come Undone – Loved the Live version! Loved the studio one! The song in itself is just so beautiful, lyrics are really really good!

Can’t Stay Away – Live version was definately funkier but OMG LOVE THIS SONG! So sexy, so funky, so playful so Kris if you really think about it.

The Truth – Hello, Calling Movie Soundtracks, RN!!! the song could have done without the ‘elephant’ but it’s beautiful! Love love Kris’s big vocals.

Written All Over My Face – I’m suprised at how much I love this song!! It just puts a smile on my face. Record version is better than the live one. Not once do i think of “Script” or that it’s not written by Kris Allen. The song so sweet on it’s own but it’s Kris’s vocals that gives it the perfect playfulness.

Bring It Back – BRB CRYING!!!!!! Oh it’s so perfect, it’s just so heart breaking…. Love it’s purity and softness. OMG his vocals are so beautiful in this song… So Kris, so delicious. Crying again! (Soundtrack!!!)

Red Guitar – (SQEEEEEE!) OMG love the effing druming in the 1st verse!!! Oh just such a sweet sweet song. Oh beautiful beautiful bridge. I’m in love with the album so far!!

Is It Over – OMG SEXY MUCH!! But also so heartfelt.Oh oh vocals… killing me! Love the musical bends and turns in this song. Kill me Bridge Kill me! Oh CAle + Kris = Sexy Times. So bluezy!! So smooth Jazzy! ‘Take ur Time’! Gets me every effing time! Such an awesome change of pace and mood.* (Damn it, This just gets better & better on repeat!)

Let It Rain – Ok I’ve been in love this song since yesterday. And the recorded version is pretty close to what Kris sang live… Lovely, in it’s simplicity.

Alright with me – Awwwwww FUN!!!!!! Loved the pulled back Bridge — falsetto!!!

Lifetime – I knew it! I knew this song would be amazing in it’s entirety! OMG Love it now!!!! Goddammit! Love soft rise and falls of Kris’s vocals in this song.

I Need To Know – Love this song with fierceness of a thousand suns. Insane passion, Insane!!! BRB curling into a ball and shaking! Jive, u little bitch, kudoes to you for letting Kris have this song. You’d have to be fking crazy to pass on this song! Oooooh his vocals, so soft and fragile, so melancholic… Kill me now! …the gentle tickling of keys… the gentle swell of his vocals… oooh the pleading…. the violins……then back to his gentle aching vocals….PERFECTION! (Soundtrack!!!!!)

Heartless – Yes ofcorse I would have preffered the acoustic version but I really really enjoy this version. Whoa! check out the riffing in this song!

*(I’m crazy, my fav part of a song I like, inevitably becomes the Bridge. And I love Kris’s trademark take on bridges – He lets his vocals swell and rise, pulling u completely in, then he lets an almost hush fall over, then he takes on the chorus almost a cappela, maybe a few strings or keys following his vocals. LOVE!)

Right, So favs are – I Need To Know, Is It Over, Bring it Back, Red Guitar, Before We Come Undone, Can’t Stay Away. WAOMF. These I love on loop!

  • Truthiness

Jim C’s reaction to Kris’ album. As expected, really likes it. But he does point out things he feels are flawed/weak spots, so not a total fanboy flail react

Well I disagree with him most especially with WAOMF and LLWD, I would totally switch those around in terms of what I thought should be the single, and the one I prefer.

  • Starr

If I were to air some concerns I have about any of the songs, it would be for “Heartless”, which seems to have garnered mixed reactions. At first listen I cringed, but the whole thing isn’t that bad once you go through it. Yes, it’s way overproduced but thank god this was on a bonus track and not any of the songs Kris wrote. There is a note in there where Kris loses his voice and it sounds like he squeaked through the end note. It’s pretty bad, but it’s kind of covered by the busy backing music.

But then again, I’m the kind of girl who likes quirks and flaws in a singer’s voice, so I don’t think it’s that big of a deal. Also, I will agree with Jim’s assessment of “Before We Come Undone”. While I love this song, it does sound like they slowed Kris’s singing down. For some reason the record’s version does not have the same urgency the live one does; nonetheless it’s a great song.

  • salz

Having listened to the songs I have to say that I’m loving Kris’ sound! I agree with you jpfan that ‘The Truth’ has to be a single. I’m also really digging ‘Before We Come Undone’ so hopefully that’ll be a single as well. ‘Heartless’ is just the shit and it’s probably my fav at the moment. I loved how they rearranged the song and Kris’ vocals on it is really great. I like ‘Can’t Stay Away’ but about halfway through the song I get this like Backstreet Boys vibe that turns be off. It’s decent and it could do well on the charts but I’m just not feeling. The rest of the songs are ok, nothing really grabbed my attention.

    For me:

    Heartless
    Before We Come Undone
    The Truth
    Can’t Stay Away

Overall though this is a great first effort. Congrats Kris!!!!!

  • cookcricket

I haven’t listened yet. I’ve read a few comments and honestly I’m a little skeered. Not based on any comments mind you, but instead on my anticipation for this, esp. since the snippets have come out. So off I go to take my first listen!!! Here I go… I’m off…. Going now…. This is it!

  • LambertRocks

Just finished listening to the album on AOL, after first listen my favorite songs are:

    Before We Come Undone
    The Truth
    Alright With Me
    Let It Rain
    I Need To Know
    Heartless

I think these songs are great, they’re easy to love and I hope they’ll get a lot of radio play if any of them happen to be future singles!

I agree with others that after awhile the songs start to run together a bit, but overall, I think it’s a really good post-Idol debut album. Once these songs hit the radio, he’ll effortlessly pick up new fans.

    Way to go, Kris!!

  • IdolThoughts

The only song that I’m starting to have a problem with…after the 5 times playing the album is Heartless. Yuck. I’ll pass on that one from now on. I just feel like it strays from the album. First of all…the lyrics just don’t go with Kris. Granted…it’s a cover. But the rest of the album is very Kris-ish. Heartless…yeah, that’s gonna be a NO for me dawg. (channeling my inner Randy)

I agree, but I don’t get the same “yucK” vibe from it. I just feel like it is rather anticlimactic, especially after “I Need to Know” ties up the whole album nicely.

  • mzbet

Most everything has been said already. But I did want to add my compliments to Kris. I love everything on the album…not a one that I would skip over. Kris runs the gamut from a couple of happy, get-your-feet-moving songs to some rip-your-heart-out, cry-your-eyes-out songs.

At this point, I’ve listened to the whole album about 4 times (had to work today or it would have been many more LOL), and I’m still darned if I can pick out only a few favorites. I love them all for different reasons. Yes, I love his new version of Heartless, too. It’s just different, and since it’s a bonus track, I don’t think it matters that it is not in the same vibe as the rest of the album.

Congratulations, Kris, on totally delivering an album that has your stamp on it. This album says, “May I introduce you to Kris Allen” very well. BTW, I love the little touch of BNS sound in “Is It Over”.

Anxiously waiting to see what single will be released from this album next!

Yeah, but it’s a bonus track. The last song of the album is I Need To Know. Bonus tracks should be treated as just that. Something extra, not part of the overall design. (If it was part of the album, I wouldn’t have put it last, either.)

