With the whirlwind post-Idol press tour behind them, American Idol winner, Kris Allen and runner-up, Adam Lambert head back to Los Angeles to start rehearsals for the upcoming Idol tour and begin preparing their post-Idol albums.

I’m hearing the tour will be more like Season 6–featuring the Idols in duets and threesomes as well as solo performances.   Last summer’s Season 7 tour featured the Top 10 in their own solo mini-concerts, with the performances announced in order of their elimination.

Frankly, I missed the duets and trios last year, and am glad they’re being thrown back into the mix.

Typically, label signing announcements for the Top 2 are released right about now, so I would be on the look-out for press releases in the coming week or two.

Kris Allen appears to be signed to Jive, as you can see here, his single “No Boundaries” is listed on the latest Billboard chart as 19/Jive.

Jive, part of the Zomba Label Group, is known for it’s youth oriented and/or R&B acts like Britney Spears, Justin Timberlake, Jordin Sparks and David Archuleta.   If it’s true, it’ll be interesting to see what they do with Kris, a singer/songwriter type noted for his strong arranging and interpretive skills.

Adam Lambert is rumored to be signing with RCA, home to fellow Idols Daughtry, David Cook and Kelly Clarkson. More will be revealed, very soon, I’m sure.

No matter the label, 19 Entertainment head, Iain Pirie, insists 19 will not play favorites when it comes to promoting their winner and runner up. Clipped from a billboard.biz subscription-only article:

Lambert and Allen are planning their solo debuts with 19 Entertainment, and the company says it’s equally invested in the recording and promotion of both. “It wouldn’t even enter our heads to think about prioritizing anyone over anyone else,” says Iain Pirie, head of 19 Entertainment U.S. “Kris has a very real, organic approach to his music, and Adam has a very contemporary and expressive way of performing. We’re absolutely thrilled with both of them, and they both have their own niche. There’s almost no overlap between the two artists, which is a dream situation.”

It hasn’t been confirmed yet, but many past Idol winners such as Taylor Hicks, Jordin Sparks and David Cook have appeared at the annual Wal-mart shareholders meeting.   This year’s meeting takes place Friday, June 5 at corporate headquarters in Fayetteville, AR.

There has been no official announcements yet, but I’ll be shocked if   Kris Allen, a fellow Arkansan, isn’t scheduled to perform.   The performance takes place at a closed meeting, but is streamed online via Wal-mart’s website.

Daughtry and Foreigner are scheduled to perform Tuesday night at one of the outdoor concerts scheduled to entertain shareholders who come into town for Friday’s meeting.

Excited for the Allison/Adam duet but I want a Kris/Adam duet too. Or some funny Kradam shenaningans at the very least.

  • archieallen

    I’m a Jive fan…lol good for Kris!

  • elephant1212

RCA is REALLY REALLY GOOD!!! there are some incredible artists on that roster

  • CSM

Both labels are incredible! So, it doesn’t realy matter which label they are going to be under…

Excited for the Allison/Adam duet but I want a Kris/Adam duet too. Or some funny Kradam shenaningans at the very least.

I know this is wishful thinking on my part…but last week when MTV reported Kris was backstage singing along to Mad World and strumming his guitar….made me wonder if Adam plans on bringing Kris out out play along while he performs MW on the tour.

Or Kris coming out on stage w. a cape? anything Kradam related would be a highlight for me ;)

Btw, once tour begins, Im hopeful MJ or one of you guys will post the performance order …I need to plan my bathroom and beer breaks during Gokey and Scott(s).

  • AC

does anyone remember more about how the Idols 6 tour was like? All I remember was that the guys formed a “band” and the girls all did something together too.. by the way, i don’t know if i hated that because i hated most of the contestants from that season or what. I think I want a Kris/Matt duet since I know Matt mentioned something about it in an interview.

oh, and the one thing that I would see that it’s good for Kris to be with Jive is that there is no competition to promote him since there’s no one like him on that label.

  • http://kristentheyellowlab.blogspot.com/ Zsus

    Labels have fanbases? Who knew.

I hate the idea of a Season 6 reprise for the concerts. I think the mini-concert format was a good way to let each Idol shine, and, thus, give THEIR fans their money’s worth. As Allen and Gokey showed us, duets aren’t always the best way to go. And I remember the embarrassingly bad “Ain’t No Other Man” the girls did at the Season 6 tour. But, then again, since I’m probably not going to go, since the only Idol I have any interest in seeing perform live is Adam, I should probably just shut up about it.

  • Sunn

Are tour concerts usually released/uploaded on video anywhere?

I would love to see kradison in concert, but since I live one Ocean, once Sea, and two continents away it’s not really very likely unless video is made available. :sad_wp:

I think that it would be nice to have Kris do a duet with Alexis — oh, I keep forgetting that she is #11. I still think their voices would be great together.

I would also really like to see Adam do a ballad with Matt on piano. (not expecting it but it would be great.)

  • lola

That’s good news to both of them. At least now, we can all look forward to what kind of music they will actually be making. I believe they will start recording before and during the tour. I am wondering if Adam will have duets in his first album as Jordin Sparks expressed her desire to do a duet with him.

Are tour concerts usually released/uploaded on video anywhere?

If the past is any indication, there will be more tour videos online than you’ll even have time to watch. And typically, MJ supplies us with many awesome videos right here.

Many MJ readers also post tour recaps. So, for those of you on the fence about going, you can wait to get last minute tickets once you’ve figured out if the order / songs / duets, etc. appeal to you. (This theory doesn’t work for those of you who live in the town where they have the first show. You just have to operate on faith I guess :wink_wp:).

LoL. Right, but I was thinking more of live streaming of a net broadcast perhaps or even an ITune download of the full concert. Home-movie Utube vids don’t really do it for me.

The best you’re going to get are cellcerts–Ricky.org does them for nearly all the concerts. The fan groups will host some as well.

The sound quality of a cell phone is pretty poor, so if you don’t like you tube, you’ll hate cellcerts. :).

Cool. Thanks for answering my question. I guess I’ll just have to do with what comes. Beggars and all that you know.

  • gingerly

I hate cellcerts. They make my ears bleed (tm Clay Aiken). There are however, from what I hear, some that are better than others. I just can’t even deal with any of them.

  • SparklesATL

LoL. Right, but I was thinking more of live streaming of a net broadcast perhaps or even an ITune download of the full concert.

You’re onto something there. As much as AI/19 likes to suck every penny they can get out of the Idols, I’m surprised that they don’t have a pay-per-view of the opening and ending concert. I would probably watch it even though I’m going to the concert. It would make the real thing that much more exciting!

  • lovegoodmusic

I’m surprised to hear that Kris is signed under Jive’s label because his genre appears to be light rock. Jive has mostly R&B artists so this is going to be interesting. And now I’m anxious for his first single to drop (NB doesn’t count).

I’m keeping my fingers crossed that Kris will perform at Walmart’s share holder meeting. Kris is a great musician and he deserves to have lots of promotion.

Blah for the massive amount of corny duets for the Idol tour.

  • jersey

LOL, I think cellcerts are the most ridiculous concept evah! I just can’t get into listening to a concert through someone’s open cell phone!

  • Winks8

I am wondering if Adam will have duets in his first album as Jordin Sparks expressed her desire to do a duet with him.

I’ll personally take Adam out back and flog him if he does a duet with Jordan Sparks!

Now a duet with Allison or Kris would be great… but Jordan…. no thanks!

    Winks

  • Mary102

Ok, I’m happy they’ll be doing more duets and group numbers (they did that more in S5′s tour, which I saw, but I really missed it last year). However, they still better stick to the elimination order (like last year).

If Adam is any sooner than 2nd to last, I will be kind of bummed. I know a lot of people are going to the tour for all sorts of contestants, but, I think even the non-Adam fans out there have to agree that he is one of the main draws, and would be HUGE in the performance setting (since live performances, are, after all, one of his biggest advantages). So having him anything earlier than 2nd to last before Kris would be a bad move, imo.

But I really hope for an Adam/Allison duet – I think that would be awesome :-)

  • HannaB4

Selfishly I don’t like the duets and threesomes idea because I’m an Adam fan. Although I loved the Adam/Allison Slow Ride, Adam usually has to tone himself down to sing with others, and I want to see and hear him in all his glory.

I liked the predictability of the Season 7 concert, so I’ll be anxious to hear the singing order for Season 8. I’ll be taking a LOT more beer/bathroom/texting breaks this season. ;)

  • karenw

Perhaps Sarver and Megan will reprise their duet from the AI finale.

That would be an ideal time for ……. :flush_tb: .. or a trip to the ….. :drunk_tb:

Interesting take on 19′s staging of Adam’s RS Coming Out article.

Most significantly, however, is that because Lambert is instructed by 19 Entertainment on what to speak about publicly, this means Idol producers are on board not just with Lambert being openly gay, but with pushing that storyline as part of his artist profile.

Of course, they only permitted Lambert to speak about it after the show wrapped, but Rolling Stone will hit before Lambert’s first album and tour does, which means they must be confident they can market a gay singer. And that, friends, is pretty remarkable.

Here’s the link to the article:

Adam and Kris both coming out in capes and singing a duet would be hysterical. Of course, there’d be a handful of internet junkies on the floor laughing and several thousand others scratching their heads thinking … WTF?

  • rockvixen

I so wanted Adam to win so he could sing dressed in drag at the shareholders meeting at WalMart. bwahahahaha

  • jammasta

Umm, looking at the artists on Jive and the way those artists are marketed, I’m suddenly alarmed about Kris. I just hope he doesn’t get marketed exclusively to the tween crowd. Happened to my last favorite, too, and now they turned him into a kid singer. I’m a bit depressed about what marketing did to David Archuleta. I mean, Hannah Montana? Get off my Archie. Doubt it was Jive who did that, but still, bleh.

They wouldn’t do that to Kris, would they? Looking at the Wikipedia list, there’s not very many phenomenal names there.

And I look at RCA Records and they make Jive look bad.

Kris seems quite different from the other Jive artists, though.

  • Mary102

But, then again, since Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢m probably not going to go, since the only Idol I have any interest in seeing perform live is Adam, I should probably just shut up about it.

