Katharine McPhee’s Marriage Over? Caught Kissing Smash Director (PHOTOS)

Katharine McPhee Kisses Mystery Man Who Isn't Her Husband

So. I guess Katharine McPhee’s marriage to Nick Cokas is over. TMZ published photos of the American Idol alum kissing Smash director, Michael Morris. She’s still technically married, and Morris is too–to actress Mary McCormack

Mary tweeted about her husband on October 6, as someone pointed out in comments:

OOP. To add insult to injury, Mary’s new series, Welcome to the Family, was cancelled by NBC on Friday. Poor thing.

Katharine McPhee is dating her former “Smash” director Michael Morris, TMZ has learned … and they’re even making out in public — problem is, THEY’RE BOTH MARRIED TO OTHER PEOPLE.

Morris is married to actress Mary McCormack (who played Howard Stern’s wife in “Private Parts”) … and they have 3 young daughters together, ages 2, 6 and 9.

29-year-old Katharine is married to 47-year-old producer Nick Cokas — they have no children.

Sources close to Katharine and Nick tell TMZ … the two have been separated for 6 months and are living apart. They were married in 2008.

It’s unclear where Michael’s relationship with Mary stands — but it seems it’s also on the ropes, because over the weekend he was sucking face with Katharine in broad daylight in L.A. like he didn’t care who saw.

The two weren’t shy with the PDA either — holding hands and cuddling each other in Hollywood.

So far, no official comment from any of the parties involved.

Well, Katharine definitely has a type. The dude looks like a double for her husband. Maybe she got confused and thinks Mike is her husband. Maybe TMZ is confused.

Seriously, look at the two pictures in this article (Kat with Nick and Mike with his wife)

  • Damien Roberts

My best guess is that if they were out in public then its probably over. I don’t think anyone in HOllywood is stupid enough to flaunt an affair.

  • Eileen99

Well then, lol. I guess they aren’t too worried about being seen in public.

  • jpfan2

I’ve been seeing blind items about Kat for awhile now having affairs but I didn’t believe them. I guess they were true!

  • Sassycatz

LOL! You’re right. They look like they could be brothers…. and I really think we should pass the hat around to buy Katharine a new pair of jeans.

(Seriously, though, feel sorry for his very young children.)

  • Landon Cox

    Get that d girl!

  • Landon Cox

    Kristen Stewart?

  • waitingforthe1

she didn’t flaunt an affair since she wasn’t the one who was married. Also they weren’t out in “public” per se.

  • bridgette12

I guessing that Kat’s husband is no longer her manager and she’s moved on to someone new who can help her career. I never seen someone who’s really not that talented, get so many opportunities. I guess I understand why she’s getting them now. Obviously respecting her own or anyone else’s wedding vows mean nothing to her.

  • jpfan2

It would be a little weird to have her husband still manage her at this point! I guess he’s unemployed now.

Her parents are well established in the biz so that has probably helped her alot. Her Mom and sister both work for Idol.

  • Niall

Why do I have a feeling both marriages are over BECAUSE these two got together? I’m sure we’ll hear they got together only after they were both separated, and obviously that’s possible, but it seems more likely that at minimum the emotional cheating started during SMASH. Kids change the metrics for me in these scenarios, so i feel they should be more low key and wait to go public until he and his wife filed for divorce.

  • Mateja Praznik

Obviously both marriages weren’t in good shape, otherwise these two wouldn’t get together. It is what it is. It would be better to file for divorce first, tho.

  • Sassycatz

I wonder how long they’ve been working “full time” for Idol and if that had anything to do with really good people like Debra Byrd leaving, i.e., was Byrd forced out to accommodate these other hires.

  • curlyenta

She finds yet another way to get back in the tabloids. Cheat on her hubby and steal another womans man. Guess choices are limited with limited talent. Hmm. Wonder if she ever took acting lessons? She needs them – real bad.

  • Montavilla

Hmm. In absence of any clues, I just assumed Byrd left because she was having some kind of conflict with Jimmy and his crew of producers.

  • bridgette12

Acting is an art, taking acting lessons can only go so far. You need actual talent to be a good actress. People like Kat and Carrie don’t fall into that category. They need to leave the acting alone and simply sing.

