Thousands audition for ‘American Idol’ at the Meadowlands

Some walked away in tears. One woman collapsed and was carted away on a stretcher. And the lucky few got one step closer to Hollywood!

More than 15,000 American Idol wannabes auditioned for the hit show’s producers Tuesday at the Izod

Long lines, wristbands, waiting around and singing with strangers was the scene at the Meadowlands Sports Complex with tons of Idol wannabes trying their hand at wowing the judges.

American Idol: A First Hand Account of the Jersey Auditions

Yesterday, MTV Newsà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Idolà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ expert Jim Cantiello announced his intention to audition for the showà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s eighth season. Now heà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s blogging the big day, starting with his arrival at Jerseyà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s Izod Center.

8:50 a.m.: Welcome to my à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Idolà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ audition blog. I just took my seat in the Izod Center. Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ve been up since 3 a.m. Thereà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s a dude teaching all bajillion of us auditioners how to sing à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Hit Me With Your Best Shotà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ in unison. He said it was the best ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s ever sounded in à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Idolà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ audition history. Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢m so pumped, even though I think he was lying!!!

But fans shouldnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t expect to see those songs that led him to the finish line on the new album.

Archuleta filming at Wynn’s Pond

Filmmakers were set up once again at picturesque Wynn’s Pond in Coweta County Tuesday shooting scenes for an upcoming release: the first music video from “American Idol” season seven runner-up David Archuleta.

On site all day for the shoot were Blackdog Films production crew members, the young video cast — some plucked from talent and modeling agencies in neighboring counties — excited mothers and, of course, Archuleta himself.

The group was also excited about a crew coming from “Entertainment Tonight” to tape a segment Tuesday for the entertainment news show.

‘Idol’ fans flock to N.J. auditions

Do you have what it takes to be the next American Idol?

That is the question on tons of people’s minds this week at the Izod Center in East Rutherford, N.J. Yes, New Jersey, not New York like the network wants everyone to believe. When the show premieres in January and the auditions are shown, everyone will be screaming New York, not New Jersey. But they were at the Meadowlands.

Thousands of ‘Idol’ Hopefuls Gather in New Jersey

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ About 10,000 people gathered in New Jersey on Tuesday in search of one dream … to be the next American Idol.

A sea of people lined up all the way around the Izod Center in East Rutherford à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ the last stop on the “Idol” audition train for his year. Many slept on the pavement overnight to secure a place near the front of the line. Other hardcore “Idol” wannabes had camped out since Sunday.

“Idol” host Ryan Seacrest showed up Tuesday to interact with the hopefuls. People who’d been waiting in line for hours brightened up when they saw the man known for the line, “THIS is ‘American Idol.’”

A JERSEY MOB OF ‘IDOLS’

Forget about going to Hollywood – these “American Idol” rejects didn’t even make it past the New Jersey Turnpike.

“You think you have what it takes – and then you get here,” said Matthew Stoghill, 23, of Columbus, Ga., one of about 15,000 “Idol” wannabes who strode into the Izod Center at the Meadowlands Tuesday.

“They were nice about it, at least. They said, ‘You are not what we are looking for,’ but it was hard to hear,” he said. “Maybe I shouldn’t have told them I’m getting an MBA.”

Leftovers from Monday’s Concert

Hereà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s the Dirty Bird Falcons dance David Cook and Michael Johns attempted in Atlanta Monday night. (Earlier in the song, I couldnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t tell if Carlyà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s mike went out or she forgot the words. Can anyone tell?) They do the Mavid dance at the 2:00 point. Although Michael told me he didnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t think David got it quite right, it looked fairly coordinated to me.

There is normally a backstage meet and greet with all 10 à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Idolà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ contestants but Michael Johns had a special one just for him and 100 of his closest friends and fans. He even had free beer for everyone and encouraged them to hang out instead of just coming and going. He hugged old friends from his CJà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s Landing days in Buckhead and even a gal from his Tifton college tennis days.

Broadway Revival of Godspell Postponed

The Broadway revival of Stephen Schwartz and John-Michael Tebelak’s Godspell, which was scheduled to co-star “American Idol” finalist Diana DeGarmo and Tony nominee Gavin Creel, has been postponed.

Producer Adam Epstein said in an Aug. 19 statement, “I am devastated that, due to the loss of a major investor in the harsh reality of a slowing economy, there were no other options at this time than to postpone. I could not in good conscience move forward without full confidence that the capitalization was in place and that all of those employed by the production could be responsibly taken care of. . . Even in light of the situation, my passion for this vibrant production is unwavering and it is my goal to regroup as soon as possible.”

Nope. When I saw it yesterday, I got really excited at first. How evil for them to trick us like that. :laugh_tb:

EEE!!! Just bought my ticket. First time I’ll get to see an Idol show from the front row. Good thing too ’cause I was about getting ready to “cut” Ticketbastard. =P I’ll be on the “interpretive dance” side of the stage so I’ll try getting some video for y’all. My camera doesn’t handle loud sounds well, though, so I’m warning you in advance that said video will probably suck.

