American Idol judge, Keith Urban, told Ellen DeGeneres on her afternoon talk show show today that he’s replacing the departing, Randy Jackson on the judges panel.

Erm, I’m pretty sure he’s kidding.

On who will win the competition this week? Keith thinks Candice Glover has the edge, but Kree Harrison is an incredible singer. He’s hedging his bets!

Watch the interview below.

  • HopeForMusic

Let it be true that he’s replacing Randy. If he’s teasing, that’s a cruel joke to get our hopes up. lol
Keith showed such a fun personality in that short interview. I honestly think that if he wasn’t caught in the centre of that caustic feud between Nicki and Mariah, he’d show himself to be a really, really fun judge. JMO of course.

  • http://twitter.com/amym1972 Amy

And the pimping has already started. Ugh!! Can’t the judges just stay neutral & recognize both girls for how amazing they are??

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Ann-Freeman/100000029986611 Ann Freeman

Hope Keith is kidding also…he’s a fantastic judge. I want Keith back next season.

  • JordinFan

Off Course Candice has the edge, it’s because the judges gave it to her. I hope Kree kicks her butt in votes.

  • Black Rose Films

I do love me some Keith. Obviously coming in Kree is the underdog because people have not been giving her much credit for her performances. Candice might have the edge but I got a feeling this will be the underdog’s win.

  • H.A.

If FOX Chairman Kevin Reilly didn’t make this announcement yesterday at the conference why would Keith Urban make this announcement today. I think he’s kidding at least I hope he is.

  • lollamape

meehhh.. Seems like he was Kree’s biggest stan until 3 weeks ago and then immediately he’s very critical to Kree now.. Another producer’s pet with script.. I thought you’d be different Keith.

  • tati83

I bet Keith also thought Angie had the edge on Kree and we all know how that turned out. Come on, Kree. Baby girl Bring it tomorrow :)

  • http://twitter.com/Miztig Miz

I think he was a fun and productive judge.

  • http://twitter.com/Miztig Miz

I hope Keith is really staying. I truly enjoyed him judging. He’s kind but honest and has a good sense of humor.

  • http://twitter.com/tinawinabina Tinawina

Every year there is talk of an “underdog” and “pimped” ones but a lot of the times its just weird conjecture. Like I remember towards the end last year Phillip morphed into the “underdog” the judges hated while they supposedly “pimped” Jessica. I was like… um… what???? LOL

Sometimes it makes sense, like Kris vs Adam, Adam was indeed a favorite all year even if he deserved to be.

This year I would say both ladies took turns being favored and both ladies got bussed at points, so its not as clear a case. Kree has been getting the business for the last 2 weeks though. But honestly, if anyone was pimped this year it was Amber IMO.

  • BonnieDee

Hopefully now that the other contestants are gone, voters will realize how weak Kree’s voice is when there is nobody left to compare it to but the amazing Candice.

  • JordinFan

I hope he leaves. He was a big fan of Kree and then he turned on her. Whatever.

  • BonnieDee

Keith got a raw deal this year with the whole trainwreck of a Minaj.

  • BonnieDee

Just because he is honest about a performance doesn’t mean he “turned on Kree.” It means he told the truth.

  • elliegrll

Keith carried the producers line just like everybody else. He also made it pretty clear that he doesn’t like getting booed by the audience, and that effected what he had to say.

I do think that he appeals to the AI crowd who had a problem with Nicki Minaj being on the panel even before the first show aired. To that end, his staying pretty much means that nothing will change, and the ratings, especially among younger viewers, will continue to fall.

  • HopeForMusic

Personally, I don’t have a favorite this year. Both girls are amazing in their own way, and if they put out music that I enjoy, I will probably buy both of their music. Now, let’s see how the performances are tomorrow night, and then determine if their is indeed a front runner.

  • elliegrll

Candice has had great performances, and arguably, she had the only “Moment” during the season.

  • JordinFan

A performance? He’s been giving her bad critiques since the top 5 began, and for no reason. It’s blatantly obvious that the producers are handing Candice the win.

  • Axxxel

Sometimes performance doesn’t even matter… Crystal Bowersox was fantastic during the top 2 finals but she lost to a more pitchy Lee.

  • Axxxel

Am not sure whether the producers want Candice to win, but they want her at least in the top 2.