I understand that it’s a bonus track, and since it’s pretty common for people to purchase singles off of iTunes as opposed to whole albums, I can see why to some it wouldn’t matter. However, bonus track or not it’s still on the record. I don’t think that just because it’s a bonus track it should get a free pass, just as “Send Me All Your Angels” and “From the Ashes” should be judged according to whether they fit the record. That’s just me, though. I just would hate to think that some songs were passed up in favor of songs that didn’t even fit the album. I don’t know how the Mat Kearney song sounds like, but if it ended up fitting cohesively with the rest of the album, even as a bonus track, I would feel pretty ticked off that they pushed for “Heartless” instead of that one.

But just my two cents. I see what you mean, though.

  • dcmjfan127

I love the whole thing – Heartless a little less then the rest of it
I LOVE ‘Bring it Back’!! It is heart wrenching. Before We Come Undone is still a fave and Red Guitar gets stuck in my head.
It is tough to pick which song I would like to see released as his next single.

  • LeeTravers

“Alright with Me” is a delight and “Bring It Back” quite beautiful and poignant (has a Ferras “Aliens and Rainbows vibe). Kris must be very happy with his album – getting good reviews.

  • SarahP

awww starr and seeker. i was missing you guys last night.

going back to read the new comments now…

BTW we finally got a full name on the other guitarist in Kris’ band. According to Cale – who (along with Kris) briefly did an AIM chat with ontd_ai peeps after last night’s concert (transcript of the flailing chat is on ontd_ai but is members locked), the guitarist’s name is Andrew Deroberts

  • erinnthered

    First impressions, first listen…

Over production is a given, so not even gonna go there.

The lyrics are pretty cheesy, but the melodies are crazy infectious. Well done for a first effort. Very solid.

Liking Before We Come Undone, The Truth (I’m shocked!), Written All Over My Face, Red Guitar

Really liking Can’t Stay Away (live was still better), Let it Rain, Alright With Me (not what I expected at all – the lyrics actually work with this one – sort of, cheesy on purpose), and I Need to Know (really great)

Holy Crap, Is It Over is good song, full stop. May not be radio friendly, but good. Go Kris and Cale! (Not saying it’s anything new, just saying it’s a good song.)

I like Heartless more than I thought I would. It’s vocally stripped down a lot more than it appeared in the snippet. Still has that great break. I could also just be a Salaam Remi fantard…probably the latter.

On the fence on Bring it Back. I like it, but no as much as I’d hoped. That’s what I get for having high expectations. Too long. Needed editing.

Not a fan of Lifetime. Pretty meh.

Sounds like he’s a got few possible singles on there…if it does well. Nice.

I was just referring to when you said the album should have ended with I Need To Know. Because at least in theory it does end there. Then there’s a bonus track.

I guess I’m not with the people who don’t like Heartless, I really loved hearing it. Does it match the style of the rest of the songs? I don’t care, I guess.

  • SarahP

‘Lifetime’ is actually really good. It was my least favorite from the entire album during the snippets but hearing the whole song really helps it. You can definitely hear the influence from Jonathan Foreman of Switchfoot. The guitar in this song is reminiscent of ‘Dare You To Move’ ’s guitar work.

sad to say, being a big fan of jon foreman, i was kinda disappointed in this song. my second least favourite song of the album but should go back to listen to it again. i think its one of those song which kinda grows on you after a couple of listens

  • karenc

I listened to it to the stream about 3 or 4 times today, and I love it. There wasn’t a song that I really didn’t like, and I think I like Before we come undone the best.

The weird part is that on the show, I liked Adam from the beginning, and Kris later on. I started liking Kris more and more as the season went on to the point I liked them equally by the end.

Anyway, as the cds are coming out I am finding I like Kris’s music a lot more. I tend to like rock or alternative rock and love David Cook also. I’m finding Kris’s music is on the softer side than I usually listen to but think his songs are very interesting musically. Even on the show I thought that Kris was very current and think this cd will do well.

  • cookcricket

I just listened the whole way through, skipped LLWD because I’ve heard it a few times, hee, but I almost wish I would have listened to it because I feel as if I just took an emotional journey.

I don’t care what anyone else thinks (still haven’t read many comments) or if I sound OTT, but that’ truly how I feel. Wow! I didn’t even mind Heartless because it’s different from any I’ve heard.

I’m coming back to read comments soon.

“Lifetime” still isn’t my favorite song, however it wasn’t what I thought it was judging from the 30-second snippet. If I were to rank favorites (which is super tough because I love almost every song on this thing):

    Red Guitar
    Alright With Me
    I Need to Know
    Is It Over
    Before We Come Undone
    The Truth
    Written All Over My Face
    Bring It Back
    Can’t Stay Away
    Live Like We’re Dying
    Let It Rain
    Lifetime
    Heartless

Although pretty much all of those are interchangeable, save for “Lifetime” and “Heartless”. Mark of a good album, I tell you, when you keep switching favorites.

Anyone else see the similarities between “Red Guitar” and U2′s stuff? Sometimes I get a “Sometimes You Can’t Make It On Your Own” vibe, and then later a “With or Without You” vibe, and then “Where the Streets Have No Name” vibe…LOL And the instrumental portion towards the end of “Red Guitar” is delicious, reminds me of Coldplay.

  • jmom376

I finally just got a chance to listen to the whole CD. I can’t wait to have the physical copy of the CD next week so I can listen to it on my commute to/from work. I love all of the songs and didn’t hear anything that I would skip over. I am so proud of him!

I like this Heartless (listening to it now), definitely different from the other versions, but still Kris.

  • St.Lucia

I absolutely LOVE this album. I don’t even think love is a strong enough word for how much I adore this album.

And I was one of the first to dismiss the album after 30 second clips for sounding too bland and songs weren’t jumping out. I’m so glad I gave it a second listen because it is absolutely wonderful! Now I can’t STOP listening.

I can’t believe this actually an idol album because it seems so well put together and…not cheesy!

Kris has the most beautiful recording voice!

    I’m just gushing over this!

I still don’t love “Live like we’re dying” or the “Heartless” remake but that’s only 2 songs out of the 13 that I just can’t stand.

THIS might be the first Idol release I actually love! Go KRIS! Way to win me over!

  • Starr

Kris definitely has a voice that radio loves. His voice is so smooth on these tunes and I love the rise and fall of his vocals on songs like “Lifetime” and “Bring It Back”. He definitely shows off his muscular voice in “The Truth” and oh that intense build-up towards the end of “I Need to Know” – seriously I got chills when he just started almost-screaming-crying-wailing “I need to knoooooooow! I neeeed to knoooow!” I wanted to just run up and give him a bear hug.

  • SarahP

just read brian mansfield’s review…and found out that cale is the other guy who auditioned with kris? cool! i really like that he’s getting his break

  • glamfan

i like the end of “i need to know.” but if you want to hear a truly epic and haunting song that escalates in the same way, listen to “phantomrider” by tokio hotel. you’ll get chills and actually cry.

  • SarahP

i didnt listen to heartless after i listened to I Need To Know cos thats one of those songs which stikes a chord in your heart and you cant listen to anything afterwards for like another 10 minutes. i confess i didnt listen to heartless until after my 4th listen to the album and surprisingly really liked it. i think they were going the groovy ne-yo route and i love his lower sexy register he uses at the beginning. its a win for me.

and yeah starr, you know i’m probably a leaky cauldron (my friends call me that cos i cry at the slightest thing) but after listening to the wailing I Need To Knooooow at the end, i had goosebumps and tears. and yeah, how about we all give a virtual hug to kris right now. maybe a collective twitter hug?