  • Garrett Clayman

Whoa this is exactly like Smash!

  • Niall

Interesting. As recently as Oct. 6th, Mary McCormack tweeted about her husband, imploring people to watch an episode of the tv show Betrayal, directed by “my talented husband.” Then on Oct. 3rd she tweeted a friend something about getting together and “Michael just got home.” That makes this look really shady on Kat and Michael’s side. Mary and Mike weren’t even separated. Really shady.

  • curlyenta

    Ha so true!

  • MichaelG (MikhailXO)

With Kat and hubby….it always seemed to be an odd pairing–a weird marriage. Not surprised. Now, perhaps, we know how she got the lead in Smash. It’s all beginning to make sense….

  • Eilonwy_has_an_emu

It would be a little weird to have her husband still manage her at this point!

It would be one hell of a good TV series plot, especially with the added twist that McPhee’s two swains look so remarkably alike. When the McPhee character gets the two men mixed up — and she will — is it because she’s that stupid, or is she cleverly manipulating them for her own ends?

Reality is probably boring compared to what a good scriptwriter could do with this. Bring on the goat sacrifices!

(ETA: If I were writing it as a TV series, the Mary McCormack character would probably end up as the hero. She might have to kill zombies or something.)

  • Larc

A lot of the Hollywood types seem to take their marriage vows even less seriously than politicians take campaign promises.

  • Sassycatz

Damn. We need a good tell all book.

  • standtotheright

I’m pretty sure Steven Spielberg would not allow his name to be bandied about as her personal casting champion just because an itinerant director took a fancy to her.

The casting couch meme doesn’t even make much sense, since on TV, the writers have all the power and bring directors in for individual episodes, and for this series, the showrunner was a woman. Morris didn’t even shoot for Smash until the 4th episode. He directed 7 out of 32.

  • standtotheright

Okay, now *that* suggests McCormack is being treated pretty shabbily. I hope she is okay.

  • http://mjsbigblog.staging.wpengine.com/ mjsbigblog

Poor Mary McCormack. Her series “Welcome to the Family” was cancelled on Friday. It sucks to be her.

  • http://mjsbigblog.staging.wpengine.com/ mjsbigblog

    Reminder:

The topic is Katharine McPhee. Please don’t use this thread to drag other celebs/Idols.

  • BluSky

similar story — Brangelina had been insisting for years that their affair hasn’t started on the set of Mr. and Mrs Smith when both were still married:))

  • carola99

Man this is really disappointing coming from Kat.
I can understand that her marriage wasn´t working, it happens, no big deal.
But to go ahead and cheat with the show´s director while he is still married and the wife doesn´t have a clue about the affair up till two weeks ago is low..
Poor kids. 3 little girls! Sads..

  • fuzzywuzzy

I think very differently. If Morris and Mary are still together, then I think very poorly of Michael Morris in this situation, as he is totally in control of his behavior. However, since the public doesn’t know anything about Morris or Kat’s personal situation, then who knows what is really going on?

  • fuzzywuzzy

I think much more poorly about Michael Morris in this situation than I do Kat.

  • fuzzywuzzy

Sorry, but I place far more responsibility for this on Michael Morris than Kat.

  • curlyenta

Why? She’s as much a home-wrecker as he is…. more so in fact, in that she’s knows, I assume, he has 3 little kids at home, and still chooses to carry on with that creep. She’s the worst!

  • standtotheright

So she’s aware that he has three little kids at home and yet he has somehow forgotten his own offspring? Fascinating.

  • fuzzywuzzy

Exactly. And if it’s true that Michael and Mary are not separated, then I think that he’s far more culpable and irresponsible than Kat for this affair.

  • fuzzywuzzy

If by “home-wrecker” you are implying that Michael and Mary were happy until “evil Kat” stole him away from her, then that’s a very antiquated, sexist and misogynistic point of view, IMO. It’s actually even worse if Michael and Mary were happy and Michael decided to have an affair with Kat. He’s the main one responsible for “wrecking” his home, if that’s what happened. Don’t get me wrong, Kat isn’t deserving of any respect either here, but to place the bulk of the blame on her just isn’t realistic.

