Idol has done all of that before for prior seasons. They do tend to jump into overdrive with praise if it’s believed the prior season was weak. It’s not unique to season 10.

  • Indigobunting

Since the season started it feels like there is a resistance to admitting this group is popular. Ratings, tour sales, coronation singles, and EP’s all point to this season having rebounded from season 9. They are a popular group and at minimum one in particular looks positioned to open well this fall.

I don’t think that’s it, I think most people would agree wholeheartedly that Idol has rebounded from S9. But I think some people are still rubbed the wrong way by the season-long and continuing media spin of best season ever, best contestants ever, best judging ever here JLo have some more $$$$$ and now the no doubt brewing most successfully sold out tour ever.

ITA. That is my point! Of course this season is popular, no doubt. I have never followed tours before S7 and just never noticed the spin until this year. It is pretty obvious they reduced some venue sizes; whether to be realistic after s9 or to spin is a matter of opinion I guess. I go to a lot of concerts and shows, and have never had the venue itself email “great seats still available” to a sold out concert. Maybe I’ve just been unlucky having to always go to a scalper. Just paid double for Jon Steward tickets for November when they sold out in 2 days! Could have waited but hubbies Bday gift you know. ;)

It will be interesting to compare total revenue. And also to see how next year fares. I’ve known about 3 people who went this year and they weren’t happy with the format; wonder if they will change it back for next year?

That doesn’t change the fact that it can be off putting to some.

Was it offputting to you every other season it was done, which is every idol season ever? Or just this season, and if so why is it now offputting?

Maybe I’ve just been unlucky having to always go to a scalper.

Why did you go to a scalper when the concert you saw for S8 didn’t even sell out?

  • soverymel

Was it offputting to you every other season it was done, which is every idol season ever?

This is the first time I’ve noticed it, I really didn’t watch any more than casually on and off before Season 7. With the writers strike taking away all my other shows, I got sucked into it.

So while I trust people who’ve been around longer than I have that it’s happened before, and I can totally see the reasoning why Idol does it especially after a weak season, knowing that doesn’t make it any less off putting.

S10 is having a good tour and good reviews. I just don’t see them being more talented than S7 or S8 contestants, and I don’t see their tour being anymore successful.

Having said all of that, I have to add that I really feel bad for S9.

    gangreen29 says:
Why did you go to a scalper when the concert you saw for S8 didn’t even sell out?

Not trying to answer for anybody, but sometimes there are no good seats left even when a concert isn’t sold out. Some people had rather pay a scalper to sit in row 5 than the regular ticket price to sit way up in the nosebleeds.

  • Elliegrll

I have only followed AI since S7 as well, but I don’t recall anyone saying S8 was more successful, or for that matter, the contestants were more talented than S7.

I have noticed people lumping the season 7 and 8 tours in with season 5′s, and calling them the most successful ever. I think that’s funny, since the amount of tickets that were made available and venue sizes were reduced during those two seasons, too, so why lump them in with the most profitable tour in AI history.

  • suenigma

The Season 7 & 8 tours may not have been as profitable as Season 5 ( although factoring in the downturn in the economy, blah, blah, blah) but those three are still the most successful tours in AI history, are they not? So I’m guess I’m not sure what issue you have with people lumping them in together as the most successful tours? They are.

  • HR

No, I don’t believe I’m going to accept the success of the season 5 tour being downgraded by economics. It was the most popular season and all indicators support that.

The point is that an argument is being advanced that the season 10 tour isn’t successful and a byproduct of rigging the seats available to spin that it is. If season 10 is going to be held to that standard then it applies to other tours. I think all those tours named have been successful but if we’re holding season 10 to that high standard of matching seats exactly then seasons 7 and 8 must be too.

I need to go back and read as I didn’t pick up on that at all. I thought the discussion was that S10 wasn’t any more successful than S8 or S7. Not that it isn’t successful. I think S10 is doing well. It sounds like a fun tour, it’s getting some good reviews, and its got a nice variety of talented contestants.

I think that is why it is successful in the same way S5, S7, and S8 were. There are many popular contestants with a variety of styles. S5 probably had the greatest number of popular contestants which would account for the number of tickets sold.

I do think you do need to factor in the economy a little when looking at ticket sales. People do not have the same amount of disposable income as they used to. I wouldn’t expect S10 to sell like S5. I do think S9 was hit hardest by the economic downturn. Touring in general was down that year. That, and the fact that it was not a popular season made for a dismal tour.

What is interesting is how this correlates with debut week album sales. S5 big tour, big numbers for Tyler and Daughty. S7, good tour, big debut numbers for Cook and Archie. S8 good tour, good debut week for Adam. S9, dismal tour, not so hot numbers for Lee and Crystal. I think S10 debut week numbers for Scotty should be over 150,000 based on S10′s AI tour success.