  • SarahP

If I’m not mistaken, Kris is the first American Idol winner not to have to include the coronation song on his debut album. But he still wanted the album to have some direct connection to the show, so he re-recorded Kanye West’s Heartless. Works for me

from brian mansfield’s review! so this looked like he did get to give a lot of input and was able to have a big say in the direction of the album and was not one of those idol puppets we all think they are. Let It Rain people!

by the way, listening to the acoustic version of let it rain now and love it.

ok me off for work now.

  • Seeker

    Good to know Glamfan.

“I wanted to just run up and give him a bear hug.” Awww Starr ur such a good girl, coz on my 16th listening of the song… I wanted to just run up to him to do alot more. ;) LOL

And SarahP, I’ve been sooo sick for over two weeks!! I’ve just managed to get back to life for today and 6th’s Flailing!

I love the purity of Bring it back and I Need To Know. In it’s musicality, these songs are so basic, so simple but there in lies the genius – focus is entirely on the lyrics and mainly on Kris’s heartbreaking vocals…. just pierces through ur heart.

And I get why a lot of ppl are some what dissappointed with Heartless. I mean “nobody better than Meeee” I mean the riffs at “Me”! what was that!!?? So unnecessary and perhaps out of place. As a bonus track, the Acoustic live version or just another acoustic version would have been perfect but inspite of everything I don’t hate it… I, infact enjoy it, do a little jig even… it’s catchy!

  • glamfan

my faves are “before we come undone” and “can’t stay away.” i LOVE the tone of kris’s voice, however not all these songs are sticking in my head or stand as unique on their own. good first album.

  • sunchick

Truthiness: I can sort of see what your saying about the lyrics, and yes, some of it generic sounding to me… But I think that I like this album more than Cook’s last year for some of the reasons you put forth, are that I like the production values more with this one.

Fair enough and valid points, but the “real” album thing is a little too dismissive for me, ie, I dig that Cook is a prolific songwriter and has a yooge back catalogue of fairly interesting stuff that documents his musical evolution. Big picture, and all that. Of the three, Kris Allen The Record, DCTR, and Cook’s Analog Heart, Cook’s meager little solo indie album with it’s cheapo production values still grabs me the most, “real” or not. I even like the album artwork for AH more than either KA (though at least Kris looks very purdy) or especially DCTR with its giant unnaturally pointy Cook head (eep). Mileage, of course, makes the world go round.

  • cookcricket

Seeker, I’m blown away! This album is unbelievably more than amazing!

More specifically, from “Bring It Back” on every song to me is emotion packed, (except Heartless), whether it’s heart wrenching (I Need to Know) or just plain emotionally light-hearted-is that possible(?), (Alright With Me).

SarahP, I decided to listen to Heartless because I couldn’t have probably come back to read or post comments after “I Need to Know” for the rest of the night, it just gutted me (that’s good) emotionally, and so Heartless went back to the light-heartedness to help me to have clarity in what I was thinking. :D I don’t know if that makes sense…

I’m thinking the next single may come from the selections before “Bring It Back” and they are all wonderful songs! I could, obviously, be wrong.

As reviewers review this album, I hope they sit down and listen to it the whole way through and don’t just select certain songs. JMO.

ETA: *looks around*, did everyone go away? I missed the party?

  • SybilTrelawney

I’ve only had a chance to stream the CD once. My initial reaction is positive, but not blown away. Good news: the album is very consistent. Not so good corollary: the songs begin to run into each other towards the end. Listening on shuffle will probably be a good idea. The songs themselves are pretty good — no real klunkers.

I heard Kris live at GMA this summer and was impressed by the strength of his voice — I never felt it was that strong on AI. His voice actually sounds muted to me on this album, and a bit thin. And yet he’s very very pleasant to listen to. He’s relaxing and mellow and makes you feel good.

I tend to like singers with “big” voices. I adore David Cook’s voice, and I was a bigger fan of Adam’s this year. That said, I also liked Kris and voted for him several times to keep him in the game til the finale (ironic given how things turned out!). I don’t know how “commercial” this album is, but it’s a very nice debut album, and it’s definitely Kris. It should get good reviews.

BTW: I did not like this arrangement of Heartless. Liked the stripped down vocals and accompaniment on the show much better — indeed, that’s probably my favorite Kris performance of the season.

    Good to know Glamfan.

‘I wanted to just run up and give him a bear hug.’ Awww Starr ur such a good girl, coz on my 16th listening of the song’ ¦ I wanted to just run up to him to do alot more. LOL

LOL believe me, I’m not that good at all. When he sings “If I crawl on my knees to rewrite” in “Is It Over” I’m just like…Kris…crawling…on…your…knees…thank you…for…that..yummy….visual…. Hahahahaha :D

And then when he sings “I’m knockin’ on your door, baby baby please” on “Alright With Me”, I’m just like, Oh hun, that door’s been wiiiiiide open all along! :D :D :D

  • Seeker

Starr, ok how much do you love ‘Is It Over’? For me, it just gets sexier and sexier on repeat!!!!

Starr and Seeker, Hee hee!!! :D

I didn’t really get vested in AI this year, and didn’t have any pre conceived expectations for Kris’ album, but I think he’s done a really nice job here given all the challenges of putting together a record quickly as an AI winner. Nice mix of songs, and a sound that seems like it could fit right on the radio. I particularly like “Before We Come Undone” and “Let it Rain”. Good job Kris, and good luck with it.

  • oceana

Well, to be honest, sampling the songs, I don’t hear anything much that makes me want to buy the song. A couple aren’t too bad, but many of them are either too slow and/or corny, reminding me of Clay Aiken’s music, or others have an intrusive drum beat and are too “pop r&b sounding” for me. Chris has a nice voice but I’m not taken by the songs. A lot of it sounds slow and old fashioned.

I obviously disagree with the comparisons to David Cook’s cd, which I loved from the first time I heard it. To me there is no comparison between the songs on that cd and this one, David’s songs are original sounding and also I like rock and they are rock to me. Also I think David’s voice sounds amazing on his cd. And I do love his indie cd, Analog Heart also. But I don’t know why they should be compared, might as well compare Kris’s cd to all the past Idols and also to Adam I suppose, not sure why it’s being compared to DC’s in particular other than his was just last year?

I like Kris’s voice but at first listen, maybe one or two songs sound possibly interesting. Just my opinion. I was hoping for a song like Falling Slowly, that is a good song and he sings it very well.

Starr, ok how much do you love ‘Is It Over’? For me, it just gets sexier and sexier on repeat!!!!

Are you kidding? I LOVE IT. I can’t seem to pick any favorite on this album, which is awesome. “Is It Over” is so sexy. I love bluesy Kris. I also think that this is a song that will appeal to the more highbrow in taste who don’t think Idols can do anything but radio-friendly pop. Personally I do not think that “Is It Over” will ever be released as a single (it just does not have commercial appeal) but it’s an amazing song, and I think a lot of people, Idoloonies and non-Idoloonies alike, will love this song even if isn’t released as a single.

From what I have heard from Kris in interviews, “I Need to Know”, “Red Guitar”, “Alright With Me” and “Is It Over” seem to be his favorites, and coincidentally those are my top songs, and they seem to be the majority of people’s favorites anyhow. “I Need to Know” is his favorite because it sounds the most grounded and he loves the idea of how it was recorded. “Red Guitar” for its sentimental aspect – it’s personal to him musically and personally. “Alright With Me” I remember in the yahoo interview he had this huge grin on his face when he was talking about it, and he said it was such a fun song, and it is! I bet he will love performing this song live. “Is It Over” because he co-wrote it with Cale, and they both seem to really love that song.