  • curlyenta

Yep, he’s a jerkoff I’ll agree, but a woman who sleeps with another woman’s husband – Kat – is the worst kind of low-class ho there is in my book.

  • CSFan

I think poorly of BOTH of them. Morris for carrying on an affair, one that seems to have blindsided his wife, based on what she had been tweeting, and McPhee for being the type of person to get involved with a married man with young children. Both Morris and McPhee are in control of their actions and equally responsible.

  • CSFan

If he wasn’t separated from his wife, Katharine surely knew that and to me that makes both of them equally repugnant.

  • CSFan

She’s the bigger name so she’s going to draw the most ire from the public. Fair or not, that’s how it’s going to be. She put herself in this situation so she’s going to have to live with it.

  • standtotheright

Not necessarily. He could have been giving her the “paperwork is in the mail” line. Accepting that might make her exceedingly naive or outright stupid, but not necessarily callous or malicious. (I’m leaving her own husband out of it since they’ve been living apart for months.)

  • CSFan

Except one look at his actress wife’s twitter account would have proven that a lie. It’s clear they were living together as recently as two weeks ago. The “he lied to me” thing isn’t going to fly in this case.

  • fuzzywuzzy

But that is assuming that Kat thought that he was still with Mary, and at this point, we don’t know that to be true. As STTR wrote, Michael may have misrepresented the current status of his relationship with Mary.

  • fuzzywuzzy

Sorry, but if he wasn’t separated from his wife, I place more of the responsibility for the affair on him.

  • curlyenta

Nope sorry…. he might be a pig, but knowingly sleeping with another woman’s man makes her sleezy …. at least someone with no morals or self control, and therefore deserves all the crap that might/will come her way because of it. Imagine what his wife must be thinking today!?

  • fuzzywuzzy

It depends on how Michael represented (or misrepresented) the status of his marriage to Kat. Regardless, if Kat was formally separated and Michael was not, then I still place more responsibility for the affair on him, especially when he has young children to consider. I am not absolving Kat of her part in this affair, but I certainly don’t put more “blame” on her.

  • standtotheright

“That’s just Hollywood PR to avoid the gossip until this all comes out, babe! She’s a good girl and trying to make this easy on the kids.”
I’m not saying that she in fact didn’t know, or even that she shouldn’t have suspected, just that we don’t know how successful a BSer this guy is and how willing she was to believe said BS if it was proffered.

At any rate, the father is responsible for the welfare of his kids, and no matter what she knew, he’s the one that abdicated that first.

  • Eilonwy_has_an_emu

Him: “Oh, the wife’s just clinging and in denial. She’s so needy! I told her I wouldn’t be home for X, but she keeps thinking she can emotionally blackmail me into staying with her.”

That’s practically a standard script, and the other partner has every reason to work hard at believing it.

(It also comes after “She hasn’t been emotionally there for me in months, our marriage is an empty shell, we’re staying together now only for the kids, but I’m sure I could be a great daddy with shared custody — I’m away from home so much now for work, it won’t be any different. I’m only still living with her so she can’t use the kids against me.”)

  • fuzzywuzzy

Sure, if Michael didn’t misrepresent his familial situation to Kat, then she’s not winning any prizes for morals either. Sorry, Michael still bears more responsibility here.

  • jpfan2

It is pretty ironic that the betrayed wife tweeted about her husband directing…Betrayal. Hopefully he told his wife that he was having an affair because to let the tabloids do it with pics is pretty low. Hope she takes him to the cleaners in the divorce!

  • fuzzywuzzy

Yep. There’s a reason why those lines still work. ;)

  • BobbiNJ

I do too. Seems like 50/50 responsibility to me. Only Kat could have prevented herself from being involved in this mess, but she didn’t turn him down, obviously. That makes her equally responsible for the damage done to his marriage. Just as he would be equally responsible for the damage done to hers if they had not split before this started. Either way, it is sleazy.

  • taylor

Why is it always the woman’s fault. What about the loser husband? He’s the one lying and cheating on his wife. For all we know, he could be playing both of them. It wouldn’t be the first time.