I felt the same way at first. I’m going mostly just for Adam, and, in hindsight, don’t really care much about many of the other singers, half of whom were pretty mediocre (Allison and Kris as the main exceptions). But then I typically go just to see my fav perform that year (like Daughtry in S5, never went in S6 because I didn’t care enough about any of them, and Cook in S7). And just the chance to hear Adam sing 4 songs is enough for me :-)

I agree what made S7′s tour last year pretty good was having them perform in order – so there was a great anticipation building as you got to the 2 David’s at the end (though last year would have been a good year to mix it up, order wise, since imo Carly and Michael Johns left too early)

  • Kirsten

LoL. Right, but I was thinking more of live streaming of a net broadcast perhaps or even an ITune download of the full concert.

I didn’t check too closely, but isn’t that part of the deal with Kris’s iTune season pass? I’m sure that there is something about getting tour videos. Would that be tour videos of his performances or backstage stuff or someting? IDK. They are already there with cameras for the big jumbotron images. They already have a soundboard connection. How hard would it be to capture some images to sell to the “devoted” fans? Badly framed fan vidoes with atrocious sound certainly seem to make the rounds. Throw some half-decent stuff up on iTunes to see what sticks and hound out all the youtube fan vids (and get them pulled) and you are bound to make a few bucks. Or not, I don’t know the costs inolved.

Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢m hearing the tour will be more like Season 6à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’featuring the Idols in duets and threesomes as well as solo performances.

Blech! I know I’m just a bitter Melinda fan, but the S6 style annoyed me to no end. Melinda got something like one solo, one decent duet with Jordin and a joke duet with Sanjaya. Meanwhile, 9th place Gina seemed to be in every second song. I don’t hate the chick, but that was just not right. If 9th place Megan gets heavily featured while Allison gets the joke duet with Sarver, I will have to bring out my angry eyes.

On the plus side, Blake got to do a mini-concert to finish the first act and Jordin sang like 12 songs in a row (slight exhageration) to finish the second act and I could get behind a 30 minute Kris concert, so I’d like a repeat of that concept.

  • twinkle

thanks TKat. i just saw that too and was going to post it. it’s nice to see, despite the Perez’s of the world, some members of the gay community see his “coyness” for what it really is.

and i agree with the author that, although it would have been ideal to be completely open and out with it all along, im glad the label is supporting him. although i dont think they have much choice in the matter. as we have been saying all along – adam was never “IN”.

  • Chipmunk

    Labels have fanbases? Who knew

    LOL!!!!!!!!

  • jammasta

Yeah, I dunno how the Tour should work out. I liked S7′s performances being in order, but it kinda would make S8 tour not very good for a while. Unless Lil and Megan kick it up a notch, it won’t be worth watching until Anoop. Scott and Michael MAY be interesting, but meh compared to S7. But this way, once you get to Matt, you don’t get very disappointed, Matt, Allison, Adam, and Kris are all phenomenal.

If they do what they did with Season 6 and do it more sporadically, it’s going to be a bit too wild for me, but it’ll be surprising and good.

Hopefully it’s the S7 way. Ending with Adam then Kris could be great.

Speaking of labels, are there more artists on Jive? The Wikipedia list is kind of short and underwhelming.

Ahh, savor the great mysteries of Idol fanstruggle! The back story is that the swampy woodlands of Idol fandom are full of legends and aracana about whose record label, according to wildly uneven fan beliefs, either treated a past favorite Idol really well, or really badly. To know why someone fangirls either Jive or RCA, divisions of the same monster Sony behemoth, one would usually have to know which Idols they loved or hated in a previous season, and therefore how they stand to be “proven right” if a *different* Idol signed to the same label has a hit or fails. It’s exhausting and meaningless and yet undying–the Zombie of idol sales discussion.

Popular ways to stoke angst include alleging that the label “my” idol is on holds the one true secret to radio popularity and that the one “yours” is on are a vicious amalgam of stupid and evil out to sabotage your fave’s career.

To make it more complicated, while in some cases loyalty to a particular singer means believing that their label holds all the magical glitter of success in a secret jar, equally prevalent is the belief that all record labels are prone to dark, tangled conspiracies against their own singers. Watch for theories about how your idol is about to be dropped before he is signed, how his record has failed before it has been released, and how radio djs have met in a secret underground bunker to “reject” artist x three days after his singles have gone for adds.

I am ELATED that Kris has (allegedly) signed with Jive. They do a fantastic job of promoting their artists and don’t drop them if their albums don’t go double platinum. And if you listen to Kris’s self-produced album Brand New Shoes, you’ll hear that Kris’s music is soulful and R&B-like (remember Jamie Fox said he wanted to work with him).

I think Jive will try to market Kris less as a heartthrob teeny-bopper and more of a current and relevant artist with a wide appeal (think Matt Nathanson, whose 2007 single “Come On Get Higher” is still in the iTunes top 100 singles downloads list). Kris is most comfortable behind a guitar or the piano, has experience writing his own music, and has that intimate feature to his performances, so I don’t see him taking the Archuleta route.

  • girlygirl

So, I just got my ticket to the L.A. tour date. Feel a little weird about going by myself (none of my friends were interested in going), but oh well. The only duets I really want to see are Adam-Allison and Adam-Kris. For the latter, my suggestion is they do a full-length version of that Ryan Cabrera song they did for the final Ford commercial “I Will Rememer You.” They sounded great on that — in fact, 19E should think about having them record that duet and put it out as a single.

On another note, I’ve been noticing a lot of articles refer to Kris as a “country boy.” Now, I’ve never been to Arkansas, but Conway supposedly isn’t a small town (at 50,000 pop. it’s more than twice the size of my hometown in NJ). And he doesn’t really come across as stereotypical “country” to me. So why do articles describe him that way — simply because he’s from Arkansas? It’s a little strange.

LOL. It may seem that way at times, but not always. Personally, I disliked Jordin and kind of just felt sorry for Archie by the end of his season, but I like Jive. I like how they managed to find something that worked for them (the way they built up from Jordin’s initial small fan base was impressive to me). I know that some people don’t like Archie showing up on all those Disney shows, but that’s probably his management, not Jive. I do think Jive has made him sound more current than he was on the show (remember the “boo” incident?). We won’t even go into how Jive managed to turn Mouseketeers into major stars, one of whom is pretty well respected in the industry now (and the other, they showed great patience to).

To me, it’s not about being proven right. Jive has already proven me wrong twice, but I don’t have a grudge against them for that. They’ve impressed me, so I’m willing to give them the benefit of the doubt.

There is no doubt that RCA is a big and successful label. But, like anything that big, odds are that they will make some bad choices sooner or later and sometimes those bad choices tend to get focused on. Does Jive make mistakes, sure they do. No company is perfect or perfect for all artists.

I grew up in Arkansas and people have always had that perception, some of it rightly so because it is a pretty rural state. This is going to date me, but when I was in high school, a friend’s cousin visiting from California was astonished that we all had eight-track tape players in our cars and that we listened to pretty much the same music as he and his friends. And with that, I’ve officially outed myself as being old as dirt.

They didn’t do it in Season 5 (they wore whatever they wanted whichever night. Elliott got famous for wearing a jersey from each city’s local sports team) while in Season 6 I seem to recall they had frequent costume changes.

Wearing the same night everynight is stupid, IMO. Just imagine having to take care of the cleaning of those costumes every day.

I imagine he’s used to wearing the same costume and singing the same songs eight times a week for months and months in “Wicked” and whatever other shows he’s done in regional companies and on national tours. Maybe as an understudy he got to change his outfit if he went on for the lead. But mostly it would’ve been the same clothes and same songs night after night for a lot more than 50 performances.

  • Mary102

I think this year it works better to keep the performance order the same as the elimination order, because people kind of left in the right order this year (well, except the top 2, but that’s jmo!)

Sure, the first half will be a little more underwhelming, but you’ll have a good mix, with some lively opening acts (Sarver and Megan) followed by mellower Scott sounds, then Lil waking the place up again with that big belting voice of hers, Anoop mellowing it out again with a pretty ballad, Matt doing a mix of both (plus some piano-playing, of course).

Then ending with the final 4 in order, which would make for a really strong final 4 (not to mention, I think those 4 have huge fan bases, no surprise since they made it that far ;-) ) But you know what I mean, it will be a good way to end it.

  • maracaibo

I wonder when is Allison’s deal going to be announced? She has to wait for the other two right? So guess they will announced it the beginning of July.

I hope Matt gets a record deal as well, but I don’t think the 19/Sony BMG umbrella will sign him.
Maybe he can pull off a Jason Castro and get signed with another major like Atlantic or Columbia. Who knows? All I know is that Matt fans like me are going to have to wait at least a year to see if someone is interested in him.
He is so talented and current, there must be someone out there that gives him a chance to record.

my suggestion is they do a full-length version of that Ryan Cabrera song they did for the final Ford commercial à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“I Will Rememer You.à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ They sounded great on that à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ in fact, 19E should think about having them record that duet and put it out as a single.

I sincerely wish they don’t. It’s so placid a song, and pedestrian, and unoriginal. You’re right they did sounded good, but those two can sound just as good if not better doing an edgier more creative song. Ryan Cabrera is such a pet peeve of mine. To me he represents all that is wrong with pop today.

Am I insane in wanting them to duet on “Sunny Side OF The Street” by The Pogues? Yah I thought so.

  • Chipmunk

They didnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t do it in Season 5 (they wore whatever they wanted whichever night. Elliott got famous for wearing a jersey from each cityà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s local sports team) while in Season 6 I seem to recall they had frequent costume changes.

Wearing the same night everynight is stupid, IMO. Just imagine having to take care of the cleaning of those costumes every day.

It would be a nightmare for whoever does the cleaning. Whoever thought of such a stupid idea. So they didnt do it in season 5? There’s hope!

I think Jive does more promoting.RCA is good with there music but i always have to wait a long time for Cookie’s album and Daughtys.Dont get me

I think Jive not only is good with helping the artist album but the media too.
Justin Timberlake,Brittany Spears,Chris Brown, even Archie are all more like

they knew that Jive at media handling and there albums?

girlygirl — there are some people who believe that any of us in the fly-over states (that is, anything between New England and California) are all country. You just can’t convince them otherwise. Everyone west of the Mississippi (excluding California, of course) is country, conservative, and there is no diversity.