  • FolkFan

I’ve only just now gotten the chance to listen to it, and only once, but I didn’t really like it as much as I thought I would based on the snippets. I didn’t dislike it, so I’ll probably give it another listen later this week, but it just didn’t really grab me.

  • jmom376

Relistening to his CD again. “I need to know” wow!!!! What an amazing and heart wrenching song… Everytime I listen to his songs another one becomes my favorites. I think this is an all around awesome CD.

  • oceana

I’ll definitely give it another listen too, but first off it didn’t grab me. I must say I love the Fray, have their cds, but didn’t really hear similar kinds of songs here, but again, maybe a second listen later will yield something.

Someone mentioned Snow Patrol, not having a hit since 2006? I liked their single last year, Take Back the City, it was a bit of a hit I think. As for Chasing Cars, brilliant song. Also the Fray has had recent hits and just had a song on Brothers and Sisters last night too. I wouldn’t say that either group is stuck in 2006, they both have recent hits imo.

  • Starr

oceana and FolkFan: I’ve listened to the songs more than once, and it definitely helps. I didn’t like “Lifetime” and “Bring It Back” at first listen, but they sound so much better once you get multiple listens in. Familiarity with a track actually does wonders for the song. I’ve heard people say at first listen LLWD is a mouthful of whatever, but when you pay closer attention it’s a good song.

  • Soapbox0916

Kris has a nice smooth mellow voice which could cut both ways. Its working out great for Jack Johnson, Rob Thomas and John Mayer but there are a million guys with similar decent cool voices and vibes and only a couple will be able to have a successful musical career. Since IMO Kris’s voice doesn’t demand attention…

I have no idea what you are talking about when you say there are MILLION of guys with voices like Kris. I can’t imagine how awesome the world would be if that was actually true. IMHO, this is definately not the case. Those other voices are not interchangible with how I feel about Kris’s talent.

I have noticed that I tend to lump together what I don’t love as one big blah which is possibly why Kris sounds like millions of others for some. I just wish sometimes that non-fans and the mehs gave the Kris fans some credit for finding something extra special in Kris, even if it is not something important for them. I am not a Kris fan because I think he sounds like others, but because Kris draws me in to him and his voice gives me chills.

The ability for Kris to pull off an album like this under time contraints while on tour with 19E and major record people involved, this is talent that goes beyond a mellow cool vibe, and makes me very hopeful for his career.

Ok, wow, please forgive my fangirlyness. This album preview is working me up. LOL

I don’t generally like this type of music.

    I like this.

    Congratulations, Kris.

Yeah, ‘Is It Over’ is definately not going to be the next single. But for me personally, I just love it. Love Kris’s bluesy vocals, God! So sexy. And just the vibe of the song – this sexy smokey vibe – Ah! Just love it!

I know i’d said in some earlier post on some other thread that BWCU or CSA are most likely going to be the next single, I still think so but Bring it Back, I think, is so giving them a run for their money… This track could be a great single. How do you like this track, Starr I remember this wasn’t ur fav from the 30 sec snippets.

I know alot of ppl are also leaning towards The Truth. Though I love the song, it’s not one of my fav.

I need to know, Bring it back, Is It Over, Red Guitar — these songs just flow through me, speak to me and I can just feel Kris in these songs at every note, at every word.

  • Lulu2

One thing I forgot to mention, for those of you that like “I Need to Know”: Kris is a big fan of the movie “Once”, which I also love. The whole soundtrack is fabulous, not just “Falling Slowly,” the song that Kris covered on AI. If you liked “I Need to Know”, check out “Lies”, “Leave” and “Say it to me Now” from the soundtrack to “Once”. “I Need to Know” is apparently inspired by those songs.

  • Seeker

“‘I Need to Know’ is apparently inspired by those songs.”
Wow, Lulu2, is this really true. I’ve never heard Kris or anyone affiliated with him or this album make such a suggestion.

I am one of those Adam fans who thought it was absolutely ridiculous that Kris beat him. I was so mad I couldn’t even talk about it at first without losing my cool.

Well, I have gotten over that since I now believe that Adam losing means the universe was looking out for him. He got way more “outside the Idol bubble” notice for losing than he ever would have for winning.

That being said, I am now prepared to be objective about Kris’ album. I have had it on stream all day, first at work, and now, at home. I love it…every song of it. No skipping going on here. As a matter of fact I can see myself sitting around and just relaxing to this music much more than I can Adam’s. Adam’s album will be fun and exciting but Kris’ will definitely get a lot of play in my house when I am just chillin’.

I have high hopes for Kris and his future with this album.

Hi everyone, I can’t believe I’m just now getting a chance to get on MJ’s and talk about this album. I listened to it twice through at work today and I freakin love this album. I am so happy that it turned out so well. I was alternately weepy and dancing in my chair. I’m glad to read so many others enjoying the album as well, or at least finding something they like about it.
I didn’t get much done today as I also listened to the Mraz live album that is also live streaming, which I think is awesome. It gave me a burning desire to hear Kris sing Coyotes, though. OK, end of tangent.
I am having a hard time picking a favorite because I like them all for different reasons. I expected to hate the Heartless remix based on the clips, and I still don’t like the beginning of it, but after it gets into the song I actually like that one too. I am very proud of our boy and I am happy to have these songs in my life now.

  • http://MJO judes

That’s interesting Lulu2 about “I Need To Know” being inspired by songs from “Once”!! Very heartfelt songs & INTK is in the same vein- I just love it!!Being a pianist myself I just love the piano in this – very much like in Falling Slowly!! Interesting that my 18 year old daughter was listening to this & she said sounded like the Fray- & she loves them!!

I am so grateful to those who put the links forward here for those of us outside the US – its been so good to be able to listen to even though I have pre-ordered the album!! That in itself will be great to listen to when it arrives, as the sound quality will be much better than the streaming!!

I’m like many of you here, my favourite changes after listening again but the 2 I love the most are BWCU & now with the full song- Is It Over!! I also like bring It Back , Let It Rain & The Truth much more after hearing the full song!!
My least favourite is Heartless still[ much prefer his AI Live version] but it is better than just the snippett!!

I’m also heartened by the fact that looking at several blogs many of those who aren’t really Kris fans, will still buy 1,2or 3 tracks which I think is great!! It shows that this album will appeal to a wide range of people !! For a first album which was put together fairly hastily I don’t think I could have asked for any more- It really is great!!

BTW I really did not like this version of Heartless.

Yep, “Bring It Back” wasn’t my favorite from the snippets but it’s definitely one of my favorite songs now that I have heard the full-length version. I love the bass line in the chorus, and the intro is absolutely lovely. I love the spilling over and rise and fall of Kris’s vocals on this song. Just goes to show your initial reactions aren’t always justified. However, “Lifetime” still isn’t my favorite song, it’s one of my least favorites, and I’m surprised I don’t like “Let It Rain” as much as everybody does. I do like “The Truth” more than “Bring It Back” and “Let It Rain”.

Also, I would recommend everyone listen to the songs with good headphones, because speakers do not do these songs justice. I discovered a couple of nice things listening through the headphones. For one, there is a “Hey hey” part in “Written All Over My Face” that was neat and kinda surprising.