  • Guest

Maybe he isn’t such a great guy. It could be a blessing in disguise for her, j/s. ;)

  • ptebwwong

I agree that acting lessons can only take you so far. But it doesn’t mean you can’t work to get better. I have seen some early work from numerous actors who have improved over the years. Now I’m not saying you will go from a terrible actor to winning multiple Oscars like Daniel Day Lewis. But there can be improvement.

  • usedtobelucy

Three young children involved. Parent of three young children apparently not separated from other parent of same. Both members of this couple: giant jerks.

  • taylor

Michael wrecked his own home. He’s the one who chose to cheat on his wife. He’s the one who has a responsibility to his children.

  • pj

Sad for the spouses and especially the kids. . I guess Kat wants the guy with the most clout.

  • Kenna899

At least she’s famous enough to actually get into the tabloids….

  • curlyenta

It could actually be the highlight of her career.

  • jpfan2

They’re both creeps. A married man with three little kids who sleeps around. And a married woman who cheats with him.

  • Incipit

Both Giant Jerks. OK, that works. I am unable to see where there are individual degrees of Jerkdom here – or how it is relevant to the central fact.

I am so neutral on McPhee’s vocals or acting. Never been all that impressed with either – but this isn’t about those – I now observe that she is one half of a set of Giant Jerks, because they made that callously and publicly accessible with their PDA’s. Both of them are involved on purpose – they can take joint responsibility for the broken vows and collateral damages….AKA families. The adults will find their own ways to deal with private business made public.

My sympathies are with the kids.

    IMO.

  • Pippygirl

Yes it is very hard to decide which one of these two is more disgusting.

  • Aavari

Gosh, and here I thought sleeping with a different PERSON other than the one you are married to was the lowest of the low. Why different standards for men and women?

  • Mel432

I seriously doubt Katharine is having this fling for publicity. And I doubt she “cheated” on her husband because Michael had more clout. She stayed with Nick for a really long time, and I’m sure she met many men during that time who had more clout than him. I don’t approve of this “affair”, but many people do fall in love when they work together. Fortunately, most of them started out single.

  • breakdown

Who’s most at blame? Really? They both are equally at blame. Mary is a very talented actress and will bounce back career wise. The personal will probably be more difficult.

  • Liteasy

I haven’t seen Katharine with Nick for several years. He used to be in every photo with her helping with her luggage and dogs. Nick never did anything for her career, although she really doesn’t have the talent to have a great career – it’s who you know or who you’re related to with her.

  • Liteasy

These photos of them are in public view, and I’m sure they’ve been cheating on their spouses secretly for some time before it came out in the open. Maybe that’s why Kat and Nick are separated — that it actually started when they were still living together.

  • Liteasy

Kat’s dad worked for Fox the year she was on Idol, so most likely that helped her mother get the Idol job.

  • Mel432

Katharine is stunningly beautiful and has a beautiful voice. Actor she may not be, but she can sing.

  • Beaugard Stevens

well she is not hiding it. I sort of admired the way she kept on dating and then married the man she was seeing during Idol even though he was much older, I felt it must be true love. I’m sorry to hear about this.

  • bridgette12

She’s better at stealing other women’s husbands, then singing or acting.

  • MyDailyComment

Yes, but even when they wanted to make changes to the show, Kat’s part never decreased even though most viewers complained about her.

It helps to be sleeping with a director…

  • http://kristentheyellowlab.blogspot.com/ ZsusK

Eh. That’s the oldest excuse in the book. “Our marriage was already over before I met him/her.” Even the strongest marriages go through tough times. In a perfect world, married couples put effort into working through those tough times rather than leaping into a love affair, and, thus, putting the final nail in the coffin.

I’m disappointed in Kat because she is doing a thing that I really despise – flaunting an affair with a married man who happens to have two small children. So classless.

But, before I get accused of putting all the blame on her, I’m not. He’s still married to his children’s mother, so he’s the worst kind of man to be out smooching his girlfriend in public.

Also, warning to Kat: He’s a cheater, so keep your eyes and open, dear.

  • Disraeli99

Tsk, tsk. Another Idol alum being outed as a homewrecking ho – Fantasia Barrino has some company in the homewrecking hussy dept now, lol… shame the vitriol directed at Fantasia isn’t as strong, yet, for KatPee. Sleeping with married men or women is never cool or justified – unless you’re married to ‘em.
    #selfrespect

  • standtotheright

Because the producers liked her and assumed the complaints about her character were mostly about the writing. Which was not unreasonable. They gave her some pretty ridiculous dialogue in the first season.