Also, I’m a little surprised that 19E is stressing the fact that they will promote and support the Top 2 equally. That kinds of cancels out Simon’s huffy response sometimes that it does matter who wins. If the Top 2 are promoted and treated equally, why don’t they just call them co-winners and end the show at Top 2 night? Just found it a little odd…..I am a fan of both.

  • LaurelG

what? nooo why? maybe adam can put his foot down and demand to spice things up a bit. is it a budget issue?

Maybe Adam can lead the charge again, like he did with lip synching. GO ADAM! Although I’m not really sure how many in this group really care about their outfit besides Adam. I mean, pass out some plaid shirts and jeans and most of these guys are happy.

Adam and Kris will probably do “We are the Champions” as their duet, but let’s hope they might also try “Under Pressure”!

I’m glad for the 6th season (Season 2 had a lot of duets and group performances too) format. That way, I’ll get more Adam singing throughout the show. I really don’t want to wait over an hour just to hear him sing at the very end!

  • BubbleGum

I wonder want to go see the concert for a few reasons.

1.I want to see how Kris handles a huge crowd when he’s being judged like on idol.

2.I want to see Adam’s outfit and stunts.

3.To see if Matt takes off the hat.

4.To see A Matt/Kris duet or a Kris/Adam duet.We already know about the Matt/Scott and Adam/Allison duet.Danny better not go near Kris or I will bring my earplugs and look how pretty Kris is.

BYW-I heard from a idol forum that Danny will sing Dream On? I hope that’s not true but he told one his fans while signing autographs and promised not to scream.Either way it wont be good for him.

Adam needs to wear some crazy outfits and do crazy stunts.

I wonder when is Allisonà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s deal going to be announced? She has to wait for the other two right? So guess they will announced it the beginning of July.

I think part of it , besides hailing from the midwest/south, is the way he dresses, his twang when he speaks, and his lack of sparkle when he interviews- he’s calm and laid back and doesn’t exude any street cred or big city flair. His marrying at an early age may also play a factor. I noticed his grammar is a little off sometimes as well.

In any case…what’s wrong with being a country boy if that’s what you are? He ¨’s a cutie with a sweet personality….very down to earth.

  • itsalleternal

I’m not sure? They probably have the resources to promote both of them though…

I know the SonyBMG country labels will get a break this season, since there really isn’t anyone to go to them (unless they sign someone like Michael Sarver or Megan Joy, which is highly unlikely).

  • revcat

The same guy that produces Daughtry expressed interest in Allison, so maybe she will also go with Jive? Anyway, Archie is cute and can definitely sing, but he is very, very young acting for his age. He still seems like a little kid so its probably hard to market him to anyone older than 13? Kris is also cute and technically probably not as good a signer as Archie, but has a much broader appeal. He’s young, but not childish.

Who wants to see Anoop/Kris do a duet? They look like good friends from the looks of Anoop’s twitter. They been compared (dont know why) all season.

LOL, I think cellcerts are the most ridiculous concept evah! I just canà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t get into listening to a concert through someoneà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s open cell phone!

LOL – I can’t get behind that concept either. Although, during the season 6 concert I couldn’t attend, Sarah gave me a personal cellcert of a few choice moments (Thanks Sarah!). But listening to a whole concert with cell phone reception? I imagine that has to be pretty hard on the ears.

and i agree with the author that, although it would have been ideal to be completely open and out with it all along, im glad the label is supporting him.

Typically, I try to stay out of the Gay!Adam! discussion, because it really makes no difference to me. But, I’m curious about something. I always thought “Being in the Closet” was pretending to be straight, lying to anyone who asked and pretty much living your life in a way so that no one would ever discover your “secret”. So, I’m not really sure how Adam just hasn’t been “out” all along. He sure hasn’t seemed to be hiding anything to me. And, he’s sure not pretending to have a fake girlfirend or anything.

So, what exactly is the standard for being “out”? Is it not enough to just live your life honestly? I mean, I don’t think that the people who actually know Adam in real life have any question about his orientation. So, is the only way to be truly “out” to announce “HEY PEOPLE, I’M GAY” on national TV? Or, do you have to appear on the cover of people with their favorite “Yes, so and so is Gay” tagline?

I’m just wondering how you come out, when you weren’t really in?

(unless they sign someone like Michael Sarver or Megan Joy, which is highly unlikely).

Isn’t Sarver still living under the illusion that he’s got soul? Although considering that he’s probably right now just shocked that he doesn’t have 10 offers to sift through, at some point I imagine he’ll give up the fight and go into whatever box anyone will let him.

  • http://www.irish-wolfhounds.com Buderschnookie

I think this year it works better to keep the performance order the same as the elimination order, because people kind of left in the right order this year (well, except the top 2, but thatà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s jmo!)

I think that if they perform in elimination order it would be a disaster- no one would show up until it was half over. I can’t imagine the public relations nightmare that would cause.

No matter how they do it I’ll bet Sarver performs to an embarrassingly empty house, anyway. I certainly wouldn’t remain in the room while he is up- he would not see 1% of support from me.

  • BubbleGum

Neither can I..and yet as I found out last year, how groups organise them and do it over and over and over and over again to listen to 50 concerts of people singing the same songs all summer over and over and over and over….again

  • Mary102

Guess I’m just looking at it from a “building the suspense” standpoint, rather than a “make the show not look too sucky standpoint ;-) I had little butterflies in my stomach waiting for Cookie last year, and had no problem sitting through even the performers I couldn’t stand last year (Jason Castro, Kristy Lee Cook, etc.) to get to him.

I have this strange feeling Adam would pull his weight to make this (hopefully) a little more lively than a typical AI tour. Someone working those light-up stairs, the fog machine, and the stage elevator lift like him is going to want to make sure he has some say about the appearance and feel of the show. He’s not likely to be content just coming out in front of the mic center stage and maybe making a few stage crosses.

BTW – Michael Johns performed Dream On last year — and it was pretty freaking good :-) I can’t imagine Danny would do it, but then, the song was the one that got MJ the boot last year, and he still came out with it.

Dream scenario would have Adam and Danny dueting on that song – competition style, but I doubt that’s happening :-) Can’t wait for July to come around so we can hear from people going to the first tour dates what the show is like!

And I 2nd the statement that this was hardly the best season talent-wise. Last season was better overall, though, oddly enough, I had no interest in going to the tour last year until Cook definitively won. This year, I bought my tix the day they were on sale, knowing I didn’t care about most of these guys, and not knowing who would win, just because I knew I’d be full of regret if I passed up a chance to see (and hear) Adam in person :-)

  • Chipmunk

revcat: “The same guy that produces Daughtry expressed interest in Allison, so maybe she will also go with Jive?”

Daughtry is with RCA, and Allison is a natural rocker just like Cook and Daughtry, so I would hope she would get signed to RCA.

And I’m still puzzled that Kris signed with Jive instead of RCA. Personally I think Adam is a better fit for Jive because I thought he wanted to make a pop electronic dance album with some rock in it. Oh well, hopefully Kris will get to make music similar to his pre-idol music.

With the RS coming out before the Idol tour, Adam will be pressured to be at his best just to show that his sexuality has nothing to do with his talent. If the AI producers have faith in marketing a gay singer, then I am also ready for one. Just bring it on.

  • Kitwana

I think that RCA is a better fit for Kris than Jive. To me, Jive is the home of “younger” artists marketed at a young demo. Its most successful artists are probably Britney Spears, ‘nsync, Backstreet Boys, Justin Timberlake and Chris Brown. I think Kris fits better with RCA and am surprised that he did not go there.

It would be a nightmare for whoever does the cleaning. Whoever thought of such a stupid idea. So they didnt do it in season 5? Thereà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s hope!

They have wardrobe people just for that. Well, not just to clean but to take in and out and fix rips and tears. It’s a lot worse for touring companies of shows with lots of costumes, including expensive stuff. I think “The Drowsy Chaperone” had a separate bus for wardrobe and that’s not even a big show! I can’t even imagine what “The Lion King” would do. Maybe that’s why they stay somewhere for months, so they don’t have to take the elephant and hyena costumes on the road.

Sports teams are the same, since they REALLY sweat up their jerseys every time they play. And yes, the uniforms are sent for cleaning each and every game day. When it’s a tournament with 16 teams, all 16 teams get cleaning.

Meanwhile, making sure a few shirts and jeans are clean before an Idol performance is easy. I suspect they have more than one set of things they wear every night, and they also have some leeway to change up the tshirt every once in awhile, like Cook did last year. He also ditched the leather vest pretty quickly. Too hot, maybe. I think Archie got rid of his jacket at some point?

But, you know, Idol on the road isn’t Cher or the Spice Girls, with costume changes and pyrotechnics after every number. They generally have a crappy cardboard-and-aluminum-foil set, with maybe a small lift and a ramp. But they’re not dropping in Kiss from the fly space or dressing anybody up like Norma Desmond in “Sunset Boulevard.”

I think that the Jive is great for Kris, and RCA is great for Adam. But in the end, it’s all Sony anyway. And just to be fair RCA has a few other big acts — like Kings of Leon, Christina Aguilera, Dave Matthews Band, Foo Fighters, Scary Kids Scaring Kids, Kasabian, etc.

And if that is where Adam ends up, it a bit poetic — RCA’s #1 all time artist is Elvis — who also favored sink-tight pants, edgy fashion, dyed his hair black and did a wide range of musical genres. (Although I would not expect Adam to end up in the Country Music Hall of Fame! I would mind hearing Adam sing some of Elvis’ old Beale Street blues songs.)

I agree that Kris needs to start moving around. He danced pretty well during the Santana number (but Adam and Allison had it going on on the side of the stage mostly off camera!), so I know the boy has some moves there.

The best youà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢re going to get are cellcertsà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’Ricky.org does them for nearly all the concerts. The fan groups will host some as well.

The sound quality of a cell phone is pretty poor, so if you donà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t like you tube, youà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ll hate cellcerts. :).

Rickey’s cellcerts of the AI tour were some of my best summer highlights last year. It’s not only about the cellcert but you “meet” some pretty awesome people in the chat too!