What a nice comment! :) I agree, there is no reason one should have to choose between the two guys. Their music is incomparable, and when you want to chill, Kris is your guy, while Adam totally taps into the go-all-out-and-rock-out mood.

I love love love the instrumental “yeah yeah yeah” portion in the middle of the song. It’s sooo fun! But I adore it now! Watching Kris bouncing around the stage with this song. PRESH!!!

I finally got to listen to it. YAY KRIS! very swoony. Something about Kris’s style has to ability to produce a happiness vibe for me. It’s audio prozac.

I’m really pleasantly surprised by this album. I hated, hated, HATED LLWD, and was meh about the snippets, but I actually like the album! That was’ ¦ unexpected! O.O Really though.

There are some really good, strong tunes here. A few moments where I found Kris’ voice beautiful. They’re just a couple of moments, a few seconds, but that means something because I never really found his voice beautiful before, and usually don’t even like the timbre of male voices in general (besides Adam, but then he “sings like a girl” :P) There isn’t that much filler, and almost no cheesiness, which is appropriate for Kris.

I don’t know how much I’ll listen to this album, because it’s not my usual kind of music, and there aren’t any songs that really hooked me, but it’s a good album. From the songs I’ve heard from other Idols, I’d say the best debut album from a winner after Carrie’s. The only album that might place before it too is Kelly’s, of which I’ve only heard Miss Independent, but I’ve been told the rest of the debut is a clunker and I’ll go with that :) Anyone with youtube links is welcome to convert me tho.

judes: Me too! I’ve never actually tuned into Idol, I just watched the finale when David Cook won, and I was like, cool a rocker won, that’s nice. I heard a couple of David Cook’s songs and wasn’t a fan, and didn’t intend on watching season 8. I passed through the living room as my sister was watching Hollywood Week and bam! “Man in the Mirror”, Kris Allen – I was hooked. Are there a lot of Australian Kris fans? :)

  • kt_cle

Finally catching up…. I listened twice at work (crappy speakers, low volume) and twice at home (good speakers, high volume)… and I feel as though I have nothing original to add – so screw originality :D

I love it. Love it, love it, love it. The songs range from ‘Like it’ to ‘love it…. every last one of them. I totally agree with whomever said that there are no ‘fast forwards’ in this album. I’ve decided that my favorite will change from moment to moment, depending on my mood.

Already today I took a special third listen to ‘Alright With Me’ to settle me down after some work-related frustration. So fun, so happy and bouncy.

‘I Need to Know’ will be like sad movie you treat yourself to on a rainy Saturday when you need to have your heart ripped out.

‘Red Guitar’ connects with me, I think, because I know how personal it is to Kris.

‘Is it Over’… ohh baby… love the bluesy sound.

‘Lifetime’ sounded a bit country-ish to me on first listen – actually, my cube-mate made some comment about me going country after Lifetime and I Need to Know. But it’s really growing on me after a few listens.

‘Let it Rain’ is beautiful – I agree with whoever is starting the movement to make it the Season 9 boot song.

‘The Truth’ – really liking it… I’m a fan of Train, and I can hear some of that sound in the rhythm of the lyrics.

‘Heartless’ – not my favorite of his versions – but I already have plenty of mp3s of those. I like hearing Kris experiment with a different sound.

As for 2nd single – so many ways to go. I have no particular favorites, except I really want it to be one of the songs that Kris has writing credit on – purely an image/perception thing.

Two of the groups I’ve seen most in concert are Sister Hazel and Bruce Springsteen (woohooo, tomorrow). And whenever an act gets past their 4th or 5th album, there’s always a certain letdown at their concerts because they can no longer play all your favorites. With Kris, you know that some of these songs will rarely, if ever make the concert cut (I’ve never seen a single-cd artist in concert, but don’t they mix in album songs with covers?) Knowing that I’ll never see some of these Kris songs in concert makes me kind of sad, because I could picture him performing every one as I listened.

  • ai_fan

OMG, finally first listen and it’s been out 12+ hrs- why does work get in the way of these things.

I’m still loving the first 4 songs and “The Truth”, I know why his Mom and brother call it their favorite – it’s beautiful.

Count me in the use “Let it Rain” as the boot song for AI this year. I think the lyrics fit the moment as well as Kris’s post idol journey. It would be perfect.

I can’t find any song that I would skip like with some albums. This is a keeper for sure.

Just listening to “Alright with Me” again. Love, love, love it! How much fun will this one be live!

  • mzbet

OK, I’m having visions of seeing Kris in concert. Lights down, spotlight on Kris at the piano singing “I Need To Know”….goosebumps, right?

  • jtoms

i listened to again, and i think i might have a somewhat opposite reaction than most (well maybe aside from the uber kris fans).

i like the back half of the album way more, which is where i’ve note that the criticism that all the songs start blending in appear. but my favorite stretch is from bring it back through alright with me, and i need to know. i think those songs are very much “kris”.

while the first half undoubtedly has more of the poppier/catchier tunes they just seem to ring a little hollow for me. i don’t believe kris when he does the whole maroon 5 thing. and the truth is just sap sap sap. before we come undone is probably the highlight from the first half. and i still contend that LLWD is a good song.

overall, a solid effort. i hope he’s able to define his style and sound more the next time, but he’s put out a fantastic first effort.

  • Starr

Has anyone noticed an underlying theme in most of the songs? They seem to be about Kris not being able to communicate or express himself well. Either something is holding him back (“Let It Rain”), he doesn’t express himself enough (“Written All Over My Face”), he can’t convey what he wants because he doesn’t know how to relate who he was and who he is in the relationship (“Before We Come Undone”), scrambling to find the right words to tell a lover so she won’t walk out the door (“Is It Over”), “honesty is honestly the hardest thing for me right now” (“The Truth”)…

  • dmr

Just wanted to weigh on…I’ve only been able to listen to the songs once through…AAGGHHH!!!! I’ve waited forever for these songs, and the day they are released I have an all-day meeting. Anyway, I like The Truth and Lifetime a little more than I ever thought I would, and I like a few less than I thought I would. Overall though, I LOVE this album. Now I’m excited to hear the bonus tracks. I liked David Cook’s album last year, but in all honesty, I think this one is gonna be my fav. I love that we hear a lot of Kris’s lower register!! I was afraid Kris or his producers would forget how much we all love that!!

I don’t think anyone would disagree that the most radio-friendly (a/k/a pop hit) songs are Can’t Stay Away and Before We Come Undone…I love both of those.

Still enjoying Red Guitar and Bring It Back…still processing those and some others.

All in all, I’m a very happy Kris fan…looking forward to some PR stuff soon!!

i definitely agree with this, although i like the first half of the album, i think the second half is more kris. you can’t really fault him for bringing in a little bit different style though. thats why i dont buy the “all the songs blend together” criticism

I have no idea what you are talking about when you say there are MILLION of guys with voices like Kris. I can’t imagine how awesome the world would be if that was actually true.

Thank you! Love that response. :)

A Boston station (Mix 104.1) was playing Kris’s Heartless (AI studio version) several times a day for a while. The very first time I heard it, I only had to hear “In… the… night…” and I jumped about three feet. I was excited a hell to hear Kris on the radio. And it only took three notes for me to know it was him. If there are a million guys out there with voices like his I don’t see how I recognized his voice that fast. lol

Just want to say, I’ve been a fan of this guy since the get-go. Voted for him week after week, sweated it out on results nights, the whole bit. He has never let me down, never disappointed me. To me he’s something extraordinary. He seems to live in the moment, musically, so whatever he does aleays seems fresh.