  • http://www.etsy.com/shop/AdorablyHooked Gwen

EVERY year the judges appear on somebody’s talk show and talk about the person they think has the edge. Somebody has to have the edge. Is this or is this not a competition? At the end of the day, Idol is only a televised singing *competition*. Someone will win; someone will lose. Keith will hedge his bets. He could be right; he could be wrong.

  • lollamape

Keith really began to piss me off when he said ‘USA must vote for Candice or call a doctor’. Like what? we’re sick if we don’t vote for Candice? That blatant pimping and statement was quite offensive to fans of Kree and Angie.

Obviously Candice is great singer.. and arguably the best one from this season. She with Kree has been my top 2 since top 10 show. But tbh i prefer Kree’s tone and rooting for her, so it doesn’t mean i’m the sick one right?

  • fuzzywuzzy

“Keith carried the producers line just like everybody else. He also made it pretty clear that he doesn’t like getting booed by the audience, and that effected what he had to say.”

    Exactly.

  • JordinFan

Just vote your heart out for Kree… thats all we can do at this point. :(

  • lollamape

but if i vote for Kree i don’t need a doctor right? LMAO!!

  • songsungblue

I have to disagree. I don’t find her voice weak at all. I think she’s very skilled at modulating her tone. Everything doesn’t need belting, IMO. I appreciate Candice’s talent, but I’d purchase Kree. I also think she’ll win. Just a hunch.

  • 1rollbounce2

No horse in this race. But a female winner and a black winner would kill a couple birds…still wish a nice lookin’ black guy (who isn’t gay) could win this thing! (not that there’s anything wrong with that)

  • BonnieDee

Kree has no range. She’s very limited.

  • H.A.

He has a weak personality. If he couldn’t hold his own amongst the trainwreck than he doesn’t deserve to be on the judges panel.

  • http://twitter.com/jerryt9789 ?Let’s Run Away?

I think Angie, Candice and Kree all deserved to win. I don’t think one is better then the other, all 3 are great vocalist with 3 different styles in the way they sing. Imo what it is coming down to is the type of singer people like to listen to at the moment, Angie is Pop/rock, Kree is Pop/country and Candice is jazzy R&B. If Idol wasn’t scripted and the judges were paid to speak the truth instead of reading a script, Kieth would agree with my statement but that is just my opinion ;)

  • BonnieDee

What Keith was saying was that performance was absolutely outstanding and he was joking about the doctor thing.

  • http://twitter.com/Sassycatz Sassycatz

Keith always has such a dry delivery when he’s kidding around, I have no idea whether he’s kidding or not.

  • BonnieDee

Maybe he knows what’ he’s talking about. He is successful in the genre Kree aspires to be in.

  • http://www.facebook.com/pat.humphries.54 Pat Humphries

I agree, but I am not quite sure Kree is the under dog. I have a feeling these 3 girls have been trading the #1 spot all season. If they both do well tomorrow, I think the country vote will be the edge Kree has.

  • lollamape

Obviously you don’t like Kree and it’s fine.. but said Kree has no range? that statement was ridiculous tbh. but yeah that’s your opinion and not fact.

  • http://twitter.com/LadyJ_88 LadyJ

It’s a competition. Someone has to have the edge and there’s no problem in sharing an opinion. No one takes these judges’ comments seriously anyway. I don’t know why some of Kree’s fans are so agitated by Keith’s opinion. I’m sure if he had said Kree had the edge, there wouldnt be this griping from her fans. And why wouldnt Candice have the edge? She’s had incredible performances and moments throughout the season amd is coming off of Somewhere as her last performance. Just vote for who you want to win and get over this pimping/bussed thing. It’s misguided and annoying.

  • http://twitter.com/hawkscool8 John S

And just a few weeks ago, they wanted both Kree and Candice out ;)

  • http://twitter.com/nsideguy25 Chris

I think kree is still the tco. It’s all like its a created strategy.

  • H.A.

Every year there is talk of an “underdog” and “pimped”

Which is probably why Kree will win this. Fans have to show TBTB that they don’t like the pimpage even though that Idol may deserve the pimpage. I have a feeling this might be the year that Idol/Jimmy may not put all their eggs in one basket and the “winner” may not be getting all of the full promo machine behind them. JMO.

  • songsungblue

She has a wonderful range, but if she WAS limited – it would make her abilities even more astonishing. She has a heart-breaking tone and primo interpreting chops. JMHO of course!