“I think part of it , besides hailing from the midwest/south, is the way he dresses, his twang when he speaks, and his lack of sparkle when he interviews- heà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s calm and laid back and doesnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t exude any street cred or big city flair. His marrying at an early age may also play a factor. I noticed his grammar is a little off sometimes as well.”

    And then Ross said……
Wow, enough stereotypes, there? I agree with what someone else said upthread. Kris is a country boy to people who think everyone from the south or the southwest is à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“country.à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬

heh heh. Thanks for saying that, Ross. I was just going to let that one go…..

Elvis was with RCA? I didnt know RCA was a company back then lol.

It’s actually before my time, but yes, it was Elvis’ label. RCA (Radio Corporation of America) was founded in 1929. I worked for them once a long time ago, but post-Elvis.

Both labels have great disto and are Sony, so I really don’t think the brand matters. I think that the role that Kris and Adam take in being master of their own destiny is more important than their recording label. Adam really seems to be determined to control his music and bring together the best people to collaborate with him on it.

Much as he did on the show, Lambert says he’d like to shift between genres with his original music. “Obviously we want the album to have a cohesive sound, but I think it can be a collection of different styles with me at the center of it.” Of his creative input on the record, the singer says, “I plan on being very present and involved.”

Kris, on the other hand, seems more passive and almost resigned to following direction.

Allen likely won’t take as many risks as Lambert will on his debut; Allen hopes his album will be pop-rock in the vein of the Fray and Gavin DeGraw. But he’s not concerned. “I think 19 is really respectful of who I am as an artist and what I want to go for,” Allen says. “I’ll have some say, but even if I don’t have as much as I want, it’s OK. I can’t complain.”

This leads me to believe that they’re gonna have Kris do some overproduced crap like Gavin DeGraw’s “In Love With A Girl”. (Sorry if you’re a Gavin fan, but it’s not my cup of tea.) I still hoping for some music that is in the Keith Urban space — or at least not overproduced. But it appears that Kris isn’t up for a fight over it — and I guess that really isn’t his style anyway.

Does anyone remember Kris saying anything about wanting to do music like The Fray or Gavin DeGraw before this? I certainly remember being pummeled by Kris fans when I commented that his version of Heartless sounded like The Fray and being told how different Kris was. What happened to Jason Mraz, John Mayer and doing acoustic music?

  • jadis11

Okay — all this discussing the tour and imagining possible Kradam duets made me go procure my first ever AI tickets! Can’t wait!

And if I have to shut my eyes (and ears) through Sarver, Corkrey, and the lot to get my Adam fix— so be it!

  • SpenserJ

You guys are really into every detail. I donà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t know where this is leading but I still donà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t see any problem in having signed with RCA or Jive.

psst…over hear…. some of us actually have no clue which label is which or which one is better for who. We just talk around the subject about random, stupid stuff, hoping no one notices that we’re clueless. Shhh though, don’t blow my cover.

I think Jive makes RCA look very silly.I mean JT,Brittany spears,Chris Brown, usher, nick lachey? Those are BIG names and it says something about the way they promote there artist. The artist on RCA arent good as the ones at
Jive. The ones that could compete against Jive is Daughty,Kelly and maybe
    Cook.

Yeah because artists like Christina Aguilera, The Foo Fighters, Dave Matthews Band, Velvet Revolver, Kelly Clarkson, Daughtry and Avril Lavigne are totally small potatoes.

    Heh.

  • BubbleGum

Kris has said that he wants his album to be differant than Mraz and Degraw’s so I’m expecting something out of the box.I think he said that he wants to do what he did on the show with alittle more of something unexpected.

  • Hersheydog

Speaking of duets, does anyone know why the Adam/Kris duet with Queen (or Allison/Cyndi or for that matter the Santana medley) isn’t on ITunes?? I would be first in line to buy the performance videos.

hmm, i don't recall either. but at the same time, i read he thought the J. Mraz comparison was "lazy"...only thing they have in common is that they are white guys who play the guitar (his words).

I say yay to fray (somewhere Matt G is banging his head on the wall w. envy), nay to Gavin DeGraw (also not a fan). Not that i think Fray is the model he should follow, but its not a bad option.

However, im still hopeful that kris' style of singing and unique phrasing will make a Gavin style song sound "Kris like"... aka more soulful.

About Adam over performing. Thing is, Adam can do it both ways. Most people donà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t know that about him. He didnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t over-perform with The Citizen Vein, just danced and moved to the music like most rockers do.

Well, he did over perform a bit- 38 seconds at a time.

    :devil_tb:

LOL! Well, I was considering adding that one but decided not to, and I would consider it more performing on it and over it.

Michael Sarver evokes “country” to me…Kris, not so much. Maybe its bc Kris’ style (chuck taylors w. a leather jacket etc) reminds me of the guys I hang out with in Venice (CA).

But then again, I am also the person who thinks Adam looks “boy next (to my) door”.

In appearance no, but in speech Kris appears to be a big city country boy but inside he is anything but considering he says he is the opposite of conservative and is open about “adoring” Adam and he huggles in front of the media in the press room. I am a SoCal gal now, but was raised in Louisiana. I was in musicals, choir, etc and I spoke differently due to diction being a focal point. I got so tired of being asked where I was from as I did not speak with a New Orleans accent nor a southern accent. I feel for Kris, he and Adam both have to fight sterotype crap.

  • SpenserJ

So does this mean that I have to wait another week for Krisà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s idolatry?

Fear not. This is actually a good thing. Even by accident, any extension of press time keeps you in the public eye. So, it may be hard to wait for it, but it might also come at a time when Kris is getting slow press.

  • BubbleGum

I dont like the sterotype for Adam. The boy next door can be anyone.I remember growing up I lived next door to someone who had a sex change. It goes to show you that your boy next door can be anyone.Kris isnt a country boy.I have no idea how that got started. But i think his album might cross over to country but no he wont be country.

  • TKat

Well, he did over perform a bit- 38 seconds at a time.

Well that is kinda tame for the Cat Club but what can you tell in a 38 second clip. It makes me wish someone had a good piece of video of “Kiss & Tell” Live at Club 740.

But Adam is really a good dancer. Look at “Dancing Through Life”, “I Make You Crazy” or the little bit of dancing that we got to see on Idol.

  • SpenserJ

Just because someone is a little “country” does not necessarily mean they like Country music. What’s really important here, is that we find out how Kris feels about Nascar. I mean, don’t all those country folk really, really dig Nascar?

See, I think once we know the answer to that question, we’ll know for sure what kind of CD Kris plans on putting out.

(no, I am not even remotely serious)

    Spense…always the rational one!!

On another note…I really hope I can convince my friend to go to the concert with me this year. I’ve been to 5, 6, and 7 and 6 was by far my favorite because of the format. I wonder how well aware they are that no one would want to sit through the first half of the concert if they didn’t mix it up a little? Ha.

Thank you! I’ve been dying for some Allison news, even rumors. I hope she’s been signed, but again, Jive? Oh God, if they make Allison and Kris sound r&b I’m going to cry. I hope Jive has developed a wider tent than I think they had up to now. i.e. can they handle acoustic (Kris) and rock (Allison)?

For the Fray, hey I love them, and if Kris sounds a little like them, it would be cool. They’re alt rock and I hear some alt in Kris.

I do share the concern about first cds being overproduced. It’s a common problem with Idol records.

Comparisons of Kris to Jason Mraz make me uncomfortable and I’m glad that Kris said that. I have an ever-growing respect for that kid. Jason Mraz is practically a genius and I don’t see the similarities in their style either. Jason’s in a league of his own.

à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“It wouldnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t even enter our heads to think about prioritizing anyone over anyone else,à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ says Iain Pirie, head of 19 Entertainment U.S. à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Kris has a very real, organic approach to his music, and Adam has a very contemporary and expressive way of performing. Weà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢re absolutely thrilled with both of them, and they both have their own niche. Thereà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s almost no overlap between the two artists, which is a dream situation.à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬

    - In plain simple terms, 19E treats both Kris and Adam as winners. That’s nice.

  • cwg509

Oh god, not another Gavin DeGraw-type record! Eww. He’s so boring. But I have a feeling Kris’s record will be bland (but then I thought he was pretty bland on the show for the most part). I guess that appeals to a lot of people. I’ll probably be buying the other guy’s record (and Allison’s!)

  • BubbleGum

There are artist on Jive who arent like R&B.Living things and Three Day Grace,Bowling for soup are all rock alt.Nick lachey and archie arent R&B

    R&B album.

  • oceana

Thank you BubbleGum. That is reassuring to know about Jive.
    ——————-

Kris was sometimes bland but he shows some real potential too. I think he has to work to go beyond blandness, and he seems to have the artistry to do it if he sets his mind to it.

Of course bland is in the eye of the beholder. I’ve heard people on this blog say that Hey There Delilah is a bland song, when I think it’s brilliant in its simplicity. I thought that Kris’s Falling Softly was also brilliant. Some might call it bland but it’s a matter of being tuned in to subtlety and nuance.

Talk about subtlety, I really love Adam’s voice on the soft songs. Yesterday I heard a song on my Ipod and loved it, and I asked my friend “Is that Adam?” and yes it was, it’s a ballad that I forget now (not Mad World) but wow, it sounded ethereal, and I didn’t even know who it was but his voice was unmistakable.

  • BubbleGum

I hope they treat Allison right.I cant say they would. The only reason they are treating Kris good is because he won and they have to promote the winner.
At the same Allison i think can hold up on her own.The girl knows how this
business works and is sure of who she is.

Whatà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s really important here, is that we find out how Kris feels about Nascar.

I think he was sending us secret message already with his snacks. One of my best buds in DC, from Pine Bluff Arkansas, made that Arkansan cheese dip. Only she called it “Bubba dip.” It was so good. Now she was a good ol’ gal with a sweet drawl. Her daddy ran a saw mill, she could handle an ax, and shoot a gun. So cheese dip love is like Nascar is like all we need to know.

Except she was also a gay woman. And a liberrul. And a Clinton supporter.

So possibly knowing Kris Allen’s home town does not tell us his politics or all his cultural preferences. :smile_wp: I think he got some votes for whipping out Heartless and Falling Slowly and some for looking hot and some for being a good church boy and some for hugging Adam and some for saying “Don’ cry momma!” in his home town package.