I can’t really wrap my head around his whole album right now. I never listen to all the songs on an album at one time. It can take me weeks. I always have early favorites, and then later on I discover other favorites. This is going to be one of those albums and I’m going to enjoy discovering it song by song.

But of course because it’s this album, I did listen to the whole thing. I have certain favorties, like the three songs he performed at the tailgate party, and Let It Rain and I Need To Know, plus the great Alright With Me. But who knows what I’ll like when I really start listening.

I love the album and I’m thrilled so many people seem to like it as well.

ok i cant get to sleep with Let It Rain going on repeat in my head so let me try to write the lyrics to it now’ ¦

so many things are trying to keep me
and so many voices trying to reach me
to tell me that this is not the way
to tell me that this is my mistake

    chorus:
oh let the rain keep falling down
cos it wont stop me from getting where i’m bound
maybe i’m crazy, maybe its too late
    but i’m gonna make it
    forget what the sky says
so ohhh let it rain. let it rain

i know that this is not the way
to even imagine it would be
oh but nothing you say is gonna stop me (stop me)
no matter the way that you bring (yeah) (??)

    chorus

    let it rain x 2

so many things are trying to keep me
mmmm so many voices trying to reach me

    chorus

    let it rain x 4

so many things are trying to keep me

Okay SarahP, I don’t think you’re here anymore, but right when I came to this song on my fourth listen to the album, this post was the next one for me to read…so I followed your lyrics! Thanks!!!! I just love reading lyrics while I listen!!!!!! LOL!!!!

I loved it! It is Kris. Sounds like Kris. Everything in it sounds like Kris. I love Red Guitar, but the first four or five songs are all great. The only song on the entire album that I didn’t much care for on first hearing it was Heartless. Strange that they messed around with perfection. I liked his version better than this one. But all in all I am very, very happy with the album and even happier that I already have prepurchased it. Awesome Kris Allen! I hope to hear quite a few of these songs on the radio. Still loving Live Like Your Dyin’.

I am on my 3rd listen through for today and I like it more and more. I just finished Is It Over and am on Let it Rain. Everytime I pick a favorite, the next song comes on and I like it just as much. I am definitely a happy fan today.

Okay, I have a confession to make. I’m one of those people who looked down on American Idol and thought a show like it could ever produce a good artist. I was unimpressed by previous American Idol alums, and David Cook was the first to make me think that the tide was changing and America no longer wanted someone who could sing the throat olympics (which, let’s face it, that was American Idol pre-season 7) and belt out every letter of the alphabet. I thought American Idol was simply another version of Star Search – pageantry for singers at its finest.

When I heard Kris sing “Man in the Mirror”, what caught me off guard was that he had such a self-effacing vibe. He was the only performer who wasn’t mooning the camera, dressed to impress or doling out perfect responses to questions from Ryan or the judges. Here was this guy who sang a Michael Jackson song in a way I’d never heard it sung before, and he sung it with so much conviction. The other Idols, to me, felt like when they sang they were just singing lines. Like it was “look to the camera here”, “raise your arm up there”, “tilt your head just at this moment”, “belt it out right here”, “look at the judges and point”, “flash megawatt smile” – end scene. To me everyone else was putting on a performance, while Kris was singing his poor little heart out because he ate, lived and breathed music.

People will argue that he does not have a unique voice – sure, I’m not going to say his voice is one of a kind, just like any other artist’s voice is not one of a kind anymore. Someone can always sound like someone else. Adam can sound like Freddie Mercury, Matt can sound like Gavin DeGraw, Charice Pempengco (sp?) can imitate Celine Dion to a T. So voice is not the thing that draws me to Kris; it’s what he DOES with his voice that amazes me. He has complete control over his voice, and everyone saw that from his performance of “To Make You Feel My Love”. But while he can control his voioe and he knows its limits, he also appreciates nuance and the little things (even imperfections) that can enhance a song. The little “oohs” and the “hmms” here and there, and the way he can switch from straight pop/rock to r&b. I love his musicality and what he does with songs to make them fresh. I also love his musical sensibility – he’s not going to make a record to impress people, he’s going to make a record based on what he thinks good music is.

“Are there a lot of Australian Kris fans? [ Starr]”

I know a couple of Aussie Michael Johns fans who like Kris & there’s an Aussie & a New Zealander on IDF but we’re hampered here in Oz a bit as LLWD hasn’t even come out on i-Tunes [ although it is in NZ], that’s why I’ve pre-ordered the album as I have no idea how long it will take. DC’s & DA’s album is still available here so that’s a good sign but I don’t know how long after it came out in the US that it was available here?

I am sure once his music is available here it will go well because Kelly Clarkson has always done well here & Kris has a similar “vibe”!!! She’s also toured down here a few times [ & my daughter is going to see her next March] so I hope Kris can as well at some stage!!!

  • MusicAlltheTime

Merry Krismas everybody! It’s been so fun to listen to the album, and to read everyone’s comments!

    My favorites:
    1. Is It Over — This might sound crazy, but it reminds me of Temple of the Dog. Does that make it old-fashioned? I don’t care, because I love it.

    2. Can’t Stay Away — I in love with the funky bassline. I would love to hear this one live, esp. since I was kinda smitten by Kris’s bass player from the videos of the tailgate concert.

    3. I Need to Know — y’all have already expressed what’s so great about this song.

    4. Live Like We’re Dying — I still think this is an awesome song. I haven’t heard it on the radio yet, but I heard it at Walgreens today.

    5. Alright with Me — Love this one because it’s so different from the rest of the album, and because it does have a Traveling Wilburys vibe.

I HOPE HOPE HOPE Alright With Me gets released as a single. Though I can almost guarantee it will be since it’s the only REAL upbeat song.

Alright With Me is a great song, but Can’t Stay Away is probably the most upbeat and sounds so radio friendly.

  • Sydia

I really like Kris. He is not my favorite idol…but is one of my top three. I think that he doesn’t have the “voice” like Cook( I am comparing them because they are winners), however, I think he has a very nice tone to his voice. I also believe that his voice is very radio friendly, and so is this CD. Not my cuppa, cuz, I like more drama…big voices and such, but I am rooting for him, and will support him by purchasing his CD. He does have an unmistakable Kris sound.

didn’t have time today to write a review like i wanted (too much work and just finish and about to go to bed — what a day!). Anyway can’t go to sleep before writing something.
After a 3rd listen…overall just loving this album. I just LOVE his singing; he has such artistic sensibilities. I’m really impressed with the quality of it vs the time allowed to get it out. I knew Kris could write very well but he has done very well here; it’s beyond my expectations! I love how all the songs have a different vibe and color. I think Kris is a very promising young artist and I bet that his 2nd album will be even better given that he’ll have more time to write and will have acquire then more artistic maturity.
My preferred tracks: LLWD, BWCU, CSA, WAOMF, Bring it back, Red guitar, Let it rain, Alright with me, I need to know.
Like others I would have preferred an acoustic Hearless but I still like the originality of this one.

  • Ratna12

I haven’t had the time to listen to the stream all day. My favorite from the tailgate gig was BWCU, liked CSA & WAOMF is growing on me.