  • HopeForMusic

I agree with elliegrll. Kree has a lovely voice, and probably will do well in the country world, but hasn’t had a stand out performance. That said, I enjoy both girls for their very different, but equally enjoyable qualities. I’d be happy if either won.

  • HopeForMusic

I agree. I would only fault the judges, Keith included, if one girl obviously stands out and the judges pimp the other. I hope they both bring their very best game, and the right one, based on their performances, wins.

  • HopeForMusic

I don’t agree. Keith has a great personality. I think that the only way to “hold his own” in this tranwreck would necessitate behavior that just wasn’t in him. I think he was very productive in keeping things as calm as possible. I honestly could see this season having gone so much worse, without his calm and enjoyable demeanor. I’d love a chance to see him work in a more professional environment.

  • HopeForMusic

Yes, yes, yes to everything you said.

  • curly_yenta

He was totally joking about replacing Randy…. he even snickered after he said it.

  • EB

Riiight. Bye, Keith! And Randy, Nicki and Mariah…

  • Liteasy

I disagree – Kree has a perfect tone voice and I will be very surprised if she doesn’t win.

  • H.A.

E online are reporting Keith Urban’s ‘replacing Randy’ story as him joking.

    E! Online@eonline
LOL: Keith Urban makes a BIG announcement about who’s replacing Randy Jackson on American Idol! http://eonli.ne/18J0v62

  • Larc

When Keith or anybody else apparently follows a scripted critique that clearly defies the evidence, I don’t feel that person’s opinion is worthy of respect. That’s especially true when his opinion suddenly “turns on a dime” from the prior line he expressed.

  • Wfish88

Think Kree has the edge. Don’t under estimate the country vote. I have a feeling Angie’s votes would most likly go to Kree… I think Kree has to do really bad in order for her to loose.

  • http://twitter.com/tinawinabina Tinawina

I wouldn’t be surprised if that happened. I made the mistake of clicking on one of those American Idol Facebook posts, and I was shocked at the number of posts calling Candice the teachers pet who didn’t deserve to be in the final and that the producers rigged it for her since the beginning… stuff along those lines. LOL. I was like… uh… didn’t they BOTH get thrown under the bus a few weeks ago? Have we been watching the same show? Wan’t there a huge outrage over it? But it didn’t mater, the mythology had taken hold for some folks. Candice was the enemy, Kree was the saint, she deserved to win because Candice was only there because of “producer manipulation”. She wasn’t good at all, she was “just like Fantasia (!!!!)” SMH.

I love them both, but sometime AI viewers can get a bit nutty. I think some viewers are invested in sticking it to the man and will sort of impose that narrative on each year’s proceedings.Whoever is doing well and maybe gets the pimp spot towards the end gets it I guess? Yikes.

  • http://twitter.com/LindsayKempFan Not fit to print

I think Ellen was supposed to catch a ball there and didn’t. Maybe because she knows what it’s like to be in Keith’s position.

  • http://twitter.com/LindsayKempFan Not fit to print

If they are going down to three judges, all of them have to bring it. He’s not a bringer. he’s a go-alonger.

  • H.A.

It wouldn’t be Idol without the faux outrages. I tend to find these things the fans own form of manipulations. No different than the producers.

  • http://twitter.com/LindsayKempFan Not fit to print

Of course Kree fans are agitated. I want Candice to win and I’d be thoroughly p*ssed right now if he had said Kree. At the same time, I worry that giving Candice the edge will make her fans complacent.
The judges don’t need to give that question a straight answer. In fact, you’d think that FOX would prefer an answer that made it seem a little more of a cliffhanger.

  • http://twitter.com/voco_qara voco qara

I have a hard time believing Keith has an agenda against Kree. They have a lot of mutual friends in Nashville. Sarah Buxton, a friend of Kree’s who came last week on the show to support Kree, has been friends with Keith for years. They’ve performed together and he covered one of her songs”stupid boy” on his album and it ended up becoming one of his biggest hits.

He is also good friends with Little Big Town who are also good friends with Kree. Personally I think he secretly wants Kree to win but doesnt want to appear to biased. That’s just the feeling I get.

  • Larc

Maybe Keith meant he would be replacing Randy by being the next one out the door.

  • Larc

Keith may want Kree to win, but I suspect he was following orders from Nigel when he criticized her without any apparent cause. If he did that, it would make me think less of him. He should critique honestly no matter what Nigel says. What could Idol do, sue him? The media would have a heyday with that.