Now I want some cheese dip.

  • jammasta

Kris being at Jive is still a bit worrisome to me because of the list of artists I saw there, but Allison being there would be a great plus for both of them. I don’t see Allison or Kris going the teen route, I think they’re more attractive to young adults. Still, I would rather see Kris with people like Jason Castro, Jason Mraz….. You know, singer-songwriter or acoustic type people.

  • oceana

Re 19, I believe them when they say that the treat all their clients alike. I’m sure they want them all to succeed, and they have two strong candidates in Kris and Adam. Just like last year with DC and DA. (They’re both with 19 aren’t they? Isn’t Simon Fuller also 19?) I thought that both guys received singular focused attention and all the stops were pulled out for both of them.

  • BubbleGum

Does this mean Allison and Kris could duet on there album? I need that to happen but its wishful thinking.

  • oceana

Bubblegum I agree that Allison knows who she is. She’s a born rocker with a rocker voice and I don’t think (upon reflection) that they’ll try to make her into anything else. Over my dead body, hee.

I’m sure they want her to succeed and will do their best by her. Just as long as they remember that she’s a rocker, rocker, rocker.

  • BubbleGum

The only problem i have is Jive making Allison into a Brittany spears meet pink.I’m afraid they wont see her as a rocker and more of a popstar which she is but she also has that rockstar edge.

They cant really do that with kris.He might be boring but nobody on there label is really like him expect for Lachey and maybe that band Three Day Grace. He’s one of the artist at Jive that will bring a new genre.I think maybe Jive was going for that??

  • oceana

Still, I would rather see Kris with people like Jason Castro, Jason Mrazà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦.. You know, singer-songwriter or acoustic type people.

Definitely that’s what he should do, that sort of music, not identical but in that genre.

It’s funny how we all get so invested in what happens with the contestants after the show. Kind of sweet. I know I do. We see their raw talent and want their originality to be preserved. Usually though the cd is different than what they did on the show, and it’s always jarring at first.

I think Daughtry is one who didn’t veer from the way he sang on the show. He was always pretty clear about what he does.

  • oceana

The only problem i have is Jive making Allison into a Brittany spears meet pink.

Don’t give me nightmares. :flush_tb: Pink, yes, Brittney, no way. Also Allison won’t be a sex kitten like BS. She’s way more talented than that.

  • girlygirl

I don’t think Kris is going to be a pushover. He knows what kind of musician he is, and he stuck to his guns all through the competition. Just because he’s a nice guy doesn’t mean he’s going to let Jive or 19E or whoever turn him into something he isn’t.

I heard him say in at least one of his post-Idol interviews that he wanted his album to be along the lines of what he did with “Ain’t No Sunshine” and “Heartless” — but ramped up a little bit more.

As long as “ramped up” doesn’t equal overproduced and gloppy, he should be ok. He just needs to stick to his guns and don’t be intimidated.

As for Alison, I think the record execs understand she’s a rocker chick, not some bubblegum pop type.

  • BubbleGum

I didnt mean that they would make Allison look or act like Brittany.I meant music wise they would push brittany meets pink.

Allison fans may like this girl. Her voice is the SAME as Allison’s with alittle more raspy.I wouldnt mind Allison making this type of music.

I saw “Jesus Christ Superstar” on Broadway when I was a real little kid. I can’t remember any individual songs from it aside from the Mary Magdalene ballad and the title song though…

  • Susan M.

    @LaurelG,

Thanks for the link. Love it! I know Adam has been saying he wants to focus on his music, but I’ve been way nurturing a fantasy that if he does go back to theater it will be in a revival of “Jesus Christ Superstar,” as Jesus or Judas. And there he said it (if the quote was accurate – always a big if). I would have a hard time imagining Kris with the vocal chops to play Jesus – that is a BIG VOICE role. (Don’t get me wrong, I love Kris, but it would tough.)

Actually, it kind of reminds me of the last touring company production I saw, the actor who played Jesus was about 5’4″. He had a fantastic voice, but we were joking around that he needed to wear platform sandals. The actor playing Judas was easily 6’1″ (sound like the same dynamic?) and also incredible.

I went on an open call audition one time for JCS and it was the funniest thing to see all these Jesuses wandering around the lobby.

  • PattyH

I think that if they perform in elimination order it would be a disaster- no one would show up until it was half over. I canà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t imagine the public relations nightmare that would cause.

You are absolutely right! I know, if it’s in eliminaion order, I won’t be in panic mode if I hit traffic on the way to Staples! Missing Michael, Megan, and Scott would not bother me in the least! But last year, I had to see Chikieze!

Also, I jusy want to say to SpenserJ that I loved your comments about Adam and the “coming out” thing. Do you think you could send them to Perez, TMZ, and to every other press outlet!

Were the BackStreet Boys with Jive during their heyday? I think that the total for 3 of their albums was something like 60 plus million (world wide). If this is true and it was Jive back then…what’s everybody so worried about. I would think that for anyone to go to a label where an artist sells 100 million albums is pretty good.

true, pretty much how he was at his audition. realistic that he isn’t the best singer in the world ;)

i listened to his mom’s interview (slow work day people) and she said kris has never lacked confidence, he’s always been very sure of his music abilities. the judges (and maybe some viewers) have taken his humility as a sign of weakness but he’s very confident when it comes to his talent.

I have to agree. According to the Jive Records page HERE, they still are. Their official page is HERE.

fwiw, I don’t see Kris as a pushover either. I think he’s smart enough to know that their will be some compromises to be made along the way. :)

I think this may explain why Nick Lachey and Archie’s songs sound so much like the sound from the 90s boysbands. Actually, I did not know who was Nick Lachey, but I’ve listened to one of his songs before (“I Can’t Hate you anymore”) and I’ve always thought it sounded like an Archie’s song.
I’m starting to think that’s the way Jive goes with white male artists. And now I remember Nigel said Kris looked like a boysband member. I’m starting to wonder if that’s the way Jive will go with him.. if he’s indeed with them.

Yeah, I thought that Kris/Jesus comment was probably tongue-in-cheek. The thing with print, you never get any context. A joke comes across as a statement every time.

    @LaurelG,

Thanks for the link. Love it! I know Adam has been saying he wants to focus on his music, but Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ve been way nurturing a fantasy that if he does go back to theater it will be in a revival of à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Jesus Christ Superstar,à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ as Jesus or Judas. And there he said it (if the quote was accurate – always a big if). I would have a hard time imagining Kris with the vocal chops to play Jesus – that is a BIG VOICE role. (Donà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t get me wrong, I love Kris, but it would tough.)

Actually, it kind of reminds me of the last touring company production I saw, the actor who played Jesus was about 5à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ²4à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ³. He had a fantastic voice, but we were joking around that he needed to wear platform sandals. The actor playing Judas was easily 6à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ²1à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ³ (sound like the same dynamic?) and also incredible.

I went on an open call audition one time for JCS and it was the funniest thing to see all these Jesuses wandering around the lobby.

Have you seen the Youtube video of Adam singing “Heaven on Their Minds” from Jesus Christ Superstar at the Valley Musical Theatre?

Because selling records isn’t everything. For myself I hope to hear from Kris the sound he portrayed on the show, that is, acoustic rock, singer/songwriter type music, not boy band or r&b. In other words, to be true to who he is, and not some fabrication of Jive producers. So to me, it’s not about how many records one sells, but about being who you are as an artist. Also I don’t like r&b so I hope he does what he did on the show, i.e. arrange songs to be something new. He took Heartless and made it sound like acoustic rock instead of r&b pop. I don’t want him to get lost in the process, that’s all.

I actually hate how they manufacture singers today to make them into what they think will sell, instead of finding what is unique about them. It’s all about profit and money nowadays and that’s a shame. Once it was about the music and the muse.

Hopefully they will let Kris be Kris. Hey I’m not a big fan and shouldn’t care, but I did see something unique in him, hope it doesn’t get lost.

    List of Jive artists:

    http://www.zombalabelgroup.com/artists.html

Not sure how Kris fits in with some of these artists, but then Archie doesn’t fit in with most of them and he seems to be doing pretty well. I don’t know why they placed him with this label, particularly, but it could be because it seems like a “young” label and they feel he’s (as Simon would say) “current.”

I don’t think there will be an attempt to make Kris over into a different artist than he is. I hope not, anyway. I think they are going to try to capitalize on the persona people related to on the show. Personally I don’t find him “boring,” but I rarely find an artist connecting to music in a personal or heartfelt way boring.

I agree with your post, oceana (the only difference being that I’m a big fan). I’d rather Kris do the music he wants to do, and is good at, than the stuff that usually passes for hit music now.

  • wand3rful

kris keeps referencing Aint No Sunshine as a great example of the type of music he wants to put out…ANS is r&b/pop- at least it was on both charts back in the day. not saying kris desires to be an r&b singer, but he tends to infuse his music with a bit of soul.

i cant believe how invested I am in this :blush_tb:….will make hearing his and adam’s albums a lot more fun after playing these guessing games

  • SpenserJ

Also, I jusy want to say to SpenserJ that I loved your comments about Adam and the à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“coming outà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ thing. Do you think you could send them to Perez, TMZ, and to every other press outlet!

Aw, thanks PattyH. But I believe that since both Perez and TMZ thrive on the sensationalistic view of even the most mundane things, my ramblings will be of no interest to them :)

I agree with MJ. Both Adam & Kris are going to have to go through the 19/Sony/whatever machine. They’ll get songs written by the usual suspects, and subsequently analyzed by 40 corporate middle managers. If they’re lucky, they’ll get to put their own stamp on a handful of those songs. And, if they’re super duper lucky, there will be a diamond in that big mountain of coal. Hopefully, they’ll be able to record at least a couple of songs that capture who they are and connect with the public.

I like both Kris and Adam. And, I’d like to be able to enjoy their post-AI cd’s. But, if history is any lesson, those cd’s will not be bubbling over with originality. I’m skeptical. The best I hope for at this point from anyone on this show is that I might like 2 or 3 songs enough to download, and that their first cd will sell enough so they can make a second one that’s actually good. (This wish, sadly, is rarely fullfilled).

  • Susan M.

@linsav, yes! He’s fantastic as usual.