I listened to the Live at Vineyard acoustic “Let it Rain” this morning before going to work – I LOVE, LOVE that song, couldn’t get it out of my head.

I got so excited reading the mostly good comments while I was at work. Got home and read all the other comments till the end.

Finally the first song I listen to – “The truth” due to the great response of some people, I don’t know why I couldn’t remember the snippet ? OMG !!! Sooo good. I can just picture Kris singing it live.

Great job Kris. I already feel vindicated voting for him for 4 hours non stop with 2 phones already.

OK, off to listen to other songs. (like 2 and love 4 already. Yeah, I love LLWD)

Kris Allen – I Need To Know

    Life’s been blinding me
    What I thought I’d see
Is there clarity in this insanity, yeah
What you want from me, yeah

    Roads in front of me
    taking me astray
Are you leaving me or are leading the way
Can you hear what I’m saying

    I need to know
    I need to know
    I need to know
    I need to know

Feel like I’m trying to breathe under water
Trying to climb but I keep falling farther, yeah
    Will you take my hand

Feel so far away, wanna see your face
    Are you even there
    Can you show me
    Can you make me believe

    I need to know (x6)

The piano playing is so beautiful so poignant! Kills me!!
Kris, you just break my heart with this song. Everytime, gets me every time!

*You know how artists breathe in, and you can totally hear it on tracks… Kris’s breath sounds different bcoz he breathes in through his mouth, through his teeth, it almost sounds like a inward hiss. I noticed this on BNS, but it’s not that obvious on this album, very few places. I think it’s the SEXIEST thing ever!* ‘I Need to Know’ is a perfect example.

GOD! How I love this song. I love how this can be interpreted as a call to a higher power, asking for directions or a wounded lover simply pleading for answers or justification, or just plain old heartbroken lament. Just beautiful!

  • oceana

On second listen, I have a more favorable impression of the cd. For me the best way to try out a new cd is to play it in the background while I’m doing other things on the computer, then it seeps into my awareness without my conscious evaluation.

So far the only song I hated and had to skip was Alright with me, which is annoyingly repetitive. Otherwise I feel lukewarm about the songs at this point, except for an occasional moment when a song catches my attention in a very positive way. Let It Rain is one I do like so far.

After watching AI for 8 years, I don’t find it useful to compare the winner’s cds to other idols. They are in the real world now, and competing with the other music out there. I compare music to my other music and the music I like to listen to, and see if it fits in there, and if it makes me feel something I want to feel.

Each Idol winner is completely different from other winners. It can be useful to compare their sales to see how they stack up, since they all have a similar advantage by being on the show, but to judge if I like a cd or not? No. I judge each cd on how it appeals to me, not how it compares to other Idol winners.

So I guess I find it annoying that Kris fans are feeling it necessary to bring David Cook into this, and invariably find that they like Kris’s cd better. Well of course they do, since they are Kris fans to begin with. I was a huge DC fan during season 7 and of course I liked his cd, since he sings in a way that appeals to me. Kris I was lukewarm about and I’m still lukewarm about his cd at this point.

Kris is someone I see as having potential to move me, he moved me a couple of times on the show, I find him a likable person and I basically think he’s still unformed and hasn’t found himself yet, to the extent that David Cook, for instance, already knew who he was as a musical artist well before the show, though he continues to grow and develop of course.

Anyway, listening to Kris’s cd as if he were any other artist on itunes that I was checking out, I am lukewarm about most songs but find places where I hear something I really like. It’s too poppy for me, the kind of r&b pop sound these days that I don’t like, and at times too corny, but overall I might end up buying a few of these songs, and I think he’s someone with the potential to make it and succeed in the marketplace. Also this is a credible cd that he can be proud of for his first big label cd, and his fans can be proud too.

  • maggiemay

tbh i’m surprised this is getting so many good comments. i’m not feeling it AT ALL

Most of the people who responded like that in this thread are either DC fans or a fan of both. Atleast from what I’ve read so far.

Carmine, I can’t imagine anyone who’s a huge DC fan, finding they like Kris’s cd better than David’s, but of course I could be wrong. I find their music so different, I can’t compare them myself, but others might like a different side of DC than I do, or something.

For myself, while I thought the choice of singles was not the best, I love DC’s cd and never tire of hearing it (mixed in with my other music). I would never put down his cd, as I think it is a great cd, for me, as a DC fan, it’s the kind of music and singing I like.

I just was put off a bit to find so many criticisms of DC’s cd in a thread about Kris’s cd, and didn’t see why it was necessary to bring him into it, when they are two entirely different singers and there are hundreds of artists out there to compare Kris to, but whatever.

  • haruhi

I’m a happy person, so I liked the hopping-bunny, young-ish Alright with Me (but, really, the ‘l-o-v-e’ did it); I’m impressed with the random bluesy-jazzy vibe of Is It Over and the “Take-your-time” part was spot on.

I’m feeling the vibe of Before We Come Undone, though the drums sound louder than the vocals at times, but the line, “Could we put our weapons down?” made up for it; and I’m certainly feeling the not-so-subtle angst in Let it Rain, but I must say that I’m not old enough to dislike the Script-penned songs.

The ballads were ok, they were at least sincerely sung. Save for Lifetime because I just couldn’t remember anything about it. And well, I was confused w/ the first part of I Need to Know. It was as if Kris was lying on his back, too tired to sing. Apparently, that was really the case, but for some, the vocals were “raw”; unadulterated. The song got better midway, though. I guess he stood up eventually.

Lastly, I was taken aback by Heartless. While the intro sounds as if Kris was lazy and sleepy, the way it was sung was at least reminiscent to the acoustic version Kris did on AI, minus the weird instrumentation w/c I presume is from a percussion, and the eerie back-up sounds at the start.

Over-all, I think the album is decent. Now,let’s see how it sells in the market, and how it appeals to critics.

  • ksgirlfordc

Just listened to the album all the way through for the second time and am liking it even more! Went back and played Alright With Me a few extra times just to dance around my living room (eek–if the neighbors only knew!). I LOVE that falsetto note Kris hits!!! That was such a fun surprise and it gets me every time. I agree with other posters that this will be a fun song for him to do live. And, I bet Joe King will join him on stage when he performs with the Fray in Chicago next month. I wanna go *pouts*.

I’m a big, big, HUUUGE DC fan (hello? Look at my username!). Love Analog Heart, love Axium, love his work with MWK, been to see him live and LOVE him live. And there are tracks on DCTR that I love, and some I like. But…overall, track-for-track and production-wise, yes I like Kris’ album more than I like David’s post-Idol debut. DCTR took me a few listens to like most of the tracks, while Kris’ grabbed me right away. I know I know, they are two different artists with varying differences in styles. But just saying…it IS possible.

Do I have to turn in my DC Fan Club membership card now? ‘Cause good luck prying it out of my hands, lol! *wink*

Ah oceana, I’m afraid tis the way the Idol cookie crumbles. (Pun not intended.) Each season when the new crop is released into the wild, invariably someone will fall in love with the music and want to declare it the best Idol album evah! Someone who is not so enamoured will disagree. Then you’ll get the lists and the rankings….the comparison posts… Someone with an opposing POV *cough cough, sheepishly raises hand* will suddenly be compelled to play devil’s advocate. And there’s the faint beating of tribal drums in the distance as Jennifer Hudson breaks into that Lion King song again.

oceana, I’m still trying to figure this whole thing out. I love DC!!! I especially love him live! However, for some reason my instant impression of this album was WOW! I also liked LLWD so much better than LO. (Of course neither written or co-written by them.) I have various favorites on DC’s album, but I can hardly find a song on this one that I don’t like, that I would skip.

