Ahhhhh! Kelly Clarkson covered “We Found Love” by Rihanna last night in Virginia Beach, Virginia. The tune was just the latest in awesome fan-requested covers by the American Idol original flavah winner! It’s easily my favorite pop song of the year. I might have requested it myself. Kelly sounds terrific.

PLUS, Chart Show tweeted from a Sony Conference in London yesterday, revealing Kelly will release a Greatest Hits album by Christmas. It will have new material on it! Kells was recording over Labor Day with producer Greg Kurstin (“Stronger”).

It’s all making sense now…

Does “Greatest Hits” count as the last album in her contract?

Crotty Kid: Does “Greatest Hits” count as the last album in her contract?

No, only full studio albums will count so Kelly’ll owe RCA another studio album before that deal’s fulfilled.

EDIT: Though, there may be a provision that a greatest hits album counts if it sells a certain amount.

LOVE Kelly singing this. There’s character in her voice that studio robovocals can never touch.

That was my question too. It presumably depends on how it was written, but if it has new material, then I’d say it’s more likely to count than not.

    Interesting times.

As for the song, the vocals were lovely but there’s too much distortion in the instrumentation for me to get a good read on it. It felt a bit peppier than I thought the lyrics really warranted, though.

Hmmm, a Kelly Greatest Hits CD sounds like a wonderful stocking stuffer…and one for me!

Huh? I’d always heard greatest hits albums are a great way for the label to wring out the last option of a deal. We’d been anticipating a greatest hits album from Kelly as her last album for years.

    She rocked that I’d say.

Not sure where you guys are getting it might count based on sales or if new material is listed on it. Greatest hits can have provisions like:

Greatest Hits Packages and Compilation packages are in a contract, but it deals with how many can be released during the term of a contract and post recording contract. So, Kelly’s contract may allow her to release a Greatest Hits and a Christmas album without it counting towards her pick up options. A standard contract will usually have 2 greatest hits packages available with 2 compilations after the artist has left the label.

Kelly’s advance for this package will most likely be relatively small also. RCA pays out very little in terms of advances for Christmas and Greatest hits packages.

The goal of the packages is to double dip on popular songs since it is nothing more than getting those songs back out there. When they say new songs were recorded, it doesn’t mean they will necessary be genuinely new. Some artists will release “new recordings” of some songs with arrangements they have performed live that were a hit with fans. This give collectors another reason to buy a song they already have. Plus, with a majority of her demos being leaked out in the past, it is a very strong possibility they will simply remaster one of those as they did for the Stronger album.

I meant to keep it short and sweet, sorry for the tldr

This GH won’t count towards her six albums owed, even with the new recordings.  She apparently said last night on stage that she just finished recording two new tracks for a “new album” which would presumably be this GH album.

I said this in the Headlines thread yesterday, but I think this probably marks the end to the Stronger era and they’ll be moving on to one of the new songs off this GH package before the end of the year.  The timing is right for this album and she has enough legit hits to put out an album like this.  I also don’t think this will push back plans for the next new full length album (prob late ’13 or early ’14), this’ll just be the bridge between the two and it won’t appear that she completely fell of the face of the earth in between albums like it always seems she does.  Hopefully no “comeback” single like what usually happens every 2 years.  lol

About the cover, We Found Love is a really basic song, but I can’t help liking it.

Here’s the guy that requested it last night:

    Christopher Brewer ? @ChrisBrewski
@kelly_clarkson I am unable to make it due to the NAVY sending me to sea but We Found Love– Christopher Brewer #kcrequests #virginiabeach

The guy that took this video (http://youtu.be/U918kD7PgXg) must be friends with the guy, or at least know him, by the reaction.  “I can’t believe they just did Chris Brewer!  He’s out to sea.”

I don’t think it’s that likely the greatest hits set will count towards the albums Kelly owes her label but I wanted to recognize the possibility that it would based on sales. There was a provision in Tim McGraw’s contract with Curb that any greatest hits set that sold 1.5 million copies or more would count towards the albums he owed them. It was a disputed provision as far as applicability but it was there. I can’t rule out the possibility there’s a provision like that in Kelly’s contract.

    awesome! I’ll buy it! :)

I used to think that Greatest Hits albums are released only during the twilight years of an artist’s career; that it is probably the last chance for record labels to make some more money from an act that is soon to fade. But I figured out that having a greatest hits album is a usual practice in the recording industry after an artist has completed four or five studio albums.

Thus it is all the more impressive for Kelly Clarkson because she is releasing a GH album and yet she is still as active and relevant as ever in the music scene! Kelly Clarkson has maintained a steady presence for the past ten years due to the versatility of her music. She can thrive in top 40, HAC, AC, Country, and even in Dance and Smooth jazz formats!

I am thrilled about this career milestone for Kelly and I’m sure that she’ll release more awesome music in the coming years!

PS: Now I’m wondering what a Carrie Underwood greatest hits album will look like when all the singles in her discography are ‘great hits’ and have reached either number one or two on the country charts. (Just to be clear, I am not trying to start a feud as to which Idol champ is better. Kelly and Carrie are two of my favorite singers out there and they deserve all the success that they are getting!)

I had no idea Kelly was releasing a greatest hits album! I already have her greatest hits, but I buy anything Kelly sells so I will get it. She has the best voice in the business, and she is an awesome person. I hope this won’t push back her new album though. I was looking forward to her next album in late 2013.
