This is a bit of old news that I originally posted in the headlines thread a few days ago, but I thought you guys might enjoy watching the video. Following on the heels of Katharine McPhee’s “cover” of the 80′s cult hit “I Know What Boys Like”, here she is performing her cut on the latest Barbie-themed record, Barbie and the Diamond Castle. Here’s Katharine intercut with Barbie characters doing Barbie-like things, singing a typically generic bit of pop fluff you’d expect from something like this. I suppose the kids will like it.

Katharine mentioned in her recent appearance on Live with Regis and Kelly that she’ll be in the studio recording this fall, with plans to release a record in Spring 2009. Any speculation of what could possibly be on that record? She’s done the rhythm/pop thing, inexplicable 50′s covers, the bad 80′s covers thing, music for airports, and now kiddie pop, what could be next?

Watch the Video after the JUMP…

Hmm, maybe she’ll go for the folksy 60′s vibe. It’s popular at the moment. But then Kat would have to “act” like she’s a songwriter and acoustic guitarist.

She could borrow Kristy’s horse and go country. Frankly, if she would have felt as comfortable in her skin as say Brooke, she would be lovely sitting at a piano singing from her heart. Thing is, I have never gotten that she actually connects with a song just because she loves it but I haven’t kept up with her to know other than idol.

At least she is keeping herself busy and I think this Barbie thing is good for her and the kids because she does seem to have a fun sweetness about her at times that I think she can connect to the young girls with.

    Here’s what I think:

In the competitive music/film/fame industry, I would imagine that Katherine would be jumping on every opportunity thrown at her: even if that includes airline music videos & barbie songs(?). Plus for a 23 year old girl, thats a lot of money. She’s not super famous, but I think she is trying to get there.

Having said that, I still think Kat has an amazing voice (when she sings a song that can showcase that) and I think she will continue to do these small projects and have small movie roles and i think there is a small possibility that she will have a big opportunity in the future…or at least i hope so.

but i prob wont be putting this song on my ipod.

A JAL commercial song, multiple covers for a movie soundtrack and now an English language cover of a song from the manufactured Mexican pop group RBD! (who did a heavily accented English version too.) created for a Barbie CD & DVD. And some people had the audacity to question if she would have a career in music. :lol_ee:

Seriously, Katharine is smart to take opportunity when it comes a knocking and would be a fool to pass on them, even Barbie songs. She said on Regis & Kelly yesterday that she is going to spend a month filming The Storyteller in Philadelphia this fall so always something on the burner with this girl.

I think the music is catchy and sounds like it could be heard on pop radio if not remix it and release it to the gay clubs. The lyrics are kind of cheesy, but for a Barbie movie that not a huge surprise. I do think that Katharine sounds really good singing this and has shown more power then I thought she had.

As for trying different styles I’m fine with that. I don’t think someone has to stick to a particular sound in music otherwise they can get sterotyped.

I think she’s done some smart things so far with her career. She’s getting work in smaller things to keep her name out in public. In a couple of years she’ll have a larger resume that she’s not going to be known first for Idol. Usually in Hollywood they want to test you out in smaller roles till you build a brand with the public. If she is professional to work with which I assume she is she’ll get even more work.

i think she’s doing a pretty good job of staying out there and getting noticed with the acting/singing thing. she hasn’t had an album out in a while, and she’s not even on her label anymore, but we still hear from her a lot. that’s more than most idol finalists can say.

as far as the barbie song goes, even though she’s practically married to her dad, she’s still young and can still be a good role model for young girls.

and from what i could tell, i at least heard no mention of magic rainbows…. haha

Not my kids. I’d no sooner buy Barbie music than I would one of those Kidz Bop atrocities. This is the way we teach are children to have really bad taste in music. It’s sacrilege.

“This is the way we teach are children to have really bad taste in music. Ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s sacrilege.”

I don’t think it’s worse then any Idol coronation song out there. Also as someone whose parents didn’t teach me anything about music I grew to love showtunes, opera, jazz, folk, pop, country, rock, etc. I go from Eydie Gorme, Linda Eder, Nellie McKay, Patty Griffin to Stephen Sondheim and even Harry Chapin.

The one thing that I’ve learned though is that taste in music is all subjective anyway.

hey this was on RBD’s English CD! Still not liking Kat’s uber commercial pop style, but at least you can understand her as opposed to the RBD version….although I kind of think theirs is a bit more fun…what can I say, I loved their soap opera….

The thing about Katharine is that she still hasn’t developed an artistic identity. Even young David Archuleta, when you listen to his interviews, seems to have a clear artistic path layed out in his mind–pop music for now–more mature stuff later when he’s ready for it.

With Katharine, it’s a little of this, a little of that, as if she’s looking for something that will stick. She’s got no connection to the music at all. She’s a dilettante. To me, it’s not very interesting. But then, I’ve always suspected she really wants to be an actress, happy to have music as a sideline.

I think so too. I still remember that LKL interview with her and Taylor right after Taylor won. Her eyes lit up when she was asked about the fact that Steven Spielberg had said something to her about a movie. I definitely think acting is her passion.

I do think Katharine has a lovely voice, and she’s stunningly beautiful. But this Barbie song sounds so overprocessed, I would never know whose voice it is. You could tell me it was Ashley Simpson, Miley Cyrus, Mariah Carey or Milli Vanilli, for that matter, and I’d probably believe you, just because there is nothing there I would recognize in that song.

With Katharine in general, I kind of get the feeling that she has always done what people told her she was good at, instead of what she feels in her heart she loves to do. That’s a tough one to figure out when you’re in your 20s, so maybe she will find a more recognizable path that speaks to her heart later. Right now, I’m not sure the scattershot approach is working for her.

  • dante

I think Kat just wants to be famous and will do anything to achieve it. She is by far my least favorite of any idol. Without her stunning looks – she would be a nobody IMO. Her voice is generic, she can’t dance at all, and she has no musical identity. She doesn’t strike me as being very intelligent or as being a hard worker. Her looks and sexy poses have gotten her jobs but I just don’t see her being around for the long term. I am sure she is making good money though. I just don’t care for anything about her.

    Katharine? Connected? Not really. lol

She is as gorgeous as ever, though. ;)

  • shelter

    I agree 100% with dante’s comment.
She doesn’t connect with the music and her goal seems to be fame. I’m not sure about her acting skills, but I don’t see Katharine having career in music. Cause touring would be too much work.

Eh. This song was done better by Sara Paxton. Two years ago. Y’know, when ‘Aquamarine’ came out.

My daughter and her friends love this movie and sing the song all of the time.