As I said, I’m still trying to figure this out. The only reason I would compare the two is because they are both my favorite AIs and what I find in common with them is their ability to emote.

Of course this is me, my ears and my feelings.

ETA: cookbunny, me too on the fan card for DC!

  • calimari

Finally getting around to listening to this here at work. I have found that I have not had to skip over a single song, nor have I found any of them “unlistenable”. Tried Danny Gokey’s single and couldn’t get all the way through it. Not sure if I’ll buy it (only Idol CDs I’ve ever bought are Taylor Hicks) but this is a really good freshman Idol CD. They seem to be doing right by him. Good first listen.

To answer the question oceana posed: I am a huge David Cook fan. If I said my real name, some of you would obviously recognize me. And I LOVED Cook’s post-idol album. Didn’t like Analog Heart for some reason. I fell in love with Cook’s personality and his vocals (and the power in his voice). I don’t follow him anymore for personal reasons, but I’m sure I’ll check out his next album.

There’s just something about Kris’s sweet vocals (and good boy image) that appeal to me. The only song on his album that I would skip over would be Heartless. I love all of the other songs. I love, love, love his lower register, and that’s where Cook misses it…everytime Cook sings the low notes he gets terribly pitchy…not that it’s his fault, it is what it is (to quote DC). But that’s where Kris shines.

  • Starr

Cook and Kris are incomparable, but it doesn’t mean fans of both have to choose one or the other. Both guys are awesome. Personally I think that David has a really strong live presence – he really knows how to engage the crowd and get the crowd going – a very valuable asset for a live performer. Kris knows how to engage an audience, too, but he does it in a less overt way. He likes to pull them in with his singing – a desirable quality as well in a performer. Both guys are gifted, and I think they will both do well.

Today the song I am singing is “Bring It Back”. I’m really surprised that I love this song. On the 30-second snippets, it was one of my least favorites, but the full version is so pretty and I love Kris’s voice on it. Love love love the bass line and instrumentation – the intro is so pretty. Good luck to Kris and Jive in picking the next single – he definitely has plenty to choose from. I think they won’t go wrong with “Before We Come Undone” though – it seems to be a crowd favorite. If they go with a slow song, I’d go with “The Truth” or “Bring It Back”

  • hoosiermama

Starr, just went and re-listened to BIB and I think the key to that song is the piano. Kris + piano = WIN. Same goes for INTK. It’s such a nice change of pace from the guitar and it sounds so pretty. I like to think that Kris is actually playing it, but I don’t think he is (we’ll find out soon enough!). As for the second single, I’ve decided BWCU is my pick–love the trippy guitar, lyrics, his voice. It’s a cool song. Yep.

  • Starr

@hoosiermama: yep, the piano is cool but I am talking about the bass line in the chorus – it adds a nice texture to the song that can definitely not be accused of being cookie-cutter. Eg White, I approve! :D

“Red Guitar” is just such a good song. Kris’s voice just spills over like melted butter all over the song. The melody is really nice and I love the piano instrumental part towards the end. This seems to be the song a lot of people are comparing to U2 – which is NEVER a bad thing, in my book.

I think the strength of this album is that while it is being compared to songs and artists who have already done this sound, they are respectable artists nonetheless. I would rather Kris be compared to U2 and Maroon 5 than something else. It also shows the variety in this album. You have comparisons to George Harrison, U2, Maroon 5, The Fray – people who could not be any more different. The vocals though are distinctly Kris Allen :D

  • jga94

I was able to some of the tracks…and I have to say it’s very good in general….considering the rather short period they had to come up with the entire album (and while he was on tour).

I think the album is very representative of who kris is–it’s very nicely put together and the songs aren’t a hodge-podge of singles just hurriedly put together—the songs gel…I even think the album title is appropriate because the songs seem to emit a personal touch from Kris….funny I think LLWD–while a good song by itself–didn’t feel like a good representation of Kris’ singing…..

The album is very contemporary, very alternative rock…very, very nice debut for him I think.

With the proper radioplay and promo,i think this will do good…it may not skyrocket immediately in sales but i think it’s the type of album that’ll have staying power because a lot of the songs have potential to be good singles….

I wasn’t able to hear every song but the standouts for me are: Written All Over my Face,Alright With Me,Before we come undone,The Truth,Let it Rain…

And while people may say that this sound has been done by other artists,I did not feel any pretentiousness on the part of Kris’ singing….the songs are definitely him….Kris has always been like this on AI…he may not have the most distinctive voice or the best technical voice…but he has the ability to bring a song to life…to give it meaning…I think that’s a feet that’s hard to find especially in today’s top Billboard chart hits….

These are the types of songs that –I think–will stand the test of time because it’s about real feelings, real people…

Congratulations…Oh and America did not get it wrong….and I’m not even a Kris fan (Anoop supporter here)…

  • Seeker

Hoosiermama & Starr I’m on board with BWCU as the second single. I agree, it’s such a crowd pleaser. I love watching the Dolphins Tailgate performance of this song. I love how during the 1st verse the crowd is sort of subdued but then Kris breaks into the chorus and the Crowd just Errupts!! I really felt that vocally he was strongest on this song as compared to CSA & WAOMF.

BWCU has some of the strongest lyrics in this album. “Could we put our weapons down, just to figure this out now” So simple yet so real and so touching. Along with it’s beautiful and catchy hook and melody, this song is a great contender, esp after LLWD.

Other Contender is CSA…. This song has had the most spillage into other artist’s fanbase. Non-Kris fans love this song. They are surprised by it and enjoy the hell outta it.

“I think LLWD’“while a good song by itself’“didn’t feel like a good representation of Kris’ singing’ ¦” JGA94

You know, I agree with this statement. I adore LLWD, and I love the way Kris sang the chorus and the sing/spoken bridge. I love the little “Mmmh” before the bridge and other little nuances he’s added to the song. But the song does not do justice to Kris’s vocals & range. The song stays at a higher range, so you really don’t experience his lower register at all (Which I can listen to all day & night). As his 1st single, it had left me wanting…
But now, not complaining anymore coz this song adds great depth and variety to the album. And this song’s Music Video…. Perfect UNF!!!

Songs that I’m listening on loop today – ‘Bring It Back’, ‘Red Guitar’, ‘Is It Over’, ‘I Need To Know’ (I have MAD Passsionate love for these 4 songs) Followed by ‘Before We Come Undone’ & ‘Can’t Stay Away’.

OK…. ‘Bring It Back’, when I first heard it, took me straight to ‘The Frays’ (and that’s a good thing.) But now the more I listen to this song, I’ve completely lost the Frays connection. I just hear Kris with a touch of Coldplay. The piano pieces reminds me of one of my fav CP songs – Trouble, a beautiful dark soft song. “Bring It Back” God! this song is magic!

‘Is It Over’ – “Your tears on my chest”, “So take your time”, Oooh the melodic twists & turns in this song just KILL ME. Pure Golden Sex!

‘Red Guitar’ – His love for his wife just pours out of this song. Love how he sings “Melody”, just this word, the way he sings it, just so sweetly.

I Need To Know…. what else can I say about this song…. I just feel compelled to mention it everywhere, even just the track name.

Oh Kristopher Allen, what have you done….