  • spritely

The metromix thing is snarky, but it hints at something I’ve been wondering about, which is–will there come a year when Idol alums are so omnipresent in the entertainment world that the preception of the show will make a quantum shift and it really will be perceived as a legit and powerhouse “boot camp” for performers.
Looking at the music charts, for instance, and esp. the various Top 10s, Idols are all over them. Right now, we have seen Jordan, Chris, and David C taking three of certain Top 10 slots. If Crush climbs fast enough and TOML hangs on long enough, there might be a day when Idols claim 4 out of 10 spots. And now Idols also scattered among films, Broadway shows, tv shows, etc. etc.
If this omnipresence happens, there will–naturally–be a handful of superstars, a bunch of mid-range “stars,” and a plethora of lesser lights. It’s an interesting “progression,” to use another word favored by a certain recent winner.

Eta: And this isn’t even taking into consideration the Idols from other countries.

  • tinawina

    PROMISES, SCHMROMISES…

So, I promised that I wouldn’t really try to process all of this madness until I got an extended break, but something happened today that really made me reflect. Well, I may be getting too generic. A lot of small things have happened lately that correlated into some fresh perspective. Let me explainà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦

We had a much-needed, much-deserved day off in Ft. Lauderdale, FL, today. I took it as an opportunity to rest myself not only physically, but mentally. The strain of trying to put everything I have into this tour, on top of the scheduling conflicts that inevitably arise from doing a record while on the road, and not to mention the crazy press commitments, have left me, and all the idols, with an almost humorous non-distinct stare as we enter the home stretch of this tour. So, today I did little but stay in bed and walk around. I went with MJ and Chik to go see “Tropic Thunder”. I give it 4/5 stars. Tom Cruise was the only part I didn’t like about it. Don’t know whyà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦

After the movie, we went and grabbed dinner, and then split up upon returning to the hotel. I went out to the beach, and plopped down on a chair to watch the waves and the lightning in the distance. (Hurricane/Tropical Storm/Massive Nuisance Fay) All at once, it hit me full on what has happened to me this last year. I thought about Omaha, and my brother, Andrew, and the Green Mile, and the top 12 red carpet event, and the hotel, and the finale, and this tour. It really became apparent to me at that moment that the tour will be done in about a month, and we’ll all, hopefully, go on to amazing careers and lives away from this “Idol Machine” and apart from one another. After a year with these guys, that thought looms ominous and scary.

I bring all this up to make this point: There were times from the beginning of college to the time that I made the show where I truly was unsure of what I was supposed to be doing. I’ve been a professional musician of some degree since I was 15, but could I ever really “make it”? This last year has allotted me a new inner peace, and I’m more thankful for that than anything else. It’s nice to have the title of American Idol, and the privilege of making a major-label record, but more than all of those things, I want to say thank you for the support you guys have shown, but more importantly the understanding you guys have shown to my limitations as I try to meander through this very new lifestyle of actually being acknowledged for doing something I love. I’m giving everything I can to make sure that you guys feel as appreciated as you’ve made me feel over the last year. Here’s to many more.

    ~D

Ok so im watching Shear Genius with my mom (yeah, i know…laugh it up…i deserve it) but anyways, does anyone remember the Mayner/Miner twins (i dunno how to spell it but it is pronounced Miner…like the job) from season 2 New York auditions (they sang Fallen by Alicia Keys…they were wo girls….randy loved them)? Well, I do. And I recognized them. They were getting their hair cut by the people on the show. They described themselves as “pop singers”.

Anyways, i know no one cares. But i LOVE it when i see AI people outside the show.
    Ok- I’m done.

How ironic that Chris Sligh’s blog was posted today. I had an opportunity to share space with Mr. Sligh at lunch today.

Hey Chris, in case you’re reading, nice of you to let me stare at you during lunch today at David Mcguinnes ( the Irish Pub). I seriously didn’t think it was you, but that hair sooooo gives you away. BTW….you sure do look skinnier in person!!!

On a side note, I was kind and left him in peace, but as Sarah told me later, I should have told him I’m a “FoMJ” Friend of Mj’s or that MJ is My Boo!!!

    LOL!!!

I have a question and since this is the random place and people here seem very knowledgeable: I will ask.
In light of Archie’s chart debut, will Cookie’s Skechers deal still be a go? I want to see those pics!

In light of Archieà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s chart debut, will Cookieà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s Skechers deal still be a go? I want to see those pics!

    I don’t get the question.
What does one thing have to do with the other? How is Archie’s success with Crush (congrats, BTW) of any relevance to Cook’s endorsement deal?

Does one David’s success translate in any way to the other’s failure? WHY? Should we scrap DC’s career right now before he even has a first single out? Is any success he might have null and void if Archie is also successful? I DON’T GET IT.

    Sorry, I’m trying to understand… I can’t. :(

Sherry what does one have to do with the other?

I am always excited to see an Idol from one season work with an Idol from another, especially touring together. I love seeing these people succeed!

Ok, I admit I also want to see Jason tour with Brooke!

    Good for David Cook!

I thought that since the media and Billboard, sadly, are using Archie’s debut as a way to write DC off, 19 might want to do the same and focus solely on Archie. I am glad that doesn’t seem to be the case. Perhaps I have just gotten too attached. Seeing Fred Bronson compare Cookie to Ruben Studdard doesn’t sit too well with me. I hope that Cookie still has a chance with his music, that is all.