Hey–in a thread yesterday, someone said how Kris sounds like the lead singer from the Fray. I heard How to Save a Life today–and WOW–on the verse it could be Kris. Incredible. My heart sank. Kinda sucks for Kris that there’s a recording artist that could be his identical twin singer.

  • taks

While I can see the similarities in Kris’ music to The Fray, I think Kris has a cleaner sound than Isaac Slade (I believe he’s the lead singer).

In fact, what drew me to Kris initially was the awesome clarity and really pure tone he has through his entire range. It really does make him pop a little.

I recall at some point Kris mentioning that he’s not an R&B singer (which is no surprise to any of us), but I think as someone recalled earlier that you can bet he will definitely infuse a little R&B/soul into his songs. I mean, just look at Ain’t No Sunshine and Heartless (even less obvious recordings like Remember the Time and What’s Going On). His interpretations have always had subtle R&B vibes. Maybe that’s just me though.

I’m excited for quite a few post-Idol albums this year.

  • SpenserJ

It totally worked for Daughtry. Chris was one of my husband’s favorites on Season 5 – I even bought him the cd – yet still, on the radio, he cannot tell the difference between him and the Nickelback guy. Literally, every time Nickelback comes on the radio, my husband thinks it’s Chris. It’s pretty hilarious.

Speaking of YouTube videos, does anyone else get “This video cannot be played” messages more and more frequently? Any idea what causes that? They haven’t been removed; I wasn’t sure if it was a server issue or if they’re being blocked at the source. Our WiFi at work prevents us from playing YouTube videos even on an iPhone, but at home I have the same problem with certain ones consistently.

I just had to post this for those who don’t remember it, a great song:

    ARTIST: Dr. Hook
TITLE: On the Cover of Rolling Stone

Well we are big rock singers, weà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ve got golden fingers
And weà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢re loved everywhere we go
We sing about beauty and we sing about truth
At ten thousand dollars a show
We take all kind of pills to give us all kind of thrills
But the thrill weà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ve never known
Is the thrill thatà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ll get you when you get your picture
On the cover of the Rolling Stone

    {Refrain}
    Rolling Stone
Wanna see my picture on the cover
    Rolling Stone
Wanna buy five copies for my mother
    Rolling Stone
Wanna see my smilinà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ face
On the cover of the Rolling Stone

    Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ve got a freaky old lady name oà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ Cocaine Katy
    Who embroiders on my jeans
Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ve got my poor old gray-haired Daddy
    Drivinà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ my limousine
Now ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s all designed to blow our minds
But our minds wonà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t really be blown
Like the blow thatà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ll get you when you get your picture
On the cover of the Rolling Stone

    {Refrain}

We got a lot of little teenage blue-eyed groupies
    Who do anything we say
We got a genuine Indian guru
    Heà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s teachinà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ us a better way
We got all the friends that money can buy
So we never have to be alone
And we keep gettinà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ richer but we canà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t get our picture
On the cover of the Rolling Stone

    {Refrain}

Not sure if this belongs here or in the headlines thread but it’s about Kris/Adam. Billboard reviews for ‘No Boundaries’ by both Adam and Kris are up. I can’t understand what the heck the reviewer is attempting to say in either of them, maybe some of you will have a better time deciphering his cryptic double speak.

    Adam’s ‘No Boundaries’ Review

    Kris’ ‘No Boundaries’ Review

  • oceana

I love the Fray but I don’t think the similarity is all that strong really. Similar but really different too. Kris has a lilt in his voice, a warmth, he’s not alt rock, he has a chortle or a chuckle in his voice, it’s melodic, I don’t know how to describe it but I don’t see him sounding like the Fray.

  • BubbleGum

i think Matt is more like the fray.I love the fray, one of my favorite bands but i dont see how there similar.I think Kris has a clear voice.I think even elliot mentioned that in a interview. How Kris’s was more clear on the one republic lyrics than the lead singer was.

I got so tired of being asked where I was from as I did not speak with a New Orleans accent nor a southern accent

New Orleans represent! Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢m from The Big Easy too, now living in north Louisiana. I get the same kind of questions up here because I donà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t have that redneck twang nor do I have the New Awlins accent either.

Strange isn’t it? I think that there is a pocket in N.O. that is free of accents. And we can’t pick up another accent no matter where we live.

If Kris moves out to the L.A. area or hangs with Adam a lot (a given at least for this year) I think his accent will soften. Worked for former Kentwood native BritBrit.

  • girlygirl

I like The Fray, but I actually think Kris has a better voice than that group’s lead singer. The latter sometimes gets a little too whiny/nasally with his vocals for my taste.

Also, I tried interpreting the Billboard review of Kris’ version of “NB”. Whatever happened to writing a straightforward appraisal? Reading between the lines, it SEEMED like it was a positive review — not wildly enthusiastic, maybe, but on the positive side. Haven’t looked at the review on Adam’s version yet. Will do that now…

  • Susan M.

Yes, oceana, that’s true but that’s how an artist builds power. It’s just like in film. Once they’ve proven they can open a picture, they get more freedom to choose material and they get their pet projects made. The more they sell, the more freedom they are given. George Clooney is a master at that. He goes to WB and says, I’ll give you an “Ocean’s XX” and you let me make “Syriana,” or “Good Night and Good Luck,” of course they know the “Ocean’s” franchise will make money, and the other films will garner awards, so everyone is happy.

The problem is when they completely generic out the quality that made them stand out to begin with and that is what everyone fears. But as mj said, there will be concessions on the first album, there always is.

Ok, after reading the Billboard review of Adam’s version of “NB”, I think that was a basically positive but not wildly enthusiastic review. Reading between the lines, it’s like the reviewer was saying Adam and Kris were both able to at least overcome the overall blahness of the song. Not enough to make it a killer song, but in making something out of nothing.

  • BubbleGum

I cant get the NB out of my head. Its like the musical swine flu.It can kill you if you listen to it alot.I hate it but my little sister is in love with NB saying how it reminds her of the climb which is her favorite song.

  • storm45701

LOL @ all the label speculation. Reading up around the ‘net, RCA and Jive are units of the larger Sony BMG (soon to be renamed Sony Music Entertainment); much of the division depends on hierarchy and in administrative control. Each grouping has its own management, PR, and creative resources.

The entire Sony Music Group is a hodgepodge combination of older labels that have been aquired over the years — RCA, Columbia, Epic, Arista, Zomba (Jive), ect. ect. Both RCA and Jive are diversified labels, meaning they don’t appear to have a specific genre that they focus on. Both have excellent A&R teams….these are the people that match artists to songs. And both work hard for radio play for their artists.

Since neither Idol is established, expect the labels to take firm control over their recordings and creativity, “selecting producers, recording studios, additional musicians, and songs to be recorded, and (they) may supervise the output of recording sessions”. (source: Wiki).

The goal is to get the artist established, and create hits that will sell.

  • oceana

RCA and Jive are units of the larger Sony BMG

Um yeah, I don’t think that was a secret. But they are different arms with different approaches.

The goal is to get the artist established, and create hits that will sell.

Again, I don’t get your point. Of course those are their goals, but the devil is in the details. Again, “hits that will sell” is not everyone’s most important bottom line. Again, expressing one’s self, being true to the artist, are sometimes more important than sales.

Of course if you can have both, all the better. Of course there will be some compromises, but hopefully not too many. And there are reasons to wonder whether Jive can handle a rocker, i.e. Allison, and not turn her into a clone of someone else, someone more r&b/pop.

LOL @ all the label speculation.

Glad we could give you a chuckle, I guess.

Alrighty then…I have some questions. Please respond! (And I am not talking about independents moving to major labels in these questions).

Every Artist has to make a freshman album when they are a newbee signed to a major label. Are Idols considered even lower than any other recording newbee that they have to be led by the nose. Other new artists don’t bring more “proven” material to the table, they haven’t established anykind of fan base (at least AI winners have a few they drag along with them). They all probably sign the same type of contract. But, I read here that 19 will treat the idols like pond scum and not give them any “good” writers, or producers. I don’t understand this logic at all.

Just like Idol has evolved from a basic sing in the shower show to a good kareoke show to idols that have great musical backgrounds, song writing capabilities and arranging skills shouldn’t 19 feel more at ease with treating them like the capable individuals they are?

It isn’t like we are throwing untrained Danny into the mix. We have a runner up who has 10 years of training and is pretty savvy about the business and a winner who has proven that he is capable of choosing songs and arrangements that suit his voice and talent.

I just don’t see this as being as cut and dried as many others do. Am I too optimistic that the level of talent will make the process a bit better?

No, not just you. I agree. Everyone keeps saying he shouldn’t be stuck with R&B/soul, but I’m thinking the organic(?), acoustic/rock sound with this flavor infused into it would be great! No, not pure R&B/soul, but just enough to give it an edge. From what Kris says are his influences, and how some of his songs sounded on the show, this would be my call. I’m really interested in hearing how it all turns out.

ETA: someone said Kris has a pure voice and I agree. Also, my main concern is overproduction, many of his performances were better than the studios (imo), but I really like most of the studios as well.

Tess, given the statement that was issued about Kris and Adam I think that TPTB all know that these two are yet a little bit out of the ordinary than previous years. They both had uber confidence and Adam took on the producers regarding the lip synching. The way they let Adam have control over things says to me they know he won’t be a pushover. I think that TPTB may be a little more open to how they do things this year like they did with Daughtry. Archie may be strong but he was a minor. Not sure how Cooke thought of how he was handled. But no one before Adam has taken command of the Idol stage like he did. Kris did the same in his own way, just completely different. They both were respectful of the judges and helped the other Idols out. Plus Kris and Adam have both been adamant that they were not competing against each other or others, but against themselves and that they are both winners. I get the feeling that they will indeed be treated a little differently. Call me delusional if you will.

  • JOJOSIE

The fact that Idol winners first albums have to be done so fast is one of the problems. They are on tour and also trying to produce a reasonably good products so sometime they have to do what they have to do to get out of the studio in time for the Christmas shopping holiday deadline, which ideally is in November. It doesn’t allow much time for songwriting, unless something they’ve written previously can be used and they maybe able to co-write on a couple songs if they are lucky. Mainly songs are being submitted now by writers hoping to get songs on the album and the record co’s are very friendly with some writers so their work seems to appear more often. It’s a race to get their CD’s out to the public while the public still remembers them from Idol. Speed doen’t alway produce the best outcome, but I have purchased a few 1st CD’s and really enjoyed them and a few that I seldom play. They really need luck on their side as well as talent.