I just think it’s preposterous to assume that she got any special treatment because of a journeyman director that shot the show for a handful of episodes.

  • iluvai

awww. It is hard when a marriage ends. Good luck Kat, my favorite idol ever! I got married at 20 and it lasted until I was 29. We had no children. I met my second husband when I was at a different place and we’ve been married for 17 years. Both are great guys. Sometimes people are brought into one’s life for different reasons.

  • waitingforthe1

Kat “not that talented”? that’s funny.
And since no one on the internet knows what’s really happening it’d probably be better to not judge based on pictures posted on a gossip blog.

  • waitingforthe1

Limited talent? Kat was the best singer on her season of Idol and she’s had the most main stream success outside of Daughtry.

  • waitingforthe1

It’s not the other woman’s job to keep the man at home curly. It’s HIS responsibility to stay true to his wife and children. According to the reports Kat and Nick have been living apart for over 6 months.

  • waitingforthe1

I’m sure your opinion of Kat isn’t colored in any way by the fact that she’s overshadowed Taylor Hicks *snark*

  • jpfan2

Fantasia had an affair and got pregnant by a married man, people called her every name in the book! And I think her dude was even separated from his wife for awhile at least.

I don’t remember tons of folks saying it was the guy’s fault.

  • Tinawina

Yeah, that dude Fantasia messed with was 10 months into his mandatory 12 month separation period before he could get a divorce, and was living apart from his wife when they met. She actually has more of a leg to stand on than Kat in this situation, not that I’m saying I approve of either (actually, since I don’t know either personally I’m in MYOB mode). But Fanny got seriously dragged. I suspect Kat will too when the details fully come out. Funny how the women usually get it harder than the men, even when he’s the one who’s the married parent of young kids.

  • zebracrunk

They’re both at fault because they both cheated on their spouses. Hopefully Nick and Mary get some fruitful divorce settlements, even though Kat will probably be made into the victim.

  • zebracrunk

I guess you’re getting downvoted because they were on Idol and apparently should be immune to criticism. I agree with you, cheating is never okay.

  • fuzzywuzzy

I think that it was wishful thinking that Kat’s acting was so bad because of the script. Kat is a beautiful woman and good singer, but if Smash is any indication, she has very little potential as an actress, at least at this point.

  • pj

If you’re talking about music, I’d say cheating is far less worse than other behavior and I would buy something from her if it was actually good. However, I have not been impressed. And no, cheating is not okay. Somehow, it is now acceptable. Sigh.

  • standtotheright

Oh, she’s never going to be a master thespian, but I do feel that the way the part was written didn’t allow her to show *any* potential. The whole show suffered from the issues in the writing room.

  • bridgette12

You don’t need a great script to show potential. If you got talent, people will see it. She don’t have any, she’s dead on screen.

  • zebracrunk

I’m not going to act like I’d boycott somebody’s music or refuse to buy it because they cheated on their partner, that’s a little extreme. There’s always some kind of excuse for cheating, whether it’s cheating themselves or helping someone else cheat (home wrecking) Seems like just because fans like their career work (acting/music), it gives them a pass.

  • fuzzywuzzy

Yes, having to work with a lame script is a real handicap, but even then, if someone has acting potential, usually one can see glimpses of that, regardless of how bad the script. Over the course of 2 seasons, I have to say that I never saw anything from Kat that would suggest to me that she had any real acting potential. She was just bad, IMO.

  • standtotheright

I disagree. She’s serviceable. Maybe not any more than that, but I had much bigger issues with other parts of the show than with her performance.

  • bridgette12

I got a pair of shoes that’s serviceable, but they are also boring. If your on a show with several people and you can’t make an impact and stand out as long as that show was on, it has nothing to do with anything or anyone else but her. You can’t give people acting, they either have it or they don’t.

  • bridgette12

She was totally out of her league, in other words a dead fish on screen.

  • Kariann Hart

Kat is a beautiful woman and has a really nice voice. She needs to take acting lessons if that’s part of her career goals.