  • Liteasy

I think Candice’s performance was flat and pitchy – not perfect in any way like they wanted the audience to think.

  • http://MJO judes

Ellen was spot on when she said Keith has a genuine love of a variety of music. [ Unlike Mariah who hasn't known several songs on the show] He is a pure musician . As a fellow Aussie i can tell he was taking the micky out of himself[ in other words -his comments were tongue in cheek] .

  • HKfan

I disagree, I would much rather listen to Kree’s singing than Candices. Don’t think I would buy her music, just not that into country, but for tone/listening pleasure, then Kree.,

  • BonnieDee

Sorry but flat and pitchy = Kree. Throw in boring. Candice is an amazing singer.

  • Last Laugh Lane

I think he deserves a 2nd season, maybe the chemistry with Nicki and Mariah didnt mix or something. The only time when I really was annoyed
at him was his bussing of Janelle top 5 week and pimping of Amber top 4.1 week which played right into the producer’s hands. However this is drastically better than the scorecard for the season 10/11 judges. He had a lot of good to say most of the time.

  • http://twitter.com/desireechick Kesia Monteith

You shouldn’t take a look at Idolforums. They are brutal on Candice. They think she’s unpleasant, not nice…there’s someone who thought based off of the song title of her coronation song, that Candice stole the song from Janelle. Then another poster backs that up by saying Janelle is all beautiful, while Candice is without a bf. I’m like, where are they getting this stuff from? Wow….just people making stuff up. Oh well.

  • perfectstorm

The fact that Keith Urban was on the judges bandwagon with enabling Lazaro, tells me he does not deserve a second season.

  • dabney c

“handing Candice the win” by telling 3 of 4 judges to exclude her from their top 3, eh? Please explain to me why they’d want Candice to win if they made it clear all season that she’s not nearly as marketable as some of the others?

  • dabney c

Exactly. They worked hard to get Candice and Kree out of the way, but the voters weren’t having any of it. Now they’re stuck with a finale sans Angie and Amber. Why people think Idol has always *wanted* Candice to win is beyond me … especially considering they rejected her twice in previous seasons. I think they’re just resigned at this point that the likes of Candice and Kree have resonated with their audience.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100000325443396 Shannon Smith McNeely

Please reassure me y’all that Randy Jackson will not be moving to X Factor as a surprise new judge?!

  • http://twitter.com/tinawinabina Tinawina

Oh my. I stay away from that place for a reason. Heh.

  • http://twitter.com/HighTensions Jake W.

    I hope not!

  • songsungblue

I’m pretty sure Kree has never been flat or pitchy. Neither has Candice. For once, they’re pretty evenly matched, IMO.

  • Da 1 N Only

That’s not a legitimate cause to not keep him around, every Idol judge ever has enabled contestants who had no business reaching the final 10/12 for story/fodder reasons.

  • Da 1 N Only

The disease is Mariah, Nikki is the symptom that manifests as a scar/boil that everybody notices, Keith is the limb that may have to be amputated to save the patient, & Randy is Randy.

  • http://www.facebook.com/frederickruppcristiano Frederick Rupp Cristiano

LMAO. Another crazy Candice fan. Kree has amazing range and she doesnt have to yell every performance like Candace does.

  • http://www.facebook.com/frederickruppcristiano Frederick Rupp Cristiano

I don’t get why people find him likeable, he’s very annoying to me. I cant stand any of the judges this year. Can’t wait to hear Keith is replaced.

  • Tips_y

Forgive my ignorance, but I didn’t know that Fantasia Barrino and Jordin Sparks were not black female winners of AI that we still need to slay this lack of a black female AI winner??!!

  • Tips_y

Maybe he is afraid Kree will potentially outshine him in country if she wins and therefore don’t want her as potential competitor.

  • http://twitter.com/KariannHart Kariann Hart

The thing that bugs me is when people bring in their bias against a black contestant. And how can anyone think that Candice can’t sing?

  • http://twitter.com/KariannHart Kariann Hart

This could have been a terrific season if only the Judges had gotten along.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100003738370002 Erose Lavana

I hope Keith isn’t joking, too. Would love to see him back next season.
I was very ready to be disappointed with him for showing favoritism to Kree
in the early shows but when he finally called her out for being bland and lacking emotion I really applauded him for taking the risk of
backlash that I was certain would come from country fans.
IMO, an effective judge looks for an artist and critiques music regardless of genre. For me, Keith showed this season that he is really looking for an artist, not just a country artist, and can judge all kinds of talent.