Well, nothing is ever as cut and dried as we think it is. I’m notoriously pessimistic about Post-AI cd’s, so don’t listen to me! I believe that the lables try to make the best of the situation and give these kids the songs and producers that they think will work. But, like JoJosie said, their need for speed sometimes overrides quality.

Plus, in any phase of the music business, I think having a hit song or hit record is like catching lightning in a bottle. There is no fullproof formula for doing so, or they’d all be hits. A lot of people release music each year. Some of it, we never hear. Some becomes popular. Everyone once in a while, someone comes along to create a career with longevity. Those people are few and far between. The odds are more in favor against success than for it.

The expectations with the AI contestants is just different. Because they have such massive exposure on the biggest show on tv, the industry thinks they can move units, if only they get that shit out fast enough. And, you see the fan predictions about how so and so is going to change music or sell five million records or whatever. A new artist starting out with those kinds of expectations is bound to disappoint people.

When someone becomes a recording star the old fashioned way, you might be hearing a record that took years to make, with lots of creative people in the mix. These guys have to put their stuff out in under 90 days. The odds are against producing a cohesive, creative, organic and fabulous cd in that amount of time. Not that it hasn’t happened. But, for the most part, quickie-corporate art is usually not all that groundbreaking.

I don’t think everyone has to look at it the way I do. I just prefer to temper my expectations. I think Adam & Kris are both extremely talented, and I hope they get to make good music. But, right now, we know nothing about the songs they’re going to select, so there’s no real way to know who is going to do well and who isn’t.

SpenserJ (wasltp), I am late to the party tonight. You are really on a roll and have produced much needed smiles. I still think à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‹ol Mr. S should legall have his name changed to Lucky B*st*rd!

I’ll run that idea by him and see what he thinks :)

  • mawmo

Given that Kris wants to work with Jamie Foxx and Kanye West, I think that he wouldn’t be oppose to an R&B/soul feel to his album. For me, I kinda like the idea of him collaborating with R&B/hip-hop artists.

  • BubbleGum

linsav i dont understand. You think kris will be pushed around and Adam will be Adam? I think both are strong about what there album will be like.

The TPTB didnt listen to Adam. The group numbers were still all lipsynced until the top 5 because it was easier to harmonziie and sound better. No matter what they will control Adam and Kris both. They will be forced to sing songs that lame song-writers have written for them. For the first year Idol controls them.

  • ShariG

Haven’t had a chance to read the comments, but just wanted to say I love this picture of both Kris and Adam. They both look a bit more rested and very happy. I’m excited for both of them and can’t wait for the tour and then the album releases. They are a fantastic final two.

Reading some of the comments, and have to say, Jive has done a great job promoting David Archuleta. I think they are a good match for Kris. They got Archie’s music out on Top 20 radio right away and promoted it with many, many radio guest spots. Since they believe Kris is radio ready and fits into the current music scene so well, I think this is the right label for him.

  • TKat

I like The Fray, but I actually think Kris has a better voice than that groupà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s lead singer. The latter sometimes gets a little too whiny/nasally with his vocals for my taste.

I guess it’s all a matter of taste, I prefer Isaac Slade over Kris. It’s hard to hear how good a voice he has with the electronic vocal production. And Isaac writes some great songs.

Also don’t forget Kris is the one who named The Fray and Gavin DeGraw:

Allen likely wonà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t take as many risks as Lambert will on his debut; Allen hopes his album will be pop-rock in the vein of the Fray and Gavin DeGraw. But heà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s not concerned. à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“I think 19 is really respectful of who I am as an artist and what I want to go for,à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ Allen says. à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ll have some say, but even if I donà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t have as much as I want, ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s OK. I canà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t complain.à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬

We’ll see soon enough, but I hope they don’t overproduce Kris and take away his clean vocal sound. Outside of indie music, County and Opera most of the vocals sound so electronic that I don’t know why we even need singers anymore.

  • ShariG

I’m kind of agreeing with those who are excited about the duets and group numbers on the tour. I love season 7s format of all of the little mini concerts, but this group isn’t as strong as a whole, in my opinion, and I also missed duets and some of the fun combinations of previous tours. I would like to see Kris sing something with both Adam and Allison and am not at all in favor of Kris playing backup for Adam’s Mad World. He is a singer, musician, not the other way around. I want his vocals. It would be fun to have them sing something together again though.

  • TKat

I remember Nigel said Kris looked like a boysband member. Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢m starting to wonder if thatà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s the way Jive will go with him.. if heà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s indeed with them.

Nigel and others keep talking about how Kris appeals to the tween market, so you may have a real good point here.

Whatever Kris makes I will buy.It would make sense for Kris to take the Gavin Degraw/Fray song route. Its what he does best.I wouldnt want Kris to make a album that he wasnt sure with.If he’s sure that he wants to make a Gavin kidn of record then i dont mind.

After watching heartless again and again I think Kris also needs to make a whiteboy rap song for his album.Who’s with me? I think Jamiee would
competely fall in love with kris after the rap song.
i was listening to Kayne’s version and why does
Kris rap better than a recorded rap singer?

I dont see how Kris fits into the tween market.I find more tweens loving Adam.Kris appeals to a more older audience.I dont mean grandmas i mean like college students and mid-age adults.Adam also
seems more boy-band to me.I think its because he looks like pete wentz from FOB.

  • ShariG

LOL If Adam and Kris come out in capes, Adam’s better have Kris Allen embroidered on the back of his. Kris can have Adam on his or “That Guy” with an arrow.

  • ShariG

GirlyGirl, I know your post is a few pages back, but this is in response. I just got home from Virginia Beach where I saw David Cook and Matt Nathanson in concert at the Patriot Festival. I went all by myself and met an amazing number of Cook fans that I had already met at the Idol tour last season. You get to know people if you want to and if you don’t, the whole crowd is really into it together so you don’t feel alone or isolated. It really is fun. Glad you are going. You really won’t be sorry.

  • ShariG

Chipmunk, David Cook changed shirts several times for the concerts last season. I don’t think there is any rule that says you have to wear the same thing every night. Knowing Adam, he will make sure that whatever he wears makes a statement. LOL

  • ShariG

I have to really disagree with any one who thinks Kris has lacked personality in interviews. He is completely charming in a boy next door sort of way. I think there is just a lot of misguided assumptions about Arkansas. I’m from Illinois, but I have to say I was more than a little impressed with the strong support Little Rock, Conway, and the rest of the state provided for Kris. His homecoming was the best I have ever seen. It was heart warming. Kris does play up the heartland thing though, as did David Cook. Being a talented albeit normal guy does not translate into being boring or lacking in interview skills though. He is funny and personable in every interview with a great sense of humor. I think he is holding his own just fine in the media onslaught. Loved him on Leno. Loved him on Ellen and on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon. He was a riot and Heartless left me breathless.

  • Trina

Just to throw a little more confusing in the label discussionà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦ Adamà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s No Boundaries is listed under Jive on Allaccess today.

    http://addboard.mediabase.com/menu.asp

No idea if it’s accurate but when you search for either Kris or Adam they both come up listed as 19/Jive/JLG. I can’t remember who was first switching Kris from RCA to Jive. Anyone remember?

  • ShariG

I also have no problem sitting through the other performers in anticipation of my favorite. Also, most of the time they are really, really good in concert without the judges sitting there and everyone at home with their fingers on their phones. I just heard Felicia Barton who opened for Matt and David in Virginia Beach on Saturday night because she was from that area. She didn’t make it out of top 36 and she was fantastic in concert. Have a little faith folks. Although I would rather hear Ricky Braddy and Alexis before a couple of the top 10, they made it past a whole ton of talented people to be where they are. They are going to be entertaining. Last season Chikezie opened the show and he was astoundingly good.

Kris Allen on side-mouth singing, lip-synching, and calling Danny a ‘jerk’”

On the Idols having to lip-synch for many of the early group performances.
That whole lip-synch thing, we were so upset about it. They were like, “It’s hard to blend the 10 voices” or whatever. After a while, we complained enough and Adam’s pretty good at taking a stand. We’d be like, “Yeah, Adam! Go, Adam!” He would always lead the pack. He was the first one to be bold and say something [to the producers].

BYW-I heard from a idol forum that Danny will sing Dream On? I hope thatà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s not true but he told one his fans while signing autographs and promised not to scream.Either way it wont be good for him.

If that happens (gag), perhaps Adam can pull a “Kara” and come in behind him halfway thru the song and do the big finish! (And then, of course, rip his clothes off, too!) :tongue3_tb:

Just curious–how did you find this out?

  • BubbleGum

Its easy to tell the differance. Also I notice these things because i feel like Idol is very cheap so i follow close the results night ever since s6. Last year they lipsynced until the final 5.In s6 they didnt stop until top 6.This year they stopped lip syncing at top 5.If you look really close you can tell the differance between lipsyncing and real singing.

  • ShariG

I agree with you Oceana about Jason Mraz being in a league of his own with his own style, and would also say that Kris Allen is in a league of his own, too, with a distinctive style. Regardless of who produces his first CD, I hope, as Kris has expressed that he hopes, they understand him as an artist and will know the business end to produce something unique and appealing. I think they have done a phenomenal job with Jordon Sparks and Archie. Kris is different, but they have a wide variety of artists on their label.

  • ShariG

Oh I can see Adam as Judas. It is actually Judas’s story and the really big numbers are his. Jesus needs a deeper voice though. Still there are some great songs from that musical. Adam could be either role, but with his great range, he would rock Judas. I can’t actually see Kris in musical theater at all. Although I saw some of his early work with his church choir on you tube and he was emoting pretty darn well.

  • Susan M.

BubbleGum, I’m sure you were joking, note your lol, but many people won’t catch the exaggeration from “Adam took a stand” to “… how much he screamed at the producers,” (which was never remotely indicated). That’s how rumors run amok.