  • http://www.facebook.com/lauren.dennis.75 Lauren Dennis

The “disease” was the only one that consistently supported Candice and Kree

  • http://www.facebook.com/lauren.dennis.75 Lauren Dennis

Selective memory at it’s finest. Mariah started singing Billie Holiday’s classic Good Morning Heartache, and he exclaimed he never heard it. Same thing when Breanna sang Jazmine Sullivan.

  • mmb

No doubt Keith was joking. How could he be ” replacing” randy? If Keith replaces randy who replaces Keith lololol. I’ve no problem w Keith coming back. But I don’t think he was making any official announcement He was just goofing in his low key way

  • http://www.facebook.com/lauren.dennis.75 Lauren Dennis

Has anyone noticed that Mariah is the only one that has never done any promotion or conference calls for the show? I think the TPTB are scared of what she’d say. She’s definitely shown she’s not afraid to work an agenda that differs from theirs. I think her Post Idol interviews will be pretty juicy

  • 1rollbounce2

Yes, they are in fact black! My post must be unclear…it’s the dry spell I’m referring to! you know – how there’s all this talk of WGWG for last 6 seasons…the black male has been dry since Ruben and the white female since ummmm Carrie? black male is a distant memory.

eta: must be a bad post i have or 8 people don’t like black male singers either. which explains why they don’t win?? LOL

  • DragonFly

“And the pimping has already started. Ugh!! Can’t the judges just stay neutral…..”

Saying someone may have the edge doesn’t mean it’s fact- Keith (& other judges in the past) may just be going by some rumor/(opinions) he’s heard. For yrs, on talk shows, Idol judge appearances has them being asked the big “Who do you think will win question?” You tend to very much want them not to comment….. UNLESS they agree w/your pick. If they say your choice—they are the BEST judge ever. If not….a bad judge, get rid of them.

“It wouldn’t be Idol without the faux outrages. I tend to find this to be the fans own form of manipulations. No different than the producers.”

Also really dislike the fan “destroying others” game to sway people to see things their way. The big diff tho is that fans can only “try” to make it happen vs…..

  • meloday

I don’t think he’s teasing..and..*unpopular opinion alert*..I think he and Nicki have great chemistry together and I’d loove to see them both come back!

  • meloday

I enjoyed Kree very much in the beginning but to my ear Kree seems to “yell” more now, almost like the purity of her voice has been overworked or she’s tired because she’s missed a few moments I feel she could have nailed earlier in the season. To me she’s coasting, rarely feeling the meaning of what she sings.
Candace’s voice never has sounded like a “yell” to my ears, just extremely powerful and strong but I notice her voice seems a bit strained lately, too. Now Angie…except for two songs, seemed to yell all the time including her original song. But that’s music perception and personal taste, I suppose. Some voices and sounds please us more than others. I’d love for Candace to win, my musical taste is in her wheelhouse and I’d buy and listen to her music whereas with Kree, I’ll probably never hear anything she records unless she makes it to CMA.

  • http://twitter.com/THEROCPRINCE Cory Patrick

Keith is boring in my opinion. No thanks.

  • Da 1 N Only

Mariah would consistently support me, you, Lazaro, & William Hung if the producers don’t force her to do her job. That just makes her a J Lo with less personality. She is a disease because she is the root cause of the dysfunction on the judges panel. Nikki by responding immaturely to it & lashing out is the symptom that is visible to everybody. Keith is the limb that may need to be amputated because he may end up being let go over this mess.

  • julesb2183

He wasn’t kidding. He would have said as much. He has been in the business long enough to know you don’t make that kind of statement with out being crystal clear that he was kidding.

  • julesb2183

wouldn’t put it past simon LOL

  • http://www.facebook.com/lauren.dennis.75 Lauren Dennis

Oh yeah, Mariah made Nicki go apeshit. Nicki as a grown adult is not at fault at all. Nicki does nothing wrong ever. And, she does not display a hair trigger temper see (Steven Tyler), (Lil Kim), ( Hot 97), and (The Breakfast Club)

  • Tips_y

The same dry spell could be said of white female winners… or gay winners, black or white or whatever.