  • storm45701

Some of the Idols have had to turn out their albums in 6 weeks. The market demands that the album come out for the Christmas season. Hopefully, TPTB are lining up producers and other creative teams and getting material selected (I’m sure there’s another Dioguardi song out there somewhere…LOL). If Adam and Kris are smart, they will start WRITING NOW. Daughtry said he spent the nights on the Season 5 tour writing songs and music while everyone else went out and got drunk and partied up.

Both albums are sure to be more pop than artistry. That’s simply the nature of the Idol beast. A lot is going to be riding on who has been assigned as the producer(s) of each album. If someone comes in thinking Kris is “boy band” or that Adam is “rock opera” then there is going to be hell to pay.

For a first album, HITS,HITS,HITS are the most important thing. Move those units, establish a radio presence, and have identifiable songs to call your own. It’s a compromise — be an artist, yes…but COMMERCIAL artist first.

  • ShariG

Hi Cricket. I agree. I hope they don’t over produce Kris. RCA did that a bit to David Cook. I hope they let us hear the voice and the uniqueness. I agree about the purity to Kris’s voice and the lilt or whatever the term was that a previous poster used. It sets him a part. I would recognize his voice on the radio. It has it’s own quality that I really, really like.

  • AC

I think both Kris and Adam will have to both give and take on their debut albums but both seem happy with it since they know what they’re getting into. Looking at David Cooks debut album, he cowrote a lot of songs and you can tell that the sound was mostly what he was going for. A big reason for that is Clive Davis (sorry, I really dislike the dude) was no longer the head guy starting that season and I think that’s the beginning of a shift in how much say the winner and runner up gets. I see Adam possibly toning down staying how he was like on AI and not really like how he was pre-idol because they want to position him in the international market and they probably dont want to scare people off the first album. Kris reminds me of David Cook in the sense that both showed what kind of album they would make and sound like throughout the season and the label supported that when he made his album so I don’t see why they wouldn’t do the same for Kris.

I may be wrong, but isn’t this the first season that they lipsynched the group numbers? I thought they were live, previously. I was thinking it may have been because of having to guide Scott around. Maybe it was just one more thing they needed to think about and lip synhcing made it easier?
Kris was there, I’m sure he knows what he is talking about with his lip synching comment and Adam.

  • JOJOSIE

I’m sorry but David Cooks album IMO wasn’t much like he was on Idol. On Idol it was all about his voice and on his Cd you can hardly hear his voice as there is too much instrumentation. The guitars just drown out the voice that I want to hear. I realize this kind of rock music is what David likes, but certainly not what he showed on Idol. If I’d known I might not have bought his album. I’m not a big fan of acoustical but one or two on an album makes it more interesting for me. I hope Kris can pull off what he did on Idol as few winners have. The record business is tough. It’ll be interesting what they do with Adam as he’s kind of a chameleon. The both have talent, now they need luck.

I may be wrong, but isnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t this the first season that they lipsynched the group numbers?

I did a little research and apparently this IS the first season they have lypsynced the group numbers, however,:
“…an Idol source who tells us, à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“They do prerecord the chorus stuff. And they sing live their solos (in the group song) and sing over the track on live TV with the band playing live as well.à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬

(I think MJ addressed this in her Idol Headlines back in March, too.)

  • jlc

    Benson has produced Daughtry.

  • cay

The Benson guy said he prefered to work with Allison and thinks she might be the star of this season. He said in another interview that he was likely to work with Adam. So now he’s helping Kris too? He’s a “Idol” songwriter/producer. He works with them all. They are all going to get songs from the Idol pool. We’ll see who gets lucky with a hit. It’s going to be a crap shoot.

I wouldn’t worry about names thrown about. Their albums will be the typical piece meal stuff. Each song will have a different writer/producer, and you never know what will make the album. But realistically, we all have to expect them to use the usual people with the usual stuff for their first album. Times are tight.

  • TKat

I don’t know if it is good or bad, but I doubt Kris will be making many artistic decisions if this is true.

Howard Benson is a will known and respected producer. He did Daughtry’s albums and Kelly Clarkson’s last album, along with a lot of other acts. He has a reputation for getting projects done fast and producing quality work.

Lauren Christy is part of The Matrix a songwriting-producing team. Here the link to Wiki with a list of what they’ve writen.

  • TKat

I am not certain that the post about Howard Benson and Lauren Christy is anything more than a rumor. They both gave MTV comments about what they thought Kris should do so that might be where it started.

    Benson on Kris’ record:

Howard Benson, who produced both of Chris Daughtry’s albums, also saw a pop-rock vibe in Allen, likening him to Jason Mraz, John Mayer and the Fray. But he warned Allen against making songs that would create a radio listening experience that is too generic. “When Jason Mraz writes a great pop song, he writes a smash,” said Benson. “Kris I like a lot, but he might have the hardest job. It’s easy for him to make a passive record. You need a real active rock record.

    Benson on Adam:

Howard Benson, who produced both of Daughtry’s albums, as well as discs by Clarkson and My Chemical Romance, raved about the 27-year-old singer’s potential. He emphasized that Lambert should embrace his theatrical side, dismissing industry chatter that the singer must reinvent himself to appeal to the widest possible audience.

“You need to make the record that is true to him,” Benson said. “That’s what works on every one of these Idols.

Benson said Alison could be huge and also thinks Megan has potential.
And yes, Benson was the producer who doubted Gokey:

In fact, Howard Benson, who has worked with Chris Daughtry and Kelly Clarkson, doesn’t think Gokey has a future in the industry. “The hardest record to make is Gokey’s record, which is why I don’t think he’s going to make one,” Benson told MTV News. “It would be very tough to make a record with him.

“I don’t think he established who he was at all,” Benson continued, citing a prevailing worry among record execs. “He has this great, soulful voice. But he dresses like some guy that’s in a bar somewhere. He doesn’t look the part.”

LOL. That would be interesting if Adam and Allison also signed with Jive. Probably better if they are on separate labels (more “oxygen”), but I like Jive and I like Idol successes so I’ll cross my fingers.

Everyone keeps saying he shouldnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t be stuck with R&B/soul, but Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢m thinking the organic(?), acoustic/rock sound with this flavor infused into it would be great! No, not pure R&B/soul, but just enough to give it an edge.

Sure if you like that r&b sound, but many prefer the rock sound. Kris didn’t sound r&b to me on the show (which I might try to define as lots of riffs and vocal gymnastics, a loud mechanical drumbeat, for starters). I don’t think he is an r&b artist and I hope they don’t try to make him into one. I think rock has plenty of “edge” and it’s not something that r&b has a patent on.

I’d rather see him go in the direction of James Taylor or Jason Mraz than Kanye West, is what I’m saying. BTW I can’t stand Kanye’s music or Jamie Fox’s either. So I hope Kris was just being polite by saying that he wanted to work with them. I’m just one opinion, a lot of people like r&b so they want him to go in that direction or wouldn’t mind it, that’s fine. I won’t be buying his music if that’s the case but that’s just me.

Bubblegum, just wondering if you noticed Kris during Renegade with the mic stand action. I think he moves really well. When he is at the piano/keyboards, or playing the guitar it is pretty hard to dance, but the boy can move.

I really noticed this when watching the Finale over (and over) again. When he’s not holding the guitar, Kris cannot STOP moving to the music. During the group numbers, and especially during We Are The Champions, you can just see the music coming right through his body.

  • NewAIFan_S8

I also think Kris will have a slight R&B flair on his CD, if he has anything to say about it. Not the current style of riffs everywhere, etc., but just more of a swing-style rhythm, since he says that his musical idols are Michael Jackson and Stevie Wonder. If he’s able to pull those influences in, it would be really fun to listen to.

  • Mary102

Just going back to the tour order, I’m thinking back to past years, and, when you think about it, the first people are always going to be the less popular ones — that’s why they got eliminated so early!! Didn’t we have Ramiele and Chikezie last year? (seriously I had trouble remembering their names just now)

The top 4 or 5 are always the ones that most people are coming for (especially the top 2 – hey, that’s why they wound up on top in the first place – and Adam loves the top (sorry, just had to go there!))

But I think this year, even with the same order, you have a lot of fans of each one (I know people where I live who loved Sarver (believe it or not), Anoop (lots of Anoop fans out there), Megan Joy for her quirkiness, Scott for overcoming his disability (hey, I even threw him some votes early in the season), and Lil (big voice). So, I think it will hardly be disastrous to just keep with the order.

I keep going back to my fears of the S6 Tour – hearing that Blake went before intermission. If they did that to Adam, they would seriously lose a good portion of the audience. Maybe put Allison or Matt or Anoop before intermission, but NOT Adam (or even Danny, who of course has a big following).

Maybe it would be wise to start the show with EVERYONE – a big group number (like the finale show) – that way you draw more people in to the beginning of the show who would otherwise miss the first acts. Just some thoughts.

I wonà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t be buying his music if thatà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s the case but thatà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s just me.

oceana: I love James Taylor and what I’ve heard of Jason Mraz and personally prefer the rock sound. I agree I don’t want the vocal gymnastics (it’s not Kris), or the mechanical drumbeat. Maybe I don’t listen enough to R&B to know what it truly is. LOL. I did love Kris’s “Heartless” and “Ain’t No Sunshine” though and felt/heard a lot of soul(?) in each of those.

ETA: what NewAIFan_S8 said. I think she explained it better than I. LOL.

I find it hard to believe they won’t make Adam as much the headline of the show as possible in spite of him being runner-up. I could be wrong.

That’s kind of my sense of what they did last year. Archie just had such rabid fans at the shows (Miley Cyrus-like, teeny bopper screaming kids!) And in fact may have even gotten more cheers than Cook.

So I would sort of equate this year with last, where both of the final 2 were very popular and great ways to end the show. And also very different performers, style-wise – which is another great way to end things.

Yeah but last year DC went last the way the winner always does and the group number closed the show much like previous years. They did nothing out of the ordinary. The way the crowd reacts is out of TPTB control .This year I fully expect them to find SOME way for Adam to be highlighted at the end, and I’m not talking a group number either.

The tour wont be a Adam concert. Its a AI concert.I want to see Adam but i better also see Kris and Allison.Kris should close the tour with heartless or
aint no sunshine.Adam fans can whine but the winner closes the show either that or they do a group number.
